Abstract

This disclosure relates to an inertial sensor for measuring inertia along a sensing axis. The sensor comprises an atomic interferometer having a pulse generator for generating one or more pulsed light beams defined by their respective pulse durations to arrange atoms in superposition, recombining the atoms to measure atomic interference, and calculating inertia based on the measured interference. The sensor further comprises an auxiliary accelerometer configured to measure lateral acceleration with respect to one or more of the pulsed light beams, and a control system configured to calculate the lateral offset of atoms to the pulsed light beams caused by the measured lateral acceleration with respect to one or more of the light beams, and to increase the pulse duration and adjust the pulse timing to compensate for the reduced beam intensity applied to the atoms as a result of the lateral offset.
