Abstract
Description
Technology Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery pack assembly and a battery rack assembly equipped with the same. Background Technology
[0003] Generally, rechargeable batteries are widely used as energy sources for mobile devices. They are also attracting attention as power sources for electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Furthermore, rechargeable batteries are applied to devices that store and supply energy in conjunction with the power grid, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
[0004] The basic unit of a secondary battery is the battery cell. While small mobile devices use one or two battery cells, medium to large devices such as automobiles and energy storage systems utilize battery module assemblies. A battery module assembly achieves high output and large capacity by electrically connecting multiple battery cells. Multiple battery module assemblies can be assembled and electrically connected to each other to form a battery pack assembly. Multiple battery pack assemblies can be mounted on a rack to create a battery rack assembly for an energy storage system. The problem to be solved
[0006] As determined by the inventors, components such as electrode terminals for electrical connections between battery module assemblies occupy a significant amount of space. The paths for electrical connections are also complex. Consequently, the power density of the battery pack assembly is low, and the electrical resistance is high.
[0007] One objective of the present invention, devised in consideration of these problems, is to provide a battery pack assembly and a battery rack assembly equipped with the same, which can prevent a decrease in the power density of the battery pack assembly due to a structure for electrical connection between battery module assemblies.

[0042] FIG. 1 is a schematic exploded perspective view showing a battery pack assembly according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0043] Referring to the drawing, the battery pack assembly (100) may have a first battery module assembly (110), a second battery module assembly (120), a base plate (130), a side cover (140), a front cover (150), a top cover (160), and a module busbar (190). When a plurality of battery pack assemblies (100) are stacked and installed on a rack, and a control unit and a cooling unit, etc. are additionally installed on the rack, an energy storage system (BESS) can be completed. Alternatively, the battery pack assembly (100) may be used for purposes such as driving an electric motor of a vehicle.
[0044] A second battery module assembly (120) may be positioned on top of a first battery module assembly (110). The battery module assemblies (110 and 120) may be stacked along a stacking direction, for example, in this embodiment, a vertical direction (V). The vertical direction (V) may be a direction that perpendicularly penetrates the main surfaces of the battery module assemblies (110 and 120). The battery module assemblies (110 and 120) may be electrically connected to each other by a busbar or a cable. In an alternative embodiment, only one of the battery module assemblies (110 and 120) may be adopted, or three or more battery module assemblies may be adopted.
[0045] The battery module assemblies (110 and 120) may have battery cells (111, 121) and busbar patterns (113, 123). Since the detailed configurations of the battery module assemblies (110 and 120) are generally identical to one another, the following description will be based on the second battery module assembly (120).
[0046] (2) The battery cell (121) may be a cylindrical secondary battery in which a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an electrolyte, a separator, etc. are housed within an external metal case. The battery cell (121) may be arranged to be erected along the vertical direction (V). The battery cell (121) may be provided in multiple numbers, and the multiple battery cells (121) may be arranged in succession along the horizontal direction (H) relative to one another. The horizontal direction (H) may be a direction generally perpendicular to the vertical direction (V). The battery cell (121) is exemplified as cylindrical, but prismatic, pouch-type, etc. battery cells are not excluded.
[0047] (2) The busbar pattern (123) is configured to connect the terminals of a plurality of battery cells (121) to each other. The busbar pattern (123) may be made of a conductive material, for example, metal. The busbar pattern (123) may be connected to the positive terminal and the negative terminal of the battery cell (121). The busbar pattern (123) and the (1) busbar pattern (113) of the first battery module assembly (110) may be electrically connected to each other by a separate busbar.
[0048] The base plate (130), side cover (140), front cover (150), and top cover (160) may form a case or housing that accommodates the battery module assembly (110, 120). The case may also include a rear cover not shown in the drawing.
[0049] The base plate (130) may be located on the lower side of the first battery module assembly (110). The first battery module assembly (110) is coupled to the base plate (130), and the base plate (130) may support the battery module assembly (110, 120).
