Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol generating article comprising a first aerosol generating substrate and a second aerosol generating substrate. One or both of the first aerosol generating substrate and the second aerosol generating substrate contain plant constituents.
Background Art
[0002] Aerosol generating articles in which an aerosol generating substrate such as a tobacco-containing substrate is combusted or heated rather than combusted are known in the art. To provide additional flavor to the consumer during use, it is known to incorporate flavor additives into the aerosol generating article. The flavorant may be used to enhance the flavor generated with the combustion or heating of the aerosol generating substrate within the aerosol generating article. The flavorant can be used to deliver taste (flavor), smell (odor), or both taste and smell to the user inhaling the aerosol.
[0003] It is also known to provide a flavorant in a conventional combustible cigarette that is smoked by igniting the end opposite the mouthpiece of the cigarette to generate inhalable smoke such that the tobacco rod burns. To provide additional flavor to the mainstream smoke as the tobacco burns, typically one or more flavorants are mixed with the tobacco within the tobacco rod. Such flavorants can be provided, for example, as essential oils or as natural plant materials such as natural cut cloves. An example of such a smoking article is the "kretek" cigarette known as a cigarette in which clove material such as clove particles is included together with the tobacco within the tobacco rod. When the clove of the kretek cigarette burns, its flavor and aroma are released into the mainstream smoke.
[0004] It is desirable to provide an aerosol generating article that delivers an aerosol with improved flavor and sensory stimulation characteristics. Furthermore, it is also desirable to improve the customization of the flavor and sensory stimulation characteristics of the aerosol generating article. [Overview of the Initiative]
[0005] The present invention provides an aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-generating article may comprise a first aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating article may comprise a second aerosol-generating substrate. The second aerosol-generating substrate may be downstream of the first aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating article may comprise a wrapper. The wrapper may surround at least one of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the second aerosol-generating substrate. One or both of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the second aerosol-generating substrate may contain one or more plant components in a weight percentage of 5 percent or more. The composition of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the composition of the second aerosol-generating substrate may be different. One or both of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the second aerosol-generating substrate may contain tobacco or tobacco material.
[0006] The present invention provides an aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-generating article comprises a first aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating article comprises a second aerosol-generating substrate. The second aerosol-generating substrate is downstream of the first aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating article comprises a wrapper. The wrapper surrounds at least one of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the second aerosol-generating substrate. One or both of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the second aerosol-generating substrate contain 5% by weight or more of one or more plant components. The composition of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the composition of the second aerosol-generating substrate are different. One or both of the first aerosol-generating substrate and the second aerosol-generating substrate contain tobacco or tobacco material.
[0007] Advantageously, providing a first aerosol-generating substrate and a second aerosol-generating substrate, each having a different composition, wherein one or both of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates contain 5% by weight of one or more plant components, and one or both of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates contain tobacco or tobacco material, may allow the flavors provided by each of the two aerosol-generating substrates to be combined and mixed within the generated aerosol. Combining and mixing flavors may improve the overall flavor and sensory stimulating properties of the generated aerosol.
[0008] Advantageously, providing a first aerosol-generating substrate and a second aerosol-generating substrate, each having a different composition, wherein one or both of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates contain 5% by weight or more of one or more plant components, and one or both of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates contain tobacco or tobacco material, improves flavor customization. For example, new aerosol flavors may be generated by providing different combinations of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates. In other words, the ability to provide different compositions for each of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates may improve the versatility of articles that can be constructed using them, compared to known articles containing a single aerosol-generating substrate.
[0009] Advantageously, the ability to easily provide different compositions for each of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates can improve the versatility of constructing articles using them without increasing the complexity of article manufacturing or requiring modifications to existing manufacturing processes. This may also reduce manufacturing costs. For example, existing manufacturing techniques can be used to provide each of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates having different compositions, and then the first and second aerosol-generating substrates can be combined in different configurations to achieve the desired flavor of the generated aerosol. This may result in the generation of a new and distinctive flavor of the generated aerosol, thereby enhancing the user experience.
[0010] Advantageously, providing a second aerosol-generating substrate downstream of a first aerosol-generating substrate may improve the blending of the flavors of the first and second aerosol-generating substrates. Improved flavor blending may improve the overall flavor and sensory characteristics of the generated aerosol.
[0011] Advantageously, providing a second aerosol generating substrate downstream of a first aerosol generating substrate may improve the filtration of aerosols generated by the first aerosol generating substrate as a result of the aerosols passing downstream past the second aerosol generating substrate. Improved aerosol filtration may be particularly advantageous when the aerosol generating article does not have an end filter. Advantageously, providing a second aerosol generating substrate downstream of a first aerosol generating substrate may enable the provision of an aerosol generating article without an end filter. Providing an aerosol generating article without an end filter may reduce waste after use of the aerosol generating article.

[0244] The longitudinal axis 106 extends centrally along the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating article 100. The first aerosol generating substrate 102 and the second aerosol generating substrate 104 are arranged end-to-end along the longitudinal axis 106. The second aerosol generating substrate 104 is positioned downstream of the first aerosol generating substrate 102. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the first aerosol generating substrate 102 and the second aerosol generating substrate 104 are arranged such that the upstream end of the second aerosol generating substrate 104 abuts against the downstream end of the first aerosol generating substrate 102.

[0284] Figure 4 shows a schematic cross-sectional view of a portion of an aerosol generating system 500, which includes the aerosol generating article 300 and the aerosol generating device 400 shown in Figure 3.
[0285] The aerosol generator 400 includes a device cavity 402. The device cavity 402 is configured to receive at least a portion of the aerosol generating article 300. The distal end of the device cavity 402 has a closed end. The proximal end of the device cavity 402 has an open end. The aerosol generating article 300 can be inserted into the device cavity 402 through the open end of the device cavity 402.
[0286] The aerosol generator 400 has an inductor coil 404 that surrounds the device cavity 402 and also surrounds the susceptor element 326 of the aerosol generating article 300 when the aerosol generating article 300 is inserted into the device cavity 402. [0287] The aerosol generator 400 includes a power supply (not shown) and control electronic equipment (not shown) arranged to supply power to an inductor coil 404 to generate a fluctuating magnetic field within the device cavity 402 and inductively heat the susceptor element 326.
[0288] During use, the user inserts the aerosol generating article 300 into the device cavity 402 of the aerosol generator 400 and then activates the aerosol generator 400. Activating the aerosol generator activates the inductor coil 404. The activation of the inductor coil 404 may be performed manually, or it may occur automatically in response to the user inhaling the aerosol generating article 300 while it is inserted into the device cavity 402. Activating the inductor coil 404 increases the temperature of the susceptor element 326 as it interacts with the fluctuating electromagnetic field provided by the inductor coil 404. The susceptor element 326 then heats the first aerosol generating substrate 302 and the second aerosol generating substrate 304 to generate aerosols. The user inhales some aerosol generated from the heating of the first aerosol generating substrate 302 and the second aerosol generating substrate 304 by sucking on the mouth-end filter 316 of the aerosol generating article 300.
