[0031] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in more detail with reference to the attached drawings. Identical or similar reference numerals are used for identical components in the attached drawings.
[0032] FIG. 1 is a plan view showing a display device according to one embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along line II' of FIG. 1.
[0033] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the display device (10) may include a first substrate (100), a second substrate (200), and a sealing member (300). The second substrate (200) is opposite to the first substrate (100) and may be located in a first direction (D1), which is the front direction of the display device (10), from the first substrate (100). The sealing member (300) may join the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200).
[0034] A display device (10) (e.g., each of the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200)) may include a display area (DA) where an image is displayed and a peripheral area (PA) located around the display area (DA). The peripheral area (PA) may be located outside the display area (DA). For example, the peripheral area (PA) may surround the display area (DA) on a plane.
[0035] A first substrate (100) includes a plurality of pixels and may be referred to as a display substrate. The pixels may be placed in a display area (DA) of the first substrate (100). Each of the pixels may include a driving element and a light-emitting element. The driving element may include at least one thin-film transistor. The light-emitting element may generate light according to a driving signal. For example, the light-emitting element may be an inorganic light-emitting diode or an organic light-emitting diode.
[0036] The second substrate (200) includes a color conversion unit and may be referred to as a color conversion substrate. The color conversion unit is positioned in a display area (DA) and can convert the wavelength of light generated from the light-emitting element of the first substrate (100). The second substrate (200) may further include a color filter layer that transmits light of a specific color.
[0037] The sealing member (300) can combine the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200). For example, the sealing member (300) may be placed in the peripheral area (PA) between the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200) to surround a display area (DA) on a plane. For example, the sealing member (300) may have a hollow rectangular planar shape. However, embodiments of the present invention are not limited thereto, and the sealing member (300) may have various planar shapes depending on the planar shape of the first substrate (100) or the second substrate (200). For example, if the first substrate (100) or the second substrate (200) has a planar shape such as a triangle, rhombus, polygon, circle, or ellipse, the sealing member (300) may have a planar shape such as a hollow triangle, hollow rhombus, hollow polygon, hollow circle, or hollow ellipse.
[0038] In one embodiment, a filler material may be disposed between the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200). For example, the filler material may act as a buffer against external pressure applied to the display device (10). For example, the filler material may maintain a gap between the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200).
[0039] Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view showing an enlarged view of area 'A' in Figure 2.
[0040] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, the display area (DA) may include a light-emitting area and a light-blocking area (BA). Light (L1B) (hereinafter, incident light (L1B)) generated from the first substrate (100) and incident on the second substrate (200) may be emitted to the outside through the light-emitting area. For example, the incident light (L1B) may have a blue color. The light-emitting area may include first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3) for emitting light of different colors. For example, the first light-emitting area (LA1) may emit a first transmitted light (L2R) having a red color, the second light-emitting area (LA2) may emit a second transmitted light (L2G) having a green color, and the third light-emitting area (LA3) may emit a third transmitted light (L2B) having a blue color.
[0041] In one embodiment, the first to third light-emitting regions (LA1, LA2, LA3) may be spaced apart from each other on a plane and arranged to repeat each other. A light-blocking region (BA) may surround the first to third light-emitting regions (LA1, LA2, LA3) on a plane. For example, the light-blocking region (BA) may have a grid shape on a plane.
[0042] In one embodiment, the first substrate (100) may include a first base substrate (110), a buffer layer (120), first to third driving elements (TR1, TR2, TR3), an insulating structure (130), a pixel defining film (140), first to third light-emitting elements (LED1, LED2, LED3), and an encapsulation layer (150).
[0043] The first base substrate (110) may be an insulating substrate formed from a transparent or opaque material. In one embodiment, the first base substrate (110) may include glass. In this case, the first substrate (100) may be a flexible display substrate.
[0044] In one embodiment, the first base substrate (110) may include a light-blocking material. For example, at least a portion of the first base substrate (110) may include a light-blocking material such as a black pigment, a dye, carbon black, etc. That is, the first base substrate (110) may be black.
