Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] (Cross-Reference to Related Applications) This application claims the benefit of the filing dates of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 329,794 filed on April 11, 2022, and U.S. Patent Application No. 18 / 189,515 filed on March 24, 2023, the disclosures of which are hereby incorporated herein by reference in their entirety as if fully set forth below and for all applicable purposes.
[0002] The present disclosure is generally directed to an excavating wear member assembly including a fastening assembly that secures components of the excavating wear member assembly. More specifically, the present disclosure is directed to an excavating wear member assembly secured by a fastening assembly having an improved locking structure that can enhance connection stability.
BACKGROUND ART
[0003] Material displacement apparatuses such as excavating buckets found in construction, mining, and other earth moving equipment often include replaceable wear elements such as earth engaging wear members. These frequently generate scraping wear contact with the ground or other materials to be removed. For example, an excavating wear member assembly typically comprises a relatively large adapter portion that is suitably secured to or formed as part of a machine component such as a front bucket lip. The adapter portion typically has a forwardly projecting nose with a reduced cross-section. A wear member, such as a replaceable intermediate adapter or a replaceable tooth tip, typically includes an opening that removably receives the adapter nose. To retain the tooth tip or intermediate adapter on the nose, generally aligned transverse openings are formed in both the tooth tip, the intermediate adapter, and the nose, and a suitable connector structure is disposed within the aligned openings and forcibly retained therein to releasably secure the replaceable wear member on the associated nose.
[0004] Many different types of conventional connector structures exist. One type of connector structure typically requires, for example, a thread hammer to forcibly hammer the aligned teeth and adapter nose opening into place. The inserted connector structure then requires forcibly hammering out the teeth and adapter nose opening to allow worn teeth to be removed from the adapter nose and replaced. This conventional need to hammer in and then hammer out the connector structure was difficult and time-consuming.
[0005] Various alternatives to hammered-in connector structures have been previously proposed to allow wear members to be releasably held. While these alternative connector structures preferably eliminate the need to insert and remove the connector structure from the adapter nose, they present a variety of other types of problems, limitations, and drawbacks, including, but not limited to, structural complexity and undesirable high costs of use.
[0006] Some types of connector structures are rotatable between a locked and unlocked position. However, continuous vibration of the tooth tip, high impact, and repeated loading of the cutting edge can lead to unintentional rotation of the connector structure from the locked to the unlocked position. This can cause excessive wear at the interface between the connector structure and the tooth tip, potentially affecting the service life of both the connector structure and the tooth tip. Furthermore, this can lead to the loss of ground-meshing wear members, which can damage the bucket and equipment. This can also result in more downtime and reduced productivity.
[0007] Therefore, there is a need for an improved connector structure. [Overview of the Initiative]

These figures will be better understood by referring to the detailed description below. [Modes for carrying out the invention]
[0023] For the purpose of facilitating understanding of the principles of this disclosure, examples shown in the drawings are referenced here, and specific terminology is used to describe them. Nevertheless, it will be understood that no limitation of the scope of this disclosure is intended. Any modifications and further improvements to the apparatus, apparatus, methods, and any further uses described in the principles of this disclosure are fully intended to be as would be commonly conceived by a person skilled in the art to which this disclosure relates. In addition, this disclosure describes in detail some elements or features with respect to one or more examples or drawings, but such a more detailed description is not given if those same elements or features appear in subsequent drawings. Features, components, and / or steps described with respect to one or more examples or drawings are fully intended to be combined with features, components, and / or steps described with respect to other examples or drawings of this disclosure. For simplicity, in some examples, the same or similar reference numbers are used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or similar parts.
[0024] This disclosure relates to ground meshing wear assemblies, including fastening assemblies configured to removably secure wear members to other wear members or machine structures. In some examples, the fastening assembly can secure wear members such as teeth, adapters including main adapters and / or intermediate adapters, shrouds, lips, or other wear members to other wear members, base structures, or lips. In one example, the fastening assembly can secure a drilling tooth to an adapter, whether the adapter is an intermediate adapter, an adapter fixed to a lip, or an integral part of a lip. In other examples, the fastening assembly can secure a drilling tooth directly to a nose on a lip. A tooth, as an exemplary wear member, has a cavity that fits the front end of an adapter and openings on both sides that are shaped to fit the fastening assembly. The fastening assembly may include a collar that can be inserted from the cavity into the opening of the tooth. The collar may include externally one or more collar locks that compress when the collar is inserted into the opening and decompress when it passes through collar lock engagement holes located in the walls of the opening. These secure the collar to the opening of the tooth. Once the collar is inserted, the tooth is positioned on the adapter. The adapter may have openings on both sides that align with the openings of the teeth when the teeth are placed on the adapter. To secure the teeth to the adapter, a pin can be inserted into the opening of the teeth and pass through the opening of the adapter. The collar may have a pin lock that compresses when the pin is inserted and decompresses when it passes through a pin lock engagement hole on the pin. This secures the pin to the collar and locks the teeth to the adapter. Fastening assemblies may be used to secure other elements to the ground engagement assembly, including, for example, securing the adapter to the nose of the lip, securing the shroud to the lip, or securing the wear runner to the lip.