[0050] Side covers (140) can be placed on both sides of the battery module assembly (110, 120). Side covers (140) can face the sides of the battery module assembly (110, 120).
[0051] A front cover (150) may be located at the front of a battery module assembly (110, 120). The front cover (150) may be equipped with a sensing board for measuring the state of the battery cells (111, 121), such as voltage and temperature, and electrode terminals connected to busbar patterns (113, 123). For the installation of the sensing board, the front cover (150) may be made of an insulating material, such as plastic. The front cover (150) may have a main plate (151) and a mounting plate (155). If the main plate (151) has an area corresponding to the front of the battery module assembly (110, 120), the mounting plate (155) may be installed in one area of the main plate (151).
[0052] The upper cover (160) may be located on the upper side of the second battery module assembly (120). The upper cover (160) may be made of a metal material together with the base plate (130) and the side cover (140). In that case, an insulating film may be placed between the upper cover (160) and the busbar pattern (123).
[0053] One of the module busbars (190) is configured to connect the electrode terminal (115, see FIG. 2) of the first battery module assembly (110) to the electrode terminal of the second battery module assembly of another battery pack assembly. The other of the module busbars (190) can also connect the electrode terminal (125, see FIG. 2) of the second battery module assembly (120) to the electrode terminal of the first battery module assembly of another battery pack assembly.
[0054] FIG. 2 is an assembled perspective view showing a battery pack assembly excluding the front cover in FIG. 1.
[0055] Referring to the drawing, the battery module assembly (110, 120) may further include electrode terminals (115, 125) and wires (117, 127). The electrode terminals (115, 125) may be electrically connected to the busbar pattern (113, 123) as previously described. The wires (117, 127) may connect the sensing substrate to the busbar pattern (113, 123) or connect the sensing substrate to a temperature sensor, etc.
[0056] The first electrode terminal (115) and the second electrode terminal (125) may be arranged to form a virtual straight line (L) following a direction related to the vertical direction (V). The arrangement direction of the virtual straight line (L) may coincide with the vertical direction (V) or may deviate slightly. The latter may be the case where the electrode terminals (115 and 125) are arranged to such an extent that the state in which the second electrode terminal (125) is assembled or prepared for assembly interferes with the assembly of the first electrode terminal (115) along the vertical direction (V). When projected along the vertical direction (V), at least a portion of the second electrode terminal (125) may be located within the projected area of the first electrode terminal (115). Due to this arrangement relationship of the electrode terminals (115 and 125), the first battery cell (111) and the second battery cell (121) may be arranged generally identically to each other. By making the arrangement of the battery cells (111 and 121) identical, unnecessary waste of space can be minimized. Additionally, the module busbar (190) has a minimum length along the vertical direction (V), so that electrical resistance can be minimized.
[0057] The front cover (150) can be coupled to the side cover (140) and the top cover (160), etc. The rear cover can be coupled to the side cover (140) and the top cover (160), etc.
[0058] The base plate (130) and the side cover (140) are not directly joined, but can be joined through an intermediate member (170). The intermediate member (170) is joined to the base plate (130), and the side cover (140) can be joined to the intermediate member (170).
[0059] FIG. 3 is an exploded perspective view of the second electrode terminal and related components of FIG. 1. For convenience, the reference number for the second electrode terminal (125) is assigned as 200.
[0060] Referring to the drawing, the second electrode terminal (200) may include a second pattern terminal (210), a second exposed terminal (230), and a bridge terminal (250).
[0061] The second pattern terminal (210) can be connected to the second busbar pattern (123). In this embodiment, the second pattern terminal (210) is exemplified as being formed as a single member with the second busbar pattern (123), but they (123 and 210) may be manufactured as separate members and then combined with each other. The main surface of the second pattern terminal (210) becomes a coupling surface (215), and the coupling surface (215) may be arranged to face a mounting plate (155) or a front cover (150). The front cover (150) is a cover associated with the second electrode terminal (200) among the cases, and may be simply referred to as a cover below.
