AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Lithium secondary batteries in battery modules and packs are prone to rapid pressure increases and potential collapse or explosion during thermal events, posing risks of fire spread and secondary damage.
Method used
A battery module design featuring pouch-type cells housed in a module case with vent holes, supported by a cell cover that includes protrusions inserted into these holes to manage pressure and direct venting of gases and particles away from adjacent cells.
Benefits of technology
The design slows pressure rise and safely directs vent gases, preventing module collapse and explosion, thereby containing thermal damage to adjacent cells.
