Detailed Description of the Invention
[0001] [Background] When repairing or manufacturing delicate devices such as parts for eyeglasses, watches, or accessories, picking up small screws can be a frustrating and difficult task. Small-diameter screw systems used in spinal surgery, cranial plates, and oral and maxillofacial surgery also present similar challenges. These screws are often very tiny, sometimes only a few millimeters in length, making them nearly invisible to the naked eye. Their extremely small size and lightweight nature make them prone to being lost or easily dropped, which increases the complexity of the work. Furthermore, screws are often made of materials such as stainless steel or brass that can be highly reflective, so the screws may blend into the background or be camouflaged on the surface they fall onto. These optical illusions make finding the screws a task that requires patience and sharp observation skills.
[0002] In addition, small screws tend to roll or bounce when dropped, which further complicates the retrieval process. Their small size also makes them difficult to grasp using conventional tools or fingers, requiring the use of specialized tweezers and magnifying glasses to improve visibility and precision. The repair or manufacture of small devices such as parts for eyeglasses, watches, or accessories requires a steady hand, meticulous attention to detail, and inexhaustible patience. The same level of skill required for small-diameter screw systems is also required for spinal surgery, cranial plates, and oral and maxillofacial surgical systems. The search for and placement of these tiny screws can be a time-consuming and delicate task that tests the dexterity and patience of the general public, as well as even the most experienced repair technicians and operating room specialists. In addition, the placement of micro screws can also be a challenge in the manufacturing process of the aforementioned screw systems.
[0003] Accordingly, there exists a demand for an efficient and effective fastener organizing and retrieval tool. [Summary] In one embodiment, a screw-encapsulation system is disclosed, the system comprising a container, a first screw, an adhesive, and a cover. The container comprises a first surface defining a plurality of openings, including a first opening; a second surface opposite and spaced apart from the first surface; a plurality of recesses, including a first recess extending from the first opening of the container toward the second surface, the first recess being formed to accommodate a screw therein; and a counterbore located at the distal end of the first recess. The first screw is removably disposed within the first recess. The first screw comprises a head located at a first end and having a drive unit; a shank coupled to the head and defining the shoulder of the screw head, the shank having the shoulder of the screw head positioned on the upper surface of the counterbore when the shank is positioned in the internal recess of the counterbore; thread grooves located on part of the shank; and a tip on a second end. The adhesive is disposed within the drive unit of the first screw and is configured to temporarily bond two objects. The cover is removably bonded to the first surface of the container such that the first screw is held in the first recess while the cover is bonded to the first surface.

Various purposes, aspects, features, and advantages of this disclosure will become clearer and better understood by referring to the detailed description together with the accompanying drawings. Throughout the drawings, the same reference numerals indicate corresponding elements. In the drawings, the same reference numerals generally indicate identical elements, functionally similar elements, and / or structurally similar elements. [Modes for carrying out the invention]
[0018] [Detailed explanation] The drawings provide an overview of screw collection and container systems in various embodiments.
[0019] In one embodiment, the assembly and repair of small devices (e.g., watches and eyeglass frames) is difficult due to the presence of small screws and screw holes. These screws are typically on a scale of less than 1 mm, making them difficult for humans to manipulate and align. Existing tools fail to provide a robust and reliable connection between the tool and the screw. For example, a screwdriver with a magnet at its tip may hold the screw near the magnetic tip, but the magnet often shifts to the side of the tip rather than remaining centered with the screw's drive mechanism. Thus, the systems, methods, and apparatus disclosed herein offer improvements to this technical problem. The systems, methods, and apparatus disclosed herein provide reliable, consistent, repeatable, and intuitive screw collection. The systems, methods, and apparatus disclosed herein further provide more efficient methods for assembling and repairing small devices using these tiny fasteners.
[0020] In another aspect, the retrieval and placement of fasteners (e.g., small screws) in a surgical setting is difficult due to (i) the small size of the fastener and its corresponding hole, and (ii) the sterile environment and the specific arrangement of components within that sterile environment. Existing tools may provide a variety of fasteners for the surgeon to choose from, but they do not address the issues of alignment and secure contact between the fastener and the tool. The systems, methods, and apparatus disclosed herein provide reliable, consistent, reproducible, and intuitive retrieval and use of surgical fasteners. The systems, methods, and apparatus disclosed herein provide a more efficient method for retrieving small fasteners from a container and placing them in a desired position.
