A method for depleting or removing endotoxin from a known or suspected endotoxin-containing source by solid phase extraction material in an essentially aqueous system, comprising: providing a supply known to contain endotoxins or suspected to contain endotoxins; contacting the feed, known to contain endotoxin or suspected to contain endotoxin, with a positively charged solid phase material having a surface onto which ferric iron is immobilized, wherein the solid phase extraction material immobilizes the ferric iron via a (2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN) ligand; incubating the feed, known to contain endotoxin or suspected to contain endotoxin, for a time sufficient to allow endotoxin to bind to the porous solid phase material; separating the solid phase material from the essentially aqueous system; The method may optionally include the step of isolating said aqueous system that has been rendered free or depleted of endotoxins.
