Abstract

1. Technical Field: Civil Engineering, Drainage Works 2. Challenges - Discontinuation of Hume Pipe Construction: Replace with other materials by 2030 (70%). Supplement materials and construction methods as announced by the government. Prioritize economic benefits through the continuous and ongoing construction of Hume Pipes. While there are various causes of sinkholes, the installation of sewer culverts is also a contributing factor. The cause involves the application of a primary rubber ring and a secondary mortar layer at the joints after construction; however, slow leakage occurs due to the rubber ring detaching or twisting during the process. Although the secondary mortar is applied, it fails to adhere smoothly to the pipe connection. Additionally, the mortar's adhesion is weak, causing the moisture to dry out. Instead of solidifying, the mortar detaches, resulting in leakage. 3. Means of Solution - Leakage Remediation through Modification of Hume Pipe Manufacturing Method: 1st Urethane Injection, 2nd Protective Mortar. Urethane injection is performed using a dry-applied foaming agent, injecting up to 10cm from the connection point to the end of the Hume pipe. After the first stage of water supply is shut off and the urethane is cleaned up, the 2nd mortar is applied. Currently, mortar is attached to the connection surface of the Hume pipes; however, the modified construction involves applying mortar within a 5cm width at the same depth as the internal and external gaps. Since this internal insertion prevents mortar detachment, it is deemed appropriate that complete leakage prevention is achieved, making it suitable for long-term use. 4. Effects - Manufactured with a concrete length of 2.25m (left 0.1m, right 0.15m), totaling 2.5m, it is lighter than standard culvert pipes, making installation easier. Furthermore, by completely blocking leaks and preventing sinkholes, it offers significant long-term benefits in terms of safety and economy.
