Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a multilayer ceramic capacitor, and more specifically to a multilayer ceramic capacitor having excellent electric field characteristics. [Background technology]

[0002] In recent years, with the trend toward smaller, thinner, and more multifunctional electronic products, multilayer ceramic capacitors are also required to be smaller, and the packaging of multilayer ceramic capacitors is becoming more highly integrated. Such multilayer ceramic capacitors have the advantages of being small yet high capacity and easy to package, and can be used as components in a variety of electronic devices.

[0003] However, the multilayer ceramic capacitor has a problem in that the thinner the internal electrodes and dielectric layers are made to ensure high capacitance, the more likely they are to be deformed by external forces. In particular, if the internal electrodes are bent or deformed, the designed electric field characteristics are likely not to be achieved.

[0004] Therefore, in order to commercially apply a multilayer ceramic capacitor having a high capacitance and a thin thickness, it is necessary to provide a multilayer ceramic capacitor structure that is less prone to deformation due to an external force and can ensure reliability, thereby improving structural reliability. [0011] Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, the embodiments of the present invention may be modified into various other forms, and the scope of the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described below. Furthermore, the embodiments of the present invention are provided to more completely explain the present invention to those having average knowledge in the art. Therefore, the shapes and sizes of elements in the drawings may be enlarged or reduced, or may be highlighted or simplified for a clearer description, and elements indicated by the same reference numerals in the drawings are the same elements. Furthermore, throughout the specification, when a part "includes" a certain component, it does not mean that other components are excluded, but means that other components may be further included, unless otherwise specified.

[0012] In order to clearly explain the present invention, parts that are not relevant to the explanation are omitted in the drawings, thicknesses are enlarged to clearly show multiple layers and regions, and the same reference symbols are used for components that have the same functions within the same concept.

[0013] Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0014] 1 to 4, a multilayer ceramic capacitor 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a ceramic body 110 including a dielectric layer 111 and first and second internal electrodes 121, 122 arranged to be stacked in a third direction with the dielectric layer 111 sandwiched therebetween, the ceramic body 110 including first and second surfaces S1, S2 facing each other in the stacking direction of the first and second internal electrodes 121, 122, third and fourth surfaces S3, S4 connected to the first and second surfaces S1, S2 and facing each other in the first direction, fifth and sixth surfaces S5, S6 connected to the first and second surfaces S1, S2 and connected to the third and fourth surfaces S3, S4 and facing each other in the second direction, and first and second external electrodes 131, 132 electrically connected to the first and second internal electrodes 121, 122 and arranged on both sides of the ceramic body in the first direction.

[0015] In this case, when the absolute value of the horizontal angle of the second direction of the first internal electrodes 121 with respect to the first surface of the ceramic body is defined as a first angle of the internal electrodes, the total of the first angles may be less than 10°.

[0016] In the multilayer ceramic capacitor according to an embodiment of the present invention, the "length direction" is defined as the "X direction" or "first direction" in Fig. 1, the "width direction" is defined as the "Y direction" or "second direction," and the "thickness direction" is defined as the "Z direction" or "third direction." Here, the "thickness direction" can be used as the same concept as the direction in which the dielectric layers are stacked, i.e., the "stacking direction."

[0017] In an embodiment of the present invention, the shape of the ceramic body 110 is not particularly limited, but may be a hexahedron as shown in the figure.

[0018] The ceramic body 110 may include a first surface S1 and a second surface S2 facing in a third direction, a third surface S3 and a fourth surface S4 connected to the first surface S1 and the second surface S2 and facing in the first direction, and a fifth surface S5 and a sixth surface S6 connected to the first surface S1 to the fourth surface S2 and facing in the second direction.

[0019] The first surface S1 and the second surface S2 can be defined as surfaces facing each other in the thickness direction of the ceramic body 110, which is a third direction, the third surface S3 and the fourth surface S4 can be defined as surfaces facing each other in the length direction, which is the first direction, and the fifth surface S5 and the sixth surface S6 can be defined as surfaces facing each other in the width direction, which is the second direction.

[0020] A plurality of internal electrodes 121, 122 formed inside the ceramic body 110 have one end exposed to a third surface S3 or a fourth surface S4 of the ceramic body. The internal electrodes 121, 122 may be paired with a first internal electrode 121 and a second internal electrode 122 having different polarities. One end of the first internal electrode 121 may be exposed to the third surface S3, and one end of the second internal electrode 122 may be exposed to the fourth surface S4.

