[0008] An embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the attached drawings. Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view showing the structure of a vibration generator 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The vibration generator 1 is a device configured to generate a reaction force in three dimensions using the so-called gyroscopic effect, that is, to generate vibrations. This vibration generator 1 includes a housing 2. In this example, the housing 2 has a roughly rectangular parallelepiped shape. The housing 2 includes a housing body 21 and a cover 22. The housing 2, that is, the housing body 21 and the cover 22, is formed of, for example, a resin material.
[0009] In this vibration generator 1, an axis x is defined. In Figure 1, axis x penetrates the housing 2. In the following description, the direction along axis x is defined as the "axial direction." In this axial direction, one side is defined as the upper side, and the opposite side of the other side is defined as the lower side. These expressions of "up" and "down" do not necessarily correspond to up and down in the direction of gravity, but rather correspond to up and down in the vibration generator 1 itself. Furthermore, the direction around axis x is defined as the circumferential direction, and the direction perpendicular to axis x is defined as the radial direction. Note that axis x is defined by the rotation center of the rotating body rotated by the drive device described later.
[0010] The housing body 21 has, for example, a rectangular bottom wall 23 in a plan view in the axial direction, and four side walls 24 rising from the four straight edges of the bottom wall 23. The cover 22 closes the opening formed by the upper ends of the four side walls 24. The cover 22 is fixed to the housing body 21 by, for example, adhesive or screws. In this way, the storage space inside the housing 2 is sealed. Note that the housing 2 may have various external shapes other than a rectangular parallelepiped. For example, the housing 2 may have the shape of a game controller that can be held in one hand or both hands.
[0011] Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view showing the structure of a vibration generator 1 according to one embodiment of the present invention. Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view along line 3-3 in Figure 2. Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view showing the structure of the vibration generator 1. Figure 5 is a schematic perspective view showing the structure of the vibration generator 1. Note that the cover 22 is not shown in Figures 2 and 4. Also, the housing 2 is not shown in Figure 5. Referring to Figures 2 to 5 together, the vibration generator 1 includes a vibrator 3 housed in a housing space within the housing 2. The vibrator 3 has a rotating body 31, a drive device 32, and a base 33. The rotating body 31 is, for example, a weight. The rotating body 31 is integrally formed from a metallic material. The metallic material includes, for example, lead.
[0012] The drive unit 32 is a motor that rotates the rotating body 31 around axis x. The drive unit 32 is, for example, an outer rotor type motor. The rotating body 31 is held by a rotor 34 that constitutes the drive unit 32. The rotor 34 can rotate relative to the stator 35 of the drive unit 32 around axis x. The rotor 34 has a generally cylindrical outer shape centered on axis x. In this example, the rotating body 31 is formed in a cylindrical shape centered on axis x. The dimension (diameter) of the rotor 34 of the drive unit 32 in the radial direction perpendicular to axis x is set to be smaller than the dimension (diameter) of the rotating body 31 in the radial direction. Note that the shape of the rotating body 31 may be other than cylindrical. Also, the drive unit 32 may be an inner rotor type motor.
[0013] The base 33 is formed, for example, in the shape of a disc centered on axis x. The base 33 is integrally formed from, for example, a resin material or a metal material. In this example, the radial dimension (diameter) of the base 33 is set to be approximately the same as the radial dimension (diameter) of the rotating body 31. The stator 35 of the drive device 32 is fixed to the upper surface 33a of the base 33. Fixing members such as adhesive or screws (neither of which are shown) may be used for fixing. In this example, the upper surface 33a extends along a plane perpendicular to axis x. On the other hand, the lower surface 33b of the base 33 is formed by a convex spherical surface that curves downward in the axial direction. The shape of the base 33 may be a polygonal shape instead of a disc shape, as long as a curved lower surface 33b is formed.
