Abstract
Description
BACKGROUND ART
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS This application claims the benefit of U.S. Application No. 18 / 621,436 filed on March 29, 2024 and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 591,030 filed on October 17, 2023, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.
[0002] Identifying animal ear tags for livestock such as cattle and pigs are widely used. The most common form of these tags includes two components formed of plastic or a similar resilient material, which can be attached to the livestock's ear by piercing the components through the livestock's ear. Typically, such tags include an identification number and / or are made in different colors to provide identification information relating to the animal wearing the tag. The identification tags may take other forms such as single-piece identification tags, EIN button tags, neckband identification strips, and neckband identification tags.
[0003] Various techniques have also been devised for releasing insecticides or insect repellents using such tags, via separately applied tags or by adding some type of carrier to the identification ear tag.
[0004] In one such approach, the tag itself is made of a material impregnated with an insecticide, which exudes over a period of time to provide control against flies and other insects. A problem with the use of impregnated livestock tags is that the insecticide is exhausted within a relatively short period of time. If continuous insect control is desired, the ear tag itself must be removed and replaced with a new tag. This is time-consuming and requires forming another hole in the animal's ear to apply and / or reapply a new insecticide tag.
[0005] Another approach involves creating a separate disc made from a carrier impregnated with insecticide, designed to slide over the pin of the ear tag. Once the insecticide is depleted, the disc must be removed from the pin, and then a new disc must be placed on top of it. However, this disc replacement is a cumbersome process.
[0006] Therefore, it is desirable to provide a delivery system for animal hygiene compound that releases animal hygiene products over a period of time to provide sanitary benefits to animals, such as controlling flies and other insects, and which can be used in conjunction with any and all commercially available livestock tags. Furthermore, it is desirable to provide such a delivery system for animal hygiene compound that is easy to apply, remove, and replace without requiring any additional holes in the animal's ear. [Overview of the project]
[0007] The systems and methods described herein solve these and other problems by providing an animal hygiene product delivery system in the form of a removable sticker that can be attached to any livestock tag and is easy to apply and remove. In some embodiments, the animal hygiene product sticker may include a container capable of holding an animal hygiene product in liquid or solid form for use with any conventional tag. In some embodiments, the animal hygiene product sticker may be designed to be attached to the attachment button of an unmodified conventional or RFID animal tag, such as an ear identification tag. The animal hygiene product sticker may be attached to a new or existing identification tag. In some embodiments, the animal hygiene product sticker may be attached to an impregnated livestock tag attached to an animal's ear, after the insecticide has been used up.
[0008] In one embodiment, according to several implementation configurations, this specification describes a method and system comprising a container for animal hygiene products, comprising a body, a bonding material, and a pull tab. The body has a first surface and a second surface. The body is made of a weather-resistant material impregnated with an animal hygiene product compound, such as an insecticide compound. The bonding material is attached to the first surface of the body. The bonding material is weather-resistant and is configured to allow the body to be detachably attached to the tag body of an animal tag. The pull tab is attached to the body. The pull tab does not have a bonding material.
[0009] In another aspect, the present disclosure describes a method for manufacturing a container for animal hygiene products. In this method, the following steps may be performed in any order: a step of applying an animal hygiene product compound to a body having a first surface and a second surface, wherein the body is made of a weather-resistant material; a step of applying a bonding material to at least a portion of the first surface of the body, wherein the bonding material is weather-resistant; and a step of forming the body into a predetermined shape configured to be attached to the tag body of an animal tag, wherein the body has a pull tab.
[0010] In another embodiment, the present disclosure describes a method comprising the following steps: attaching a first body of a first animal hygiene product container to the surface of a tag attached to an animal; removing the first body of the first animal hygiene product container from the surface of the tag after a certain amount of time has elapsed; and attaching a second body of a second animal hygiene product container to the tag body of the tag attached to the animal, thereby replacing the first animal hygiene product container with a second animal hygiene product container without removing the tag from the animal. [0021] The following detailed description of exemplary embodiments refers to the accompanying drawings. The same reference numerals in different drawings may identify the same or similar elements.