[0025] Figure 1 shows a ground engagement assembly 100 using a collar and pin fastening assembly 102 according to one embodiment of the present invention. Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the ground engagement member 100 shown in Figure 1. The ground engagement member 100 comprises a nose 110 (visible only in Figure 2) which may be formed on the lip of a support structure 104 (visible only in Figure 1, e.g., a bucket). The ground engagement member 100 may also include an adapter 120 which may be an intermediate adapter that can be attached to the nose 110. Furthermore, the ground engagement member 100 may also include teeth 130 which can be attached to the adapter 120.
[0026] The adapter 120 can be fastened to the nose 110 via a fastening assembly 102. In the examples described herein, the fastening assembly 102 may include a collar 140 and a pin 150, as will be described in more detail below. The adapter 120 has a cavity 122 at its rear end 124 (not visible in Figures 1 and 2, but described later herein). The cavity 122 of the adapter 120 can be fitted onto the front end 112 of the nose 110. The nose may have an opening 114 formed to receive the fastening assembly 102. In this embodiment, the nose 110 has two openings 114, with one opening 114 on each side of the nose 110. In other examples, the nose 110 may have only one opening 114 on one side. In some embodiments, the openings 114 may be in another part of the nose 110, for example, a part including the top. Multiple openings 114 may be connected to form a through passage through the nose 110, or they may be blind holes. The adapter 120 also has openings 126, 127 formed to cooperate with the fastening assembly 102. In this embodiment, the adapter 120 has four openings 126, 127, namely two rear openings 126 and two front openings 127. The rear openings 126 are located near the rear end 124 of the adapter 120, with one opening 126 on each side of the adapter 120. The front openings 127 are located near the front end 128 of the adapter 120, with one opening 127 on each side of the adapter 120. In other embodiments, the nose 110 may have one opening 114, or it may have three or more openings 114. In other embodiments, the adapter 120 may have any number of openings 126, 127, for example, one rear opening 126 and one front opening 127. In some embodiments, the openings 126, 127 may be in other parts of the adapter 120, for example, the top.
[0027] Before the adapter 120 is positioned on the nose 110, the collars 140 (also visible in the cross-section of Figure 3) may be inserted into each rear opening 126 of the adapter 120. In some embodiments, the rear openings 126 pass from the outside of the adapter 120 to the cavity 122 of the adapter 120. Thus, the collars 140 may be inserted from the cavity 122 into the rear openings 126. The structure and purpose of the collars 140 will be described in more detail below with reference to Figures 7 to 10. Once the collars 140 are inserted into the rear openings 126 of the adapter 120, the adapter 120 may be positioned on the nose 110 such that the rear openings 126 of the adapter 120 align with the openings 114 of the nose 110. The pins 150 can then be inserted through one of the collars 140 in the rear openings 126 of the adapter 120 and through the corresponding openings 114 of the nose 110. Therefore, the pin 150 extends through both the adapter 120 and the nose 110. By inserting the pin 150 through the openings 126 and 114, the pin 150 secures the adapter 120 to the nose 110.
[0028] Similarly, the tooth 130 can also be fastened to the adapter 120 via another fastening assembly 102, which may be identical to the one described above. The fastening assembly 102 includes a collar 140 and a pin 150. The tooth 130 has a cavity 132 (not visible in Figures 1 and 2, but described later in this specification) at its rear end 134. The cavity 132 of the tooth 130 can be fitted onto the front end 128 of the adapter 120. The tooth 130 may also have an opening 136 formed to fit into the fastening assembly. In this embodiment, the tooth 130 has two openings 136, with one opening 136 on each side of the nose 130. However, in other embodiments, the tooth 130 may have only one opening 136, or it may have three or more openings 136. In some embodiments, the opening 136 may be on another part of the tooth 130, for example, on the upper part.
