[0013] In this embodiment, the blocking frame may include a metal or an inorganic binder.
[0014] In the present embodiment, the support frame is formed of a material including aluminum, and the blocking frame may be formed of a material including at least one of steel and mica.
[0015] In the present embodiment, the blocking frame may include a lower frame coupled to the support frame, an upper frame spaced apart from the lower frame at a certain distance and arranged parallel to the lower frame, and an intermediate frame connecting the upper frame and the lower frame.
[0016] In this embodiment, the cell stack is provided with a terminal to which a bus bar is connected, and the terminal may be arranged to face the intermediate frame.
[0017] In this embodiment, one side of the intermediate frame may be connected to the center of the upper frame, and the other side may be connected to the center of the lower frame.
[0018] In this embodiment, one side of the intermediate frame may be connected to one side of the upper frame, and the other side may be connected to one side or the other side of the lower frame.
[0019] In the present embodiment, the intermediate frame may include a first intermediate frame connecting one side of the upper frame and one side of the lower frame, and a second intermediate frame connecting the other side of the upper frame and the other side of the lower frame.
[0020] In the present embodiment, the support frame includes a joint portion joined to the lower plate, an extension portion spaced apart from the joint portion by a certain distance, and a connecting portion connecting the joint portion and the extension portion, and the blocking frame is provided in the form of a plate and can be stacked on both sides of the connecting portion.
[0021] In this embodiment, at least a portion of the blocking frame may be embedded inside the support frame.
[0022] In this embodiment, two venting channels spatially separated by one of the partition members may be included.
[0024] In addition, a battery pack according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises a pack case and a plurality of cell stacks accommodated in a receiving space of the pack case, wherein the pack case comprises a lower plate on which the plurality of cell stacks are seated and a partition member that divides the receiving space into a plurality of sections, and the portion of the partition member facing the cell stacks may be formed of a material that melts at a temperature of 700°C or higher. Effects of the invention
[0026] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the bulkhead member of the battery pack is formed of a material with a higher melting point than the upper plate or lower plate of the pack case. Therefore, it does not easily melt even when in contact with explosion byproducts, thereby minimizing damage to the pack case caused by explosion byproducts and suppressing the spread of flames or high-temperature gases to prevent secondary ignition or explosion. [0033] FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view showing a battery pack according to an embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 2 is a partially exploded perspective view of FIG. 1. For convenience of explanation, FIG. 2 is illustrated with the upper plate omitted.
[0034] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a battery pack (1) according to an embodiment of the present invention may include a plurality of cell stacks (10) and a pack case (50).
[0036] The cell stack (10) may include a secondary battery such as a lithium battery or a nickel-hydrogen battery capable of charging and discharging. Each cell stack (10) may be formed in a cuboid shape by stacking a plurality of battery cells, and may be housed within a case or fixed in a stacked state by means of a bracket, etc.
[0037] The cell stack (10) may be provided with at least one terminal (11) on one side. The terminal (11) may be a conductive member exposed to the outside of the cell stack (10) to electrically connect the battery cells to the outside.
[0038] In this embodiment, the terminal (11) may be positioned at least one of the two longitudinal ends of the cell stack (10). Additionally, the upper surface of the terminal (11) may be open to the outside of the cell stack (10).
[0039] The terminal (11) may include a positive terminal and a negative terminal. The positive terminal and the negative terminal may both be placed at one end of the cell stack (10) or distributed at both ends of the cell stack (10).
[0040] A bus bar (20) can be connected to the terminal (11).
[0041] A busbar (20) can connect the terminals (11) of one cell stack (10a, hereinafter referred to as the first cell stack) and an adjacent cell stack (10b, hereinafter referred to as the second cell stack) to each other. For example, the busbar (20) can electrically / physically interconnect the terminals (11) by contacting the terminal (11) of the first cell stack (10a) and the terminal (11) of the adjacent second cell stack (10b).
[0042] The busbar (20) can be connected at each end to the terminal (11) of the cell stack (10) which is different from each other, through a fastening member such as a bolt.
[0043] The cell stacks (10) of the present embodiment can be connected to each other in series or in parallel through a bus bar (20). Additionally, if necessary, some of the cell stacks (10) may be connected in series and some may be connected in parallel.
[0044] The busbar (20) according to the present embodiment can be formed by processing a flat rod-shaped conductive member. Additionally, the busbar (20) can be formed from a flexible material. However, the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0046] The pack case (50) may provide a receiving space for accommodating other components. Thus, the pack case (50) may be provided in a form that encloses the entire cell stack (10), and a plurality of cell stacks (10) may be arranged side by side within the receiving space of the pack case (50) to form a plurality of rows.
