Abstract
A graphite-containing electrode is described that includes a zirconium-based coating that retards loss of material from the electrode when used at elevated temperatures, e.g., when used in an arc furnace at 1000-2000°C. The zirconium-based coating may be disposed on the graphite-containing surface of the electrode or on a pre-coating that is disposed on the surface of the electrode. The zirconium-based coating includes one or more zirconium compounds, such as zirconia. Compositions and methods for coating the graphite-containing electrode with the zirconium-based coating composition are also described.