[0021] While screws are intended as an example applicable to the systems, methods, and apparatus disclosed herein, this disclosure is not limited to screws. In some embodiments, the systems, methods, and apparatus of this disclosure are applicable to a variety of fasteners (e.g., nuts, bolts, nails, staples, buttons, etc.). In some embodiments, the systems, methods, and apparatus of this disclosure are applicable to a variety of items considered small in scale for human handling (e.g., building materials, craft materials, pharmaceutical materials, cooking materials, etc.).
[0022] [Embodimentary device #1] Figures 1A-1C show a screw-filled system 100 according to one embodiment. Specifically, Figure 1A shows a cross-sectional view along line AA in Figure 1B, and Figure 1B shows a top view without a cover. Figure 1C shows a cross-sectional view of Figure 1A with a screwdriver 180. The screw-filled system 100 in Figures 1A-1C includes a container 102, a first screw 130, a second screw 150, an adhesive substance 160, and a cover 170.
[0023] The container 102 includes a first surface 104 and a second surface 106 that faces the first surface 104 and is spaced apart therefrom. The first surface 104 defines a plurality of openings including a first opening 108 and a second opening 112. The container 102 further includes a plurality of recesses extending from each opening in the first surface 104 toward the second surface 106. Each recess is sized to receive a screw and / or a screwdriver (e.g., the screwdriver 180 in Figure 1C) therein. For example, the diameter of the first opening may be larger than the diameter of the screwdriver shaft. In other embodiments, the diameter of the first opening is 0 mm to 1 mm larger than the diameter of the screwdriver shaft (e.g., to prevent the screwdriver tip from being misaligned with the screw drive portion). Each recess includes a counterbore disposed at the distal end of the recess.
[0024] The plurality of recesses includes a first recess 110 extending from the first opening 108 and a second recess 114 extending from the second opening 112. The first recess 110 includes a first counterbore 116 disposed at the distal end 118 of the first recess 110. The first counterbore 116 includes an inner recess 120 defined by the first counterbore 116, and the inner recess 120 has a smaller diameter than the portion of the proximal end 122 of the first recess 110. Accordingly, the first counterbore 116 defines an upper surface 124.
[0025] As shown in the figure, the container 102 includes, on the first surface 104, six openings with six corresponding recesses. Each of the openings and the corresponding recesses of the container 102 of the system 100 is identical in size and configuration. However, in other embodiments, various sizes, configurations, numbers, and arrangements of the openings and corresponding recesses are contemplated. For example, in some embodiments, the container may define 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, or more openings and corresponding recesses. In other embodiments, one opening and its corresponding recess may have a larger or smaller size (e.g., diameter, depth, etc.) than adjacent openings and their corresponding recesses. In other embodiments, the sizes and dimensions of the counterbores of adjacent recesses may differ. In other embodiments, some of the recesses do not include a counterbore, and instead include only cylindrical or partially cylindrical recesses. In other embodiments, at least a portion of the recesses includes a frustoconical shape (e.g., a countersink or a chamfered edge on the proximal end of the recess).
[0026] The container 102 may be constructed of a transparent material (e.g., polycarbonate, acrylic, polyvinyl chloride, cycloolefin copolymer, polypropylene, or other substantially transparent moldable materials). Such a transparent material allows a user to see the screws in the container, and to determine which recesses are empty and which recesses are occupied. In other embodiments, the container is constructed of an opaque material.
[0027] The container 102 includes a first screw 130 that is removably disposed in a first recess 110. The first screw 130 includes a head 136 located at the first end 132 of the screw. The head 136 defines a drive portion 138. The shank 140 is coupled to the head 136 and defines the shoulder 142 of the screw head. The shank 140 extends from the shoulder 142 of the screw head toward a second end 134 having a tip 146. The shank 140 includes multiple thread grooves 144 (e.g., one thread groove) in part of the shank 140. As shown in the figure, the shoulder 142 of the screw head is located on the upper surface 124 of the first counterbore 116, while the shank 140 is located within the inner recess 120 of the first counterbore 116.
