Abstract

This disclosure provides a description of a system and method for verifying the authenticity of a product at a point of sale via a transaction message. The point of sale may collect a product identifier from a product that a consumer is interested in purchasing as part of a traditional checkout process. The product identifier may be included in a special data element in the transaction message that is submitted to the merchant's acquiring bank for the payment transaction. As part of the processing of the transaction by the acquirer, the acquirer may check the authenticity of the product being purchased by querying a processor to look up a provenance blockchain for the product identifier included in the transaction message. If the product is determined to be authentic, the transaction may proceed as normal. If the product is not authentic, the acquirer rejects the transaction.