[0045] A buffer layer (120) may be disposed on a first base substrate (110). The buffer layer (120) can prevent impurities, such as oxygen and moisture, from diffusing to the upper surface of the first base substrate (110) through the first base substrate (110). The buffer layer (120) may include inorganic insulating materials such as silicon compounds and metal oxides. Examples of the inorganic insulating materials include silicon oxide (SiO), silicon nitride (SiN), silicon oxynitride (SiON), silicon oxycarbide (SiOC), silicon carbonitride (SiCN), aluminum oxide (AlO), aluminum nitride (AlN), tantalum oxide (TaO), hafnium oxide (HfO), zirconium oxide (ZrO), and titanium oxide (TiO). These may be used alone or in combination with each other. The buffer layer (120) may have a single-layer structure or a multilayer structure including a plurality of insulating layers.
[0046] The first to third driving elements (TR1, TR2, TR3) may be placed in a display area (DA) on the buffer layer (120). Each of the first to third driving elements (TR1, TR2, TR3) may include at least one thin-film transistor. The channel layer of the thin-film transistor may include an oxide semiconductor, a silicon semiconductor, an organic semiconductor, etc. For example, the oxide semiconductor may include at least one oxide selected from indium (In), gallium (Ga), tin (Sn), zirconium (Zr), vanadium (V), hafnium (Hf), cadmium (Cd), germanium (Ge), chromium (Cr), titanium (Ti), and zinc (Zn). The silicon semiconductor may include amorphous silicon, polycrystalline silicon, etc.
[0047] The insulating structure (130) can cover the first to third driving elements (TR1, TR2, TR3). The insulating structure (130) may include a combination of an inorganic insulating layer and an organic insulating layer.
[0048] First to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3) may be disposed on an insulating structure (130). Each of the first to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3) may include a conductive material such as a metal, an alloy, a conductive metal nitride, a conductive metal oxide, or a transparent conductive material. Each of the first to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3) may have a single-layer structure or a multi-layer structure including a plurality of conductive layers.
[0049] The first to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3) can be electrically connected to the first to third driving elements (TR1, TR2, TR3) respectively through contact holes formed in the insulating structure (130).
[0050] A pixel defining film (140) may be disposed on the first to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3). The pixel defining film (140) may include an organic insulating material. Examples of the organic insulating material include photoresist, polyacryl-based resin, polyimide-based resin, polyamide-based resin, siloxane-based resin, acrylic-based resin, epoxy-based resin, etc. These may be used alone or in combination with each other. The pixel defining film (140) may define a pixel opening that exposes at least a portion of each of the first to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3).
[0051] A light-emitting layer (EL) may be disposed on the first to third pixel electrodes (AE1, AE2, AE3) exposed by the pixel opening of the pixel defining film (140). In one embodiment, the light-emitting layer (EL) may be continuously extended over a plurality of pixels on a display area (DA). In another embodiment, the light-emitting layer (EL) may be separated from the light-emitting layer of an adjacent pixel.
[0052] The emitting layer (EL) may include at least one of an organic light-emitting material and quantum dots. In one embodiment, the emitting layer (EL) may generate blue light. However, embodiments of the present invention are not limited thereto. In another embodiment, the emitting layer (EL) may generate red light or green light, or may generate light having different colors depending on the pixel.
[0053] In one embodiment, functional layers such as a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, an electron transport layer, and an electron injection layer may be disposed on the upper and / or lower portions of the light-emitting layer (EL).
[0054] A common electrode (CE) may be disposed on the light-emitting layer (EL). The common electrode (CE) may include a conductive material such as a metal, an alloy, a conductive metal nitride, a conductive metal oxide, or a transparent conductive material. The common electrode (CE) may have a single-layer structure or a multi-layer structure including a plurality of conductive layers. In one embodiment, the common electrode (CE) may be continuously extended over a display area (DA) across a plurality of pixels.
[0055] A first pixel electrode (AE1), a light-emitting layer (EL), and a common electrode (CE) can form a first light-emitting element (LED1), a second pixel electrode (AE2), a light-emitting layer (EL), and a common electrode (CE) can form a second light-emitting element (LED2), and a third pixel electrode (AE3), a light-emitting layer (EL), and a common electrode (CE) can form a third light-emitting element (LED3).
[0056] The encapsulation layer (150) may be disposed on a common electrode (CE). The encapsulation layer (150) may include at least one inorganic encapsulation layer and at least one organic encapsulation layer. In one embodiment, the encapsulation layer (150) may include a first inorganic encapsulation layer (151) disposed on the common electrode (CE), an organic encapsulation layer (152) disposed on the first inorganic encapsulation layer (151), and a second inorganic encapsulation layer (153) disposed on the organic encapsulation layer (152).
