Abstract
To provide an optical projector that achieves performance levels of contrast and color saturation at a competitive cost without consuming high energy. An optically efficient illumination system that can be used to project light containing an image uses light redirection. Phase modulation devices can be applied to generate a desired light field. Some embodiments provide dual or multi-modulation display or projection systems in which some or all of the modulators not only attenuate the amplitude, but also amplify the amplitude or change the phase, frequency, and polarization of light provided by a light source.
