Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of metallurgy, in particular to the continuous casting of metals, and may be used to produce continuously cast ingots of metals, including aluminum and its alloys. [Background technology]

[0002] A cooling device for use in wheel-belt type continuous casting plants is known (IT1126618, 21 May 1986). The cooling device comprises a ring provided with holders of nozzles for spraying a coolant. The ring is mounted on the casting wheel to effect cooling of the ingots during casting and can be removed during maintenance. A disadvantage of this device is the non-uniform cooling of the ingots, which leads to segregation of impurities, cracks, surface roughness and brittleness during metal solidification. In addition, the known device provides an insufficient cooling rate, which leads to a reduction in production capacity.

[0003] An apparatus for high speed continuous casting is known (US Pat. No. 3,774,669, 27 November 1973). The known apparatus is a mould which includes nozzles for spraying a coolant on the outside of the casting wheel, enhancing the process of secondary cooling of the cast ingot. A disadvantage of this apparatus is the uneven cooling of the ingot, which leads to the formation of defects in the form of shrinkage holes, mainly in the centre of the cast ingot.

[0004] Another known device intended for the production of aluminum and copper ingots is the mould proposed in RU 2623559, 27 June 2017. This known mould is characterized in that the calibre of a trapezoid shape in the radial section of the casting wheel of the rotary caster comprises a hollow made in the shape of an isosceles triangle, in which the angle at the apex of this triangle and the angle formed by the sides of the triangle and the sides of the trapezoid are equal to each other and amount to 123°...130°. The advantage of this device is the reduction of the heat-affected zone, which reduces the likelihood of cracking and destruction of the surface of the mould and increases its service life. Among the disadvantages of the proposed mould design, it is necessary to highlight the need to carry out additional work of adjusting the shape of the cast ingot obtained using the known device.

[0005] A cooling system for a continuous casting plant is known (US Pat. No. 4,957,155, 18 September 1990). In the known plant, directional solidification is performed by the presence of an insulating layer on the casting wheel belt, while some coolant is fed into the grooves of the casting wheel through pilot holes to improve cooling. All external sprinklers together provide a directed and focused solidification of the ingot from top to bottom, creating a maximum heat transfer difference. As a result of the use of the known cooling system in the plant, the obtained ingots are formed with a minimum number of casting defects. A drawback of this technical solution is that the implementation of the cooling system at relatively low production capacities is difficult due to the longer time required for the solidification of the ingot.

[0006] The closest analogue of the claimed invention is a cooling device in a continuous casting plant (US 3,800,852, 4 February 1974). The known cooling device includes an internal sprinkler nozzle row for cooling the casting wheel and an external sprinkler nozzle row for cooling the belt. At the same time, only the nozzles of the external sprinkler are provided with a coolant flow control. The drawbacks of this device are the inefficient control of the coolant flow, which leads to the formation of defects in the ingot (cracks, surface roughness), as well as an insufficient cooling rate, which leads to a reduction in production capacity. Summary of the Invention

[0007] The technical problem of the claimed invention is to ensure uniform and controlled cooling of the inner, outer and lateral surfaces of the casting wheel in order to obtain high quality continuously cast ingots.

[0008] The technical result of the claimed invention is to increase the manufacturability of continuous cast ingots, to increase their production rate and to improve their quality by eliminating the formation of solidification defects, i.e. to obtain a continuous cast ingot essentially free of cracks, voids, etc.

[0009] The technical result of the invention as defined in the claims is achieved by the proposed continuous casting mould.

[0010] According to the invention, a continuous casting mold includes a casting wheel having an open groove formed on its outer surface, the open groove having an isosceles trapezoidal cross section (i.e., a trapezoidal cross section), and a continuous belt (i.e., an infinitely long belt) adjacent the casting wheel with its outer surface so as to close the predetermined open groove, and also includes a cooling system.

[0011] The ratio of the length of the larger base side of the trapezoidal cross section of the open groove of the casting wheel to the length of the smaller base side of the trapezoidal cross section is in the range of 1.3 to 1.6.