[0014] The housing 2 has a base 25 formed on the upper surface 23a of the bottom wall 23. In this example, the base 25 is integrally formed with the upper surface 23a of the bottom wall 23. The base 25 is a protrusion that projects upward from the upper surface 23a at a predetermined height. In this example, the base 25 is formed in a cylindrical shape as shown in Figure 4. The radial dimension (diameter) of the base 25 is set to be smaller than the radial dimension (diameter) of the base 33. The base 25 supports the base 33, i.e., the vibrator 3, with its upper surface 25a, which is the surface on the axial side of the vibrator 3, i.e., the base 33. The lower surface 33b is the surface on the base 25 side in the axial direction. Note that the base 25 may be formed in other shapes such as a polygonal prism instead of a cylindrical shape.
[0015] The upper surface 25a of the base 25 is formed by a concave spherical surface that curves downward in the axial direction, corresponding to the lower surface 33b of the stand 33. The radius of curvature of this spherical upper surface 25a is set to be the same as the radius of curvature of the lower surface 33b of the stand 33, which is also spherical. In this way, the upper surface 25a of the base 25 is supported by the lower surface 33b of the stand 33. The upper surface 25a of the base 25 is the surface on the oscillator 3, i.e., the stand 33 side, in the axial direction. As will be described later, the stand 33, i.e., the oscillator 3, can change its orientation between a reference orientation in which the axis x is perpendicular to the surface of the cover 22 and an inclined orientation in which the axis x intersects the surface of the cover 22 at an inclination, by the lower surface 33b of the stand 33 sliding along the upper surface 25a of the base 25.
[0016] Figure 6 is a plan view schematically showing the structure of the vibration generator 1. It should be noted that illustration of the cover 22 is omitted in Figure 6. With combined reference to Figures 2 to 6, in this example, the vibrator 3 and the housing 2 are connected by four first displacement mechanism 4A, second displacement mechanism 4B, third displacement mechanism 4C, and fourth displacement mechanism 4D. The first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D are respectively arranged at the four corners of the housing main body 21. That is, the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D are arranged at intervals of, for example, 90 degrees in the circumferential direction. The third displacement mechanism 4C is disposed on the opposite side of the first displacement mechanism 4A across the vibrator 3. Similarly, the fourth displacement mechanism 4D is disposed on the opposite side of the second displacement mechanism 4B across the vibrator 3.
[0017] Each of the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D includes a magnetic body 41 and a coil 42 that face each other in the radial direction, and an elastic body 43. In this example, the elastic body 43 is, for example, a coil spring. The coil spring is, for example, a cylindrical coil spring extending spirally in the radial direction. However, other elastic materials such as rubber may be used for the elastic body 43 instead of the coil spring. The inner end of the elastic body 43 in the radial direction is attached to a fixing member 44 fixed to the base 33 of the vibrator 3. The fixing member 44 is fixed to a cylinder 33c that rises upward from the upper surface 33a of the base 33. The cylinder 33c is formed integrally with the base 33. In this example, the fixing member 44 is, for example, a screw. A female thread is cut on the inner peripheral surface of the cylinder 33c, and the fixing member 44 is screwed into the cylinder 33c.
[0018] On the one hand, the outer end of the elastic body 43 in the radial direction is attached to fixing members 45 fixed at the four corners of the housing main body 21 of the housing 2. The fixing member 45 is fixed to a cylinder 26 that rises upward from the upper surface 23a of the bottom wall 23 of the housing main body 21. The cylinder 26 is formed integrally with the bottom wall 23. In this example, the fixing member 45 is, for example, a screw. An internal thread is cut on the inner peripheral surface of the cylinder 26, and the fixing member 45 is screwed into the cylinder 26. In this way, the base 33, that is, the vibrator 3, is held in four radial directions by the four elastic bodies 43 of each of the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D. When the vibrator 3 is in the state of establishing the reference posture, the four elastic bodies 43 maintain an extended state. That is, in the reference posture of the vibrator 3, the four elastic bodies 43 uniformly hold the vibrator 3 from four directions. By the holding of these four elastic bodies 43, the vibrator 3 is constantly pressed toward the base 25.