[0029] Similar to the above, using adapter 120, the collar 140 may be inserted into the opening 136 of the tooth 130 before the tooth 130 is positioned on the adapter 120. In some embodiments, the opening 136 passes through the cavity 132 of the tooth 130 from the outside of the tooth 130. Thus, the collar 140 may be inserted into the opening 136 from the cavity 132. Once the collar 140 is inserted into the opening 136 of the tooth 130, the tooth 130 can be positioned on the front end 128 of the adapter 120 so that the opening 136 of the tooth 130 aligns with the front opening 127 of the adapter 120. The pin 150 can then be inserted through one of the collars 140 in the opening 136 of the tooth 130 and through the corresponding front opening 127 of the adapter 120. Thus, the pin 150 extends through both the tooth 130 and the adapter 120. By inserting the pin 150 through the openings 136 and 127, the pin 150 secures the teeth 130 to the adapter 120.
[0030] In this embodiment, the openings are located on the sides of the nose 110, adapter 120, and teeth 130. However, the openings may be located anywhere on the nose 110, adapter 120, or teeth 130, for example, on the bottom or top surface.
[0031] The fastening assembly 102 generally operates in the same manner for fastening an adapter to a nose, for fastening teeth to an adapter or an adapter nose, or for fastening any wear member to another wear member or mechanical structure. Thus, the following describes an embodiment for fastening teeth to an adapter, but the disclosure is not limited thereto and may include fastening any two members together.
[0032] Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view of an assembled tooth 130 and adapter 120 fixed using a fastening assembly 102 according to one embodiment (the cross section is taken through the fastening assembly 102). In this embodiment, a collar 140 is positioned within an opening 136 in the tooth 130. A pin 150 is screwed into the collar 140 such that the pin 150 extends into both the tooth 130 and the adapter 120. Figure 3 shows a transverse nose axis 131. In some embodiments, the nose may be part of a lip, adapter, intermediate adapter, or other wear member component. Here, the transverse nose axis 131 may be coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the pin 150. A longitudinal axis of the tooth 106 is also present.
[0033] In some implementations, the collar 140, openings 136 and 127 are formed such that the hole 141 in the collar 140 is biased forward. The pin 150 may be tapered from the outward-facing end 151 to the cavity-facing end 157 so that when the pin 150 is positioned in the collar 140 and the opening 127 of the adapter 120, the opening 136 is biased forward so that the front surface 159 of the pin 150 contacts the front surface 129 of the opening 127 along its length. The front surface 159 of the pin 150 may form an angle α with the front surface 129 of the opening 127. The angle α can be any suitable angle including angles in the range of 0° to 8°, but a larger angle is intended. When the hole 141 is biased forward, the length of the pin 150 presses against the front surface 129 of the opening 127. This stabilizes pin 150 and provides a more uniform load along pin 150 when the teeth and adapter assembly are in use.
[0034] The tooth 130 has an outer surface 135 and an inner surface 137. The opening 136 of the tooth 130 has two parts, namely a narrow part 180 and a wide part 181. The narrow part 180 is located at the outward-facing end 182 of the opening 136. The wide part 181 is located at the end 183 facing the cavity of the opening 136. On one side of the opening 136, there may be a shoulder 184 between the narrow part 180 and the wide part 181. The shoulder 184 forms a protruding recess 185 within the wide part 181. In some implementations, the shoulder 184 and the protruding recess 185 may be located along the opening 136 toward the front end 133 of the tooth 130. In other embodiments, there may be a shoulder 184 between the narrow part 180 and the wide part 181 that surrounds the entire circumference of the two parts. In some of these embodiments, the depth of the shoulder 184 may not be uniform.
[0035] Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a fastening assembly 102 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 5 shows a plan view of the fastening assembly 102 shown in Figure 4. Figure 6 shows an exploded view of the fastening assembly 102 shown in Figure 4. The collar 140 is generally cylindrical, with a cylindrical hole 141 passing from one face of the cylinder to the other. However, in other embodiments, the collar 140 may be shaped like another prism, such as a rectangular prism, a square prism, or a hexagonal prism, having a cylindrical hole 141 or hole 141 of any other shape. The collar 140 includes a continuous portion 190 and a protrusion 146 (or discontinuous portion). The protrusion 146 extends beyond the continuous portion 190 of the cylinder, thereby making the thickness of the protrusion 146 greater than the thickness of the continuous portion 190. In some embodiments, the protrusion 146 may have a flat side surface 147, or a flat surface 149 connecting two side surfaces 147. In other embodiments, the protrusion 146 may be of a different size or shape. For example, the protrusion may be smaller or larger than in this embodiment, may be a single point, or may be rounded. Furthermore, the side surface 147 or face 149 of the protrusion 146 may be curved. The protrusion 146 prevents the collar 140 from rotating when the collar 140 is positioned within the opening 136 of the teeth 130.
