[0055] A Y-maze experiment was conducted to evaluate cognitive function induced by SPS+FS stimulation and herbal medicine extracts.

[0056] The apparatus for the Y-maze experiment consists of three arms (designated as A, B, and C). The length of each arm is 40 cm, the width is 12 cm, and the height is 30 cm. The angle at which three arms meet adjacent arms is 120 degrees, and the entire experimental apparatus is composed of black plastic and white acrylic plates. A mouse was carefully placed in the center of the maze and allowed to move freely for 8 minutes. The arm the mouse entered was then recorded, but only if the mouse had entered completely up to its tail; repeated entry into an arm was also recorded. The number of times and the order of entry into each arm were measured to evaluate the mouse's total arm entry and spontaneous alteration score (% correction). The spontaneous alteration score was defined as entering the three arms sequentially, i.e., ABC, BCA, CAB, etc., and was calculated using the following Equation 1.

The dentate gyrus of the hippocampus is the site where hippocampal neurogenesis—the generation of new neurons throughout life—occurs, as well as learning and memory.

[0062] Brains excised from mice were sectioned in a cryostat in a 1-in-6 series. To inactivate intracellular peroxidase, the sections were treated with 0.6% hydrogen peroxide, washed, and blocked.