[0028] Figures 1A and 1B further include a second screw 150 substantially similar to the first screw 130. The second screw 150 is positioned in the second recess 114 in a similar manner to the first screw 130 in the first recess 110. For clarity, the second screw 150 is shown without the adhesive material 160 on top. However, in the intended configuration, all screws in the system have adhesive material on top. In other configurations, some screws have adhesive material on top, while others do not.
[0029] The first screw 130 and the second screw 150 in Figures 1A and 1B are of the same size. However, in other embodiments, some screws may have different sizes, shapes, functions, or other dimensions than other screws. For example, in some embodiments, some screws may have a first shaft length, while others may have a second shaft length that is longer or shorter than the first shaft length. In other embodiments, the first screw may have a first drive shape (e.g., Phillips head), while the second screw may have a second drive shape (e.g., hexagonal socket or countersunk head).
[0030] The first screw 130 and the second screw 150 may have sizes and compositions suitable for specific devices or purposes. For example, in some embodiments, the first and second screws are connectable to and insertable into eyeglass frames, thereby forming an eyeglass repair kit. In some embodiments, the first and second screws are connectable to and insertable into jewelry pieces (e.g., watches), thereby forming a jewelry or watch repair kit. In some embodiments, the first and second screws are connectable to spinal surgery clamps and insertable into a patient's spine or spinal implant, thereby forming a spinal screw container system.
[0031] System 100 includes an adhesive material 160 positioned on the drive portion 138 of the first screw 130. For example, the adhesive material 160 is positioned on the first end portion 132 of the first screw 130, with a portion of the adhesive material 160 extending over the surface of the head 136 and a portion of the adhesive material 160 extending into the drive portion 138. The adhesive material 160 is configured to temporarily bond two objects so that when force is applied or twisted, one object can be removed from (i) the adhesive material and / or (ii) the second object. The adhesive material 160 is not intended to permanently bond two objects, although in other embodiments such a configuration is contemplated by the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the adhesive material is bone wax or consists of at least one of beeswax, isopropyl palmitate, and a wax softener. In some embodiments, the adhesive material is putty (e.g., sticky, viscous, or adhesive putty). In some embodiments, the adhesive material consists of at least one of an adhesive, water, a polymer (e.g., polyvinyl acetate), and borax. In some embodiments, the adhesive material is a thermosetting plastic or elastomer.
[0032] The cover 170 is removably bonded to the first surface 104 of the container 102. The cover 170 is a peelable plastic cover that can move from a closed configuration to an open configuration. In practice, the cover 170 prevents screws from falling out of the container 102 or being repositioned within recesses (for example, removing the shank 140 from the inner recess 120 of the counterbore 116). For example, the cover 170 holds the internal components of the system 200 in the correct place during transport and / or handling before the system 100 is used. The cover 170 is made of a transparent material (e.g., clear plastic). However, in other embodiments, the cover may not be transparent. While the cover 170 is coupled to the first surface 104 (i.e., in the closed configuration), each of the screws of the system 100 (e.g., the first screw 130 and the second screw 150) is held in its corresponding recess. When the cover 170 is pulled backward (i.e., moved from the closed configuration to the open configuration), each of the screws is exposed in its corresponding recess. In other embodiments, the cover is a hinged or sliding cover configured to move back and forth between the open and closed configurations (e.g., via a latch or clip).
[0033] The screwdriver 180 shown in Figure 1C has a shaft 182 and a tip 184. The shaft 182 has a diameter formed to fit into each of the multiple recesses of the container 102. The tip 184 is formed to engage with the drive part of a screw (for example, the drive part 138 of the first screw 130).
[0034] A method for picking up a screw using system 100 is disclosed. The container 102 is provided with screws pre-loaded in a plurality of recesses, each screw having an adhesive substance 160 located on the upper part adjacent to the drive unit. The screwdriver 180 is also provided with a shaft 182 and a tip 184 configured to engage with the drive unit of a screw (for example, the drive unit 138 of the first screw 130).
