Description

[Technical field]

[0001] One exemplary embodiment generally relates to a collapsible container. [Background technology]

[0002] Disposable cups are widely used throughout the food service industry, from fast food restaurants to school cafeterias. Such cups are made of paper or plastic materials configured to contain either hot or cold beverages. Conventional disposable cups are configured to receive a separate plastic lid that fits over the top of the cup by snapping into place over a rolled up rim. The lid may be configured with a hole, e.g., a coffee cup lid hole, for direct drinking, or a hole, e.g., a soda fountain cup lid hole, for receiving a separate straw. Food service establishments often have separate equipment to separately store disposable cups, lids, and straws for dispensing and assembling to employees or end users. Additionally, food service establishments utilize conventional non-watertight paper containers for food products. Conventional plastic containers, or plastic lids with paper containers, are utilized to contain leaky food products. Summary of the Invention

[0003] The embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a cup with an integrated folding lid. The inventors have identified problems associated with conventional disposable cups and propose an integrated lid and cup to overcome these identified problems. Conventional disposable cups require at least a separate plastic lid that snaps over the opening of a conventional cup by gripping the rolled up edge of the cup with tabs configured around a mating surface on the lid. These tabs may not fit the cup precisely, creating a loose lid-to-cup interface leading to leaks or spills. Another problem associated with conventional disposable cup lids is that they can crack or break when a user attempts to remove the lid. For example, when a user removes the lid to refill the cup or to add ice, the lid can tear, bend, or otherwise break, requiring a new lid. In view of the present disclosure, it will be appreciated that such conventional plastic disposable lids unnecessarily increase trash production and waste. Furthermore, when the disposable cup contains a hot beverage, a loose or broken lid can cause injury, for example, burns to the skin when the user attempts to drink from the lid. Traditional disposable cups, lids, and straws also create additional logistical burdens for foodservice businesses and their wholesalers. For example, traditional disposable cups, lids, and straws are often produced in separate facilities and must be shipped separately to distributors or directly to restaurants. Additionally, restaurants must allocate additional employee time to separately inventory and track the quantities of cups, lids, and straws for each cup size served.

[0004] The same aforementioned limitations also pertain to conventional take-out food containers, which suffer from further limitations. For example, conventional take-out food containers are either folding paper types, which are not watertight due to the folded bottom, or cup and lid combinations (e.g., paper and / or plastic soup or beverage cup and lid combinations). Furthermore, folding paper type conventional take-out food containers (e.g., Chinese food take-out containers, etc.) are often limited to only square or rectangular cross-sectional geometries and are not suitable for cup holders, etc. (e.g., insulated sleeves, koozies, etc.). In addition, such conventional folding paper type containers are not assembled and stackable for easy access by consumers. For example, traditional soda fountain cups are often stacked next to the soda fountain (e.g., a series of cups are inserted on top of each other) for consumers or food service employees to easily access the cups and fill them at the soda fountain. Traditional folding paper type containers tend to collapse when not filled, and therefore cannot be easily stacked on top of each other without binding and tearing when a consumer or food service employee goes to separate the traditional folding paper type containers. Thus, traditional folding paper type containers create additional time and manpower burdens for food service establishments, since the traditional folding paper type containers must be assembled for each order. Furthermore, when a food order includes multiple food types, a combination of traditional folding paper type and traditional cup and lid containers must be used (e.g., an order including rice and soup). In view of the present disclosure, it will be appreciated that food service establishments must commit additional resources to store, assemble, track, and sort multiple traditional container types.

[0005] The present disclosure proposes to solve at least the aforementioned problems associated with conventional folding paper-type containers and conventional cup and lid containers by providing a cup with a one-piece lid, which in some embodiments may be configured such that a portion of the lid is configured to allow liquid to be consumed therethrough, further eliminating the need for a separate straw.

