AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current treatments for secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) are limited, and the role of intestinal bacteria in the progression of the disease has not been fully analyzed, necessitating a method for diagnosing SPMS and screening therapeutic agents.

Method used

Identifying Tyzzerella nexilis as a bacterial species with increased abundance in SPMS patients, using its relative abundance to diagnose SPMS and evaluating therapeutic agents by determining their ability to inactivate or reduce Tyzzerella nexilis, potentially through endolysin derived from the bacterium.

Benefits of technology

Provides a method for diagnosing SPMS and screening therapeutic agents that can potentially suppress neuroinflammation by targeting Tyzzerella nexilis, offering a novel approach to treating the disease.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for assisting the diagnosis of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, the method including: a step in which the relative abundance of Tyzzerella nexilis in a fecal sample collected from a subject is measured; and a step in which, when the relative abundance of Tyzzerella nexilis is larger than that in a fecal sample collected from a normal person, it is determined that the subject has been affected with or is potentially affected with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. The Tyzzerella nexilis is a bacterium that carries genome DNA having a 97% or higher average nucleotide identity with the nucleotide sequence for the genome DNA represented by SEQ ID NO: 1.