[0057] In one embodiment, a dam (DM) may be disposed in a peripheral area (PA) on the first base substrate (110). For example, the dam (DM) may surround a display area (DA) on a plane. The dam (DM) can prevent organic material from overflowing to the outside of the dam (DM) (e.g., to the second direction (D2) in FIG. 3) during the formation of the organic encapsulation layer (152).
[0058] The second substrate (200) may be disposed in a first direction (D1) from the encapsulation layer (150). Hereinafter, the first direction (D1) may be referred to as the front direction or the thickness direction.
[0059] In one embodiment, the second substrate (200) may include a second base substrate (210), an organic layer (220), a color filter layer (230), a partition structure (240), a first color conversion unit (252), a second color conversion unit (254), a transmission unit (256), a front light-blocking member (260), a side light-blocking member (270), and a capping layer (280).
[0060] The second base substrate (210) may be an insulating substrate formed of a transparent material. The second base substrate (210) may include glass or plastic, etc. The second base substrate (210) may include the display area (DA) and the surrounding area (PA) described above.
[0061] The organic layer (220) may be disposed in a display area (DA) below the second base substrate (210). In one embodiment, the organic layer (220) may overlap with a light-blocking area (BA) and may not overlap with the first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3). That is, the organic layer (220) may define the light-blocking area (BA) and the first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3) within the display area (DA). The organic layer (220) may be formed of a transparent or opaque organic material. In another embodiment, the organic layer (220) may also overlap with the first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3).
[0062] The color filter layer (230) may be placed in the display area (DA) below the second base substrate (210). In one embodiment, the color filter layer (230) may include a red color filter (230R), a green color filter (230G), and a blue color filter (230B).
[0063] The red color filter (230R) overlaps with the first light-emitting region (LA1) and can selectively transmit red light. The green color filter (230G) overlaps with the second light-emitting region (LA2) and can selectively transmit green light. The blue color filter (230B) overlaps with the third light-emitting region (LA3) and can selectively transmit blue light.
[0064] In one embodiment, the red color filter (230R), the green color filter (230G), and the blue color filter (230B) may each be positioned to overlap further with the light-blocking area (BA). That is, as shown in FIG. 3, the red color filter (230R) may overlap with the first light-emitting area (LA1) and the light-blocking area (BA), and may not overlap with the second and third light-emitting areas (LA2, LA3). The green color filter (230G) may overlap with the second light-emitting area (LA2) and the light-blocking area (BA), and may not overlap with the first and third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA3). The blue color filter (230B) may overlap with the third light-emitting area (LA3) and the light-blocking area (BA), and may not overlap with the first and second light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2). In this case, in the light-blocking area (BA), parts of the red, green, and blue color filters (230R, 230G, 230B) may overlap each other in the first direction (D1). Accordingly, color mixing between adjacent first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3) can be prevented.
[0065] A partition structure (240) may be placed in a display area (DA) below the color filter layer (230). A plurality of openings may be formed in the partition structure (240). For example, as shown in FIG. 3, the openings of the partition structure (240) may each expose first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3). The partition structure (240) may form a space capable of accommodating an ink composition during the process of forming the first color conversion section (252), the second color conversion section (254), and the transmission section (256). For example, the partition structure (240) may overlap the entire light-blocking area (BA) and have a grid shape on a plane.
[0066] The partition structure (240) may include an organic material. In one embodiment, the partition structure (240) may further include a light-blocking material. For example, at least a portion of the partition structure (240) may include a light-blocking material such as a black pigment, a dye, carbon black, etc.
[0067] The first color conversion unit (252), the second color conversion unit (254), and the transmission unit (256) are positioned in the display area (DA) below the color filter layer (230) and may overlap with the first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3), respectively. For example, the first color conversion unit (252), the second color conversion unit (254), and the transmission unit (256) may each be positioned within the openings of the partition structure (240).
[0068] The first color conversion unit (252) may overlap with the first light emission region (LA1). The first color conversion unit (252) may convert incident light (L1B) having blue light into first transmitted light (L2R) having red light. For example, the first color conversion unit (252) may include a resin part (252a), a scatterer (252b), and a wavelength conversion particle (252c).