[0036] The collar 140 may be tapered from the cavity-facing end 145 to the outward-facing end 143, as will be described in more detail below with reference to Figure 11.
[0037] The exterior of the collar 140 includes two collar locks 160. However, in other embodiments, there may be one collar lock 160 or three or more collar locks 160. The collar locks 160 lock the collar into the opening of the teeth (or other member). The operation of the collar 140 will be described in more detail below with reference to Figures 7 to 10. The collar 140 has a recess 142 that holds two collar locks formed to fit the collar locks 160. The collar lock 160 has a head 164 and a compressible base 162. In this embodiment, the compressible base 162 is made of rubber. However, the compressible base 162 may be made of any compressible material. Furthermore, in other embodiments, the compressible base 162 may be a spring or other biasing member. The head 164 of the collar lock 160 may be made of the same material as the compressible base 162 or a different material. In some embodiments, the head 164 of the collar lock 160 may be made of a material that is less compressible than the compressible base 162. For example, the head may be made of a metal such as steel, a polymer, or other suitable material. The compressible base 162 can be attached to the recess 142 of the collar lock on the collar 140 by any suitable means. For example, the compressible base 162 can be attached using adhesive, press-fit, ultrasonic welding, or other mounting systems. In this embodiment, the head 164 is elliptical. In other embodiments, the head 164 can be any suitable shape. In this embodiment, the shape of the compressible base 162 is similar to the shape of the head 164, but it has a greater height. In other embodiments, the compressible base 162 may be any suitable shape and may not be the same shape as the head 164. In yet another embodiment, the collar lock 160 may be a single component rather than having a compressible base 162 and a head 164.
[0038] In this embodiment, the pin 150 is cylindrical and has threads 154 extending downward from the top of the pin 150 along a portion of the shaft 193. The hole 141 in the collar 140 may have threads 144 at least partially so that the threads 154 can engage with the threads of the hole 141 so that the pin 150 can be screwed into the collar 140 through the hole 141. In this embodiment, the threads 154 only extend from the top of the pin 150 down a portion of the shaft 193, but in other embodiments, the threads 154 may extend all the way down the shaft 193 to the bottom. In yet another embodiment, the threads 154 may extend shorter than the length of the pin 150.
[0039] A tool engagement portion 152 may be present extending from the top of the pin 150. The tool engagement portion 152 may have a recess 153. In this embodiment, the tool engagement portion 152 is hexagonal, having a hexagonal recess 153 that matches the features of the exterior 156. However, in other embodiments, the tool engagement portion 152 may be of any suitable shape. In some embodiments, the features of the recess 153 of the tool engagement portion 152 do not match the features of the exterior 156 of the tool engagement portion 152. A tool can engage with the tool engagement portion 153 by contacting the exterior 156 or interior 153. In some cases, the exterior 156 of the tool engagement portion 152 may wear down, and therefore the pin 150 may be removed or inserted using the recess 153. If the tool engagement portion 152 wears down too much to function properly, the pin 150 can be removed by any suitable method, including, for example, pushing it out. Any suitable tool, including a pry bar, screwdriver, or other tool, can be used to engage with the tool engagement portion 152.
[0040] The pin 150 may have a chamfered portion 158 along its bottom edge. The chamfered portion 158 facilitates installation by making it easier to insert the pin 150 into the collar 140. Furthermore, the chamfered portion 158 reduces stress along the body and shaft portion 193 of the pin 150.
[0041] The pin lock 170 may be attached to the collar 140. The pin lock 170 locks the pin 150 into the collar 140, as will be described in more detail below with reference to Figures 11-12. The collar 140 has a recess 148 formed to hold the pin lock, which is fitted into the pin lock 170. The recess 148 that holds the pin lock is located inside the collar 140 along the hole 141. In this embodiment, the recess 148 that holds the pin lock is located above the hole 141 and is aligned with the protrusion 146. In other embodiments, the recess may be located at any location along the hole 141. The pin lock 170 has a plunger 172 and a compressible body 174. The compressible body 174 surrounds a portion of the plunger 172 and biases the plunger radially inward to engage the plunger with the pin 150 as described herein. The front end 173 of the plunger 172 extends radially inward beyond the compressible body 174. In this embodiment, the plunger 172 is L-shaped. However, in other embodiments, the plunger 172 may be any other suitable shape, including, for example, a T-shape or a linear shape.
