A battery pack and a method for installing the same. The battery pack comprises one or more battery stacks, each stack having stacked modules. The stacked modules include a stack interface module, one or more battery modules, and one or more string disconnection modules (SDMs). Each SDM is located in one of the stacks and connected to a battery string consisting of one or more series-connected battery modules, and is configured to selectively connect or disconnect each battery module in the battery string. At least one of the SDMs in any stack is separated from the stack interface module of that stack by at least one of the battery modules of that stack.
