AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current prosthetic heart valve delivery systems face challenges in percutaneously replacing the mitral valve due to its non-circular, D-shaped or kidney-like shape and complex anatomy, leading to difficulties in deployment, recapture, and potential malfunctions caused by distorted valve supports and radial forces, especially when using devices designed for aortic valve replacement.

Method used

A hydraulic delivery system with a flow switching device that allows for bidirectional movement of the prosthetic heart valve device using a single actuator, enabling easy deployment and recapture by controlling fluid flow through multiple channels and chambers, reducing the need for multiple stopcocks and simplifying the operation.

Benefits of technology

The system facilitates precise and efficient deployment and recapture of prosthetic heart valves, minimizing procedural time and reducing physical and cognitive burden on clinicians, while ensuring accurate positioning and reducing the risk of malfunctions.

Abstract

A flow diverter configured in accordance with embodiments of the present invention may include, for example, a housing including openings to channels that intersect at a junction. The flow diverter may also include, for example, a flow control component disposed at the junction and movable to selectively form paths for fluid communication based on the position of the flow control component. For example, when the flow control component is in a first position, the first path may allow fluid flow that causes deployment of the prosthetic heart valve device, and when the flow control component is in a second position, the second path may allow fluid flow that causes recapture of the prosthetic heart valve device. The flow diverter may include a handle movable to position the flow control component in the first or second position, thereby selectively controlling fluid flow in the delivery system.
