Abstract

Improvements to terahertz imaging systems and related methods using the same are disclosed. In a terahertz imaging system comprising a terahertz antenna array composed of multiple antenna elements, each including a patch antenna and a 1-bit phase shifter, the phase pattern applied by each phase shifter can be switched so that the reflection array itself functions as a mixer in the signal path. Such a reflection array can be advantageously implemented in a flip-chip package having a passive resonator, and a processing unit can be located in the same location as each patch antenna to calculate appropriate drive signals for the phase shifters.
