Vehicle wireless router system and method

Abstract

The vehicle communication system includes a first housing configured to be mounted within a vehicle and a second housing configured to be mounted outside the vehicle. A router is coupled to a first electronic module and an antenna selection module. The router, the first electronic module, and the antenna selection module are disposed within the first housing. A first Wi-Fi antenna is disposed within the first housing and coupled to the antenna selection module. A second Wi-Fi antenna is disposed within the second housing and coupled to the antenna selection module. A modem is disposed within either the first housing or the second housing and coupled to the router. The antenna selection module includes a switch operable by a user of the communication system to select between a plurality of Wi-Fi coverage states, including an in-vehicle coverage state, an out-of-vehicle coverage state, and an in-vehicle and out-of-vehicle coverage state.
