TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 215,392, filed June 25, 2021, entitled "ALUMINUM CORROSION INHIBITORS AND METHODS OF USING SAME", and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 228,567, filed August 2, 2021, entitled "COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR INHIBITING WHITE RUST", the entire disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference for all purposes.

[0002] Water is inherently corrosive, as it tends to undergo reactions that release hydrogen atoms. In water-using systems, corrosion inhibitors are generally introduced into the system to extend the service life of system components such as pipes and conduits.

[0003] Corrosion is the result of a complex series of reactions. For example, corrosion can occur between water and metal surfaces (such as metal piping) or materials in which water is stored or transported. The corrosion process is an oxidation-reduction reaction that results in the conversion of refined or processed metals to a more stable state. Two major categories of non-ferrous metal-containing materials are aluminum-containing materials and zinc-containing materials.

[0004] Corrosion of aluminum-containing materials (e.g., aluminum alloys) is typically addressed by using soluble silicates (inorganic acid technology - IAT) in closed-loop cooling systems. IAT inhibitors were designed in an era when engines were primarily composed of iron alloys. To adequately suppress the corrosion of ferrous metals, IAT inhibitors are usually buffered to a pH range of 10-11 using borate buffers. Since this pH range is not optimal for inhibiting aluminum corrosion, such inhibitors often contained silicates, which are well-known aluminum corrosion inhibitors. However, when hard water is introduced into cooling systems treated with these inhibitors, calcium and magnesium silicates precipitate, creating harmful deposits and rendering the corrosion inhibitory effect ineffective. Modern internal combustion engines have a higher aluminum content and lower iron alloy content than older generations of engines, making aluminum corrosion inhibition relatively more important.

[0005] Another type of corrosion inhibitor for aluminum-containing materials utilizes organic acid technology (OAT) in a closed-loop system. OAT uses mixtures of aliphatic monobasic and dibasic acid salts, such as benzotriazole, mercaptobenzothiazole, toltriazole, and their derivatives, that have been found to be effective as corrosion inhibitors at high doses. These inhibitors are mixtures of monobasic and dibasic aliphatic acids, such as sebacic acid and heptanoic acid, and include buffers to control the pH of the composition within the range of 8-9. OAT inhibitors may also include inorganic components such as silicates and nitrites, which are referred to as "hybrid technologies." However, these hybrid technologies also suffer from adverse effects due to hard water precipitation and toxicity issues.

[0006] Another form of non-ferrous corrosion occurs in the aqueous corrosion of the zinc layer of galvanized steel. This results in a large amount of fracturing layer of corrosion products commonly known as "white rust." White rust is a white, calcium carbonate-like substance that forms on the surface of zinc materials such as galvanized steel. Common mechanisms to mitigate white rust formation include adjusting the chemical properties of the aqueous fluid in contact with the galvanized steel to conditions unsuitable for white rust formation. This mechanism to mitigate white rust formation is not optimal because it requires the possibility of continuous monitoring and adjustment of the fluid composition to ensure that conditions unsuitable for white rust formation are maintained.

[0007] There is a continuing demand for novel corrosion inhibitors for non-ferrous metal-containing materials that do not have the above-mentioned drawbacks. [Brief explanation of the drawing]

[0008] For a detailed description of the disclosed methods and systems, please refer to the attached drawings.

[0009] [Figure 1] Figure 1 is a graph showing the corrosion rate of the sample from Example 1 as a function of time.

[0010] [Figure 2] Figure 2 is a photograph of the test specimen exposed to the sample of Example 2. [Overview of the project]

[Modes for carrying out the invention]

[0014] To more clearly define the terms used herein, the following definitions are provided. Unless otherwise specified, the following definitions apply to this disclosure. If a term is used in this disclosure but is not specifically defined herein, the definition in IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology, 2nd Ed (1997) may be applied, provided that the definition does not conflict with other disclosures or definitions applicable herein, or that it does not obscure or render unusable the claims to which the definition applies.

[0015] The element groups in the periodic table are represented using the numbering method shown in the version of the periodic table published in Chemical and Engineering News, 63(5), 27, 1985. For example, alkali metals are Group 1 elements, alkaline earth metals are Group 2 elements, transition metals are Groups 3-12 elements, and halogens are Group 17 elements.