[0019] As particularly shown in FIG. 3, the elastic body 43 is arranged in a state of being inclined downward from the inner peripheral side toward the outer peripheral side. In the axial direction, the inner end of the elastic body 43 is arranged above the outer end of the elastic body 43. In this way, the central axis of the elastic body 43, that is, the coil spring, is inclined downward from the inner peripheral side toward the outer peripheral side in the radial direction. In order to arrange the elastic body 43 in this manner, in one example, when the vibrator 3 is in the state of establishing the reference posture, the position of the upper end of the cylinder 33c of the base 33 is arranged above the position of the upper end of the cylinder 26 of the housing main body 21 in the axial direction. In this example, the inner end of the elastic body 43 is arranged between the upper end of the cylinder 33c and the screw head of the fixing member 44. On the other hand, the outer end of the elastic body 43 is arranged between the upper end of the cylinder 26 and the screw head of the fixing member 45.
[0020] Figure 7 is a partially enlarged perspective view schematically showing the structure of a displacement mechanism 4 according to one specific example. Here, the first displacement mechanism 4A will be used as an example for explanation. Note that the housing 2 is not shown in Figure 7. Referring in particular to Figures 3 and 7 together, in each of the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D, the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 are both formed in a cylindrical shape. Both the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 are fixed to the elastic body 43. Specifically, the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 are fixed to the winding of the elastic body 43, for example, while being housed within the winding of the coil spring, which is the elastic body 43. For example, adhesive may be used for fixing. The magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 are separated radially by a predetermined magnetic gap. In this way, the magnetic body 41 is connected to the coil 42 via the elastic body 43.
[0021] In this example, the magnetic body 41 is positioned adjacent to the inner end of the elastic body 43, while the coil 42 is positioned adjacent to the outer end of the elastic body 43. The magnetic body 41 is, for example, a cylindrical iron plate. However, other magnetic materials besides an iron plate may be used for the magnetic body 41. In one example, the coil 42 has, for example, a cylindrical iron core 42a and a conductor 42b spirally wound around the outer surface of the iron core 42a. When current is supplied to the conductor 42b of the coil 42 in a predetermined direction from, for example, a power source (not shown), an attractive force is generated that pulls the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 radially towards each other based on the magnetic interaction between the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42. In this way, the coil 42 forms an electromagnet. Since the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 are fixed to the elastic body 43, when current is supplied to the conductor 42b, the elastic body 43 contracts from its reference position. On the other hand, when the supply of current to the conductor 42b is stopped, the elastic body 43 returns to its extended state.
[0022] As described above, when the oscillator 3 establishes a reference position on the base 25 of the housing 2, the axis x is perpendicular to the surface of the cover 22. At this time, the elastic body 43 is held in a radially extended reference position in the four first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D. Thus, the oscillator 3 is held by the elastic body 43 in each of the four directions. At this time, for example, when current is supplied to at least one of the coils 42 of the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D, the elastic body 43 contracts radially due to the attractive force generated between the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42. This contraction of the elastic body 43 causes the oscillator 3 to slide along the upper surface 25a of the base 25. As a result, the oscillator 3 can change its position to an inclined position in which the axis x intersects the surface of the cover 22 at an inclination.
[0023] Next, the usage of the vibration generator 1 will be described below. Figure 8 is a plan view illustrating the usage of the vibration generator 1. Figure 9 is a cross-sectional view along line 9-9 in Figure 8. Note that the cover 22 is not shown in Figures 7 and 8. When the drive unit 32 is energized, the drive unit 32 rotates the rotating body 31 in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction around the axis x. Since the vibrator 3 is connected to the elastic body 43 in four directions, a reference position of the vibrator 3 is established even when the rotating body 31 is rotating. At this time, for example, if current is supplied in the first direction only to the coil 42 of the first displacement mechanism 4A, an attractive force is generated between the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42. In the first displacement mechanism 4A, the elastic body 43 contracts from an extended state in the radial direction. As a result, the base 33 is pulled towards the first displacement mechanism 4A in the radial direction. The lower surface 33b of the base 33 slides along the upper surface 25a of the base 25.