[0042] The compressible body 174 can be formed from any suitable material. For example, in this embodiment, the compressible body 174 is made of rubber or polymer that can exert an elastic biasing force when subjected to load. In this embodiment, the pin lock 170 is press-fitted into the recess 148 that holds the pin lock. The bottom of the pin lock 170 is wider and longer than the top of the pin lock 170. The compressible body 174 of the pin lock 170 can be compressed and positioned within the recess 148 that holds the pin lock, and the shape of the pin lock 170 prevents the pin lock from falling out. However, the compressible body 174 of the pin lock 170 may be attached to the recess 148 that holds the pin lock of the collar 140 by any suitable means. For example, in some embodiments, the pin lock 170 may be attached to the recess 148 of the pin lock by adhesive, tack welding, or by other means. The plunger 172 can be made of any suitable material. For example, the plunger may be made of metal such as steel, polymer, or other material. The plunger 172 may be attached to the compressible body 174 in any suitable way, including, for example, being embedded therein, or being attached by adhesive, tack welding, or otherwise fixed thereto. When the pin 150 is screwed into the collar 140, the front end 173 of the plunger 172 can be fitted into the pin lock engagement hole 155 on the pin 150, as will be described in more detail below.
[0043] Figures 7 and 8 show cross-sections of a fastening assembly 102 inserted into an opening 136 of a tooth 130. Figure 7 is a longitudinal cross-section of the fastening assembly 102 inserted into the tooth 130 along a hole 141 in a collar 140 (as shown in Figure 4). Figure 8 is a transverse cross-section of the fastening assembly 102 inserted into the tooth 130, cut across a collar lock 160. The shape of the opening 136 generally reflects the external shape of the collar 140. The opening 136 of the tooth 130 includes two collar lock engagement holes 138. The collar lock engagement holes 138 are formed to receive the heads 164 of the collar lock 160. In this embodiment, two collar locks 160 are fitted into the two collar lock engagement holes 138 within the opening 136 of the tooth 130. The heads 162 of the collar locks 160 engage with the collar lock engagement holes 138. In this embodiment, the color locks 160 are located on both sides of the protrusion 146 of the collar 140. However, in other embodiments, the color locks 160 may be positioned at any position along the outside of the collar 140. For example, the color locks 160 may be positioned opposite each other (180° apart), 90° apart, or at any other angle to each other. Furthermore, one or more of the color locks 160 may be positioned on the protrusion 146. In this embodiment, there are two color locks 160, but in other embodiments, there may be any number of color locks 160, for example, one or three color locks.
[0044] Figures 9 and 10 show rear views of the collar 140 inserted into the opening of the tooth 130. Figure 9 shows the collar before insertion, and Figure 10 shows the collar after insertion. The collar 140 is aligned with the opening 136 such that the protrusion 146 of the collar 140 aligns with the protruding recess 145. The collar 140 is then pushed into the opening 136. As the collar 140 is pushed into the opening 136, the surface of the opening 136 presses against the head 162 of the collar lock 160. This compresses the compressible base 164 of the collar lock 160. As the collar lock 160 moves along the collar lock engagement hole 138, the compressible base 164 is decompressed back to its original shape. The head 164 of the collar lock 160 is then positioned within the collar lock engagement hole 138, locking the collar 140 onto the tooth 130. Once locked, the collar 140 cannot rotate or move back and forth. Furthermore, the tapered shape of the collar 140 and shoulder portion 184 prevents the collar from advancing through the opening 136 to the outside of the teeth 130. In some embodiments, the collar 140 may be pushed out of the opening 136 when replacing teeth or fastening assembly 102.
[0045] Once the collar 140 is engaged with the teeth 130, the teeth 130 can be inserted onto the adapter 120. The pin 150 can then be inserted into the collar 140 to secure the teeth 130 to the adapter 120. Figure 11 shows a longitudinal section of the fastening assembly 102, the section passing through the pin lock 170 (shown in Figure 4). Figure 12 shows a cross section of the fastening assembly 102, this section passing through the pin lock 170. The pin lock 170 is positioned within a recess 148 that holds the pin lock, with the top 171 of the pin lock 170 aligned with the outward end 143 of the collar 140, and the bottom 175 of the pin lock 170 in contact with the bottom 176 of the recess 148 that holds the pin lock. The front end 173 of the plunger 172 is positioned within the pin lock engagement hole 155. The front end 173 may reach a point as shown in this particular embodiment. When the front end 173 reaches a certain point, the front end 173 prevents the pin 150 from rotating further. In other embodiments, the pin 150 may have a different shape, including, for example, being rounded or flat.
