Acoustic precipitation sensor

Abstract

An acoustic precipitation sensor (10) comprising: at least one element (12) that is part of an existing object, the existing structure being positioned such that precipitation to be captured impinges on the element (12), the element (12) being configured such that the impinging precipitation generates an acoustic signal; at least one measurement element (14) positioned relative to the element (12) to capture the acoustic signal; and a signal processing unit (16) configured to receive and process the measurement signal generated by the measurement element (14) in response to the acoustic signal and to determine one or more characteristics of the precipitation based thereon, e.g., in real time.