[0024] Specifically, as shown in Figure 9 in particular, as the elastic body 43 of the first displacement mechanism 4A contracts radially, the side of the base 33 connected to the elastic body 43 of the first displacement mechanism 4A is pulled towards the outer circumference in the radial direction (displaced) and lifted away from the upper surface 23a of the bottom wall 23 in the axial direction (displaced). At the same time, the side of the base 33 connected to the elastic body 43 of the third displacement mechanism 4C, which is on the opposite side of the oscillator 3 from the first displacement mechanism 4A, is pulled towards the inner circumference in the radial direction (displaced) and pulled down towards the upper surface 23a of the bottom wall 23 in the axial direction (displaced). In this way, the elastic body 43 of the third displacement mechanism 4C extends further radially. Also, the elastic bodies 43 of the second displacement mechanism 4B and the fourth displacement mechanism 4D are pulled towards the first displacement mechanism 4A. In this way, the oscillator 3 establishes an inclined posture in which its axis x intersects the surface of the cover 22 at an inclination.
[0025] When moving from a standard position to an inclined position, a moment is applied to the vibrator 3, which includes a rotating body 31 rotating around axis x, in the direction of movement around an axis perpendicular to axis x, while passing through the center point (not shown) of the curved surface of the lower surface 33b of the base 33. As a result, due to the gyroscopic effect, a reaction moment, or reaction force, is generated in the vibrator 3 in a direction different from axis x and the axis perpendicular to axis x. This reaction force causes the vibration generator 1 to generate the reaction force generated by the vibrator 3, that is, to generate vibration. The vibration is transmitted, for example, from the vibrator 3 to the base 25, or housing 2. Thus, the vibration is transmitted, for example, to a hand holding the housing 2.
[0026] In the above example, current was supplied only to the coil 42 of the first displacement mechanism 4A, but instead, for example, current may be supplied only to the coils 42 of the second to fourth displacement mechanisms 4B to 4D. In this way, the oscillator 3 can be attracted toward the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D to which current is supplied. As a result, the oscillator 3 can be attracted in four directions in the radial direction. Furthermore, by supplying current only to the coils 42 of two displacement mechanisms 4 that are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction among the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D, the oscillator 3 can be attracted in four more directions in the radial direction at an intermediate position in the circumferential direction between the two displacement mechanisms 4. After the tilted position is established, when the supply of current to the coils 42 is stopped, the elastic body 43 returns to its extended state. As a result, the oscillator 3 returns from the tilted position to the reference position.
[0027] For example, as shown in Figure 10, by supplying current to the third displacement mechanism 4C and the fourth displacement mechanism 4D, the oscillator 3 can be displaced outward in the direction of arrow A at an intermediate position between the third displacement mechanism 4C and the fourth displacement mechanism 4D in the circumferential direction. The same applies when current is supplied to the first displacement mechanism 4A and the second displacement mechanism 4B, when current is supplied to the second displacement mechanism 4B and the third displacement mechanism 4C, and when current is supplied to the fourth displacement mechanism 4D and the first displacement mechanism 4A. In this way, in addition to pulling the oscillator 3 radially outward at the aforementioned positions of the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D in the circumferential direction, the oscillator 3 can be pulled radially outward at four additional positions. As a result, the oscillator 3 can be displaced in a total of eight directions.
[0028] Furthermore, by creating a difference in the current values supplied to the coils 42 of two displacement mechanisms 4 that are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction among the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D, the oscillator 3 can be pulled radially outward at a position circumferentially biased towards either of the two displacement mechanisms 4, starting from the intermediate position between the two displacement mechanisms 4. For example, by setting the current value of the coil 42 of the second displacement mechanism 4B to be greater than the current value of the coil 42 of the third displacement mechanism 4C, the oscillator 3 can be pulled outward at a position circumferentially biased towards the second displacement mechanism 4B, starting from the intermediate position between the second and third displacement mechanisms 4B and 4C (for example, the position shown by arrow B in Figure 10).
[0029] The same applies when there is a difference in the current supplied between the first displacement mechanism 4A and the second displacement mechanism 4B, when there is a difference in the current supplied between the third displacement mechanism 4C and the fourth displacement mechanism 4D, and when there is a difference in the current supplied between the fourth displacement mechanism 4D and the first displacement mechanism 4A. In this way, by adjusting the ratio of the magnitude of the current supplied between the displacement mechanisms 4 that are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction, the angle at which the oscillator 3 is attracted between the displacement mechanisms 4 that are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction can be adjusted. In this way, the oscillator 3 can be displaced outward over a 360-degree range around the axis x.