[0069] The scatterer (252b) can increase the light path by scattering the incident light (L1B) without substantially changing the wavelength of the incident light (L1B) incident on the first color conversion unit (252). The scatterer (252b) may include a metal oxide or an organic material. Optionally, the scatterer (252b) may be omitted.
[0070] In one embodiment, the wavelength conversion particle (252c) may include a quantum dot. The quantum dot may be defined as a semiconductor material having a nanocrystal. The quantum dot has a specific bandgap depending on its composition and size. Accordingly, the quantum dot may absorb incident light and emit light having a wavelength different from the incident light. For example, the quantum dot may have a diameter of about 100 nm or less, and preferably a diameter of about 1 nm to about 20 nm. For example, the wavelength conversion particle (252c) of the first color conversion unit (252) may include a quantum dot that absorbs blue light and emits red light.
[0071] The scatterer (252b) and the wavelength conversion particle (252c) may be disposed within the resin portion (252a). For example, the resin portion (252a) may include an epoxy resin, an acrylic resin, a phenolic resin, a melamine resin, a cardo resin, an imide resin, etc.
[0072] The first color conversion unit (252) can convert incident light (L1B) having blue light and emit first transmitted light (L2R) having red light. Blue light not converted by the first color conversion unit (252) can be blocked by a red color filter (230R). Accordingly, in the first light emission region (LA1), the first transmitted light (L2R) having red light can pass through the second base substrate (210) and be emitted to the outside (i.e., to the first direction (D1)).
[0073] The second color conversion unit (254) may overlap with the second light emission region (LA2). The second color conversion unit (254) may convert incident light (L1B) having blue light into second transmitted light (L2G) having green light. For example, the second color conversion unit (254) may include a resin part (254a), a scatterer (254b), and a wavelength conversion particle (254c). The resin part (254a) and the scatterer (254b) of the second color conversion unit (254) may be substantially identical or similar to the resin part (252a) and the scatterer (252b) of the first color conversion unit (252).
[0074] For example, the wavelength conversion particle (254c) of the second color conversion unit (254) may include a quantum dot that absorbs blue light and emits green light. Accordingly, the second color conversion unit (254) can convert incident light (L1B) having blue light and emit second transmitted light (L2R) having green light. Blue light not converted by the second color conversion unit (254) can be blocked by a green color filter (230G). Accordingly, in the second light emission region (LA2), second transmitted light (L2G) having green light can pass through the second base substrate (210) and be emitted to the outside (i.e., to the first direction (D1)).
[0075] The transmission portion (256) may overlap with the third light-emitting region (LA3). For example, the transmission portion (256) may include a resin portion (256a) and a scatterer (256b). The resin portion (256a) and the scatterer (256b) of the transmission portion (256) may be substantially identical or similar to the resin portion (252a) and the scatterer (252b) of the first color conversion portion (252).
[0076] The transmitting portion (256) may not convert the incident light (L1B) having blue. That is, the transmitting portion (256) may emit a third transmitted light (L2B) having a wavelength substantially the same as the wavelength of the incident light (L1B). Accordingly, in the third light emission region (LA3), the third transmitted light (L2B) having blue may pass through the second base substrate (210) and be emitted to the outside (i.e., to the first direction (D1)).
[0077] In the first to third light-emitting regions (LA1, LA2, LA3), the first to third transmitted lights (L2R, L2G, L2B) emitted to the outside through the second base substrate (210) are combined, so that the image can be displayed in the display region (DA).
[0078] A front light-blocking member (260) may be placed in a peripheral area (PA) below the second base substrate (210). For example, the front light-blocking member (260) may be placed in a peripheral area (PA) below the second base substrate (210) to surround a display area (DA) on a flat surface. The front light-blocking member (260) can prevent circuit structures, such as wiring and driving circuits, placed in the peripheral area (PA) of the first substrate (100) from being visible from outside the display device (10). Additionally, the front light-blocking member (260) can prevent a front light leakage phenomenon in which light reflected from the circuit structures or light emitted from the display area (DA) passes through the peripheral area (PA) of the second base substrate (210) and is emitted in a front direction (i.e., a first direction (D1)).
