Abstract
Apparatus and methods are described for excavating earthen materials using millimeter wave (MMW) radiation, or a combination of MMW radiation and mechanical devices. MMW radiation can reduce the costs and hazards associated with excavating using mechanical means alone or explosives. MMW-based excavation offers significant energy efficiency advantages compared to optical or long-wavelength microwave excavation techniques.