[0035] The cover 170 is removed from the container 102, exposing several recesses (including the first recess 110 and the second recess 114). The tip 184 of the screwdriver 180 is inserted into the first recess 110 until the tip 184 of the screwdriver 180 contacts the adhesive 160, deforming the adhesive 160, and the first screw 130 and the screwdriver 180 are temporarily bonded via the adhesive 160. The screwdriver 180 is then removed from the first recess 110 along with the first screw 130 attached to the tip 184.
[0036] Once the first screw 130 is coupled to the screwdriver 180, the first screw 130 can be easily and efficiently positioned in a desired location. For example, the first screw 130 can be inserted into a screw hole in eyeglasses, a screw hole in a watch, or a piece of other jewelry. In other embodiments, the first screw 130 may be an orthopedic screw, a spinal screw, or a screw for a skull plate, and can be inserted into a spinal implant or a screw hole in an anatomical feature for oral, maxillofacial, or other types of surgical procedures. After insertion, the first screw 130 is separated from the adhesive 160 and the screwdriver 180. For example, the separation step can be completed by withdrawing the screwdriver 180 from the drive unit 138 of the first screw 130 along the longitudinal axis of the first screw 130, or at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the first screw 130. In some embodiments, the separation step may be completed by twisting the screwdriver 180 so that a torsional force removes the adhesive 160 without moving the first screw 130 (for example, by pulling the screwdriver 180 out of the drive unit 138 without completely separating it from the adhesive 160). In some embodiments, the separation step may be completed by a combination of the above operations (for example, pulling at an angle and twisting).
[0037] [Example device #2] Figures 2A and 2B show a system 200 substantially similar to system 100 in Figures 1A-1C, except as noted below. Similar reference numbers between the two systems indicate similar elements. Specifically, Figure 2A shows a cross-sectional view along line AA in Figure 2B, and Figure 2B shows a top view without cover. System 200 includes a container 102 that defines a plurality of openings extending from a first surface 104 toward a second surface 106 to define a plurality of recesses. The plurality of recesses include a first recess 110 extending from a first opening 108. The first recess 110 includes a first counterbore 116. A first screw 130 is located within the first recess 110 and rests on the first counterbore 116.
[0038] The multiple recesses further include a second recess 212 extending from the second opening 210. The second recess 212 is sized to accommodate the shaft and tip of a screwdriver (e.g., screwdriver 180 in Figure 1C). The second opening 210 may have a diameter matching the diameter of the first opening 108, but the second recess 212 in Figures 2A-2B does not match the shape and dimensions of the first recess 110. Rather, the second recess 212 is a cylindrical hole without a counterbore. In other embodiments, the second recess may have a different shape (e.g., conical, frustoconical, or a shape including a counterbore matching the first recess). In other embodiments, the shape of the second opening may include a different shape (e.g., triangular, hexagonal, octagonal, etc.).
[0039] Rather than having the adhesive 160 on the top of the screw head, system 200 contains a larger deposit of adhesive 160. The second recess 212 contains a larger volume of adhesive 160 than the individual deposits on the screw in system 100. Therefore, the adhesive 160 in system 200 can be reused in small amounts. In some embodiments, a second, separate, adhesive repository (e.g., a replacement canister) is provided in system 200 for refilling the second recess 212 or for use separately from the second recess 212.
[0040] The cover 270 in system 200 is a hinged cover 270 coupled to the container 102 via a hinge 272. The cover 270 is movable between an open configuration and a closed configuration. System 200 can be closed and sealed, opened for use, and then repeatedly closed and sealed again. Similar to the cover 170 in system 100, the cover 270 may be made of a transparent material.
[0041] A method for picking up screws using the system 200 is disclosed. The container 102 of the system 200 is provided with screws pre-loaded in a plurality of recesses (for example, all but one of the recesses may have screws placed inside). A screwdriver (for example, the screwdriver 180 shown in Figure 1C) is also provided with a shaft 182 and a tip 184 configured to engage with a screw drive unit (for example, the drive unit 138 of the first screw 130).
[0042] The cover 270 is either hinged to the container 102 or rotates away from the container 102 to expose several recesses. Next, the tip 184 of the screwdriver 180 is inserted into the second recess 212 and strikes against a portion of the adhesive material 160 inside, deforming the adhesive material 160. The tip 184 of the screwdriver 180 is removed from the second recess 212 along with the portion of the adhesive material 160 that has adhered to it.
