Determination of Eye Movement

Abstract

A method for operating a display of a virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) headset (1), the method comprising: determining a movement direction of a user's eye (6), estimating a future gaze direction from the determined movement direction, and rendering on the display an image comprising higher resolution image data in a region including the estimated gaze direction and lower resolution image data outside the region including the determined gaze direction, wherein determining the movement direction of the user's eye (6) comprises illuminating the user's eye (6) with a light beam (11) emitted by a first laser (4), receiving at the first laser (4) light redirected from the user's eye (6) such that self-mixing interference (14) occurs within the laser cavity between the light generated by the first laser and the light redirected from the user's eye (12), measuring the self-mixing interference (14), and determining the movement direction of the user's eye (6) from the measured self-mixing interference (14).