[0012] The cooling system is made with the possibility of allowing adjustable supply of coolant to the casting wheel and the continuous belt on at least four sides, i.e. the outer side, the inner side and both side sides of the wheel, with a ratio of the coolant flow on the inner side of the wheel to the coolant flow on the outer side of the wheel of 1.9-3.0 and a ratio of the total coolant flow rate on the side sides of the casting wheel to the coolant flow rate on the inner side of the casting wheel of 1.3-1.7.

[0013] Such a cooling system can provide primary cooling, i.e., cooling of the continuously cast ingot while the metal is solidifying, with the periphery of the ingot cooling faster than its center, and secondary cooling of the continuously cast ingot, i.e., cooling of the solidified metal. It has been experimentally established that the difference in cooling rate between any central portion and any peripheral portion of the ingot is not to exceed 1.5 times.

[0014] The cooling system may include at least four arcuate tubular sprinklers located along the exterior, interior and side surfaces of the casting wheel and configured to allow adjustable delivery of coolant to the corresponding surfaces of the casting wheel and belt, i.e. an external sprinkler located on an outer side of the casting wheel and the continuous belt for supplying a coolant thereto; an internal sprinkler located on an interior side of the casting wheel for supplying coolant thereto; Right and left sprinklers are located on the right and left sides, respectively, of the casting wheel and are used to supply coolant thereto.

[0015] A controlled supply of coolant may be provided through nozzles distributed along the length of each sprinkler.

[0016] Control of the coolant flow may be achieved by controlling the shutoff valves and corresponding flow control nozzles.

[0017] The tubular sprinklers may be divided into separate zones utilizing internal cross dividers to ensure independent and adjustable supply of coolant to each zone.

[0018] Each of said independent zones may be provided with individual control of the coolant supply ensuring a regulated coolant supply to said zone. Thus, the cooling control system may be configured individually for each independent zone.

[0019] Supply of coolant from the sprinklers to the casting wheel and belt may be through flat-flame nozzles with individual coolant flow control units.

[0020] Usually water is used as the coolant, but it is also possible to use other liquids suitable for this purpose, for example ethylene glycol, which is used for special alloys such as aluminium-lithium alloys.

[0021] According to another aspect, the invention relates to a method for cooling a continuous cast ingot using the proposed mold, which comprises the supply of coolant to the mold casting wheel and the continuous belt on at least four sides, namely the outer side, the inner side and both lateral sides of the wheel, controlling the coolant flow according to the following ratios: The ratio of the flow rate on the inner surface of the casting wheel to the flow rate on the outer surface of the wheel is in the range of 1.9 to 3.0; The ratio of the total coolant flow rate on the lateral side of the casting wheel to the coolant flow rate on the inner side of the casting wheel is in the range of 1.3 to 1.7.

[0022] Coolant supply may be through at least four arcuate tubular sprinklers located along the exterior, interior and sides of the casting wheel and made to allow adjustable coolant supply, i.e. an external sprinkler located on an outer side of the casting wheel and the continuous belt for supplying a coolant thereto; an internal sprinkler located on an interior side of the casting wheel for supplying coolant thereto; Right and left sprinklers are located on the right and left sides, respectively, of the casting wheel and are used to supply coolant thereto.

[0023] Coolant may be delivered through nozzles distributed along the length of each sprinkler.

[0024] Control of the coolant flow may be achieved by controlling the shutoff valves and corresponding flow control nozzles.

[0025] The tubular sprinklers may be divided into separate zones utilizing internal cross dividers to ensure independent and adjustable supply of coolant to each zone.

[0026] Each of said independent zones may be provided with individual control of the coolant supply ensuring a regulated coolant supply to said zone. Thus, the cooling control system may be configured individually for each independent zone.

[0027] Coolant supply from the sprinklers to the casting wheel and belt may be through flat frame nozzles with individual coolant flow control units.