[0006] An exemplary embodiment includes a smart one-piece cup with an integral lid that is assembled by folding a continuous piece of material, such as paper, that is cut into a preconfigured shape (i.e., blank). In such an embodiment, the smart one-piece cup comprises one or more of a base, a sidewall, an integral lid section, tabs and slits, creases, or adhesive. In some embodiments, the base may be a separate piece of material attached to the bottom of the sidewall, for example, by an adhesive (e.g., epoxy, etc.). In some embodiments, the base may comprise the same material as the sidewall and integral lid components of the smart one-piece cup. In some embodiments, the one-piece lid cup may be at least partially assembled before reaching the end user (i.e., consumer). For example, the cup may be shipped to a restaurant with the base and sidewall folded together and attached by adhesive to maintain a substantially recognizable cup shape with an open top. In such an embodiment, the integral lid section may extend upward from at least an upper portion of the sidewall, with one or more creases configured in a transition area between the sidewall and the integral lid section. The one or more folds are configured to provide for folding of the integral lid section over the opening of the cup to form a substantial cover (i.e., a lid) over the opening of the cup without the need for a separate lid component. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the integral lid may form a hole configured for drinking. In such embodiments, at least a portion of the integral lid may protrude to define a spout configured to receive a straw, for direct drinking, or for pouring the contents of the cup.

[0007] In some embodiments, the continuous piece of material used to create the smart one-piece cup blank may include one or more materials, including, but not limited to, paper, plastic, foam, fabric, and the like, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the one or more materials may be at least partially treated with a sealant to block absorption of fluid into the material, thereby preventing leakage from the smart one-piece cup. In some embodiments, only the inside of the sidewall and base of the cup may be treated with the sealant. In other embodiments, all exposed surfaces of the smart one-piece cup may be treated with the sealant. In still other embodiments, no sealant may be utilized. The sealant may include, but is not limited to, one or more of natural coatings, synthetic coatings, plastic-free coatings, polylactic acid (PLA), waxes (e.g., paraffin wax, beeswax, and the like), resins, epoxies, petroleum-based coatings (e.g., polyethylene, and the like), and the like, or combinations thereof. It will be appreciated that in some embodiments, the plastic-free coating may be applied such that the beverage is fully contained without penetration for up to six hours. In some embodiments, the paper material used to manufacture the enhanced one-piece cup blank may include a single piece of paper, multiple pieces of paper attached to one another (e.g., by adhesives, lamination processes, etc.), one or more carboard sheets, or the like, or a combination thereof. For example, in one example, the enhanced one-piece cup is intended for cold beverage products (e.g., iced tea) and the material may include a single piece of paper coated with PLA to prevent liquid absorption into the paper material. In an alternative example, where the enhanced one-piece cup is intended for hot beverage products (e.g., coffee), the material may include corrugated board treated with a wax coating. In some embodiments, the corrugated board material may be configured with one or more channels between at least two surfaces, and the space within the channels may be configured to insulate the sidewalls of the enhanced one-piece cup.In view of the present disclosure, it will be appreciated that wax and PLA based sealants may be utilized to improve the biodegradability of the enhanced one-piece cup.

[0008] In other embodiments, the plastic material used to produce the smart one-piece cup blank may include one or more sheets of thermoplastics, thermosets, polyethylene terephthalate (PETE), high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), silicone, polylactic acid (PLA), and the like, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the smart one-piece cup may be repeatedly washed and reused by the consumer. For example, the smart one-piece cup may be produced by injection molding utilizing a silicone material, and the like. In such exemplary embodiments, the smart one-piece cup's integral lid may be repeatedly opened and closed without substantial deterioration accumulating along the one or more folds. In view of the present disclosure, it will be understood that in at least such plastic embodiments, the one or more folds are configured to function as a living hinge configured for multiple reuse. In some embodiments, the plastic material may be configured with one or more channels between at least two surfaces, and the space within the channel may be configured to insulate the sidewalls of the smart one-piece cup.

[0009] In view of the present disclosure, it will be understood that materials may be selected and / or configured based on one or more of their physical properties, including, but not limited to, color, thermal properties, chemical resistance, and the like, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the thickness of the material may be increased or decreased to proportionately increase or decrease heat transfer through the material. For example, the thickness of the material may be increased to insulate the enhanced integral cup from heat transfer through the material. In some embodiments, the enhanced integral cup blank may have one or more thicknesses. For example, the sidewall portion of the blank may be configured with a first thickness, while the integral lid section may have a second thickness and the base section may have a third thickness.

[0010] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a one-piece folding lid cup is provided. In an embodiment, the one-piece folding lid cup may include a body including one or more materials. The body may include one or more folds, and when the body, or a portion thereof, is bent along the one or more folds, the body may include a center portion, a circular bottom portion, a top portion, and / or a plurality of integral lid sections. In an embodiment, the center portion may define a sidewall. The sidewall may be configured as a single continuous surface that is looped on itself to define, for example, one or more circular cross sections. The sidewall may be configured to extend between a first end and a second end, and the first end of the sidewall may be attached to the second end of the sidewall by, for example, mechanical and / or chemical means. In an embodiment, the circular bottom portion extends from the center portion that defines a base.