[0046] When the pin 150 is screwed into the collar 140, the compressible body 174 of the pin lock 170 is compressed. This compression pulls back the plunger 172, thus allowing the pin 150 to continue moving downward through the collar 140. When the pin lock engagement hole 155 on the pin 150 aligns with the pin lock 170, the compressible body 174 of the pin lock 170 is depressurized. This causes the front end 173 of the plunger 172 to engage with the pin lock engagement hole 155 and be positioned inside it. This prevents the pin 150 from moving downward or upward through the collar 140, thus locking the pin 150 within the collar 140. The pin 150 is removed by any suitable tool using the tool engagement portion 152.
[0047] Once the pin 150 is removed, the teeth 130 can be removed from the adapter 120. In some embodiments, the pin 150 can then be reused in a further fastening assembly 102, but in other embodiments, the pin 150 is not reused. In some embodiments, the collar 140 is disposable and cannot be reused, but in other embodiments, the collar 140 can be reused in a further fastening assembly. In some embodiments, the pin 150 is reusable and the collar 140 is disposable.
[0048] Furthermore, Figure 11 shows how the collar 140 can be tapered according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. There is a longitudinal axis 186 of the pin 150. The continuous portion 190 of the collar 140 is tapered from bottom to top such that the end 145 facing the cavity of the collar 140 is wider than the end 143 facing outwards. The angle β of the tapering of the continuous portion 190 can be any suitable angle. For example, the angle β may be in the range of 1 to 20°.
[0049] The protrusion 146 may also be tapered from the end 145 facing the cavity of the collar 140 to the outward-facing end 143. The taper angle θ of the protrusion 146 can be any suitable angle. For example, the angle θ may be in the range of 0 to 11°. In some embodiments, the taper angle β of the continuous portion 190 is not the same as the taper angle θ of the protrusion 146. The continuous portion 190 may have a larger taper angle than the protrusion 146 (and therefore, angle β is greater than angle θ). However, in other embodiments, angle β may be less than or equal to angle θ.
[0050] Furthermore, the continuous portion 190 may have a height 191, and the protrusion 146 may have a height 192. In some embodiments, the height 191 of the continuous portion 190 may be smaller than the height 192 of the protrusion 146. In other embodiments, the heights 191 and 192 may be the same. In other embodiments, the height 191 of the continuous portion 191 may be larger than the height 192 of the protrusion 146.
[0051] When the collar 140 is inserted into the opening 136 of the teeth 130, the tapering prevents the collar 140 from pushing out of the other side of the opening 136. The tapering, specifically the tapering of the continuous portion 190, also stabilizes the collar 140 by preventing rotation of the collar. The opening 136 of the teeth 130 biases the pin 150 forward so that its front surface 159 presses against the front surface 129 of the front opening 127 of the adapter 120. When this occurs, the reaction force presses the continuous portion 190 of the collar 140 along the opposite side of the opening 136. The tapering of the continuous portion 190 distributes the load, prevents the collar 140 from rotating, and stabilizes the fastening assembly 102 and the teeth-adapter assembly during use.
[0052] The assembly of the system can be achieved as described herein. In some implementations, the collar 140 is attached to the opening 136 of the wear member, and in the illustrated exemplary implementation, to the tooth 130. The collar 140 can be inserted from the cavity of the tooth 130 into the inside of the tooth 130 and into the opening 136, as shown in Figures 9 and 10. The side walls of the opening 136 can compress the collar lock 160 on the collar 140 as the collar 140 slides into place. When the upper surface 143 of the collar 140 reaches a fully seated position in contact with or nearly in contact with the shoulder 184 of the opening 136, the collar lock 160 snaps into place in the recess 138 that holds the collar lock in the opening 136. It should be understood that the collar lock 160 can be provided within the opening 136 and the pocket 138 can be formed within the collar 140. When snapped into place, the collar lock 260 extends across the interface between the outer surface of the collar 130 and the side wall of the opening 136 of the tooth 130, holding the collar 140 within the opening 136. This process of attaching the collar 140 to the tooth may be performed when the tooth is mounted to the adapter, or at any time, such as before the tooth is shipped. In this regard, the collar 140, including the collar lock 160 and pin lock 170, may be assembled with the tooth at the same time as the tooth is manufactured.
[0053] Next, the teeth 130 may slide on the adapter 120 to the position shown in Figure 3. In this configuration, the opening 127 of the nose and the hole 141 of the collar 130 are aligned along a common axis. The pin 150 is then introduced into the hole 141 and screwed into the hole 141 along with the central axis 194 of the pin 150 which is aligned with the common axis of the hole, and the end 157 of the pin 150 is advanced into the opening of the adapter 120.