[0047] The pack case (50) may be formed of a metal material to ensure rigidity, but is not limited thereto. For example, to enhance the heat dissipation effect, at least a portion of the pack case (50) may be formed of aluminum.
[0048] The pack case (50) may include a side wall portion (51) forming an internal space, a lower plate (52) covering the lower part of the internal space, and a partition member (60) disposed within the internal space. It may also further include an upper plate (53) covering the upper part of the internal space.
[0049] The side wall portion (51) forms the outer surface of the pack case (50) and can define an internal space. Accordingly, the cell stacks (10) can be accommodated within the internal space defined by the side wall portion (51) and placed on the lower plate (52).
[0050] The partition member (60) is positioned across the internal space formed by the side wall portion (51) to divide the internal space into multiple receiving spaces. Accordingly, at least a portion of the partition member (60) can be fastened to the side wall portion (51).
[0051] The bulkhead member (60) can reinforce the overall rigidity of the pack case (50). It can also be placed between the cell stacks (10) to prevent the propagation of gas or flame between the cell stacks (10).
[0052] Specifically, the partition member (60) may be positioned to span between two cell stacks (10) arranged to face each other.
[0053] Accordingly, the cell stack (10) can be distributed and arranged in a plurality of receiving spaces partitioned by the side wall portion (51) and the partition member (60). At this time, the cell stacks (100) can be coupled to the pack case (50) by being arranged so that one side on which the terminal (11) is placed faces the partition member (60).
[0055] In addition, at least a portion of the bulkhead member of the present embodiment may be formed of a material different from that of the lower plate (52). This is explained in detail as follows.
[0056] FIG. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the bulkhead member shown in FIG. 2, FIG. 4 is an exploded perspective view of the bulkhead member shown in FIG. 3, and FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view along I-I' of FIG. 1.
[0057] Referring to FIGS. 3 to 5 together, the bulkhead member (60) may include a support frame (70) coupled to the lower plate (52) of the pack case (50) and a blocking frame (80) coupled to the support frame (70).
[0058] The support frame (70) is a member that interconnects the lower plate (52) and the blocking frame (80), with one side fixedly fastened to the lower plate (52) and the other side connected to the blocking frame (80).
[0059] In this embodiment, a cooling device (not shown) may be provided on the outer surface of the lower plate (52). Since the cell stack (10) is placed on the lower plate (52), heat generated from the cell stack (10) can be directly transferred to the lower plate (52) of the pack case (50), and the heat transferred to the lower plate (52) can be released to the outside through a cooling device attached to the outer surface of the lower plate (52). Here, the cooling device may be a device that releases heat by air cooling or water cooling. Additionally, the lower plate (52) may be configured as part of the cooling device.
[0060] When configured in this manner, it is difficult to form a hole in the lower plate (52), so it is difficult to connect the support frame (70) to the lower plate (52) using a fastening member such as a bolt. Accordingly, in this embodiment, the support frame (70) can be connected to the lower plate (52) by means such as welding without using a fastening member. However, when the support frame (70) and the lower plate (52) are formed of different materials and dissimilar metal joining must be performed, the difficulty of the process increases, and it is difficult to secure reliable joining strength.
[0061] Accordingly, in this embodiment, the support frame (70) may be formed of the same material as the lower plate (52). In this embodiment, the lower plate (52) may be formed of a material containing aluminum, which has high thermal conductivity, to release heat generated from the battery cell to the outside. Accordingly, the support frame (70) of this embodiment may also be formed of a material containing the same aluminum as the lower plate (52).
[0062] In this embodiment, a rectangular tubular member may be used as the support frame (70). However, the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto, and can be modified into various shapes as long as they can be firmly fixed to the lower plate (52) and the blocking frame (80), respectively. However, considering the energy density of the battery pack (1), the width of the support frame (70) may be formed to be the same as or similar to the width of the blocking frame (80).
[0064] A blocking frame (80) is positioned on a support frame (70) and is positioned so that at least one side faces the cell stacks (10). For example, the blocking frame (80) may be positioned to face one side of the cell stacks (10) where a terminal (11) is positioned.
[0065] Generally, when a battery cell ignites or explodes inside a cell stack (10), the explosion byproducts, such as high-temperature gas, flames, or metal particles generated inside the cell stack (10), are ejected mainly around the terminals (11) of the cell stack (10) to the outside of the cell stack (10).