[0016] Regarding transitional terms or phrases in claims, the transitional phrase "having," which is synonymous with "including," "containing," "equipping," or "characterized by," is comprehensive or open-ended and does not exclude additional, uncited elements or steps of a method. The transitional phrase "consisting of" excludes elements, steps, or components not specified in the claim. The transitional phrase "consisting essentially of" limits the scope of the claim to the specified materials or steps and those that do not materially affect the basic and novel features of the invention described in the claim. Claims "consisting essentially of" occupy an intermediate position between closed claims written in the "consisting only of" form and fully open claims written in the "having" form. Unless otherwise specified, when describing a compound or composition, "consisting essentially of" is not to be interpreted as "having," but is intended to refer to described components, including materials, that do not materially alter the composition or method to which the term applies. Where a composition and method is described using the term "having" various components or steps, the composition and method may also "become" or "become" of various components or steps.

[0038] In one embodiment, the CIC-Al of this disclosure includes a ring-opening agent. While not intended to be limited by theory, the biochelating agents disclosed herein exist in equilibrium between the carboxylic acid and lactone forms of the disclosed compounds. The carboxylic acid form of the disclosed biochelating agents plays a role in chelating metal ions that act to corrode metal surfaces of the type disclosed herein. When a ring-opening agent binds to a linear biochelating agent, it retains the linear biochelating agent and shifts the equilibrium to decrease or minimize the lactone biochelating agent. [0050] In one embodiment, the solvent may be present in an amount of about 10% to about 100% of the total volume of CIC-Zn. In another embodiment, the solvent may be present in CIC-Zn in an amount that constitutes the remainder of the composition once all other components are determined.

[0051] In one or more embodiments, the types of corrosion inhibitor compositions disclosed herein (e.g., CIC-Al, CIC-Zn, etc.) can be prepared by any suitable method. For example, two or more components of a corrosion inhibitor composition (e.g., a biochelating agent and a solvent) can be blended or mixed in a suitable container (e.g., a vessel, a blender, etc.). In one embodiment, the components of a corrosion inhibitor composition are mixed to form a homogeneous mixture that can be introduced into a system to promote corrosion inhibition.

[0052] A corrosion inhibitor composition can be introduced into an aqueous system in an amount effective to promote the activity targeted by the user and / or method (e.g., corrosion inhibition). For example, to effectively inhibit corrosion, the corrosion inhibitor composition may need to be present above a certain concentration. The minimum amount of inhibitor required to prevent corrosion is generally called the "minimum inhibitory concentration" (MIC) or "minimum effective concentration" (MEC). In one or more embodiments, a system into which a corrosion inhibitor composition has been introduced may be monitored to ensure that the amount of corrosion inhibitor composition maintains the MIC or MEC for that particular system.

[0053] In one embodiment, the MIC or MEC of the active components of CIC-Zn and / or CIC-Al (e.g., components other than the solvent) may be in the range of about 1 ppm to about 100 ppm, about 5 ppm to about 50 ppm, or about 10 ppm to about 30 ppm by weight in the aqueous fluid in the system.

[0054] In one or more embodiments, the type of corrosion inhibitor composition disclosed herein can also function to suppress scale formation. Here, scale refers to hard mineral coatings and corrosive deposits consisting of solids and sediments that accumulate on or inside water distribution systems, pipes, reservoirs and water conduits. In some embodiments, the type of corrosion inhibitor composition disclosed herein can reduce scale in systems containing industrial water to about 10% to about 90%, about 20% to about 80%, or about 30% to about 80% of the amount of scale that would form in the absence of the type of corrosion inhibitor composition disclosed herein.

[0055] The aqueous system into which the corrosion inhibitor composition may be introduced may further contain calcium ions, magnesium ions, or both. In one embodiment, the corrosion inhibitor composition is introduced into the system by any suitable method. For example, CIC-Zn and / or CIC-Al may be injected through a suitable system inlet, such as a port or valve, that brings CIC-Zn and / or CIC-Al into contact with the aqueous system. In one embodiment, the method of the Disclosure further includes monitoring and adjusting the amount of the corrosion inhibitor composition to maintain the amount of the composition in the system within a range required by the user and / or the method. In one embodiment, the type of corrosion inhibitor composition disclosed herein may be introduced into the system manually. In another embodiment, the introduction of the corrosion inhibitor composition may be automated. A method may be developed to monitor the concentration of the corrosion inhibitor composition in the system. Monitoring of the dosage of the corrosion inhibitor composition in the system may be continuous, semi-continuous, discontinuous, automatic, manual, or a combination thereof.