[0028] According to one of the embodiments of the invention, the device and method are intended for the production of a continuous cast ingot from an aluminum-based alloy containing at least one alloying element selected from the group of iron, silicon, magnesium, zirconium, scandium, manganese, titanium, copper, nickel and chromium, while the structure of the cast ingot is an aluminum matrix with eutectic-derived grains distributed therein.

[0029] The justification for the claimed mold parameters, which ensure the achievement of the technical result of increasing the manufacturability of continuous cast ingots, improving their quality, as well as increasing the production capacity of the mold (by increasing the ingot production rate), is presented below.

[0030] The ratio of the length of the larger base side of the trapezoidal cross section of the open groove of the casting wheel to the length of the smaller base side of the trapezoidal cross section should be in the range of 1.3 to 1.6.

[0031] If the ratio of the predetermined length of the larger base side of the cross section to the predetermined length of the smaller base side of the cross section exceeds 1.6, the resulting continuously cast ingot will have a shape that is significantly different from the square shape preferred in terms of further processing the ingot into a product, requiring additional work to calibrate the ingot, which will adversely affect the manufacturability of the ingot.

[0032] If the ratio of the given length of the larger base of the cross section to the given length of the smaller base of the cross section is less than 1.3, when casting an alloy with low linear shrinkage, cold cracks may occur due to the difficulty in removing the ingot from the open groove of the casting wheel, resulting in poor quality of the ingot.

[0033] The ratio of the coolant flow from the internal sprinkler (i.e., the smaller base side of the cross section of the opening groove of the casting wheel) to the external sprinkler (the larger base side of the cross section) should be in the range of 1.9 to 3.0.

[0034] When adjusting the sprinkler coolant flow, if the specified ratio is less than 1.9 or more than 3.0, the crystallisation sump will be shifted closer to the larger and smaller bases of the trapezoid respectively, which will lead to uneven cooling and crack formation in the ingot, i.e., poor quality of the ingot.

[0035] To produce a high quality internal structure of the cast ingot on different parts of the cooling surface of the mold casting wheel, different cooling intensities are required, which depend on the alloy and the production capacity of the mold.

[0036] To ensure these conditions, coolant may be supplied to the casting wheel and belt through arc-shaped tubular sprinklers located along the exterior, interior, and sides of the casting wheel and separated by internal cross partitions to ensure adjustable supply of coolant to independent zones.

[0037] Each of said independent zones may be provided with individual control of the coolant supply ensuring a regulated coolant supply to said zone. Thus, the cooling control system may be configured individually for each independent zone.

[0038] The coolant may be delivered through flat frame nozzles with individual coolant flow control units.

[0039] For more precise individual adjustment of the coolant flow, a control unit with a needle valve can be installed upstream of each nozzle.

[0040] The essence of the invention is illustrated by means of pictorial material. [Brief description of the drawings]

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0042] Below are examples of specific embodiments of the present invention.

[0043] Example 1 Justification of the selection of the geometric dimensions of the cross section of the opening groove of a casting wheel forming a continuously cast ingot of the shape of an isosceles trapezoid using the Procast software package.

[0044] The objective of this embodiment is to select a ratio of base lengths of the trapezoidal (i.e. trapezoid-shaped) cross section of the open groove of the casting wheel that ensures uniform solidification of the metal in the continuously cast ingot.

[0045] As criteria for solidification uniformity at high production capacity of at least 2 t / h of casting, the following parameters were used: - the presence or absence of internal tensile stress vectors, mainly at the corners of the larger base of the trapezoid; - the depth of the sump of the solidifying melt, its value controls the presence or absence of central shrinkage porosity; - There must be no significant thermal gradient within the solidification interval.

[0046] In the presence of multiple directional vectors of tensile stress, there is a high probability of fracture (or cracking) of the ingot during solidification.

[0047] For deep sumps, the formation of centreline shrinkage porosity is likely due to changes in thermal gradients during the actual cooling process. Calculations have shown that the porosity is greater in the range of 1000 to 3600 mm. 2 It is valid for cross sections in the range

[0048] If there is at least one parameter with a maximum result, there is a high risk of obtaining an unusable ingot. Qualitative modeling results are shown in Table 1.

