Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates to an adhesive composition. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a two-component solventless adhesive composition, an article comprising the same, and a method for producing the same. The two-component solventless adhesive composition provides improved performance, for example, in terms of one or more of adhesive strength, heat seal performance, and chemical resistance. [Background technology]

[0002] Adhesive compositions are useful for a wide variety of purposes. For example, adhesive compositions are used to bond substrates such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polyamide, metal, paper, or cellophane together to form composite films, i.e., laminates. The use of adhesives in various lamination end uses is generally known. For example, adhesives can be used in the manufacturing of film / film and film / foil laminates used in the packaging industry, particularly for food packaging. Adhesives used in lamination applications, i.e., "lamination adhesives," can be generally classified into three categories: solvent-based, water-based, and solvent-free. The performance of the adhesives varies from category to category and from application to application to which the adhesive is applied.

[0003] Solventless lamination adhesives can be applied without either organic solvents or water-based carriers. Because organic solvents or water do not need to be dried from the adhesive during application, these adhesives can run at high line speeds and are preferred in applications that require rapid adhesive applications. Solvent-based and water-based lamination adhesives are limited by the speed at which the solvent or water carrier can be effectively dried and removed during application. For environmental, health, and safety reasons, lamination adhesives are preferably water-based or solvent-free.

[0004] There are many types within the category of solventless laminating adhesives. One particular type is the two-component polyurethane-based laminating adhesive. Typically, two-component polyurethane-based laminating adhesives include a first component that includes an isocyanate-containing prepolymer and a second component that includes one or more polyols. The two components are combined and coated onto a film / foil substrate and then laminated to another film / foil substrate.

[0005] However, compared with conventional solvent-borne adhesives, laminates prepared from two-component solvent-free polyurethane laminating adhesives tend to exhibit poor adhesion strength to foil-based laminate structures, poor chemical and heat resistance, and may fail the boiling in bag (BIB) test using Morton's soup. Therefore, it is desirable to develop two-component solvent-free polyurethane laminating adhesives with improved performance in terms of, for example, one or more of adhesion strength, heat seal, and chemical resistance. EXAMPLES

[0092] Some embodiments of the present invention will now be described in the following examples, in which all parts and percentages are by weight unless otherwise specified. However, the scope of the present disclosure is of course not limited to the formulations shown in these examples.Rather, the examples simply relate to the invention of the present disclosure.

[0093] 1.Raw materials Information on the raw materials used in the examples is shown in Table 1 below: [Table 1] * Mor-free 698A was used as the NCO component in the solventless laminating adhesive of Comparative Example 2. ** As the OH component in the solventless laminating adhesive of Comparative Example 2, Mor-free C-83 was used.

[0094] 2. Synthesis Procedure Exemplary polyols having branched silane groups according to the present disclosure were synthesized according to the formulations listed in Table 2.

[0095] The raw materials JEFFSOL glycerin carbonate and A1100 were weighed according to the given formula and mixed carefully. The mixture was fed into a kettle and the glass reactor was placed in a water bath with a temperature of about 25°C. The mixture was then rotated. The temperature was controlled within a suitable range (particularly ambient temperature, generally 15°C to 35°C) and the kettle was purified with N2 during the entire process. 2 After 72 hours, a vacuum (20 mmHg) was applied for 40 minutes at a temperature of about 25° C. The product so obtained was placed in a 100 mL steel bottle protected with nitrogen. [Table 2]

[0096] The NCO and OH components of the inventive and comparative examples were prepared according to the formulations listed in Table 3.

[0097] NCO ingredients: The NCO component was synthesized in a 1000 mL glass reactor according to a conventional polyurethane prepolymer preparation process.

[0098] Isonate 50 OP was charged into the reactor and kept at 60°C under nitrogen protection, then polyol with or without GC10-3 as shown in Table 3 was charged into the reactor and mixed with MDI. The temperature was slowly increased to 80°C and held for 2-3 hours until the NCO content reached the theoretical value to produce the prepolymer. Finally, the prepolymer was charged into a well-sealed vessel under nitrogen protection for further application.

[0099] OH component: The OH component was prepared by mixing polyols with or without GC10-3 as shown in Table 3. The moisture content of all the raw materials was controlled below 500 ppm before the raw materials were charged. Nitrogen was required during the whole mixing process to avoid moisture contamination. [Table 3]

[0100] Coating and Lamination Process: The coating and lamination process was carried out on an SDC Labo-Combi 400 machine. The nip temperature was maintained at 40°C during the entire lamination process at a speed of 100 m / min. The coating weight was 1.8-2.0 g / m 2 The laminated film was then cured at room temperature (23-25°C) or in an oven before testing.

[0101] 3. Sample Preparation Samples were prepared according to the formulations shown in Table 4. The NCO / OH molar ratio of the samples was maintained at a level between 1.0 and 1.8. [Table 4]

[0102] 4. Testing method: T-type peel (90°) adhesive strength (T-type peel assisted by hand) After curing, the laminated films were cut into 15 mm wide strips for T-peel testing on an Instron 5943 machine at a crosshead speed of 250 mm / min. Three strips were tested and an average value was obtained. During the test, the tails of the strips were pulled slightly with a finger to ensure that they remained at 90° to the peel direction.

[0103] Heat Seal Strength: The laminates were heat sealed in an HSG-C Heat-Sealing Machine available from Brugger Company at a sealing temperature of 140°C and a pressure of 300N for 1 second, then cooled and cut into 15mm wide strips for heat seal strength testing using a 5940 Series Single Columnmn Table Top System available from Instron Corporation under a crosshead speed of 250mm / min. Three strips of each sample were tested and the average value was calculated. Results were reported in N / 15mm.

[0104] Chemical resistance (boil-in bag filled with Morton's soup): The cured laminated film was cut to a size of 8×12 inches, then folded and heat sealed at the bottom and sides of the larger rectangle under 140° C. and 300 N / 15 mm for 1 second. The pouch was then filled 2 / 3 full with Morton Soup, and the top of the pouch was carefully sealed to minimize air entrapment. Morton Soup typically contains a mixture of soybean oil, ketchup, and vinegar in a 1:1:1 mix ratio. Water was prevented from getting into the heat-sealed area to avoid compromising the heat seal. Any pre-existing noticeable defects in the heat-sealed or laminated areas were marked with an indelible marker. The pouch was then carefully placed in boiling water and held there for 30 minutes. Ensure that the pouch is always submerged in water during the entire boiling process. Once complete, the extent of tunneling, delamination, and / or leakage was recorded in comparison to existing defects. Samples that showed no evidence of tunneling, delamination, or leakage beyond any pre-existing heat seal or stacking faults were recorded as "passes." The pouches were opened, emptied, cooled, and then cut into 15 mm wide strips and tested for their T-peel bond strength and heat seal strength in an Instron 5943 machine.

[0105] 5.Performance Evaluation The bond strength (BS), heat seal strength (HS), and BiB properties are summarized in Table 5. The results show that the inclusion of the silane-containing polyol GC10-3 can significantly improve the bond strength to foil, chemical resistance (good heat seal without tunneling after boil-in-bag test with Morton's soup), and hydrolytic stability of the two-component solvent-free adhesive.