[0022] As used in this specification, the terms "comprises", "comprising", "includes", "including", "has", "having", or any other variations thereof, are intended to cover non-exclusive inclusion. For example, a process, method, article, or apparatus that comprises a list of elements is not necessarily limited to only those elements, but may include other elements not expressly listed or inherent to such process, method, article, or apparatus. Furthermore, unless expressly stated to the contrary, "or" refers to an inclusive or rather than an exclusive or. For example, the condition A or B is satisfied by any one of the following: A is true (or present) and B is false (or not present), A is false (or not present) and B is true (or present), and both A and B are true (or present).
[0023] Furthermore, the use of "a" or "an" is employed to describe elements and components of the embodiments herein. This is done merely for convenience and to give a general sense of the inventive concept. This description should be read to include one or more, and the singular also includes the plural, unless it is clearly indicated otherwise.
[0024] Furthermore, the use of the term "plurality" is meant to convey "more than one", unless expressly stated to the contrary.
[0025] As used herein, modifiers such as "about", "approximately", and combinations and variations thereof are intended to include not only the exact quantity or value that they modify, but also some slight deviation therefrom that may result from, for example, manufacturing tolerances, measurement errors, wear and tear, stresses applied to various parts, and combinations thereof.
[0026] As used herein, the term “substantially” means that the parameter, event, or situation described thereafter occurs entirely, or occurs to a large extent or degree. For example, “substantially” means that the parameter, event, or situation described thereafter occurs for at least 90% of the time, or at least 91%, or at least 92%, or at least 93%, or at least 94%, or at least 95%, or at least 96%, or at least 97%, or at least 98%, or at least 99%, or that the dimension or measurement is within the range of at least 90%, or at least 91%, or at least 92%, or at least 93%, or at least 94%, or at least 95%, or at least 96%, or at least 97%, or at least 98%, or at least 99% of the referenced dimension or measurement.
[0027] The use of the terms "at least one" or "one or more" is understood to include one, as well as any number greater than one. Furthermore, the use of the phrase "at least one of X, V, and Z" is understood to include X alone, V alone, Z alone, as well as any combination of X, V, and Z.
[0028] The use of ordinal terms (i.e., "1st," "2nd," "3rd," "4th," etc.) is solely for the purpose of distinguishing two or more items and does not imply any order, sequence, or importance of one item over another, or any additional order, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
[0029] Any reference to “one implementation” or “implementation” used herein means that any particular element, feature, structure, or characteristic described in relation to the implementation is included in at least one embodiment. The phrase “in one implementation” appearing in various parts of the specification does not necessarily refer to the same implementation.
[0030] As used herein, “animal hygiene product compounds” refers to products that may be approved by the FDA and are designed to be applied to animals to improve animal hygiene. Exemplary animal hygiene product compounds include insecticide compounds, sedative compounds, and compounds configured for transdermal delivery (optionally including skin penetration enhancers such as propylene glycol, alcohol, or surfactants). Exemplary compounds configured for transdermal delivery, i.e., delivery through the skin, include hormones, vitamin supplements, drugs / medicines configured to deliver analgesia, and drugs / medicines for treating motion sickness.
[0031] As used herein, “insecticide compound” refers to a substance used to reduce the harmful effects of parasites by means of repellent, growth regulation, sterilization, or any other means, including but not limited to pyrethroids, permethrin, zeta-cypermethrin, ivermectin, avermectin, abamectin, milbemectin, diazinon, chlorpyrifos, macrocyclic lactones, organophosphate esters, or combinations thereof, as approved by the EPA. Furthermore, natural raw materials, including but not limited to lemongrass and citrus oils, may also be used.
[0032] As used herein, the term “container” refers to an object that can be used to hold or transport animal hygiene product compounds.
