Pre-lithium-treated electrode material and cell using the electrode material

Abstract

The present invention provides chemically or electrochemically pre-lithified cathodes for use in electrochemical cells, electrochemical cells, and methods for producing cathodes. [Solution] A composition, system, and method for manufacturing and using a pre-lithiumized cathode are provided for use in a lithium-ion secondary battery as a means of supplying additional lithium to a cell. The chemically or electrochemically pre-lithiumized cathode comprises a cathode active material that is pre-lithiumized before being assembled into an electrochemical cell. A method for manufacturing a pre-lithiumized cathode comprises bringing the cathode active material into contact with an electrolyte that is further in contact with a counter electrode lithium source, and applying a potential or current to the cathode active material and the lithium source, thereby pre-lithiumizing the cathode active material with lithium.
