Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] Cross-Reference to Related Applications This application claims the benefit of and priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 590,487 filed on October 16, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
[0002] The present disclosure generally relates to stable cannabinoid matrices that function as bases for a plurality of flavoring compounds, and more particularly relates to plant-derived cannabinoid matrices that demonstrate resistance to photo-oxidation, crystallization, and discoloration, and have a viscosity in the range of approximately 1000 to 5000 centipoise at room temperature.
Background Art
[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, the materials described in this section are not prior art to the claims in this specification, and are not admitted to be prior art by inclusion in this section.
[0004] Cannabinoids refer to substances that interact with cannabinoid receptors in the human body. Cannabinoids and their receptors are part of our body's system to help regulate a variety of normal functions, including pain, cravings, and inflammation. The human body produces its own cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids). Cannabis plants also produce cannabinoids. Cannabis plants have merely existed for 30 million years, but contain millions of biologically active substances.
[0005] Cannabidiol (CBD) is one such substance that is naturally crystalline. Many other minor cannabinoids do not readily form crystals. And most forms of CBD distillates contain limited concentrations of minor cannabinoids. In most hemp vape cartridges, cannabinoids must be diluted and emulsified with undesirable substances for the vape oil to maintain its liquid state. Therefore, it is difficult for vape oils to have high concentrations of cannabinoids, potentially resulting in a loss of some of the medical and therapeutic benefits and effects of cannabinoids. Some tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-free products may include product options that contain crystallized distillates to produce vape oils with higher concentrations of cannabinoids that can remain in a liquid state and be used in many product categories. Such crystallized distillates are solid at room temperature and must be dissolved to construct blended oil products, possessing a distinctive and unpleasant taste across formulations that strictly limits which flavorings produce a product acceptable to the end consumer, with a net cannabinoid content of approximately 65% as a base product, and producing a distinctive pungent taste even when used in low volumes to introduce broad-spectrum components into THC formulations. Hemp oil-based products may crystallize in vials, may contain D8-THC which is illegal in some markets, and may not present a broad-spectrum product; the closest analog is the D9-THC distillate formulation.
[0006] There is growing interest in fully utilizing the surrounding effects and medical benefits of these cannabinoid extracts. The beneficial effects of this proposed synergistic relationship between major and minor cannabinoids in cannabis extracts have not yet been clearly demonstrated. However, existing evidence clearly suggests that the effects of individual cannabinoids are enhanced when all cannabis components act together. Therefore, it is desirable to utilize the medical and therapeutic effects by increasing the surrounding effects through more stable forms of cannabinoid extracts. [Overview of the project]

[0033] In one embodiment, the mixture 70 may contain components 40, 45, and 60 to form a stable matrix. For example, for stability, the mixture 70 may contain at least 80% of components 40 and 45 in a ratio of about 50:50. Such a 50:50 ratio of components 40 and 45 may be slightly adjusted to control the viscosity of the mixture 70. The remaining about 20% of the mixture 70 may be about half component 60 and about half any combination of components 40, 45, 50, 55, and / or 65. In another embodiment, the mixture 70 may contain up to 50% component 60, with the remaining 50% containing components 40 and 45 in a ratio of about 50:50 for stability.
[0034] In one embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise about 40% by weight of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 10% of component 50, and about 10% of component 60. In another embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise about 43% by weight of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 10% of component 50, and about 7% of component 60. In yet another embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise about 40% by weight of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 5% of component 50, about 5% of component 55, and about 10% of component 60. In yet another embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise about 43% by weight of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 5% of component 50, about 5% of component 55, and about 7% of component 60.
[0035] In some embodiments, the mixture 70 may also optionally contain tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC) 65. In such embodiments, the mixture 70 may comprise, by weight, about 20% of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 10% of component 50, about 10% of component 60, and about 20% of component 65. In another embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise, by weight, about 25% of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 10% of component 50, about 7% of component 60, and about 15% of component 65. In yet another embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise, by weight, about 30% of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 5% of component 50, about 5% of component 55, about 10% of component 60, and about 10% of component 65. In another embodiment, the mixture 70 may comprise about 35% by weight of component 40, about 40% of component 45, about 5% of component 50, about 5% of component 55, about 7% of component 60, and about 5% of component 65.