[0062] The second exposed terminal (230) may be installed on the cover (150) so as to be exposed to the outside. An exposed area (231), which is a part of the second exposed terminal (230), may be exposed to the outside of the mounting plate (155). The second exposed terminal (230) may be detachably coupled to the second pattern terminal (210).
[0063] The bridge terminal (250) can mediate the coupling between the second pattern terminal (210) and the second exposed terminal (230). The bridge terminal (250) may have a first region (251) facing the second pattern terminal (210), specifically the coupling surface (215). The bridge terminal (250) may also have a second region (255) facing the coupling region (235) of the second exposed terminal (230). The first region (251) and the second region (255) may be arranged at an angle relative to each other. In this embodiment, the regions (251 and 255) may form an angle of approximately 90° relative to each other.
[0064] The connection of the first region (251) of the bridge terminal (250) to the connection surface (215) of the second pattern terminal (210), and the connection of the second region (255) of the bridge terminal (250) to the connection region (235) of the second exposed terminal (230) can be achieved by bolting.
[0065] A mounting plate (155) may have a mounting surface (156a) formed thereon on which the exposed area (231) of the second exposed terminal (230) is seated. An insertion hole (156b) may be formed in one side area of the mounting surface (156a). The insertion hole (156b) may be formed in a size through which the coupling area (235) of the second exposed terminal (230) passes. The mounting surface (156a) may be surrounded by a side wall (157). The side wall (157) protrudes from the mounting plate (155) and may surround three corners of the mounting surface (156a). In the section corresponding to one corner of the mounting surface (156a) {open section (157a)}, the side wall (157) is not formed, so that the module bus bar (190, see FIG. 1) can be extended through the section (157a). The open section (157a) can be positioned to correspond to the straight line (L).
[0066] An opening (152) corresponding to a mounting plate (155) may be formed in the main plate (151) of the cover (150). In order to allow a work tool to access the coupling surface (215) while the main plate (151) is coupled to the side cover (140, see FIG. 1), the opening (152) may be positioned to correspond to the coupling surface (215). As the mounting plate (155) is coupled to the main plate (151), the opening (152) may be closed.
[0067] According to this configuration, with the main plate (151) coupled to the side cover (140), the operator can bolt the bridge terminal (250) to the second pattern terminal (210). The bridge terminal (250) and the work tool can approach the second pattern terminal (210) along the horizontal direction (H) through the opening (152).
[0068] After the bridge terminal (250) is coupled to the second pattern terminal (210), the mounting plate (155) can be coupled to the main plate (151). The second exposed terminal (230) can be mounted on the mounting plate (155). With the coupling area (235) of the second exposed terminal (230) and the second area (255) of the bridge terminal (250) overlapping, the operator can bolt the areas (235 and 255) by bringing a work tool toward the coupling area (235) and the second area (255) in a vertical direction (V).
[0069] The assembly work for the second electrode terminal (200) can be performed after the assembly work for the first electrode terminal (115, see FIG. 2). Since the bridge terminal (250) is coupled to the second pattern terminal (210) through the opening (152), the work of coupling the bridge terminal (250) to the second pattern terminal (210) does not interfere with the work of assembling the first electrode terminal (115) along the vertical direction (V). In addition, the work of coupling the bridge terminal (250) to the second pattern terminal (210) can be performed without problems even when the main plate (151) is coupled to the side cover (140).
[0070] FIG. 4 is a perspective view showing the first electrode terminal and the second electrode terminal of FIG. 1. For convenience, the reference number for the first electrode terminal (115) is assigned as 300.
[0071] Referring to the drawing, the first electrode terminal (300) may have a first pattern terminal (310), a first exposure terminal (330), and a bridge terminal (350), similar to the second electrode terminal (200).