[0011] The circular bottom may be configured to extend in a first direction from the sidewall and may be attached to the bottom edge. In an embodiment, the top may define an opening configured to allow access to at least one or more cavities defined by the central portion. In an embodiment, the plurality of integral lid sections extend from a top of the cup. Individual sections of the plurality of integral lid sections may be separated from the top by respective folds. The plurality of integral lid sections may include at least one integral lid section that may define at least a tab and at least one integral lid section that defines at least a slit. In an embodiment, the slit may be configured to receive the tab through the slit. In an embodiment, the plurality of integral lid sections may be configured to interlock with at least the tab being received in the slit. The interlocked plurality of integral lid sections may define a lid cover that may be configured to at least partially cover the opening.

[0012] In some embodiments, the sidewall and base define a watertight retaining cavity at least partially surrounded by the body. In some embodiments, the sidewall, base, and one or more dividers attached to the sidewall and / or base define a plurality of watertight retaining cavities at least partially surrounded by the body. In some embodiments, the one or more dividers may be attached to the sidewall and / or base by one or more mechanical and / or chemical means. In some embodiments, the mechanical attachment means may include one or more of a lap seam, a countersunk lap seam, an outer lap seam, a standing seam, a flatlock seam, a grooved flatlock seam, a lap bottom seam, an insert bottom seam, a single bottom seam, a crimp, or the like, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the chemical attachment means may include one or more of a reactive adhesive, a non-reactive adhesive, a natural adhesive, a synthetic adhesive, a polyurethane resin, a thermosetting epoxy, a cyanoacrylate, a pressure sensitive adhesive, or the like, or a combination thereof.

[0013] In some embodiments, the one or more dividers may include one or more materials (e.g., paper, cardboard, sealant, etc.) that are the same as the body of the cup. In some embodiments, the one or more dividers may include one or more materials (e.g., paper, cardboard, sealant, etc.) that are different from the body of the cup. For example, the body of the cup may include a cardboard material with a wax-based sealant coating, and the one or more dividers may include a single sheet of a paper material with a polylactic acid-based sealant. In some embodiments, the one or more dividers may divide the watertight retaining cavity into a plurality of watertight retaining cavities that define a series of concentric circles. In some embodiments, the one or more dividers may divide the watertight retaining cavity into a plurality of watertight retaining cavities that define a series of polygons (e.g., semicircular, square, rectangular, semicircular, etc., or combinations thereof).

[0014] In view of the present disclosure, it will be understood that one or more dividers defining multiple watertight holding cavities may be used to separate multiple contents of the cup. For example, the cup may be divided into two watertight holding cavities, each cavity accessible through at least a respective spout configured to receive at least a straw, and each cavity may be at least partially filled with a different beverage (e.g., cola, ginger ale, water, etc.). In an additional example, a first cavity may hold a beverage while a second cavity may hold ice (e.g., in a circular concentric configuration such that the beverage is in the outer cavity while the ice is in the inner cavity). In view of the present disclosure, it will be understood that by separating the beverage and the ice, the beverage will not be diluted as the ice melts over time, improving upon conventional beverage and / or food containers. In some embodiments, the spout may be configured to pour the liquid from the cup. For example, embodiments of the present disclosure may be configured as disposable restaurant silverware, such as milk jugs or water pitchers, that are replaced for sanitation purposes when the table is cleaned and prepared for the next customer.

[0015] In some embodiments, the top opening is configured to receive at least a liquid substance and / or a solid substance held within the watertight retaining cavity through the opening, hi some embodiments, the top opening is configured to receive one or more of a beverage, food, or the like, or a combination held within the watertight retaining cavity through the opening.

[0016] In some embodiments, the interlocked one-piece lid sections define a spout extending from and protruding through the lid cover, the spout configured to convey at least liquid retained in the watertight retaining cavity through the spout. In some embodiments, the spout defines a drinking opening, the drinking opening may be configured to receive one or more of a straw, a stirrer, or a utensil (e.g., spoon, fork, etc.). In some embodiments, the spout is positioned at a junction between the interlocked one-piece lid sections and the sidewall. In some embodiments, the spout is positioned to extend perpendicular to a surface defined by the interlocked one-piece lid sections. In some embodiments, the spout is a spout that may be configured to access contents retained in one or more watertight retaining cavities. In some embodiments, the spout defines one or more of an oval cross-section, a circular cross-section, a rectangular cross-section, a square cross-section, a frusto-conical shape, a conical shape, a cylindrical shape, or a parabolic shape.

