Abstract
An objective of the present disclosure is to enable, with a relatively easy-to-manufacture structure, the realization of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) capable of transmitting high-input light across several kilometers. The present disclosure is a photonic crystal fiber capable of transmitting three modes, namely a base mode, a first higher order mode, and a second higher order mode, with a plurality of vacancies (12) being formed inside a clad (11) that has a uniform optical refractive index, wherein: the vacancies (12) are arranged in a triangular lattice so as to surround a center of the photonic crystal fiber, without being arranged at the center of the photonic crystal fiber; and a ratio d / Λ of a diameter d of the vacancies (12) to an interval Λ of the vacancies (12) is such that a confinement loss of a third higher order mode in the shortest wavelength in the usable wavelength range is 1.0 db / m or greater and the confinement loss in the longest wavelength is 0.001 db / km or less.