[0043] The tip 184 of the screwdriver 180, which has the adhesive substance 160, is inserted into the first recess 110 until the tip 184 contacts the drive portion 138 of the first screw 130. The first screw 130 and the screwdriver 180 are temporarily bonded together by the interposition of a portion of the adhesive substance 160. Subsequently, the tip 184 of the screwdriver 180 is removed from the first recess 110 along with the portion of the adhesive substance 160 and the first screw 130 attached to it.
[0044] When removed, the first screw 130 can be inserted into the desired position, similar to system 100. In contrast to system 100, system 200, which has a large deposit of adhesive 160, allows the user to control the amount of adhesive 160 used. For example, a larger amount of adhesive 160 may be used for larger screws, while a smaller amount may be used for smaller screws. Also, the production line can be streamlined for either system (i.e., having the advantage of applying the adhesive directly onto the screw and the advantage of providing only one recess filled with adhesive).
[0045] [Example System #3] Figures 3A, 3B, and 3C show a system 300 substantially similar to the system 200 of Figures 2A and 2B, except as noted below. Each of the multiple openings defined by the container 102 in system 300 has a smaller diameter than the multiple openings defined by the container 102 in system 200. As shown in the figures, the first opening 302 and the first recess 304 extending therefrom contain the first screw 130, except that the diameters of the first opening 302 and the first recess 304 approximate or are equal to the diameter of the head 136 of the first screw 130. In some embodiments, the diameters of the first opening 302 and the first recess 304 are 0 mm to 1 mm larger than the diameter of the head 136 of the first screw 130.
[0046] Furthermore, as shown in Figure 3C, the diameters of the first opening 302 and the first recess 304 also approximate or are equal to the diameter of the shaft 182 of the screwdriver 180. Similarly, the first counterbore 306 of the first recess 304 is similar to the first counterbore 116 of the system 200, but the diameter of the inner recess 308 of the first counterbore 306 is smaller. As shown in the figure, the diameter of the inner recess 308 of the first counterbore 306 approximates or is equal to the diameter of the shank 140 of the first screw 130.
[0047] System 300, having dimensions similar to those described herein, minimizes misalignment, rattle, and / or lateral movement of various elements during the engagement process. For example, when the screwdriver 180 engages with the first screw 130, lateral misalignment is minimized or eliminated. The longitudinal axes of the screwdriver 180 and the first screw 130 are configured to align perfectly or nearly perfectly each time. Furthermore, due to the precise dimensions, it is unlikely that the first screw 130 will deviate from its longitudinal alignment with the first recess 304 and the first counterbore 306. Thus, System 300 provides a user-friendly experience with minimal operational errors.
[0048] System 300 further includes alternative embodiments of the cover 370 (not shown in Figure 3C). The cover 370 slides into a groove 372 fixed to the first surface 104 via a side wall 374. The cover 370 is configured to slide back and forth in the direction indicated by arrow "C" in Figures 3A and 3B. While the cover is kept parallel to the surface 104, the cover 370 can slide along the groove 372 to fully expose the embedded screws. Similarly, the cover 370 can slide along the groove 372 to hold embedded screws (for example, for storage). As with the container 102, the cover 370 is made of a transparent material so that the number of screws remaining in multiple recesses can be easily determined by the user.
[0049] [Configuration of a specific embodiment] The structure and arrangement of the systems and methods shown in the various embodiments are illustrative only. While only a few embodiments are described in detail in this disclosure, many modifications are possible (e.g., variations in the size, dimensions, structure, shape, and proportions of various elements, parameter values, mounting methods, material use, color, orientation, etc.). For example, the positions of elements may be reversed or changed, and the nature or number of individual elements or positions may be altered or changed. Therefore, all such modifications are intended to be included within the scope of this disclosure. The order or sequence of any process or method steps may be changed or reordered according to alternative embodiments. Other substitutions, modifications, changes, and omissions may be made in the design, operating conditions, and arrangement of embodiments without departing from the scope of this disclosure.