[0033] Next, we refer to drawings in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate the same or similar components throughout different drawings. Next, referring to Figures 1 to 3, we see a type of two-piece livestock identification ear tag 10 (which may be referred to herein as “Identification Tag 10”) commonly used to provide an identification number 12 (or other useful marking) for the visual identification of livestock. Identification Tag 10 may comprise a tag body 14 and an attachment button 16 used to fasten the tag body 14 to the ear of an animal, as is known in the art.
[0034] The tag body 14 may be molded from a weather-resistant and moderately flexible material such as urethane plastic, other suitable plastic, or similar material, which is flexible enough to allow the identification tag 10 to be bent and twisted during use.
[0035] The tag body 14 may be made to include a front 20, a back 22, an upper 24, and a lower 26. The upper 24 of the identification tag 10 may have a circular boss 30 having a first opening 32 extending a predetermined distance within the circular boss 30 from a first end 34, and a second opening 36 extending from a second end 38 through the circular boss 30. The first opening 32 may have a first diameter larger than the second diameter of the second opening 36. The second opening 36 may be coaxially aligned with the first opening 32.
[0036] To attach the identification tag 10 to the ear of livestock, the attachment button 16 comprises an elongated shaft 50 terminating at a tip 52 having a collar 54. The tip 52 penetrates the ear of the livestock and through a second opening 36, allowing the collar 54 to be seated in the first opening 32 of a circular boss 30. The attachment button 16 may also have an alignment opening 56 extending a predetermined distance from a surface 58 into the elongated shaft 50, the alignment opening 56 being configured to receive a portion of a tag applicator (not shown) to assist in the alignment of the attachment button 16 when the tip 52 of the attachment button 16 is inserted into the ear of the livestock and into the second opening 36 to seat the collar 54 in the first opening 32 of the circular boss 30.
[0037] The structures described herein are conventional, widely used livestock identification ear tags, such as those described in U.S. Patent No. 3,260,007, which is incorporated in whole herein by reference. Typically, such identification tags, as well as branding, simply provide the function of identifying animals considered assets, such as cattle, sheep, and goats. Livestock identification tags may be applied to multiple animals relating to a particular herd by assigning each animal a specific identification number 12, as illustrated in Figure 1. In one implementation of the concept of this disclosure, at least one animal hygiene product dispensing container 60 may be detachably attached to each of the identification tags 10 (for clarity only, only one is shown in Figure 1). The animal hygiene product dispenser 60 (which in some embodiments may be referred to herein as the "animal hygiene product sticker 60") may be configured to continuously and passively or actively dispense animal hygiene product compounds, such as insecticide compounds, to a portion of animals over a period of time in order to prevent, repel, and / or prevent flies or other parasites from harming the animals to which the identification tag 10 is attached.
[0038] When the insecticide compound is used up or otherwise rendered ineffective, at least a portion of the animal hygiene product dispensing container 60 may be removed from the identification tag 10 without removing it from the animal's ear and discarded. A new animal hygiene product dispensing container 60 (or a portion thereof) may then be placed on the identification tag 10, and the distribution of the insecticide compound to the animal can be continued without requiring any removal or modification of the identification tag 10.
[0039] The animal hygiene product container 60 comprises a main body 62, a joining material 64, and a pull tab 66 which may be formed as part of the main body 62.
[0040] The main body 62 has a first surface 68 and a second surface 70 opposite the first surface 68. The main body 62 forms a reservoir for holding animal hygiene product compounds, such as insecticide compounds, and for dispensing them from the animal hygiene product container 60. The size (e.g., width and spread) and depth of the main body 62 may be configured to provide a predetermined surface area for dispensing a predetermined amount of animal hygiene product compound, such as an insecticide, over a predetermined period of time. For example, the predetermined amount of insecticide may vary depending on the type of animal and / or the type of parasite, such as the insect or insect species being controlled. Furthermore, the predetermined surface area of the main body 62 may be determined by a predetermined amount of time for which the animal hygiene product container 60 is designed to be effective. For example, in northern climates, the seasons for blood-sucking flies, gnats, and other ectoparasites may be shorter compared to southern climates. As a result, animal hygiene product containers 60 designed and / or sold for livestock producers in northern climates may have a smaller surface area than those designed and / or sold for livestock producers in southern climates.