[0036] In 104, a flavoring compound 80 may be added to the mixture 70. While the mixture 70 may be maintained at its melting temperature, the flavoring compound 80 is added and mixed with the mixture 70 to form a flavored mixture 90. The flavoring compound 80 may include, but is not limited to, any natural and / or synthetic flavoring molecules, including plant compounds containing flavonoids and terpenes, artificial compounds, and synthetic versions of natural compounds. Once the flavored mixture 90 is mixed and completely homogenized, it may be cooled to room temperature and become a stabilized, room-temperature storable form. The flavored mixture 90 may have a viscosity of about 3000 to about 5000 centipoise at room temperature (about 25°C), which may be optimal for array filling of full vaporization pods and single-piece flow assemblies.
[0037] Either mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90 may be bottled for later filling, transferred directly to a filling machine for immediate filling, or used for direct manual filling of vaporization pods. Optimal storage conditions for mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90 may consist of any other packaging capable of protecting the oil from air and light exposure and protecting the cannabinoid oil from air and light exposure, such as amber vials with phenolic cones, aluminum bottles pre-treated for handling terpenes, laboratory glassware stored in cabinets.
[0038] The mixture 70 or the flavored mixture 90 may be placed inside a pod, packaged, and protected from deterioration by air and light, resulting in an extended shelf life.
[0039] [Table 1]
[0040] [Table 2]
[0041] In Examples 1-12, all components were isolated and purified to concentrations exceeding approximately 90%, and in some cases, the component concentrations were of a purity of approximately 99% or better, which translates to a final cannabinoid concentration of approximately 80-90% for each example of mixture 70. In mixture 70, the liquid-to-crystal ratio may be variable and can directly affect the viscosity of the oil. Mixture 70 may have a target viscosity of approximately 3000-5000 centipoise, but other viscosity ranges may be used. Once mixed, mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90 may be liquid at room temperature (approximately 25°C), which is ideal for machine-based array filling because the normal leakage rate is directly proportional to the temperature and viscosity at the time of filling.
[0042] The oil matrix according to this disclosure may provide an oil matrix that does not contain D9-THC. The oil matrix according to this disclosure may provide an oil matrix that does not contain a base terpene. The oil matrix according to this disclosure may provide an oil matrix that can be flavored with a wide range of flavoring materials. The oil matrix according to this disclosure may provide an oil matrix having an optimal viscosity for filling and vaporization performance at room temperature. The oil matrix according to this disclosure may provide an oil matrix that may be mildly psychoactive according to a test group. The oil matrix according to this disclosure may provide an oil matrix that can be stored at room temperature for more than 60 days.
[0043] In another embodiment, the oil matrix, such as mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90, may be prepared by any of the components 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65 derived from high-terpene full-spectrum extracts. High-terpene full-spectrum extracts can be derived from extraction methods in that the final product preserves flavonoids, phenolic amides, and sterols while removing plant material. Components 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65 of mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90 may be adjusted to fit the matrix of mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90, thereby achieving stability by balancing the material with the addition of more cannabinoids. In some embodiments, the high-terpene extract (THE) of component 40, 45, 50, 55, or 65 may be used as terpene component 60 in the oil matrix of mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90.
[0044] As new extracts and methods are constantly being developed, it is intended that the oil matrix of mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90 may contain new and novel extracts of components 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65 as components.
[0045] In the initial tests of more than several dozen used to determine the formulations in Tables 1 and 2, the following results were observed: The liquid-to-crystalline component ratios of components 40, 45, 55, 60, and 65 affected the viscosity of the final product, mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90. It was found that different cannabinoids could be substituted for others within the oil matrix of mixture 70 or flavored mixture 90. For example, D9-THC from component 65 was used to replace CBC from component 40. It was also found that the amounts of crystalline components of components 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65 could be variable. The oil matrix of mixture 70 and flavored mixture 90 flowed readily at room temperature. It was also found that CBN from component 55 had a maximum solubility of 5%. Shelf stability tests were performed on the example of oil matrix mixture 70 from Tables 1 and 2, and it was demonstrated that there was no significant color change, no crystallization, and stability persisted at room temperature over a two-month period of testing.
[0046] Flavoring 80 is required for the flavored mixture 90, but the composition and profile of the added flavoring 80 are variable. During the above tests, 10 different flavored mixtures 90 were prepared using different flavorings 80. Consistent physical properties such as color, crystallization resistance, and overall stability were demonstrated in all flavored mixtures 90.