[0021] First and second external electrodes 131 and 132 may be formed on a third surface S3 and a fourth surface S4 of the ceramic body and electrically connected to the internal electrodes.

[0022] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the raw material for forming the dielectric layer 111 is not particularly limited as long as it can obtain sufficient capacitance, and for example, a barium titanate-based material, a lead complex perovskite-based material, or a strontium titanate-based material can be used.

[0023] The material for forming the dielectric layer 111 may be a powder such as barium titanate (BaTiO3) to which various ceramic additives, organic solvents, plasticizers, binders, dispersants, etc. may be added according to the purpose of the present invention.

[0024] The ceramic additive may be, for example, a transition metal oxide or transition metal carbide, a rare earth element, magnesium (Mg), or aluminum (Al).

[0025] In one example of the present invention, margin portions can be disposed on both surfaces (fifth and sixth surfaces) in a second direction (Y direction) perpendicular to the first and third directions of the ceramic body.

[0026] Conventionally, the area of the dielectric layer is made larger than that of the internal electrode, and a margin area is formed around the remaining part of the internal electrode, excluding the part connected to the external electrode. However, in this case, when tens to hundreds of dielectric layers are stacked, the dielectric layer stretches to fill the gap, and the internal electrode is bent as well. When the internal electrode is bent, the breakdown voltage (BDV) of the corresponding part decreases, which is a problem.

[0027] Therefore, in the multilayer ceramic capacitor according to an embodiment of the present invention, the margin regions are removed from both sides of the internal electrodes in the second direction to prevent the occurrence of steps due to the internal electrodes, so that the internal electrodes can have angles as described below. Also, the internal electrodes are prevented from bending, which prevents a problem of a decrease in withstand voltage characteristics, thereby improving the reliability of the multilayer ceramic capacitor.

[0028] In addition, the internal electrodes can be protected by disposing marginal portions on both sides of the ceramic body in the second direction. Also, since the marginal portions are formed separately, there is no need to consider manufacturing errors such as misalignment of the internal electrodes. Therefore, the thickness (Wm) of the marginal portions can be set smaller than the thickness of the conventional marginal regions, thereby improving the capacitance per unit volume of the multilayer ceramic capacitor.

[0029] Therefore, when the body 100 includes a margin portion, the margin portion may be disposed on both sides (fifth and sixth sides) in the second direction where the first and second internal electrodes are exposed.

[0030] The margin portion may be made of an insulating material, and may be made of a ceramic material such as barium titanate. In this case, the margin portion may contain the same ceramic material as that contained in the dielectric layer 111, or may be made of the same material as the dielectric layer 111.

[0031] The method for forming the margin portion is not particularly limited, and for example, it can be formed by applying a slurry containing ceramic, or by laminating a dielectric sheet in the second direction on both sides of the ceramic body in the second direction.

[0032] The multilayer ceramic capacitor according to the present invention may include a plurality of internal electrodes 121, 122 arranged alternately with a dielectric layer 111 interposed therebetween. In this case, the first and second internal electrodes 121, 122 may be electrically separated from each other by the dielectric layer 111 arranged therebetween.

[0033] In an embodiment of the present invention, when the absolute value of the horizontal angle of the first internal electrode 121 in the second direction with respect to the first surface S1 of the ceramic body 110 is defined as the first angle of the first internal electrode 121, the total of the first angles may be less than 10°. The total of the first angles of the first internal electrodes 121 may be a value obtained by adding up the absolute values of the horizontal angles measured at the Y direction ends of the first internal electrodes with respect to the XY plane, and may be a total of the horizontal angles measured at the points where the first internal electrodes meet the marginal portions with respect to the XY plane. Referring to FIGS. 4 and 5, the total of the horizontal angles (θ1, θ3, ..., θn-1, θ'2, θ'4, ..., θ'n) of the first internal electrodes 121 with respect to the XY plane may be expressed as θ1+θ3+...+θn-1+θ'2+θ'4+...+θ'n. The total of the first angles of the first internal electrodes 121 may be less than 10°, 9° or less, 8° or less, 7° or less, 6° or less, or 5° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more, more than 0°, 0.2° or more, 0.4° or more, 0.6° or more, 0.8° or more, or 1.0° or more. When the total of the first angles of the first internal electrodes satisfies the above range, better electric field characteristics can be ensured.

