Abstract

Implantable prostheses and related methods are generally described. In one embodiment, the prosthesis may be generally ellipsoidal (spherical) in shape and formed from one or more subunits. The subunits may be conical or frustoconical in shape and formed by processing a two-dimensional substrate material. The sidewalls of the subunits may be fixed to one another to increase the rigidity of the prosthesis. In one embodiment, markers may be used to aid in distinguishing the prosthesis within the implantation site using a medical imaging device (e.g., x-ray imaging). In this manner, implantation sites, which may also be the site of recent biopsies and / or resections of diseased tissue, may be easily identified. The prosthesis may be formed from a porous material to induce tissue infiltration, which may promote natural tissue regeneration and result in a more natural-looking and feeling tissue. Tissue infiltration may improve the resistance of the prosthesis to migration after implantation.
