Technology Field
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol-generating system and a method for assembling such an aerosol-generating system. Background Technology
[0002] Currently, various types of aerosol generation systems are commercially available. These systems can heat an aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature at which one or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate volatilize, without burning the aerosol-forming substrate. Other systems, often referred to as atomizers, typically generate aerosols by mechanical action, such as by vibrating elements like a mesh or a membrane with multiple holes. Vibrating atomizers use the deformation or vibration of these vibrating elements to push liquid through them.
[0003] In a conventional vibrating mesh atomizer, a piezoelectric element in contact with the mesh is used to generate vibrations in the mesh. The mesh is adjacent to and in direct contact with a liquid aerosol forming substrate. The mesh deformation of the vibrating mesh creates a pressure field within the liquid, pumping and filling the holes with liquid. The volume of liquid displaced through the holes breaks down into droplets, which are ejected through the holes of the mesh as an aerosol droplet distribution and then transported to the user through an airflow channel.
[0004] Typically, such a system includes a replaceable mouthpiece, an atomizer module containing a vibrating element, and a liquid reservoir for storing a liquid aerosol-forming material. The liquid reservoir may be contained within a cartridge. The positioning of the individual components relative to one another is critical for providing proper liquid flow and aerosol generation during use. Additionally, it is desirable to be able to access the individual components of such a system, for example, to replace the individual components.
[0005] It would be desirable to have an aerosol generating system that provides easy replacement of the cartridge. It would be desirable to have an aerosol generating system that has improved liquid flow during use. It would be desirable to have an aerosol generating system that has improved accessibility to the individual components of the system. It would be desirable to have an aerosol generating system that enables cleaning of the replaceable mouthpiece.
[0006] According to one embodiment of the present invention, an aerosol generating system is provided, comprising a main body, a replaceable mouthpiece, an atomizer module, and a replaceable cartridge. When the aerosol generating system is assembled, the atomizer module may be positioned laterally to the aerosol generating system between the replaceable mouthpiece and the replaceable cartridge.

[0008] According to one embodiment of the present invention, an aerosol generating system is provided, comprising a main body, a replaceable mouthpiece, an atomizer module, and a replaceable cartridge. When the aerosol generating system is assembled, the atomizer module is positioned laterally to the aerosol generating system between the replaceable mouthpiece and the replaceable cartridge. The replaceable cartridge can be connected to the atomizer module from two sides, preferably from two sides perpendicular to each other.

By providing an aerosol generating system comprising an atomizer module positioned laterally between a replaceable mouthpiece and a replaceable cartridge, cleaning of the replaceable mouthpiece may be possible.
[0010] As used herein, the term "aerosol generating system" is used to describe a system that generates an aerosol by interacting with an aerosol-forming substrate. Preferably, the aerosol generating system is a smoking system that generates an aerosol that can be inhaled directly into the user's lungs through the user's mouth by interacting with an aerosol-forming substrate.
[0011] The aerosol generating system may include a longitudinal axis. The longitudinal axis may extend along a longitudinal extension of the aerosol generating system. The longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system may extend between the proximal end of the aerosol generating system and the distal end of the aerosol generating system. The lateral direction may be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system.
[0012] As used herein, the term 'proximal' refers to the user or mouse end of the aerosol generating system or a part thereof, and the term 'distal' refers to the end opposite to the proximal end. As used herein, the term 'lateral' refers to the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system.
[0013] The aerosol generating system may include a plurality of lateral axes perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system. The atomizer module may be located on a lateral axis of the aerosol generating system that penetrates a replaceable mouthpiece and a replaceable cartridge. The lateral center axis of the cartridge, which is also a lateral axis of the aerosol generating system, may penetrate the atomizer module and the replaceable mouthpiece.
[0014] The atomizer module can be fitted between the replaceable mouthpiece and the replaceable cartridge. The replaceable cartridge can be reversibly inserted from the lateral side of the aerosol generation system. The replaceable cartridge can be reversibly removed from the aerosol generation system without the need to remove or move the atomizer module within the aerosol generation system. The replaceable cartridge can be reversibly removed from the aerosol generation system without the need to remove or move the replaceable mouthpiece within the aerosol generation system. The replaceable cartridge can be accessed from the lateral side of the aerosol generation system. The replaceable cartridge can be reversibly connected to the aerosol generation system.
[0015] The atomizer module may include an electrical connection part. The electrical connection part may provide an electrical connection to the main body. The atomizer module may include a vibrating transducer.
[0016] As used herein, the term "vibratory transducer" is used to refer to a device configured to convert energy from an initial form to a different form, wherein the different form includes or is composed of a vibratory output.
[0017] The atomizer module may include a piezoelectric actuator. The atomizer module may include a vibration element. The vibration element may be one of a vibration mesh, a vibration membrane, or a vibration plate.
[0018] Piezoelectric actuators are desirable because they are an energy-efficient and lightweight means of providing a vibration output from an electrical input. Piezoelectric actuators have high energy conversion efficiency from electric force to mechanical force. In addition, piezoelectric actuators are available in a wide variety of materials and shapes. For a piezoelectric actuator, inputting an electric driving signal into the piezoelectric actuator results in a mechanical output in the form of vibration. The vibration output from the transducer induces vibration of the vibrating membrane. Therefore, the use of a piezoelectric actuator within or as a transducer provides an energy-efficient means of inducing vibration of the membrane. However, as an alternative to the use of piezoelectric actuators, actuator(s) comprising one or more of electromagnetic elements, magnetostrictive elements, or electrostrictive elements may also be used in the vibrating transducer.
