AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing power supply devices with stacked battery cells face issues of misalignment, expansion, contraction, vibrations, and shocks leading to potential damage and malfunction due to relative movement of battery cells, necessitating thick and heavy bind bars to withstand tensile forces, and the use of elastic separators increases fatigue damage.

Method used

A power supply device with a separator having varying Young's modulus, where the outer edge is highly rigid and the inner region is less rigid, made of a hybrid material of silica aerogel and fiber reinforcement, absorbs expansion and contraction of battery cells, reducing stress on end plates and bind bars, and preventing relative displacement.

Benefits of technology

The solution effectively prevents damage to battery cells by absorbing expansion, reduces stress on end plates and bind bars, and prevents misalignment, thereby enhancing safety and reducing the weight and thickness of these components.

Abstract

A power supply device that absorbs the expansion of battery cells by means of separators and also prevents damage to opening parts of the battery cells. The power supply device comprises a battery block that is formed by layering a plurality of battery cells (1) in the thickness direction with separators (2) therebetween, a pair of end plates that are arranged at either end surface of the battery block, and a binder bar that is connected to the pair of end plates and, via the end plates, fixes the battery block in a pressurized state. At the battery cells (1), sealing plates (12) are air-tightly fixed to opening edges of closed-bottomed battery cases. The separators (2) are elastic and absorb expansion of the battery cells (1) caused by increases in internal pressure by deforming at layering surfaces (2A) that are layered onto opposite surfaces (11A) of the battery cases so as to be in surface contact therewith. The Young's modulus of upper edge parts (2a) that are outer peripheral edge parts of the layering surfaces (2A) is greater than the Young's modulus of inside regions (2b) that are located to the inside of the outer peripheral edge parts.