[0034] In one embodiment of the present invention, the maximum value of the first angle of the first internal electrode 121 may be 1° or less. The maximum value of the first angle may mean the maximum value among the absolute values of the first angles of all the first internal electrodes. The maximum value of the first angle may be 1.0° or less, 0.9° or less, 0.8° or less, 0.7° or less, 0.6° or less, or 0.5° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more or more than 0°. By adjusting the maximum value of the first angle of the first internal electrode 121 to the above range, the entire first angle may satisfy the above range.

[0035] In an embodiment of the present invention, the sum of the first angles of the first internal electrodes 121 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may be 5° or less. The first internal electrodes 121 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may refer to the first internal electrodes 121 closest to the first surface S1 of the ceramic body and the first internal electrodes 121 closest to the second surface S2 of the ceramic body. The sum of the first angles of the first internal electrodes 121 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may be 5° or less, 4.5° or less, 4.0° or less, 3.5° or less, 3.0° or less, 2.5° or less, or 2.0° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more or more than 0°. When the sum of the first angles of the first internal electrodes 121 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 satisfies the above range, the entire first internal electrodes may form a uniform electric field.

[0036] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the absolute value of the horizontal angle of the second internal electrode 122 in the second direction with respect to the first surface S1 of the ceramic body 110 is defined as the second angle of the second internal electrode 122, the sum of the second angles may be less than 10°. The sum of the second angles of the second internal electrodes 122 may be a sum of the absolute values of the horizontal angles measured at the Y direction ends of the second internal electrodes with respect to the XY plane, and may be a sum of the horizontal angles measured at the points where the second internal electrodes and the margins meet with each other with respect to the XY plane. Referring to FIGS. 4 and 5, the sum of the horizontal angles (θ2, θ4, ..., θn, θ'1, θ'3, ..., θ'n-1) of the second internal electrodes 122 with respect to the XY plane may be expressed as θ2+θ4+...+θn+θ'1+θ'3+...+θ'n-1. The total of the second angles of the second internal electrodes 122 may be less than 10°, 9° or less, 8° or less, 7° or less, 6° or less, or 5° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more, more than 0°, 0.2° or more, 0.4° or more, 0.6° or more, 0.8° or more, or 1.0° or more. When the total of the second angles of the second internal electrodes satisfies the above range, better electric field characteristics can be ensured.

[0037] In one embodiment of the present invention, the maximum value of the second angle of the second internal electrode 122 may be 1° or less. The maximum value of the second angle may mean the maximum value among the absolute values of the second angles of all the second internal electrodes. The maximum value of the second angle may be 1.0° or less, 0.9° or less, 0.8° or less, 0.7° or less, 0.6° or less, or 0.5° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more, or more than 0°. By adjusting the maximum value of the second angle of the second internal electrode 122 to the above range, the entire second angle may satisfy the above range.

[0038] In an embodiment of the present invention, the sum of the second angles of the second internal electrodes 122 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may be 5° or less. The second internal electrodes 122 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may refer to the second internal electrodes 122 closest to the first surface S1 and the second internal electrodes 122 closest to the second surface S2 of the ceramic body. The sum of the second angles of the second internal electrodes 122 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may be 5° or less, 4.5° or less, 4.0° or less, 3.5° or less, 3.0° or less, 2.5° or less, or 2.0° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more or more than 0°. When the sum of the second angles of the second internal electrodes 122 disposed at the outermost positions in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 satisfies the above range, the entire second internal electrodes may form a uniform electric field.

[0039] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the absolute value of the horizontal angle of the first internal electrode 121 in the second direction with respect to the first surface S1 of the ceramic body 110 is defined as the first angle of the first internal electrode 121, and the absolute value of the horizontal angle of the second internal electrode 122 in the second direction with respect to the second angle of the second internal electrode 122, the sum of the first angle and the second angle may be less than 10°. Referring to FIG. 4 and FIG. 5, the sum of the first angle and the second angle of the first internal electrode 121 and the second internal electrode 122 with respect to the XY plane may be expressed as θ1+θ2+θ+...+θn+θ'1+θ'2+...+θ'n. The sum of the first angle and the second angle may be less than 10°, 9° or less, 8° or less, 7° or less, 6° or less, or 5° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, and may be, for example, 0° or more, more than 0°, 0.2° or more, 0.4° or more, 0.6° or more, 0.8° or more, or 1.0° or more. When the total of the first angle and the second angle satisfies the above range, better electric field characteristics can be ensured.