[0054] Initially, the end 157 of the pin 150 extends into the opening 136 of the adapter 120 before the threads 154 of the pin 150 engage with the threads 144 of the collar 130. However, the pin 150 does not yet have to be in contact with the adapter 120. As the pin 150 is rotatably screwed into the collar 140, the end 157 advances further into the opening 127 of the adapter 120. As described herein, the pin 150 is tapered, and the angle of the opening 127 in the adapter 120 may be angled to distribute the load along the pin 150. The pin 150 may be rotated until the pin 150 is fully seated in the collar 140, the shaft portion 193 extends into the opening 127, and the pin lock 170 engages with the recess 155 of the pin 150.
[0055] As can be understood, the interference caused by pin 150 prevents the wear member from detaching from adapter 120 in response to a force that would otherwise tend to pull the wear member forward relative to the nose.
[0056] Figures 13-15 show further examples of collar and pin fastening assemblies, including collars, collar locks, pins, and pin locks, for use in the ground engagement assembly 100 according to the present disclosure. Figures 13-15 show modifications of the embodiments described above. Figures 13-15 show an example of a fastening assembly 202. For example, Figure 13 shows a perspective view of a fastening assembly 202 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 14 shows a plan view of the fastening assembly 202 shown in Figure 13. Figure 15 shows a longitudinal section of a ground engagement assembly according to an example incorporating the principles described herein. Fastening assembly 202 has many similarities to fastening assembly 102, and some similar features are not repeated in the description of fastening assembly 202 to avoid redundancy. Rather, the description of fastening assembly 202 will mainly relate to additional or different features of fastening assembly 202 compared to fastening assembly 102. Common to the fastening assembly 102, the fastening assembly 202 is used to fasten the teeth 230 (Figure 15) or other wear members to the adapter 220 (including the adapter, intermediate adapter, or nose) or nose of the support structure 104, as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3.
[0057] In some embodiments, the collar 240 is a variation of the collar 140 described above. The collar 240 includes a surrounding arc-shaped or rounded continuous portion 290, a surrounding convex portion 246 (or discontinuous portion), and a surrounding flat portion 296. The flat portion 296 can improve the stability of the pin body. The convex portion 246 extends beyond the continuous portion 290, thereby making the thickness of the convex portion 246 greater than the thickness of the continuous portion 290 and greater than the thickness of the flat portion 296. In some embodiments, the flat portion 296 is positioned on the opposite side of the collar 240 as a convex portion 246. The flat portion 296 may also be positioned adjacent to the convex portion 246. When the flat portion 296 is positioned adjacent to the convex portion 246, the collar 240 may have only one continuous portion 290. In some embodiments, the collar 240 may have two or more flat portions 296. For example, there may be two or more flat sections, and the flat section 296 is not necessarily located on the opposite side of the convex section 246.
[0058] In some embodiments, the entire width of the flat portion 296 is not necessarily equal across the outer surface of the collar 240. For example, the flat portion 296 may be tapered across the outer surface of the collar 240 such that the flat portion 296 is wider at one longitudinal edge of the collar 240 than at the other longitudinal edge. In some embodiments, the tapering of the flat portion 296 across the outer surface of the collar 240 occurs at an angle different from the angles shown in Figures 13 and 14. For example, the tapering may occur more gradually, thereby increasing the area of the flat portion 296. Alternatively, the tapering may be formed at a sharper angle, thereby reducing the total area of the flat portion 296.
[0059] The area of the flat portion 296 extending across the collar 240 is not limited to a tapered shape. In some embodiments, the area of the flat portion 296 may be irregular or non-uniform. For example, the boundary of the flat portion 296 may vary in shape across the outer surface of the collar 240, not being tapered. The flat portion 296 does not have to extend across the entire surface of the collar 240, or the boundary of the flat portion 296 may be particularly curved among other irregular features. In some embodiments, the flat portion 296 may be the same across the outer surface of the collar 240. For example, the flat portion 296 may have a uniform width across the collar 240. Increasing the width and surface area of the flat portion 296 can increase the stability of the pin body, regardless of whether the shape of the flat portion 296 is regular or irregular.
[0060] In some embodiments, the collar lock 260 is a variation of the collar lock 160 described above. The collar lock 260 protrudes from the outside of the collar lock 240. The collar lock 260 has a head 264 and a compressible base 262. In some embodiments, the shape of the head 264 is trapezoidal, as shown in Figure 15. For example, the head 264 has a height that varies over its entire cross-section. In some embodiments, the top of the head 264 includes a flat surface and an inclined surface. In some embodiments, the inclined surface may be inclined toward the head of the pin 250. The inclined surface on the top of the head 264 of the collar lock 260 may help to facilitate decompression of the collar lock 260 when the collar 240 is inserted into a tooth or other member. Some parts of the head 264, for example, the part including the inclined surface, may be rounded. Other parts of the head 264, for example, the part of the head 264 having a flat surface, may be square. The squared portion of the head 264, which has a flat surface, may help ensure that the collar 240 remains fixed to the tooth after insertion and after the compressible base 262 has been depressurized.
