Provided is a sludge layer detection method capable of easily and inexpensively detecting the interface height between a sludge layer formed at the bottom of a storage tank and water. 【Solution means】 In a storage tank 100 for storing water to be treated, a method for detecting a first interface S1, which is an interface between a sludge layer L1 and a water layer L2 formed at the bottom of the storage tank 100, using a first float 3 whose specific gravity is adjusted to be located at the height of the first interface S1, the method comprising: a step of holding the first float 3 in water above the first interface S1; and a step of detecting the height of the first float 3 that has fallen to and stopped at the first interface S1 by releasing the holding of the first float 3.