[0079] The front light-blocking member (260) may include a plurality of first light-blocking layers. The first light-blocking layers may overlap each other in a first direction (D1). For example, the front light-blocking member (260) may include a first red light-blocking layer (260R), a first green light-blocking layer (260G), and a first blue light-blocking layer (260B). As shown in FIG. 3, the first red light-blocking layer (260R), the first green light-blocking layer (260G), and the first blue light-blocking layer (260B) may overlap each other in a first direction (D1). Accordingly, the front light-blocking member (260) can effectively block light traveling in the first direction (D1).
[0080] The side light-blocking member (270) is positioned in the peripheral area (PA) below the second base substrate (210) and may be positioned outside the front light-blocking member (260). For example, the side light-blocking member (270) may be positioned in the peripheral area (PA) below the second base substrate (210) to surround the front light-blocking member (260) in a plane. The side light-blocking member (270) can prevent side light leakage, such as light reflected from the circuit structure or light emitted from the display area (DA), passing through the front light-blocking member (260) and being emitted outward (e.g., to the second direction (D2) perpendicular to the first direction (D1) in FIG. 3).
[0081] The side light-blocking member (270) may include a bank (272). In one embodiment, the side light-blocking member (270) may further include at least one second light-blocking layer. The bank (272) and the second light-blocking layer may overlap each other in a second direction (D2).
[0082] The bank (272) contains an organic material and can surround the front shading member (260) on a flat surface. For example, the bank (272) can come into contact with the outer surface of the front shading member (260).
[0083] In one embodiment, the thickness of the bank (272) in the first direction (D1) may be equal to or greater than the thickness of the front light-blocking member (260) in the first direction (D1). That is, the thickness of the bank (272) in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the thickness of each of the first red light-blocking layer (260R), the first green light-blocking layer (260G), and the first blue light-blocking layer (260B) in the first direction (D1).
[0084] In one embodiment, the bank (272) may include the same material as the organic layer (220) placed in the display area (DA). For example, the thickness of the bank (272) in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the thickness of the organic layer (220) in the first direction (D1).
[0085] The second light-blocking layer may surround the bank (272) on a flat surface. In one embodiment, the thickness of the second light-blocking layer in the first direction (D1) may be equal to or greater than the thickness of the front light-blocking member (260) in the first direction (D1). The thickness of the second light-blocking layer in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the width of the second light-blocking layer in the second direction (D2).
[0086] In one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 3, the side shading member (270) may include a second red shading layer (274R), a second green shading layer (274G), and a second blue shading layer (274B). The second green shading layer (274G) may surround the bank (272) in a plane. The second red shading layer (274R) may surround the second green shading layer (274G) in a plane. The second blue shading layer (274B) may surround the second red shading layer (274R) in a plane. That is, the bank (272), the second green shading layer (274G), the second red shading layer (274R), and the second blue shading layer (274B) may overlap each other in a second direction (D2). Accordingly, the side light-blocking member (270) can effectively block light traveling in the second direction (D2) (i.e., outward direction) from the front light-blocking member (260).
[0087] In one embodiment, the thickness in the first direction (D1) of each of the second red light-blocking layer (274R), the second green light-blocking layer (274G), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be equal to or greater than the thickness in the first direction (D1) of the front light-blocking member (260). That is, the thickness in the first direction (D1) of the second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be greater than the thickness in the first direction (D1) of the first red light-blocking layer (260R). The thickness in the first direction (D1) of the second green light-blocking layer (274G) may be greater than the thickness in the first direction (D1) of the first green light-blocking layer (260G). The thickness in the first direction (D1) of the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be greater than the thickness in the first direction (D1) of the first blue light-blocking layer (260B). For example, the bank (272), the second red light-blocking layer (274R), the second green light-blocking layer (274G), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may have the same or similar thickness.
[0088] In one embodiment, the second red light-blocking layer (274R) may include the same material as the red color filter layer (230R) and the first red light-blocking layer (260R). The second green light-blocking layer (274G) may include the same material as the green color filter layer (230G) and the first green light-blocking layer (260G). The second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may include the same material as the blue color filter layer (230B) and the first blue light-blocking layer (260B).