[0066] Accordingly, in the bulkhead member (60) of the present embodiment, a blocking frame (80) is disposed in the portion facing the cell stack (10). Specifically, the blocking frame (80) is disposed to face the terminal (11) of the cell stack (10), so that the explosive byproduct discharged from the cell stack (10) can come into contact with the blocking frame (80) first.
[0067] To this end, the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment is formed of a material that does not easily melt upon contact with explosion byproducts.
[0068] The blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment is formed from a material having a higher melting point than the support frame (70) or the lower plate (52). Specifically, the blocking frame (80) may be formed from a highly refractory material that melts at a temperature of 700°C or higher, and for this purpose, it may include a metal such as steel or an inorganic binder such as aerogel or synthetic mica. However, it is not limited thereto, and various materials that have rigidity similar to metal and do not melt at a temperature below 700°C may be used. In addition, the blocking frame (80) may be manufactured through post-processing treatments such as coating and heat treatment to reinforce heat resistance, fire resistance, strength, and rigidity.
[0070] The blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may include a lower frame (82) that is in surface contact with the upper surface of the support frame (70) and is coupled to the support frame (70), an upper frame (83) that is spaced apart from the lower frame (82) and arranged parallel to the lower frame (82), and a plate-shaped intermediate frame (84) that connects the upper frame (83) and the lower frame (82).
[0071] In this embodiment, one side of the intermediate frame (84) is connected to the center of the upper frame (83) and the other side is connected to the center of the lower frame (82). Accordingly, the blocking frame (80) of this embodiment can be formed so that its vertical cross-section has an 'I' shape, and due to this structure, the terminal (11) of the cell stack (10) can be positioned to face the central frame of the blocking frame (80).
[0072] The cell stack (10) is spaced apart from the blocking frame (80) by a certain distance. Accordingly, a void space of a certain size is formed between the upper frame (83) and the lower frame (82), that is, between the cell stack (10) and the middle frame (84), and in this embodiment, the said void space can be used as a venting channel (85).
[0073] The venting channel (85) can be used as a passage for explosive byproducts, such as gas, to move to the outside of the battery pack (1) when explosive byproducts are discharged from the cell stack (10) due to ignition of the battery cell, etc. Accordingly, the above-mentioned explosive byproducts can move to the side wall (51) of the pack case (50) through the venting channel (85) and then be discharged to the outside of the pack case (50) through the venting hole (55) provided in the side wall (51).
[0074] In this embodiment, the venting channel (85) may include a first venting channel (85a) positioned to face the first cell stack (10a) and a second venting channel (85b) positioned to face the second cell stack (10b). As shown in FIG. 5, in this embodiment, the first venting channel (85a) and the second venting channel (85b) may be separated by an intermediate frame (84) and may be arranged to be horizontally symmetric with respect to the intermediate frame (84). That is, the venting channel (85) of this embodiment may include two venting channels (85a, 85b) that are spatially separated by a partition member (60).
[0075] With this configuration, the first venting channel (85a) can be used as a passage for discharging explosion byproducts of the first cell stack (10a), and the second venting channel (85b) can be used as a passage for discharging byproducts of the second cell stack (10b). Therefore, even if a flame or thermal runaway occurs in the cell stack placed on one side of the intermediate frame (84), the impact on the cell stack on the other side can be minimized. However, the present invention is not limited to the above configuration and can be modified in various forms as described in the embodiments below.
[0076] Meanwhile, the pack case (50) may be provided with a passage through which explosive byproducts can move to a venting hole (55). The passage may be formed through the internal space of the side wall (51) or through the space between the side wall (51) and the cell stack (10). Thus, explosive byproducts introduced into the venting channel (85) can be discharged to the outside through the venting hole (55) after entering the passage. This minimizes the rapid propagation of flames / heat and the resulting secondary damage.
[0078] The blocking frame (80) can be fastened to the support frame (70) through fastening members (90), such as bolts and nuts. For example, the fastening members (90) can be fastened by partially penetrating the support frame (70) and the blocking frame (80) to fix the blocking frame (80) and the support frame (70) as a single unit. A plurality of fastening members (90) may be provided and fastened to the partition member (60) along the longitudinal direction of the partition member (60).
[0079] Accordingly, even if the blocking frame (80) and the support frame (70) are formed of different materials, they can be easily joined together. However, the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various joining methods may be used as long as the blocking frame (80) can be firmly joined to the support frame (70), such as joining the blocking frame (80) and the support frame (70) together using an adhesive or joining the blocking frame (80) to the support frame (70) using a sliding joining method.