[0049] [Table 1]

[0050] As can be seen from Table 1, if the ratio of the length of the larger base of the trapezoid to the length of the smaller base is equal to 1.1, there is a high probability of the formation of a deep central sump during solidification, which may lead to the appearance of maximum shrinkage porosity. If the ratio of the length of the larger base of the trapezoid to the length of the smaller base of the trapezoid is about 1, it becomes difficult to remove the ingot from the mold.

[0051] If the ratio of the length of the larger base of the trapezoid to the length of the smaller base of the trapezoid is in the range of 1.3 to 1.6, the formation of deep sumps is eliminated and there is no critical tensile stress.

[0052] If the ratio of the length of the larger base of the trapezoid to the length of the smaller base of the trapezoid is greater than 2, the formation of deep sumps is eliminated, but there will be multi-directional vectors of tensile stress at the corners of the larger base of the trapezoid, which will contribute to the fracture of the ingot during deformation. At the same time, it should be noted that there will be thermal gradients at the corners of the larger base of the trapezoid, which will contribute to the formation of segregation zones and, as a result, to the inhomogeneity of the chemical composition of the ingot.

[0053] Based on the obtained results, a mold 5 was made (FIG. 1) with an open groove having a trapezoidal cross section with a major base side 19 and a minor base side 20, as shown in FIG. 3. The mold 5 includes a casting wheel 6, a continuous belt 4, and a cooling system. The continuous belt 4 is wound through a tightening wheel 3. A belt pressing roller 9 presses the belt 4 against the wheel 6. The casting wheel 6 is mounted using a mounting ring 18.

[0054] The produced mold was installed as part of a casting and rolling mill for the production of wire rods made of aluminum and its alloys with a capacity of 2-5 t / h. The continuously cast ingots were rolled in the stands of the rolling mill to obtain aluminum wire rods with diameters of 9.5; 12; 22 mm at the outlet.

[0055] During operation of the mold 5, liquid metal is supplied to the open groove of the casting wheel 6 of the mold 5 through the metal supply system 2, then, as a result of metal solidification, a continuously cast ingot 1 is formed between the walls of the groove and the continuous belt 4, which is cooled during the entire solidification process by coolant supplied to the outer surface 15, inner surface 17 and side surfaces 16 of the casting wheel 6 and the continuous belt 4 through nozzles 7 of the cooling system.

[0056] The cooling system of the mold 5 includes four arc-shaped tubular sprinklers located along the outer surface 15, inner surface 17 and both sides 16 of the casting wheel 6 and made to allow adjustable coolant supply (FIG. 2 with view A), i.e.: an external sprinkler 11 located on the outer surface 15 side of the casting wheel 6 and the continuous belt 4 and used to supply a coolant thereto; an internal sprinkler 12 located on the inner surface 17 of the casting wheel 6 and used to supply coolant thereto; a right sprinkler 10 and a left sprinkler 13 located on the right and left sides 16, respectively, of the casting wheel 6 and used to supply coolant thereto.

[0057] The nozzles 7 are located on an internal sprinkler 12 (FIG. 2) divided into three separate zones by internal partitions, on an external sprinkler 11 also consisting of three separate internal zones, and on two side sprinklers 10, 13 each consisting of two separate zones. Each of the above separate zones is provided with an individual water supply control used to control the supply of water to this zone. A cooling control system is configured individually for each separate zone.

[0058] The choice of the type of nozzle is determined by the selected design of the sprinkler and wheel (wheel size, distance between sprinkler and wheel, etc.), since the nozzle forms a certain shape of the coolant jet. In each particular case, the required shape of the jet is determined and the type of nozzle is selected accordingly. In this case, a flat frame nozzle was installed.

[0059] For more precise individual adjustment of the water flow, a control unit with a needle valve is installed upstream of each nozzle.

