AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current cryopreservation methods for red blood cells (RBCs) result in intercellular dehydration and solute effects due to high glycerol content and storage temperature ranges, leading to compromised RBC functionality and efficiency.

Method used

A method and apparatus for cryopreservation using a controlled heat exchange system with optimized cryoprotectant usage and computational fluid dynamics to minimize dehydration and ice formation, involving an inner housing with apertures for heat exchange fluid flow and a low viscosity fluid to rapidly reduce temperature.

Benefits of technology

The method effectively preserves RBCs with reduced cryoprotectant levels, minimizing damage and maintaining functionality, achieving rapid temperature drops to prevent ice crystal formation and extend shelf life.

Abstract

An apparatus for storing a biological product comprising an inner housing disposed within an outer insulated housing, wherein the walls of the inner housing define a compartment for receiving the biological product, the walls having an inlet wall for flowing heat exchange fluid into the compartment, an opposite outlet wall for flowing heat exchange fluid out of the compartment, side walls, and a base, the side walls and base joining the inlet wall to the outlet wall, the inlet wall and outlet wall each including a series of apertures for accommodating continuous heat exchange fluid flow through the apparatus such that during operation, the biological product received within the compartment of the inner housing is immersed in the heat exchange fluid to exchange heat with the heat exchange fluid.