[0030] In the vibration generator 1 described above, while the drive unit 32 rotates the rotating body 31 around the axis x in the vibrator 3, current is supplied to at least one of the coils 42 of the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D, causing the vibrator 3 to be displaced radially and axially. During this displacement, due to the gyroscopic effect, a reaction force, i.e., vibration, is generated in the vibration generator 1 due to the displacement of the vibrator 3. Since the displacement of the vibrator 3 is caused not by a motor, but by the magnetic body 41, coil 42 and elastic body 43, the vibration generator 1 can generate vibration with a simple structure. In addition, the manufacturing cost of the vibration generator 1 can be reduced. Furthermore, since there is no space required for a motor to install for the displacement of the vibrator 3 within the housing 2, the housing 2 can be made smaller.
[0031] Furthermore, in the vibration generator 1, the direction of displacement of the oscillator 3 can be controlled over 360 degrees around the axis x by controlling the supply of current to the four first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D. By controlling the direction of displacement of the oscillator 3 in this way, the direction of the reaction force due to the gyroscopic effect can be controlled over 360 degrees around the axis x. For example, in the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D located 180 degrees opposite to the first to fourth displacement mechanisms 4A to 4D where an attractive force is generated by the magnetic material 41 and the coil 42, current may be supplied to the coil 42 so that a repulsive force is generated between the magnetic material 41 and the coil 42. Due to the action of this repulsive force, the oscillator 3 is pushed (displaced) radially and axially in the opposite direction to the side where the attractive force is generated, thereby increasing the force that pulls the oscillator 3 towards the outer circumference.
[0032] Various modifications are possible for the vibration generator 1 described above. For example, the vibration generator 1 may have only one displacement mechanism 4. In this case, it is preferable that the vibration generator 1 has an additional mechanism for holding the vibrator 3 on the base 25. Alternatively, the vibration generator 1 may have two, three, or five or more displacement mechanisms 4, other than four. Furthermore, the multiple displacement mechanisms 4 may be arranged at equal intervals in the circumferential direction around the axis x, or at predetermined intervals that are not equal in the circumferential direction. In addition, the vibration generator 1 may further include a power supply for supplying current to the coil 42, a circuit board on which a control circuit for controlling the supply of current to the coil 42 is mounted, etc. These power supply and circuit board may be housed within the housing 2.
[0033] Furthermore, a lubricant such as grease may be applied between the lower surface 33b of the base 33 and the upper surface 25a of the base 25. Such a lubricant can reduce friction in the sliding motion between the lower surface 33b of the base 33 and the upper surface 25a of the base 25, thereby allowing the vibrator 3 to be displaced smoothly. The base 25 may also form a rolling bearing or a pivot bearing, for example, by installing balls. In addition, while balls may be formed on the lower side of the base 33, the base 25 may be formed to support the balls on the base 33 so that the vibrator 3 can change its orientation. It is preferable that the radius of curvature of the curved surfaces of the lower surface 33b and the upper surface 25a be smaller. A smaller radius of curvature can increase the amount of orientation change of the vibrator 3.
[0034] Furthermore, in each displacement mechanism 4, contrary to the embodiments described above, the magnetic body 41 may be arranged on the outer circumference in the radial direction, while the coil 42 may be arranged on the inner circumference. Also, although the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 are fixed to the elastic body 43, instead, either the magnetic body 41 or the coil 42 may be fixed to the vibrator 3 (base 33), while the other of the magnetic body 41 or the coil 42 is fixed to the elastic body 43. Alternatively, either the magnetic body 41 or the coil 42 may be fixed to the vibrator 3 (base 33), while the other of the magnetic body 41 or the coil 42 is fixed to the housing 2 (cylinder 26). Furthermore, the elastic body 43 may be directly fixed to the vibrator 3 or the housing 2 without using fixing members 44, 45. In addition, the conductors 42b of the magnetic body 41 and the coil 42 may be formed in an annular shape on the outside of the coil spring of the elastic body 43.
