Abstract

A diffractive display element is provided, comprising a waveguide body, an input coupling region for diffracting and coupling light into the waveguide body, and an output coupling region for diffracting and coupling light out of the waveguide body, the light being configured to propagate along a primary route from the input coupling region to the output coupling region. According to the present invention, the element further comprises at least one grating mirror outside the primary route for diffracting and reflecting light that deviates from the primary route back to the primary route. This can increase the efficiency of waveguide-based personal displays.