[0017] In some embodiments, the spout may include a cone or similar shape without an opening. In such embodiments, the spout may further comprise one or more folds (e.g., one or more circumferential rings around an outer surface of the spout) that define a circumference around one or more surfaces of the spout. In such embodiments, the one or more folds that define a circumference around one or more surfaces of the spout may be configured to bend, fold, and / or tear to form an opening in the spout. For example, a cone-shaped spout may be configured with perforations midway between the tip and base of the cone shape that may be torn to allow a consumer to drink from the cup. In some examples, the perforations define only a partial length around the circumference of the cone shape, and the tip of the cone-shaped spout may be folded over to provide access to the opening in the spout. In view of the present disclosure, it will be appreciated that in such an embodiment, the cup may be filled by a fast food employee or the like, and the spout may then be later opened by the consumer, thus reducing the risk of intentional or unintentional contamination (e.g., airborne viruses, bacteria, etc.) In practice, this represents an improvement over conventional cup, lid, and straw systems, where the straw is either opened and placed in the cup by the fast food employee, or is sealed and remains separate from the cup.

[0018] In some embodiments, the first end of the sidewall is attached to the second end of the sidewall by adhesive or the like. In some embodiments, the first end of the sidewall is attached to the second end of the sidewall by one or more mechanical and / or chemical means. In some embodiments, the chemical attachment means may include one or more of a reactive adhesive, a non-reactive adhesive, a natural adhesive, a synthetic adhesive, a polyurethane resin, a thermosetting epoxy, a cyanoacrylate, a pressure sensitive adhesive (e.g., a tape, or the like), or the like, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the first end of the sidewall is attached to the second end of the sidewall by a first portion of the first end of the sidewall overlapping a second portion of the second end of the sidewall. In some embodiments, the first end of the sidewall is attached to the second end of the sidewall by abutting a first edge of the first end of the sidewall to a second edge of the second end of the sidewall. In some embodiments, a strip of one or more materials (e.g., paper, wax sealant, an additional sealant layer, etc., or combinations thereof) can be configured to at least partially cover a seam defined by the attachment of the first end of the sidewall to the second end of the sidewall.

[0019] In some embodiments, the base is attached to a bottom edge associated with the third end of the sidewall by an adhesive or the like (e.g., one or more mechanical and / or chemical means). In some embodiments, the base defines one or more of an oval cross-section, a circular cross-section, a rectangular cross-section, a square cross-section, a frusto-conical shape, a cone shape, a cylindrical shape, a parabolic shape, or the like, or combinations thereof.

[0020] In some embodiments, the one or more folds include one or more of a perforation line, a crease line, a raised line, a solid score line, or a dashed score line. In some embodiments, the one or more folds may include one or more strings of material (e.g., fabric, paper, aluminum, etc., or combinations thereof) embedded in one or more portions of the cup (e.g., top, spout, sidewall, etc.). In such embodiments, the strings are configured to be pulled (e.g., by ends projecting outwardly from one or more portions of the cup), and when the strings are pulled, the strings are further configured to at least partially tear a line through one or more portions of the cup. For example, interlocked multiple one-piece lid sections may be at least partially torn open by a string embedded in an exterior surface of the interlocked multiple one-piece lid sections, thereby forming a spout at a joint between the interlocked multiple one-piece lid sections and the sidewall.

[0021] In some embodiments, the plurality of integral lid sections extend upward from the sidewall on the fourth end as one or more continuous extensions of the sidewall. In some embodiments, the at least one tab extends upward from a first integral lid section of the plurality of integral lid sections, and the at least one slit comprises a cutout in a second integral lid section of the plurality of integral lid sections. In some embodiments, the one or more materials comprise one or more of a paper, a plastic, a metal, or a woven material. In some embodiments, the one or more materials are at least partially coated with a sealant. In some embodiments, the sealant comprises one or more of a polylactic acid, a wax, a resin, or the like, or a combination thereof.

