AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing thermoplastic articles often have sharp edges that can damage or tear sealing films during packaging processes like overwrapping, vacuum sealing, and modified atmosphere packaging, limiting their suitability for multiple sealing techniques.

Method used

A method to form a smooth edge on thermoplastic articles by creating a deflectable flange that is biased inward, using heat to soften and maintain the deflection, effectively hiding the peripheral edge from contact with sealing films.

Benefits of technology

The method results in articles with smooth edges that reduce film damage during sealing processes, making them suitable for various packaging techniques without compromising sealing integrity.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for forming a molded thermoplastic article having a smooth periphery. [Solution] Many thermoplastic articles have sharp edges formed when the article is molded or cut from a raw material sheet. Such sharp edges can damage thin plastic films or skin they come into contact with, and it is desirable to smooth the edges. Described herein is a method for forming a smooth periphery for such sharp-edged articles by rotating the sharp edges. The smoothing operation is performed by forming a deflectable flange with a spacer that includes a bent region separated from the potentially sharp peripheral edge, deflecting a portion of the deflectable flange, and softening at least one bent portion of the deflectable flange to result in a smooth periphery upon cooling. A liner sheet may be attached to the raw material sheet before, during, or after formation and may be peelable therefrom.