[0040] In an embodiment of the present invention, the sum of the first angle of the first internal electrode 121 and the second angle of the second internal electrode 122 disposed at the outermost side in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may be 5° or less. The first internal electrode 121 disposed at the outermost side in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may refer to the first internal electrode 121 closest to the first surface S1 and the first internal electrode 121 closest to the second surface S2 of the ceramic body, and the second internal electrode 122 disposed at the outermost side in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may refer to the second internal electrode 122 closest to the first surface S1 and the second internal electrode 122 closest to the second surface S2 of the ceramic body. The sum of the first angle of the first internal electrode 121 and the second angle of the second internal electrode 122 disposed at the outermost side in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 may be 5° or less, 4.5° or less, 4.0° or less, 3.5° or less, 3.0° or less, 2.5° or less, or 2.0° or less, and the lower limit is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0° or more or more than 0°. When the sum of the first angle of the first internal electrode 121 and the second angle of the second internal electrode 122 disposed at the outermost side in the third direction of the ceramic body 110 satisfies the above range, the entire internal electrodes may form a uniform electric field.

[0041] The method of satisfying the first angle and / or the second angle of the first internal electrode and / or the second internal electrode is not particularly limited. For example, a ceramic green sheet and a plurality of sheets coated with an internal electrode pattern may be laminated, and then cut with a laser cutter or the like to form the layer, or a dielectric layer and an internal electrode pattern may be laminated on a dry film pre-cut to a target size to form the layer, but is not limited thereto.

[0042] The material for forming the first and second internal electrodes 121, 122 is not particularly limited, and may be formed using a conductive paste containing at least one material selected from the group consisting of silver (Ag), gold (Au), platinum (Pt), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), tin (Sn), tungsten (W), palladium (Pd), titanium (Ti), and alloys thereof. The conductive paste may be printed using a screen printing method or a gravure printing method, but the present invention is not limited thereto.

[0043] The average thickness of the first and second internal electrodes may be 0.4 μm or less. The average thickness of the internal electrodes may be an average of values measured at five different positions of the fired internal electrodes. The lower limit of the average thickness of the first and second internal electrodes is not particularly limited, but may be, for example, 0.01 μm or more.

[0044] The multilayer ceramic capacitor according to an embodiment of the present invention may include a first external electrode 131 electrically connected to the first internal electrode 121 and a second external electrode 132 electrically connected to the second internal electrode 122.

[0045] The first and second external electrodes 131, 132 may be disposed in contact with the first and second internal electrodes 121, 122, respectively. The first and second external electrodes being in contact with the first and second internal electrodes, respectively, may mean that the first internal electrode is electrically connected to the first external electrode through a portion exposed to the outside of the body, and may mean that the second internal electrode is electrically connected to the second external electrode through a portion exposed to the outside of the body. The first and second external electrodes 131, 132 may be disposed extending to a portion of four faces in contact with the faces to which the first and second internal electrodes are exposed.

[0046] The method of forming the first and second external electrodes 131, 132 does not need to be particularly limited, and may be formed, for example, by dipping the body in a paste containing a conductive metal and glass, or by transferring a dried film obtained by drying a metal paste onto the fifth surface S5 and the sixth surface S6 of the ceramic body.

[0047] In one embodiment of the present invention, the first and second external electrodes 121, 122 may be made of one or more of silver (Ag), gold (Au), platinum (Pt), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), tin (Sn), tungsten (W), palladium (Pd), titanium (Ti), and alloys thereof. Also, a plating layer may be formed on the first and second external electrodes 131, 132 to improve mountability with a substrate.

[0048] FIG. 6 is a diagram showing the effect of an electric field on the angle of the internal electrodes of the multilayer ceramic capacitor according to the present invention. Referring to FIG. 6, it can be seen that the electric field strength applied to the internal electrodes increases as the angle of the internal electrodes increases. In particular, when the angle of the internal electrodes changes by 5°, the electric field strength 2 It can be confirmed that the increase is more than %.

[0049] Therefore, in the multilayer ceramic capacitor according to the present invention, the effect of the electric field applied to the internal electrodes can be kept constant by adjusting the angle of the internal electrodes within a predetermined range, and the breakdown voltage (BDV) can be improved by adjusting the electric field of each internal electrode within a certain range.

[0050] Although the embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and that various modifications and variations are possible within the scope of the technical idea of the present invention described in the claims.