[0072] The first pattern terminal (310) can be connected to the first busbar pattern (113).
[0073] The first exposed terminal (330) can be mounted on a cover (150), specifically a main plate (151, see FIG. 1 above), and exposed to the outside.
[0074] The bridge terminal (350) can connect the first exposed terminal (330) and the first pattern terminal (310).
[0075] In an alternative embodiment, the bridge terminal (350) may be formed as a single member with the first pattern terminal (310). With the main plate (151) coupled to the side cover (140), the operator can bolt the first exposed terminal (330) to the bridge terminal (350). To do this, the operator can bring a work tool to the terminals (330 and 350) along the vertical direction (V).
[0076] FIG. 5 is an exploded perspective view of a second electrode terminal and related configuration according to one variation of FIG. 3.
[0077] Referring to the drawing, the second electrode terminal (200') is generally the same as the second electrode terminal (200) according to the preceding embodiment, but differs in that the second exposed terminal (230') is directly coupled to the second pattern terminal (210).
[0078] The second exposed terminal (230') may be in the form where the second exposed terminal (230) and the bridge terminal (250) of the preceding embodiment are integrated. The second exposed terminal (230') may have an exposed area (231) corresponding to the seating surface (156a) and a coupling area (235') corresponding to the coupling surface (215). The exposed area (231) and the coupling area (235') may extend in opposite directions to each other, and the areas (231 and 235') may be connected by a connecting area (237).
[0079] In order to bolt the second exposed terminal (230') to the second pattern terminal (210), the mounting plate (155') may be divided into a seating area (155a) and a working area (155b). A seating surface (156a) and a side wall (157) may be formed in the seating area (155a). An open section (157a) may be formed in the upper part of the seating area (155a). A part of the working area (155b) may be spaced apart from the seating area (155a) to form an insertion hole (156b). The seating area (155a) and the working area (155b) may be bolted independently to the main plate (151).
[0080] According to this configuration, with the main plate (151) coupled to the side cover (140, see FIG. 1 above) and the seating area (155a) coupled to the main plate (151), the operator can bolt the second exposed terminal (230') to the second pattern terminal (210). The second exposed terminal (230') and the work tool can access the second pattern terminal (210) along the horizontal direction (H) through the area corresponding to the work area (155b) among the openings (152). The operator can then coupled the work area (155b) to the main plate (151).
[0081] In an alternative embodiment, the seating area (155a) may be formed to be integral with the main plate (151). In that case, only the working area (155b) may be formed as a separate member from the main plate (151) and coupled to the main plate (151).
[0082] FIG. 6 is a perspective view showing a battery rack assembly according to another embodiment of the present invention.
[0083] Referring to the drawing, the battery rack assembly may have a rack (400) and a plurality of battery pack assemblies (100, 100').
[0084] The rack (400) can generally be a frame that creates a cuboid-shaped space. The frame can create multiple layers of shelves.
[0085] Battery pack assemblies (100 and 100') can be stacked along the vertical direction (V) while supported on the shelf.
[0086] The second electrode terminal of the battery pack assembly (100) can be connected to the first electrode terminal of another battery pack assembly (100') by a module busbar (190). The module busbar (190) can extend along the vertical direction (V) or along a direction slightly inclined with respect to the vertical direction (V).
[0087] Another module busbar (190') can connect the second electrode terminal of the highest-positioned battery pack assembly (100') to the first electrode terminal of the lowest-positioned battery pack assembly. Due to a large number of battery pack assemblies, the distance between the second electrode terminal and the first electrode terminal may differ from the design value. To absorb such manufacturing errors, the module busbar (190') may have a flexible area (195').
[0088] The flexible region (195') may be located between a pair of rigid regions (191' and 193'). The flexible region (195') may be formed by stacking multiple metal plates and joining them together. The flexible region (195') can absorb the error while bending. Explanation of the symbols