[0060] For quick installation / removal of the belt, the right side sprinkler and the inside sprinkler can be moved laterally 20° using a rotating stand (not shown).

[0061] The parameters of the cooling system of mold 5, which uses water as the coolant, are given in Table 2.

[0062] [Table 2]

[0063] A self-cleaning filter 8 (eg, a water filter) may be provided in the coolant (eg, water) supply system (FIG. 1).

[0064] Water flow control is in manual and automatic mode. The temperature of the cooling water is controlled before and after the mould 5.

[0065] Example 2 Determination of conditions that ensure defect-free ingots

[0066] A series of studies were conducted showing the effect of various settings of the cooling system to find the parameters of the coolant flow control of the system that ensure the production of continuously cast ingots free of defects during solidification.

[0067] Melting was carried out using, as an example, an alloy of type 6101 (number 1) and industrial aluminum (number 2), the chemical composition of which is given in Table 3.

[0068] [Table 3]

[0069] The following parameters were used as quality criteria for the ingots: - No shrinkage cavities with a production line capacity of 2t / hour or more.

[0070] The coolant (water) control parameters are shown in Table 4.

[0071] [Table 4]

[0072] From the analysis of the results given in Table 4, it follows that if the ratio of the amount of coolant supplied from the smaller and larger bases of the trapezoidal cross section of the open groove of the casting wheel is less than 1.9, it is not possible to achieve a production capacity of more than 1.5 t / h of defect-free cast ingots.

[0073] If the ratio of the amounts of coolant supplied from the smaller and larger bases of the trapezoidal cross section of the opening groove of the casting wheel (coolant flow from the internal sprinkler to the coolant flow from the external sprinkler) is in the range of 1.9-3.0, it is possible to completely eliminate the formation of defects in the form of shrinkage cavities and ensure a line production capacity of ingots greater than 2 tons / hour (greater than in the prototype), which was confirmed by metallographic studies of the internal structure of the template for continuous casting ingots.

[0074] Most preferably, the ratio of the coolant flow rates (volumes) supplied to the smaller and larger base sides of the trapezoidal cross section of the open groove of the casting wheel (coolant flow from the internal sprinklers to the coolant flow from the external sprinklers) is in the range of 1.9 to 2.4, which ensures maximum production capacity of the casting line.

[0075] The analysis of the template shows that when a mold comprising a casting wheel with the proposed trapezoidal cross-section open grooves is used with the specified adjustment settings of the mold cooling system, i.e. the water flow ratio of each sprinkler, it is possible to eliminate crystallization defects in the form of shrinkage cavities, crystallization cracks, while minimizing the number of segregations in the corners of the larger base of the trapezoid (casting wheel cross-section), which is confirmed by the results of a metallographic study of the internal structure of the template for continuous cast ingots and is also acceptable from the point of view of ingot quality.

[0076] Analysis of the microstructure of the cast ingot made from alloy 6101 (composition no. 1 in Table 3) showed that the typical structure of the ingot is represented by an aluminum solution of silicon and magnesium in aluminum as well as veins of the eutectic iron-containing phase. Analysis of the structure of the cast ingot made from industrial aluminum (composition no. 2 in Table 3) showed that the structure is represented by an aluminum solution with veins of the eutectic iron-containing phase. At the same time, the calculated cooling rates within the solidification interval of the 6101 alloy and industrial aluminum (Table 3) in the entire cross section were at least 10 K / s. Due to the high cooling rates implemented when using the proposed mold, the structure of the known industrial alloy containing iron, silicon, magnesium, zirconium, scandium, manganese, titanium, copper, nickel and chromium will be represented mainly by an aluminum solution and eutectic phases formed by the corresponding alloying elements.

[0077] The use of the claimed mould makes it possible to obtain high quality (substantially defect-free) continuously cast ingots, which can be further processed into products at lower production costs, i.e. the claimed mould makes it possible to increase the manufacturability of the ingots, while at the same time ensuring a high production capacity of more than 2 t / h of the casting line.