[0089] The capping layer (280) may be disposed on the lower part of the second base substrate (210). The capping layer (280) may be disposed entirely over the display area (DA) and the surrounding area (PA). For example, the capping layer (280) may cover the partition structure (240), the first color conversion part (252), the second color conversion part (254), the transparent part (256), the front light-blocking member (260), and the side light-blocking member (270) on the lower part of the second base substrate (210). The capping layer (280) may include an inorganic insulating material.
[0090] The sealing member (300) may be placed in the peripheral area (PA) between the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200). For example, the sealing member (300) may surround the side light-blocking member (270) on a plane. The sealing member (300) may join the first substrate (100) and the second substrate (200).
[0091] In exemplary embodiments, light reflected from the circuit structure or light emitted from the display area (DA) may pass through the front light-blocking member (260) and be emitted outwardly (i.e., to the second direction (D2) in FIG. 3). Specifically, light reflected from the circuit structure or light emitted from the display area (DA) may be incident on a first green light-blocking layer (260R) located at the bottom of the front light-blocking member (260). A portion of the incident light may travel outwardly within the first green light-blocking layer (260R) and be emitted outwardly from the first green light-blocking layer (260R). In the absence of a side light-blocking member (270), the green light emitted outwardly from the first green light-blocking layer (260R) may be incident on the sealing member (300). At this time, if the sealing member (300) includes a transparent material (or, even if the sealing member (300) includes an opaque material, if it does not have a sufficient width in the second direction (D2), a side light leakage phenomenon may occur in which the green light is emitted from the sealing member (300) to the outside of the display device (10).
[0092] However, according to embodiments of the present invention, the second substrate (200) may include a side light-blocking member (270) surrounding the front light-blocking member (260). The side light-blocking member (270) can effectively block light traveling outward from the front light-blocking member (260) (i.e., to the second direction (D2) in FIG. 3). Thus, side light leakage of the display device (10) can be prevented or reduced.
[0093] FIGS. 4 to 8 are cross-sectional views illustrating a method for manufacturing a color conversion substrate included in the display device of FIG. 3.
[0094] Hereinafter, a method for manufacturing a second substrate (200) included in the display device (10) of FIG. 3 will be briefly described with reference to FIG. 4 to FIG. 8.
[0095] First, referring to FIG. 4, an organic layer (220) can be formed in a display area (DA) on a second base substrate (210), and a bank (272) can be formed in a surrounding area (PA). The organic layer (220) can be formed to overlap with a light-blocking area (BA). The bank (272) can be formed to surround the display area (DA) while being spaced apart from the display area (DA).
[0096] In one embodiment, the organic layer (220) and the bank (272) may be formed substantially simultaneously. The thickness of the bank (272) in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the thickness of the organic layer (220) in the first direction (D1). For example, the organic layer (220) and the bank (272) having different thicknesses may be formed substantially simultaneously by adjusting process conditions, such as the amount of droplets ejected in an inkjet printing process, differently depending on the location. As another example, after forming the organic layer, the organic layer may be patterned using a halftone mask to form the organic layer (220) and the bank (272) having different thicknesses substantially simultaneously. However, this is exemplary and the embodiments of the present invention are not limited thereto.
[0097] Referring to FIG. 5, a blue color filter (230B) may be formed in a display area (DA) on a second base substrate (210), and a first blue light-blocking layer (260B) and a second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be formed in a surrounding area (PA). The blue color filter (230B) may be formed to overlap with a third light-emitting area (LA3) and a light-blocking area (BA). The first blue light-blocking layer (260B) may be formed to surround the display area (DA) from the inside of the bank (272). The second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be formed to surround the bank (272) by being spaced outward from the bank (272).
[0098] In one embodiment, the blue color filter (230B), the first blue light-blocking layer (260B), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be formed substantially simultaneously. The thickness of the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the thickness of the blue color filter (230B) and the first blue light-blocking layer (260B) in the first direction (D1), respectively. For example, the blue color filter (230B), the first blue light-blocking layer (260B), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) having different thicknesses may be formed substantially simultaneously by adjusting process conditions, such as the amount of droplets ejected in an inkjet printing process, differently depending on the location. However, this is exemplary and the embodiments of the present invention are not limited thereto.
