AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods struggle to produce discrete carbon nanotubes reliably for use as reinforcing or conductive fillers in polymer composites due to their tendency to form bundles or ropes, limiting their commercial application in additive manufacturing and molding processes.

Method used

The development of novel compositions with discrete carbon nanotube coatings that have controlled porosity and surface modifications, containing less than 20% of the coating as highly intertwined bundles, improve sinterability, wettability, and fluidity, enabling their use in various molding processes.

Benefits of technology

The coatings enhance the performance of materials by improving sinterability, wettability, and flowability, making them suitable for additive manufacturing and injection molding, and providing enhanced properties such as conductivity and strength.

Abstract

Novel compositions for producing particles, powders, or strands having a coating of discrete carbon nanotubes, wherein the coating has a selected range of porosity, the discrete carbon nanotubes have selected surface modifications, and the coating improves the wettability or flowability of the material through the pores of the carbon nanotube coating. The coating has less than about 20% mass of bundles or ropes of carbon nanotubes larger than about 5 micrometers, thereby improving the performance of printed parts. The composition may also include a coating with a thickness of about 5 nanometers to about 5000 nanometers on particles or polymer strands with a diameter of less than about 5000 micrometers, the coating including discrete carbon nanotubes and / or surface modifications of discrete carbon nanotubes.