[0041] The body 62 may be made of a weather-resistant material such as a thermoplastic material such as flexible polyvinyl chloride, impregnated with one or more insecticide compounds. The insecticide compounds gradually and continuously migrate to the surface of the body 62 and are passively rubbed onto the animal's fur and / or skin, for example, when the animal moves. The insecticide compounds may kill, repel, regulate the growth of, sterilize, or reduce the harmful effects of external parasites, including insects, mites, and other lower organisms that attack animals, by any other means. The body 62 may be round or any other geometric or unusual shape.
[0042] The bonding material 64 may be applied to or attached to the first surface 68 of the body 62, which may be referred to herein as the back surface or underside of the body 62. As used herein, the term “bonding material” may mean an adhesive, often a pressure-sensitive adhesive, or a tack, or a combination of adhesives / tacks, that has sufficient adhesive quality (i.e., bonding or tackiness, respectively) to create a weather-resistant connection between the body 62 and a portion of the identification tag 10, e.g., the tag body 14, for a period ranging from one to four months, and that also allows the body 62 to be removed from the identification tag 10 (e.g., the tag body 14) without damaging the tag body 14. For example, the bonding material 64 may be selected from commercially available adhesives that can resist the separation of the animal hygiene product container 60 from the identification tag 10 under normal load conditions for a given period, but does not have such strong adhesion that the animal hygiene product container 60 cannot be removed without destroying or damaging the tag body 14 of the identification tag 10 when desired (e.g., when the insecticide has been used up). The specified period may range from one to six months, for example. In one preferred implementation, the bonding material 64 is a biodegradable polymer-based pressure-sensitive adhesive, such as those described in the paper entitled "Sustainable polycarbonate adhesives for dry and aqueous conditions with thermoresponsive properties" published in Nature Communications 10,5478 (2019) (accessible at https: / / doi.org / 10.1038 / s41467-019-13449-y).
[0043] The pull tab 66 can be used to remove the animal hygiene product container 60 from the identification tag 10. The pull tab 66 extends from the body 62 and provides additional leverage to allow for easier removal of the animal hygiene product container 60. While the pull tab 66 extends from the body 62, it does not need to be impregnated with an insecticide compound and does not need to have a bonding material 64. For example, if the bonding material 64 is applied to the body 62, the bonding material 64 does not need to be applied to the pull tab 66.
[0044] In some implementations, the pull tab 66 may be made of a different material than the main body 62. For example, the pull tab 66 may be made of a flexible material such as urethane plastic, other suitable plastic, or similar.
[0045] Next, referring to Figure 4, an animal hygiene product container 80 is shown. The animal hygiene product container 80 is similar to the animal hygiene product container 60. Therefore, for the sake of brevity, only the differences will be described in detail herein. The animal hygiene product container 80 may comprise a body 82, a joining material 84, a pull tab 86 which may be formed as part of the body 82, and a reinforcing member 88 which may be formed within the body 82 and connected to the pull tab 86.
[0046] The pull tab 86 and reinforcing member 88 may be made of a flexible but weather-resistant material stronger than the material forming the main body 82. For example, the pull tab 86 and reinforcing member 88 may be made of urethane plastic, other suitable plastic, or similar materials. The pull tab 86 and reinforcing member 88 may be interconnected or formed integrally. Since the main body 82 may be made of a relatively soft, flexible thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride, the pull tab 86 and reinforcing member 88 can assist in removing the animal hygiene product container 80 when it is attached to the identification tag 10, for example.