[0056] This method may involve programming a device such as a pump to supply a predetermined dose of the corrosion inhibitor composition to a particular system, which is at least MIC or MEC. This method can be automated by using a suitable supply device, such as a material feeder, or a pump, such as a programmable pump. The device, such as a pump, can be programmed to operate a specific number of times at specific execution time intervals to add only the necessary amount of the corrosion inhibitor composition to the water being treated.

[0057] In some embodiments, the corrosion inhibitor compositions of the present disclosure surprisingly exhibit improved corrosion inhibition compared to conventional corrosion inhibitors. For example, CIC-Al, which contains a biochelating agent, an organic acid, and a conventional corrosion inhibitor (e.g., triazole), shows unexpectedly beneficial improvements in corrosion inhibition of about 10% to about 100%, about 70% to about 90%, or about 90% to about 99% compared to the corrosion inhibition observed with conventional corrosion inhibitors alone.

[0058] In one embodiment, a synergistic effect can be observed when the type of corrosion inhibitor composition disclosed herein is used in combination with a common corrosion inhibitor (e.g., triazole). As a result, the minimum concentration of the common corrosion inhibitor required to effectively address corrosion problems may be reduced. Specifically, the addition of the type of corrosion inhibitor composition disclosed herein may reduce the amount of common corrosion inhibitor required to achieve the same level of corrosion suppression by about 10%, 15%, or even 20% or more. Consequently, the amount of common corrosion inhibitor used decreases, and consequently, the costs and environmental impact associated with the manufacture and use of these compounds also decrease.

[0059] Examples While the subject matter of this disclosure has been described in general terms, the following examples are presented to illustrate specific aspects of the subject matter and to demonstrate their implementation and merits. It should be understood that the examples are presented for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of this specification or the claims in any way.

[0060] Example 1 The effectiveness of corrosion inhibitor compositions was evaluated. Specifically, the corrosion rate of aluminum test specimens was measured in mills per year (mpy) for the following: (1) a blank sample containing only saline solution (no additives), (2) CIC-Al containing 84% glucaric acid solution and 16% LaCl3 salt, (3) CIC-Al containing 53.6% aqueous glucaric acid solution, (4) CIC-Al containing 31.4% aqueous sodium aluminate solution, 53.6% aqueous glucaric acid solution, and 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and (5) 4 ppm sodium tolyltriazole (TTA). The corrosion rate was measured using aluminum test specimens under the following test conditions: 100% water content, 3% NaCl saline solution, rotation speed of 100 rpm, pH 8, and reaction time of 24 hours.

[0061] Table 1 shows the experimental results of the amount of corrosion observed in mpy after 24 hours, and Figure 1 shows the corrosion rate as a function of time in the sample. [Table 1]

[0062] Surprisingly, the corrosion inhibitor compositions of the type disclosed herein were demonstrated to provide significantly better corrosion inhibition of aluminum alloys than uncomplexed acids and other compounds. Corrosion inhibitor compositions of the type disclosed herein, containing aluminum complexes or lanthanum complexes, showed the highest level of corrosion inhibition.

[0063] Example 2 The effectiveness of CIC-Zn as a corrosion inhibitor for galvanized steel sheets was evaluated. Specifically, a one-week corrosion test was conducted on multiple galvanized test specimens, simulating severe corrosion conditions with high chloride content and low alkalinity. The specific conditions were as follows: after air purging, the galvanized test specimens were exposed for one week to 25 ppm alkalinity, 2000 ppm chloride, pH 8 to 8.5, and a temperature of 40°C. The weight of the test specimens was measured before and after the test, and the corrosion rate was calculated. The test results are shown in Table 2. [Table 2]

[0064] As shown in Table 2, the performance of TTA is improved by adding glucaric acid (6.28 MPY vs. 3.54 MPY). Furthermore, the corrosion rates are dramatically reduced to 0.29 MPY and 0.36 MPY, respectively, when cations such as silicates and aluminates are used, with or without azoles.

[0065] Images of the test specimens from Tests 1-5 are shown in Figure 2. As can be seen in Figure 2, a considerable amount of white rust occurred with TTA alone (Test 1), and the corrosion rate was also high. With CIC-Zn alone or in the presence of TTA (No. 4, No. 5), the corrosion rate was the lowest, and the test specimens were the cleanest.
