AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Viscous clutches experience issues such as 'morning sickness' and delayed response times due to shear fluid movement during motor shutdown and startup, leading to undesired engagement, parasitic power loss, and hysteresis effects, and require complex active pumping systems that add mass and complexity.

Method used

A passive pump and wiper assembly with multiple subassemblies that vary pumping rates based on clutch engagement, using fixed wipers and bores to manage shear fluid flow, preventing backflow, and maintaining reservoir retention without active controls.

Benefits of technology

Improves clutch responsiveness and reduces 'morning sickness' by efficiently managing shear fluid, enhancing engagement and disengagement times, and eliminating the need for complex active pumping systems.

Abstract

The viscous clutch (120, 220) includes an input member (22) rotatable about a rotational axis (A), an output member (26) selectively rotatable about the rotational axis, an actuation chamber (30) bounded by the input member and the output member, a reservoir (32), a release bore (36) fluidly connecting the reservoir to the actuation chamber, a leading wiper (140A; 240A) extending into the actuation chamber, a leading pump bore (142A; 242A) disposed adjacent the leading wiper and fluidly connecting the actuation chamber to the reservoir, a trailing wiper (140B; 240C) extending into the actuation chamber, and a trailing pump bore (142B; 242C) disposed adjacent the trailing wiper and downstream of the leading pump bore fluidly connecting the actuation chamber to the reservoir. The width of the trailing wiper (WB1; WC2) is greater than the width of the leading wiper (WA1; WA2).
