Abstract

Mechanochemical catalytic depolymerization This disclosure relates to a method for depolymerizing plastic materials using specific grinding media, a grinding media, and a method for manufacturing the grinding media. The grinding media is catalytically functionalized. The grinding balls (1) can be used to depolymerize polymers (2), such as polyolefins. The zirconia grinding balls are sulfated (3) to enhance the functionality of the solid acid catalyst. The vigorous motion during grinding (4) and the catalytic functionality synergistically contribute to depolymerization.
