AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The increasing size and weight of wind turbine rotor blades pose challenges in lifting operations, requiring larger and heavier lifting equipment, which increases the risk of damage and manufacturing and shipping costs, and existing solutions exacerbate this risk with high gripping pressures.

Method used

A lightweight blade lifting yoke with a base, retaining devices, upper and lower clamping elements, and a support element that uses a three-point principle to maintain static stability by distributing weight and adjusting clamping pressures based on blade type and weather conditions.

Benefits of technology

Ensures safe, stable, and reliable lifting of large rotor blades with reduced risk of damage by minimizing clamping pressure and utilizing adjustable clamping distances and pressures, thereby reducing material and operational costs.

Abstract

The present invention provides a blade lifting yoke (1) and a method for lifting a wind turbine rotor blade, the blade lifting yoke having at least one crane mount (6) for attachment to a crane, the blade lifting yoke comprising a base and at least one holding device (5), the blade lifting yoke comprising first and second upper (7) and lower (8) clamping elements and support elements (9) attached to the at least one holding device, the upper clamping elements being positioned above respective lower clamping elements and spaced apart substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction from one another to press the rotor blade against the lower clamping elements, and the at least one holding device comprising a support element (9) adapted to be positioned in contact with the second surface of the wind turbine rotor blade at a predetermined distance from one of the lower clamping elements. The clamping mechanism is configured to contact the upper clamping member and the lower clamping element to clamp the wind turbine rotor blade with at least one clamping pressure between the upper clamping element and the lower clamping element such that during a lifting operation, the upper clamping element, the lower clamping element, and the support element provide static stability of the wind turbine rotor blade against the blade lifting yoke.