[0022] In some embodiments, one or more portions of the cup (e.g., sidewall, integral lid sections, base, etc.) comprise insulation. In some embodiments, the insulation comprises multiple layers of one or more materials, the multiple layers of one or more materials being configured with at least a space between the multiple layers of one or more materials. In some embodiments, the insulation comprises insulating materials including one or more of polystyrene insulation, synthetic fibers, natural fibers (e.g., cotton, etc.), cork, corrugated materials (e.g., paper, cardboard, fiberboard, etc.), air, etc., or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the space between the multiple layers of one or more materials is filled with one or more of air, foam, plastic, vacuum, etc., or combinations thereof. In view of the present disclosure, it will be appreciated that refrigeration systems for cooling beverages or producing ice are energy intensive, and thus, by configuring the cup with one or more insulating methods, the need for additional ice / cooling is reduced, thus reducing overall energy consumption.

[0023] In some embodiments, a portion of the cup may include a graphical design print, including but not limited to one or more of the center, bottom, or top. In some embodiments, the graphical design print includes one or more of an image, a logo, text, numbers, geometric shapes, other aesthetic features (e.g., color, etc.), etc., or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the graphical design print includes one or more of an ink, a scorched or burned portion of material (e.g., by a laser engraver, etc.), a plastic overlay (e.g., a vinyl sticker, polylactic acid attached to an underlying material, etc.), etc., or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the graphical design print indicates the location of one or more creases along the body. In some embodiments, the graphical design print indicates the direction and / or sequence of folding the multiple integrated lid sections. In some embodiments, at least the center defines one or more of a frusto-conical, conical, cylindrical, or parabolic shape.

[0024] In some embodiments, at least the central portion defines one or more diameters perpendicular to at least an outer surface of the sidewall, the one or more diameters being configured to fit a plurality of cup holders. In some embodiments, at least the central portion is configured to have a graduated profile defined by a series of decreasing outer wall diameters. For example, a lower half of the central portion may define a first diameter and an upper half of the central portion may define a second diameter, the first diameter being less than the second diameter. In some embodiments, one or more of the sidewall diameters may be configured to fit one or more different types of cup holders, cup sleeves, cup coozies, etc., or combinations thereof.

[0025] In some embodiments, the spout may be configured with an integral straw (e.g., a paper or plastic straw mechanically or chemically attached to one or more individual sections of the plurality of integral lid sections). In some embodiments, the integral straw may be configured by folding one or more individual sections of the plurality of integral lid sections. In some embodiments, the integral straw may be configured as part of the sidewall, the base, and one or more dividers attached to the sidewall and / or the base. For example, a circular divider attached (e.g., by mechanical or chemical means) to the sidewall may extend from the top of the cup (e.g., a predetermined distance above the plurality of integral lid sections through the spout), down the sidewall, to a predetermined distance above the base of the cup. In view of the present disclosure, it will be appreciated that the integral straw negates the need for a separate supply of individually packaged straws in a food service establishment, thus reducing the operational costs of the establishment while reducing the environmental impact from additional straws and straw bags (e.g., plastic straws in paper or plastic sanitary sleeves).

[0026] In some embodiments, the one or more folding handles may be configured to be attached to an exterior surface of the sidewall via mechanical and / or chemical means. For example, a pair of folding integral handles may be at least partially adhered to the exterior of the sidewall and configured to be bent away from the sidewall along one or more creases to generate at least one handle for carrying or gripping the cup by hand. In some embodiments, the sidewall may be configured with one or more protruding tabs and secured to the exterior of the sidewall via mechanical and / or chemical means and configured with one or more slits for receiving one or more tabs associated with the one or more carrying handles. In such embodiments, the one or more carrying handles may include one or more materials and may be attached by a first end of the carrying handle to the sidewall or the like (e.g., one or more integral lid sections of the plurality of integral lid sections), and a second end of the carrying handle may be configured to have a tab for mating with one or more protruding tabs including slits or the like (e.g., one or more integral lid sections of the plurality of integral lid sections).

[0027] In some embodiments, the handle, carrying handle, etc., or combinations thereof, may be configured with a pressure sensitive adhesive configured to attach to one or more portions of the cup. For example, the carrying handle may be configured with a first piece of pressure sensitive adhesive (e.g., tape, etc.) at a first end and a second piece of pressure sensitive adhesive at a second end, and may be attached to the sidewall or integral lid of the cup by a food service employee or a consumer. In view of the present disclosure, it will be understood that some exemplary handles, etc., configured with pressure sensitive adhesive may be separate from some embodiments of the cup (e.g., optional peripheral features that may or may not be utilized by the consumer) and may be attached to the cup during initial assembly of the cup. In some embodiments, one or more handles may be integrated into a plurality of integral lid sections, extending from a first integral lid section and folding by mating with a second integral lid section (e.g., via a tab and slit configuration, etc.) to define a handle.