[0047] Next, referring to Figure 5, the animal hygiene product container 100 is shown. The animal hygiene product container 100 has a similar structure and function to the animal hygiene product container 60. The animal hygiene product container 100 may comprise a body 102, a joining material 104, and a pull tab 106 which may be formed as part of the body 102 or attached to the body 102. Due to the similarities between the animal hygiene product container 100 and the animal hygiene product container 60, generally only the differences between the animal hygiene product container 100 and the animal hygiene product container 60 will be discussed below.
[0048] The main body 102 may have a plurality of waffle-shaped depressions 108 (only one of which is referenced in Figure 5), which are filled with an insecticide compound and then covered with a semiporous material (not shown). The insecticide compound and semiporous covering material placed in the depressions 108 of the main body 102 are selected to distribute the insecticide compound so that it slowly passes through or is released through the semiporous covering material and rubbed onto an animal wearing the identification tag 10 or onto another animal that the tagged animal comes into contact with.
[0049] Next, referring to Figure 6, a two-part animal hygiene product container system 150 that can be detachably attached to the identification tag 10 is illustrated. The animal hygiene product container system 150 may comprise a fixed part 152 and a detachable part 154.
[0050] The fixed portion 152 may be permanently or semi-permanently attached (e.g., riveted, welded, bolted, epoxy bonded, etc.) to the front 20 or back 22 of the identification tag 10 to provide a mounting point for the removable portion 154. For mounting the removable portion 154, the fixed portion 152 may comprise a first component 160 (illustrated as a hook component, for example), and the removable portion 154 may comprise a second component 162 of a cooperating hook-and-loop fastener component (illustrated as a loop component, for example). Several well-known trademarks for hook-and-loop fasteners exist, the most readily recognizable of which is Velcro®.
[0051] The removable part 154 may include a main body 170 and a pull tab 172. The main body 170 may be impregnated with an insecticide compound as described above. The fixed part 152 may or may not be impregnated with an insecticide compound as described above.
[0052] Referring next to Figure 7, an animal hygiene product container system 200 that can be detachably attached to the identification tag 10 is shown. The container system 200 may comprise a first animal hygiene product container 202 and a second animal hygiene product container 204. The first animal hygiene product container 202 and the second animal hygiene product container 204 are similar to the animal hygiene product container 60 described above. Therefore, for the sake of brevity, only the differences will be described in detail herein.
[0053] The first animal hygiene product container 202 may be attached to the front 20 of the identification tag 10, and the second animal hygiene product container 204 may be attached to the back 22. Since the first animal hygiene product container 202 may cover the identification number 12, the first animal hygiene product container 202 may have an identification number 210 (or other useful marking) which may be the same number as the identification number 12.
[0054] Alternatively, the first animal hygiene product container 202 may have a marking surface that allows the user to add an identification number or other useful marking, thereby the identification tag 10 still provides the function of identifying livestock.
[0055] Note that in some implementations, only the first animal hygiene product container 202 containing identification number 210 may be provided and used, and may be attached to the front 20, while nothing may be attached to the back 22 of the identification tag 10.
[0056] Next, referring to Figure 8, an identification tag system 300 may be provided with a radio frequency identification unit 302 and an attachment button 304. The identification tag system 300 may be a commercially available system such as the HDX RFID tag sold by Y-Tex®, Inc. (Further information can be found at https: / / www.y-tex.com / livestock-identification-tags / rfid-tags / product / white-rfid-large-hdx).
[0057] To provide protection from insects, an animal hygiene product container 310 may be provided. The animal hygiene product container 310 may be similar to the animal hygiene product containers 60, 80 or the animal hygiene product container system 150 described above. Therefore, for the sake of brevity, only the differences will be described in detail herein.
[0058] The animal hygiene product container 310 may comprise a body 312, a connecting material 314, and a pull tab 316 which may be formed as part of the body 312. The animal hygiene product container 310 may be sized and shaped to be removablely attached to the outer surface 317 of the mounting button 304.
