To provide a novel deactivator and a novel deactivation method capable of deactivating a nonaqueous secondary battery.SOLUTION: A deactivator for deactivating a nonaqueous secondary battery contains: a redox shuttle agent whose redox potential is higher than that of a negative electrode active material of the nonaqueous secondary battery and lower than that of a positive electrode active material of the nonaqueous secondary battery, at an Li reference potential, and that contains a diazabenzene-based compound having a diazabenzene skeleton; and a nonaqueous solvent.SELECTED DRAWING: None
