Abstract
Description
[Background technology]
[0001] Described herein is a water-dispersible granule (WG) composition comprising bixlozone. Also described herein is a method for preparing the composition. Also described herein is a method for controlling undesirable vegetation using the composition.
[0002] Liquid suspension concentrate (SC) compositions tend to experience settling of dispersed solids during storage due to gravity. They require mixing and / or shaking before use to resuspend the settled material. In addition, SC compositions tend to leave approximately 3-5% residue when poured from the container. SC compositions also present safety and cleanup issues due to their liquid form.
[0003] Granular compositions, such as water-dispersible granule (WG) compositions (formulations consisting of granules that are applied after disintegration and dispersion in water), do not share the problems of SC compositions with regard to settling, residue, safety, or cleanup. Thus, they offer many advantages over SC compositions.
[0004] An effective WG composition depends on the identity and amount of the active ingredient and other ingredients. However, an effective WG composition is often difficult to predict and formulate. For example, conventional WG compositions containing high amounts of bixlozone have not been formulated.
[0005] Surprisingly, WG compositions containing high amounts of bixlozone have been discovered herein that overcome past limitations associated with SC compositions and WG compositions containing low amounts of bixlozone. Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] In one embodiment, the present disclosure is directed to a water-dispersible granular composition comprising: (i) greater than 50% to about 90% by weight of bixlozone; (ii) about 0.01% to about 5% by weight of a wetting agent; (iii) about 1% to about 20% by weight of a dispersing agent; and (iv) about 1% to about 20% by weight of a carrier.
[0007] In another embodiment, the present disclosure is directed to a method of preparing a water-dispersible granular composition, the method comprising: I) forming a mixture comprising: (i) bixlozone; (ii) a wetting agent; (iii) a dispersing agent; and (iv) a carrier; and II) granulating the mixture.
[0008] In yet another embodiment, the present disclosure is directed to a method for controlling undesirable vegetation, the method comprising: I) forming a mixture by dissolving a water-dispersible granular composition in water, the water-dispersible granular composition comprising: (i) greater than 50% to about 90% by weight of bixlozone; (ii) from about 0.01% to about 5% by weight of a wetting agent; (iii) from about 1% to about 20% by weight of a dispersant; and (iv) from about 1% to about 20% by weight of a carrier; and II) applying the mixture to the undesirable vegetation or locus thereof, or to the soil or water, to prevent the emergence or growth of the undesirable vegetation. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0009] This specification uses examples to illustrate the disclosure, including the best mode, and to enable those skilled in the art to practice the disclosure, including making and using any compositions or systems and performing any incorporated methods. The patentable scope of the disclosure is defined by the claims, and may include other examples that occur to those skilled in the art. Such other examples are intended to be within the scope of the claims if they have elements that do not differ from the literal language of the claims, or if they contain equivalent elements that do not differ in material way from the literal language of the claims.
[0010] As used herein, the terms "comprises," "comprising," "includes," "including," "has," "having," "contains," "containing," "characterized by," or any variation thereof, are intended to include a non-exclusive inclusion, subject to any limitations specified. For example, a composition, mixture, process, or method that includes a list of elements is not necessarily limited to only those elements and may include other elements not expressly listed or inherent to such composition, mixture, process, or method.
[0011] The transitional phrase "consisting of" excludes any unspecified element, step, or ingredient. In the case of a claim, such would close the claim to the inclusion of materials other than those recited, apart from impurities normally associated therewith. When the phrase "consisting of" appears within a clause in the body of a claim rather than immediately following a preamble, it limits only the elements set forth in that clause; other elements are not excluded from the claim as a whole.
[0012] The transitional phrase "consisting essentially of" is used to define a composition or method that includes materials, steps, features, components, or elements in addition to those literally disclosed, provided that these additional materials, steps, features, components, or elements materially affect the basic and novel characteristics of the claimed invention. The term "consisting essentially of" occupies a middle ground between "comprising" and "consisting of."
[0013] It should be readily understood that where the invention or any portion thereof is defined in open-ended terms such as "comprising," the statement should also be construed as describing such inventions using the terms "consisting essentially of" or "consisting of" (unless otherwise stated).
[0014] Furthermore, unless expressly stated to the contrary, "or" refers to an inclusive "or" and not an exclusive "or." For example, a condition A or B is satisfied by any one of the following: A is true (or exists) and B is false (or does not exist), A is false (or does not exist) and B is true (or exists), and both A and B are true (or exist).
[0015] Furthermore, the indefinite articles "a" and "an" preceding an element or component of the invention are intended to be open-ended regarding the number of instances (i.e., occurrences) of that element or component. Thus, "a" or "an" should be read to include one or at least one, and singular forms of elements or components also include the plural, unless the number is clearly intended to be singular.
[0016] As used herein, depending on the context in which it is used, the term "about" provides an estimate of a value relevant to the claimed invention, which estimate is reasonable as such information would be understood or interpreted by one of ordinary skill in the art given what is known in the context of the present description and from publicly available information. Generally, the term "about" as used herein means that the estimate falls within ±10% of the relevant value. Bixlozone is a herbicide recently introduced by FMC under the CAS name 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone. For convenience, Bixlozone is commercially available (as a formulated material) as "Overwatch" and is also referred to as "DCPMI," "F9600," "2,4-DC," and "dichloroclomazone." As used herein, the term "Bixlozone" refers to a composition comprising at least 90% by weight of pure 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolinone. In one embodiment, the bixlozone can be technical grade bixlozone having a purity range of 90-95% by weight. In another embodiment, the bixlozone can be a composition comprising greater than 95% by weight pure 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolinone. The term "pure bixlozone" refers to 100% pure 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolinone.
[0017] As used herein, "wt %" refers to the weight percent of the recited component relative to the total weight of the recited composition.

Accordingly, the following examples are to be construed as merely illustrative and not limiting of the disclosure in any way. [Example]
[0210] Example 1. Preparation method of the present invention. The preparation method of the present invention according to the present disclosure is carried out as follows: By this method, the water-dispersible granule composition of Table 1 is produced.
[0211] First, all components of the composition are mixed and air-milled to produce a mixture with a median particle size of 5-8 micrometers. Next, water is added to the mixture over approximately 1 minute. The wet mixture is stirred for an additional 3 minutes. The wet mixture is then fed into a paste extruder equipped with a 1 mm dome. Finally, the wet extrudate is dried in a fluidized bed with an inlet temperature of 60-65°C for approximately 10-12 minutes to produce the water-dispersible granules shown in Table 1, which have a moisture content of approximately <1.5%.
[0212] Example 2. Composition of the present invention. This example includes several commercially available materials. These materials are available from several different suppliers. For example, Bixrozone is available from FMC; benzenesulfonic acid, dodecyl-branched, sodium salt is available from Solvay; copolymer of maleic anhydride and diisobutylene, sodium salt, and 5-10% sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is available from Solvay; sulfonated aromatic condensate, sodium salt is available from Nouryon; sodium tallow fatty acid is available from BASF; amorphous silica is available from PPG; and kaolin clay is available from Imerys. The exemplary trade names listed in Table 1 are for reference only and are not intended to be limiting.
[0213] An inventive composition according to the present disclosure is shown in Table 1. The composition did not settle during storage and therefore did not require mixing or shaking to resuspend any settled material prior to use. The composition also did not leave a residue when poured from the container.