[0099] Referring to FIG. 6, a red color filter (230R) may be formed in a display area (DA) on a second base substrate (210), and a first red light-blocking layer (260R) and a second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be formed in a surrounding area (PA). The red color filter (230R) may be formed to overlap with the first light-emitting area (LA1) and the light-blocking area (BA). The first red light-blocking layer (260R) may be formed on the first blue light-blocking layer (260B). The second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be formed between the bank (272) and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B). The second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be formed to surround the bank (272) by being spaced outward from the bank (272).
[0100] In one embodiment, the red color filter (230R), the first red light-blocking layer (260R), and the second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be formed substantially simultaneously. The thickness of the second red light-blocking layer (274R) in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the thickness of the red color filter (230R) and the first red light-blocking layer (260R) in the first direction (D1), respectively. For example, the red color filter (230R), the first red light-blocking layer (260R), and the second red light-blocking layer (274R) having different thicknesses may be formed substantially simultaneously by adjusting process conditions, such as the amount of droplets ejected in the inkjet printing process, differently depending on the location. However, this is exemplary and the embodiments of the present invention are not limited thereto.
[0101] Referring to FIG. 7, a green color filter (230G) may be formed in a display area (DA) on a second base substrate (210), and a first green light-blocking layer (260G) and a second green light-blocking layer (274G) may be formed in a surrounding area (PA). The green color filter (230G) may be formed to overlap with the second light-emitting area (LA2) and the light-blocking area (BA). The first green light-blocking layer (260G) may be formed on the first red light-blocking layer (260R). The second green light-blocking layer (274G) may be formed to surround the bank (272) between the bank (272) and the second red light-blocking layer (274R).
[0102] In one embodiment, the green color filter (230G), the first green light-blocking layer (260G), and the second green light-blocking layer (274G) may be formed substantially simultaneously. The thickness of the second green light-blocking layer (274G) in the first direction (D1) may be greater than the thickness of the green color filter (230G) and the first green light-blocking layer (260G) in the first direction (D1), respectively. For example, the green color filter (230G), the first green light-blocking layer (260G), and the second green light-blocking layer (274G) having different thicknesses may be formed substantially simultaneously by adjusting process conditions, such as the amount of droplets ejected in the inkjet printing process, differently depending on the location. However, this is exemplary and the embodiments of the present invention are not limited thereto.
[0103] Referring to FIG. 8, a partition structure (240) can be formed in a display area (DA) on a color filter layer (230). Subsequently, openings can be formed in the partition structure (240) to expose first to third light-emitting areas (LA1, LA2, LA3), respectively. A first color conversion part (252), a second color conversion part (254), and a transmission part (256) can be formed within the openings of the partition structure (240), respectively. Subsequently, a capping layer (280) can be formed to cover the partition structure (240), the first color conversion part (252), the second color conversion part (254), the transmission part (256), the front light-blocking member (260), and the side light-blocking member (270).
[0104] According to embodiments of the present invention, the second substrate (200) may include a side light-blocking member (270) surrounding a front light-blocking member (260). The side light-blocking member (270) can block light traveling outward from the front light-blocking member (260). Thus, side light leakage of the display device (10) can be prevented or reduced. Additionally, the side light-blocking member (270) can be formed substantially simultaneously with the organic layer (220) and the color filter layer (230) formed in the display area (DA) of the second substrate (200). Thus, the manufacturing cost and manufacturing time of the display device (10) can be reduced.
[0105] FIGS. 9 to 16 are cross-sectional views showing a display device according to embodiments of the present invention.
[0106] For example, FIGS. 9 to 16 may each correspond to the cross-sectional view of FIG. 3. Hereinafter, display devices according to various embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 9 to 16. In the following description, the differences from the display device described with reference to FIG. 3 will be explained, and redundant descriptions will be omitted or simplified.
[0107] Referring to FIG. 9, in one embodiment, the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may surround the bank (272) on a plane, the second red light-blocking layer (274R) may surround the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) on a plane, and the second green light-blocking layer (274G) may surround the second red light-blocking layer (274R) on a plane. For example, a second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be formed adjacent to and surrounding the bank (272), and then a second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be formed adjacent to and surrounding the second blue light-blocking layer (274B), and then a second green light-blocking layer (274G) may be formed adjacent to and surrounding the second red light-blocking layer (274R). However, this is exemplary and the invention is not limited thereto, and the second red light-blocking layer (274R), the second green light-blocking layer (274G), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be arranged in various combinations to overlap each other in the second direction (D2).