[0061] The shape of the color lock 260 is not limited to the trapezoidal shape shown in Figures 13-15. Alternatively, the shape of the color lock 260 is at least the elliptical shape shown in Figures 4, 5, and 7. Other trapezoidal shapes are also possible. Furthermore, the shape may be spherical, cubic, rectangular, pyramidal, pentagonal, or any other shape. The shapes of the color locks 160 and 260 do not need to be regular or symmetrical. For example, the color lock may be irregular and asymmetrical.
[0062] In some embodiments, the collar lock engagement hole 238 is a variation of the collar lock engagement hole 138 described above. The opening 236 of the teeth 230 includes two collar lock engagement holes 238. The collar lock engagement holes 238 are formed to receive the head 264 of the collar lock 260. The shape of the collar lock engagement holes 238 may vary depending on the shape and orientation of the collar lock 260. The head 264 of the collar lock 260 engages with the collar lock engagement hole 238. When the collar 240 is pushed into the opening 236, the surface of the opening 236 presses against the head 264 of the collar lock 260, and the collar lock 260 compresses the compressible base 262 of the collar lock 260. As the collar lock 260 moves over the collar lock engagement hole 238, the compressible base 264 decompresses back to its original shape. Next, the head 264 of the collar lock 260 is positioned within the collar lock engagement hole 238, locking the collar 240 onto the tooth 230. As shown in Figure 15, the depth of the collar lock engagement hole 238 increases toward the interior of the tooth 230, forming a slope or taper. Unlike the collar lock engagement hole 138, the collar lock engagement hole 238 tapers only on one side toward the exterior of the tooth 230. Since the collar lock engagement hole 238 abruptly stops on the side closest to the interior of the tooth 230, the collar lock 260 with its depressurized base 262 is further prevented from slipping out of the collar lock engagement hole 238. In Figure 15, the tooth 230 is received or fixed to the adapter 220 or the nose 110 (Figure 2).
[0063] The orientation of the collar lock 260 is not limited to the orientations of the collar lock 260 shown in Figures 13-15 and the collar lock 160 shown in Figures 4, 5, and 7. For example, the collar locks 160 and 260 may be oriented in any direction. As shown in Figures 13-15, the collar lock 260 is oriented such that the longest dimension of the head 264 is parallel to the longitudinal edge of the collar 240. This differs from the orientation of the collar lock 160 shown in Figures 4, 5, and 7, where the longest dimension of the head 164 is perpendicular to the longitudinal edge of the collar 140, or otherwise lateral. The collar lock 260 can be oriented in any direction relative to the collar. The orientation of the collar locks 160 and 260 may help in inserting the collar 240 into the tooth and in keeping the collar locked in the tooth opening after insertion. The orientation and shape of the collar lock 260 affect the force required to insert the collar lock 260 into the collar 240.
[0064] In some embodiments, the pin lock 270 is a variation of the pin lock 170 described above. The pin lock 270 locks the pin 250 into the collar 240. The collar 240 has a recess 248 formed to hold the pin lock, which is fitted into the pin lock 270. As shown in the figure, the pin lock 270 may have an irregular shape. The shape of the pin lock 270 may be hourglass-shaped or part of an hourglass-shaped. For example, the pin lock 270 may have a width that changes in the portion radially outward from the pin 250. The irregular shape of the pin lock 270 may form notches and / or other recess shapes into which the collar 240 extends. The notches and / or recesses of the pin lock 270 can help keep the pin 250 locked while the rotatable pin 250 applies force to the plunger attached to the pin lock 270. The shape of the pin lock 270 can help resist natural forces applied to the pin lock 270 due to the rotatability of the pin 250. The pin lock 270 is not limited to irregular shapes, as shown in Figures 13-15. Regular shapes are also conceivable and usable. Regular shapes can offer similar advantages; for example, a triangular pin lock 270 may increase in width radially outward from the pin lock 250. This increase in width of the pin lock 270 at a point further away from the pin lock 250 prevents the pin lock 270 from slipping out of the recess 248 that holds the pin lock. Figures 13 and 14 also show reference indicators 298A and 298B on the collar 240 and pin 250, respectively. These are visual indicators for the user when the front end 173 of the plunger 172 is aligned with the pin lock engagement hole 155 on the pin 150 (see Figure 12), or they may indicate other alignment information. The indicators may be formed on the collar 240 and pin 250, or added as surface markings or marks.