[0059] In some embodiments, the body 312 has an outer perimeter 318 having a cross-sectional dimension 320 that extends across the body 312 from a first portion 322 of the outer perimeter 318 to a second portion 324 of the outer perimeter 318 opposite to the first portion 322. The cross-sectional dimension 320 may be in the range of 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) to 1.5 inches (3.81 centimeters). As shown in Figure 8, the body 312 may have a circular shape, in which embodiment the cross-sectional dimension 320 is the diameter.
[0060] Next, referring to Figure 9, an identification tag system 400 is shown having an identification tag 402 configured to accept a strap (not shown) which can be used to attach the identification tag 402 to an animal, such as by placing the strap around the animal's neck or ankle.
[0061] The identification tag 402 may comprise a tag body 404 which may have a front 406, a back 408, an upper 410, and a lower 412. The upper 410 of the identification tag 402 may comprise an opening 414 which extends through the tag body 404 from the front 406 to the back 408. The opening 414 may be sized and shaped to receive at least a portion of a strap for securing the identification tag 402 to an animal. Although not shown, the identification tag 402 may have an identification number on the front 406, the back 408, or both the front 406 and the back 408 to aid in the visual identification of the animal, as is known in the art.
[0062] The identification tag system 400 may include an animal hygiene product container 60 configured as described above. The animal hygiene product container 60 may be detachably attached to the front 406 or back 408 of the identification tag 402. The animal hygiene product dispensing container 60 may be configured to continuously and passively or actively distribute an insecticide compound to a portion of animals over a period of time in order to prevent, repel, and / or prevent flies or other parasites from harming the animals to which the identification tag 402 is attached.
[0063] In some embodiments, the inventive concepts disclosed herein relate to methods for manufacturing and using animal hygiene product containers 60, 80, or 310. For clarification purposes, the method will be described in relation to animal hygiene product container 60. However, the method is equally applicable to animal hygiene product containers 80 and 310. The method comprises the steps of: applying an insecticide compound to a body 62 having a first surface 68 and a second surface 70, wherein the body is made of a weather-resistant material; applying a bonding material 64 to at least a portion (or the entirety) of the first surface 68 of the body 62, wherein the bonding material 64 is weather-resistant; and forming the body 62 into a predetermined shape configured to be attached to the surface (e.g., front 20, back 22, or surface 317) of an animal identification tag 10, wherein the body 62 has a pull tab 66.
[0064] To use the animal hygiene product container 60, 80, or the animal hygiene product container system 150, the first body 62 of the first animal hygiene product container 60 is connected to the surface (e.g., front 20, back 22, or front 317) of the identification tag 10 that is connected to the animal's ear. After a certain period of time (e.g., between one and four months), the first animal hygiene product container 60 is replaced with the second animal hygiene product container 60 by the steps of removing the first body 62 of the first animal hygiene product container 60 from the surface of the identification tag 10 and connecting the second body 62 of the second animal hygiene product container 60 to the surface of the identification tag 10 that is connected to the animal's ear.
[0065] The step of connecting the first body 62 of the first animal hygiene product container 60 to the surface of the identification tag 10 may be further defined as the step of applying the first bonding material 64 on the first body 62 of the first animal hygiene product container 60 to the surface of the identification tag 10 that will be connected to the animal's ear.
[0066] In other embodiments, such as the animal hygiene product container system 150, the step of connecting the first body 62 of the first animal hygiene product container 60 to the surface of the identification tag 10 is further defined as the step of permanently or semi-permanently attaching the fixing portion 152 of the first animal hygiene product container 60 to the surface of the identification tag 10, and attaching a removable portion 154 having a body 170 impregnated with an insecticide compound to the fixing portion 152.
[0067] The following is a numbered list of non-limiting exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts disclosed herein.
[0068] 1. A body having a first surface and a second surface, the body being made of a weather-resistant material impregnated with an animal hygiene product compound; A bonding material attached to the first surface of the main body, which is weather-resistant and configured to allow the main body to be detachably attached to the tag body of an animal tag; A pull tab attached to the main body, and a pull tab without a connecting material. A container for animal hygiene products equipped with [a specific feature / feature].