[0108] Referring to FIGS. 10 to 12, in the embodiments, at least one of the second red light-blocking layer (274R), the second green light-blocking layer (274G), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be omitted. The smaller the number of the second light-blocking layers included in the side light-blocking member (270), the smaller the bezel area of the display device (10) can be reduced.
[0109] In one embodiment, when at least one of the second light-blocking layers is omitted, a second light-blocking layer of the same color as the first light-blocking layer located at the bottom of the first light-blocking layers of the front light-blocking member (260) may be omitted first. In this case, the bezel area of the display device (10) can be reduced while effectively preventing or reducing side light leakage of the display device (10).
[0110] For example, as illustrated in FIG. 10 and FIG. 11, when the first green shading layer (260G) is located at the bottom of the front shading member (260), the second green shading layer (274G) among the second red shading layer (274R), the second green shading layer (274G), and the second blue shading layer (274B) may be omitted preferentially. That is, when the side shading member (270) includes two of the second shading layers, the side shading member (270) may include a bank (272), a second red shading layer (274R), and a second blue shading layer (274B) ( FIG. 10). When the side shading member (270) includes one of the second shading layers, the side shading member (270) may include a bank (272) and a second blue shading layer (274B) (Fig. 11), or a bank (272) and a second red shading layer (274R).
[0111] As another example, although not illustrated in the drawing, if the first red light-blocking layer (260R) is located at the bottom of the front light-blocking member (260), the second red light-blocking layer (274R) among the second red light-blocking layer (274R), the second green light-blocking layer (274G), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be omitted first. As yet another example, if the first blue light-blocking layer (260B) is located at the bottom of the front light-blocking member (260), the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) among the second red light-blocking layer (274R), the second green light-blocking layer (274G), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) may be omitted first.
[0112] Referring to FIG. 13, in one embodiment, the side light-blocking member (270) may include a first bank (272a) and a second bank (272b). The first bank (272a) may surround the front light-blocking member (260) between the front light-blocking member (260) and the second green light-blocking layer (274G). The second bank (272b) may surround the second blue light-blocking layer (274B). According to the present embodiment, as the side light-blocking member (270) includes a plurality of banks, the side light leakage phenomenon of the display device (10) can be more effectively prevented or reduced.
[0113] Referring to FIG. 14, in one embodiment, the first green light-blocking layer (260G) may be positioned between the first red light-blocking layer (260R) and the first blue light-blocking layer (260B). That is, unlike FIG. 3, the first red light-blocking layer (260R) may be located at the bottom of the front light-blocking member (260). For example, after the blue color filter (230B), the first blue light-blocking layer (260B), and the second blue light-blocking layer (274B) are formed, the green color filter (230G), the first green light-blocking layer (260G), and the second green light-blocking layer (274G) may be formed, and subsequently the red color filter (230R), the first red light-blocking layer (260R), and the second red light-blocking layer (274R) may be formed. In this case, even if light reflected from the circuit structure or light emitted from the display area (DA) passes through the front light-blocking member (260) and is emitted outwardly (i.e., in the second direction (D2) in FIG. 14), it is possible to emit red light of relatively low brightness. Thus, the side light leakage phenomenon of the display device (10) can be more effectively prevented or reduced.
[0114] Referring to FIG. 15, in one embodiment, the bank (272) comprises the same material as the partition structure (240) placed in the display area (DA) and can be formed substantially simultaneously. For example, the bank (272) can be formed after the first light-blocking layers and the second light-blocking layers are formed. For example, the organic layer (220) formed in the display area (DA) can be omitted. The side light-blocking member (270) can be formed substantially simultaneously with the color filter layer (230) and the partition structure (240) formed in the display area (DA) of the second substrate (200). Thus, the manufacturing cost and manufacturing time of the display device (10) can be reduced.
[0115] Referring to FIG. 16, in one embodiment, the display device (10) may further include an optical sheet (400) attached to the lower surface of a first substrate (100). The optical sheet (400) is attached to the lower surface of a first base substrate (110) and may have a refractive index higher than that of the first base substrate (110). In this case, light emitted from a display area (DA) may be prevented from being totally reflected from the lower surface of the first base substrate (110). Thus, the side light leakage phenomenon of the display device (10) can be more effectively prevented or reduced.