[0019] The atomizer module may include a vibrating transducer holder configured to support a vibrating transducer. The atomizer module may include a vibrating element. The vibrating transducer may be operably coupled to a vibrating membrane to vibrate the vibrating membrane substantially axially when in use.
[0020] The vibrating transducer holder may be overmolded around the vibrating transducer. The vibrating transducer may be integrated into the vibrating transducer holder. The vibrating transducer holder may comprise a flexible material. The flexible material of the vibrating transducer holder may have a hardness in the range of 5 Shore A to 120 Shore A, preferably 20 Shore A to 40 Shore A. The vibrating transducer holder may comprise a rubber material. By providing a vibrating transducer holder made of a rubber material, the vibrating element may be held in place without significantly damping the vibration of the vibrating element. By providing a vibrating transducer holder made of a rubber material, a seal between the atomizer module and the replaceable mouthpiece may be provided. By providing a vibrating transducer holder made of a rubber material, axial tolerances of the components of the aerosol generation system may be compensated.
[0021] As used herein, "Shore A" refers to the Shore A hardness scale. The Shore A hardness value of a material sample is determined by the degree to which the foot of the durometer penetrates into the sample.
[0022] The vibrating transducer holder may be axisymmetric. By providing the vibrating transducer holder axisymmetrically, orientation is not required during assembly. The vibrating transducer holder may be washer-shaped. The thickness of the vibrating transducer holder may be 1 mm to 10 mm, preferably 2 mm to 5 mm, more preferably about 3 mm.
[0023] The vibrating transducer may be washer-shaped. The vibrating transducer may include a vibrating element.
[0024] A vibration element may be placed on a vibration plane, and when the aerosol generation system is assembled, the vibration plane may not be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generation system. The vibration plane may be parallel to or include the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generation system. The vibration plane may not be horizontal with respect to the aerosol generation system. The vibration plane may be perpendicular to the aerosol generation system.
[0025] The vibrating element may have a flat shape. The vibrating element may have a disc shape. The vibrating membrane may be formed from any suitable material. For example and without limitation, the vibrating membrane may be formed from a polymer material, thereby providing the advantages of reduced mass and inertia. However, the vibrating membrane may be formed from any other suitable material, such as metal, semiconductor, dielectric, or ceramic material. The material may be crystalline or amorphous. The vibrating membrane may be a composite of two or more different materials. For example and without limitation, examples of membrane materials include stainless steel, alloys such as palladium, silver, Ni-Co or Ni-Pd, polyimide and polyamide, ceramics based on silicon, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, aluminum nitride, silicon oxide, aluminum oxide or barium titanate, or combinations thereof such as layered membranes consisting of layers of silicon and silicon nitride or silicon oxide or metal. The selection of material(s) used for the vibrating membrane may be influenced by the specific liquid aerosol-forming substrate(s) intended to be used with the atomizer module and aerosolized. For example, it is desirable to select a material for the vibrating membrane that does not chemically react or decompose as a result of contact with the selected liquid aerosol-forming substrate. As merely an example, the vibrating membrane may be formed from any of palladium, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, polyimide, polyamide, silicon, or aluminum nitride.
[0026] Advantageously, the vibrating membrane may include an aerosol generating zone, and the aerosol generating zone is provided with a plurality of nozzles for the passage of a liquid aerosol forming substrate. The plurality of nozzles allows a dispersion of aerosol droplets to be discharged from the nozzles when the liquid aerosol forming substrate is supplied to one surface of the vibrating membrane. The plurality of nozzles may have a diameter in the range of 1 micrometer to 20 micrometers. As used herein, the term “nozzle” is used to refer to an aperture, hole, or bore through the membrane that provides a passage for the liquid aerosol forming substrate to move through the membrane. For example and without limitation, during the use of the atomizer module, the liquid aerosol forming substrate may come into contact with a first side of the vibrating membrane. Vibration of the vibrating membrane induced by the vibrating output of the transducer may cause the liquid substrate to be pushed through the nozzles to be discharged as an aerosol droplet forming pattern from a second (opposite) side of the membrane. The nozzles can be individually sized and arranged relative to each other to provide a predetermined aerosol droplet formation pattern.
[0027] The aerosol generation system may not include a heating element. The aerosol generation system may include a heating element. The heating element may be located upstream of the vibrating element. By doing so, the viscosity of the liquid aerosol forming substrate can be reduced. Aerosol generation can be performed at ambient temperature. Aerosol generation may not require high temperatures.
[0028] When the aerosol generating system is assembled, the aerosol generating system provides a liquid flow from a replaceable cartridge to an atomizer module in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system. The liquid flow can be provided from the replaceable cartridge to the atomizer module in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system. The direction of the liquid flow from the replaceable cartridge to the atomizer module may be approximately 90 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system. The direction of the liquid flow from the replaceable cartridge to the atomizer module may be 85 to 95 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating system. During use, the aerosol generating system can be maintained in a horizontal position by the user. By maintaining the aerosol generating system horizontally and providing a liquid flow in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the liquid flow can be facilitated by gravity.