[0080] When the blocking frame (80) and the support frame (70) are connected by a connecting member (90), a connecting space (81) in which the connecting member (90) is partially placed may be provided in the lower frame (82) of the blocking frame (80). To this end, the lower frame (82) of the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may be formed in the shape of a pipe. Similarly, a connecting space (71) may also be provided in the support frame (70). However, the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0082] In the battery pack (1) of the present embodiment configured as such, the partition member (60) is formed of a material with a higher melting point than the upper plate (53) or lower plate (52) of the pack case (50). Therefore, it does not easily melt even when in contact with explosive byproducts, and thus damage to the partition member (60) caused by explosive byproducts can be minimized, and thus flames or high-temperature gases can be spread to suppress secondary ignition or explosion.
[0083] Meanwhile, a configuration in which the entire pack case (50) is formed of the same material as the blocking frame (80) can also be considered, but in this case, the weight of the battery pack (1) may increase and the heat dissipation effect may be reduced.
[0084] On the other hand, the battery pack (1) of the present embodiment can have the lower plate (52) formed of aluminum material, so in addition to the above-mentioned effects, the weight can be minimized and at the same time high heat dissipation performance can be provided.
[0086] Meanwhile, the present invention is not limited to the aforementioned embodiments and various modifications are possible.
[0087] FIGS. 6 to 8 are cross-sectional views of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention, each showing a cross-section corresponding to FIG. 5 and illustrating an example in which the shape of the blocking frame (80) is modified.
[0088] First, referring to FIG. 6, the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may have a cross-section formed in a zigzag shape. Specifically, one side of the intermediate frame (84) may be connected to one side of the upper frame (83), and the other side may be connected to the other side of the lower frame (82). Additionally, the intermediate frame (84) may have at least one bent portion (B).
[0089] In this embodiment, the intermediate frame (84) has two bending portions (B), and at each bending portion (B), the intermediate frame (84) can be bent at 90°. Accordingly, the blocking frame (80) of this embodiment can have an overall cross-section formed in the shape of an 'L'.
[0090] In this case, two venting channels (85a, 85b) may be stacked in the vertical direction. Specifically, the first venting channel (85a), which is positioned to face the first cell stack (10a), may be positioned above or below the second venting channel (85b), which is positioned to face the second cell stack (10b).
[0091] Meanwhile, in this embodiment, an example is given in which a bent portion (B) is formed in the intermediate frame (84), but the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto, and it is also possible to form the intermediate frame (84) in the form of a flat plate by omitting the bent portion (B). In this case, the entire cross-section of the blocking frame (80) can be formed in a 'Z' shape.
[0093] Referring to FIG. 7, the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may have both sides of the middle frame (84) connected to one side of the upper frame (83) and one side of the lower frame (82), respectively. Accordingly, the overall cross-section of the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may be formed in a 'C' shape.
[0094] Also, referring to FIG. 8, the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may have two intermediate frames (84a, 84b) spaced apart. The intermediate frame (84) of the present embodiment may include a first intermediate frame (84a) connecting one side of the upper frame (83) and one side of the lower frame (82), and a second intermediate frame (84b) connecting the other side of the upper frame (83) and the other side of the lower frame (82). Accordingly, the overall cross-section of the blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may be formed in the shape of a 'ㅁ'.
[0095] In this case, the internal space of the blocking frame (80) can be used as a venting channel (85). Additionally, although not illustrated, the first intermediate frame (84a) or the second intermediate frame (84b) may be provided with an opening through which explosive byproducts can flow into the venting channel (85).
[0097] FIG. 9 is a cross-sectional view of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention, showing a cross-section corresponding to FIG. 5. FIG. 10 is an exploded perspective view of a bulkhead member shown in FIG. 9.
[0098] Referring to FIGS. 9 and 10, in the bulkhead member (60) of the present embodiment, the support frame (70) forms the overall frame of the bulkhead member (60), and the blocking frame (80) can be connected to the side of the support frame (70).
[0099] In this embodiment, the support frame (70) may be positioned such that one side is fixedly fastened to the lower plate (52) and the other side faces the upper plate (53). As with the previously described embodiment, the support frame (70) may be fastened to the lower plate (52) by means such as welding. Accordingly, the support frame (70) may be formed of the same material as the lower plate (52).
[0100] More specifically, the support frame (70) of the present embodiment may include a joint portion (72) joined to the lower plate (52) and a joint portion (74) joined to the blocking frame (80).
[0101] One side of the joint (72) is joined to the lower plate (52), and it can be configured similarly to the support frame (70) of FIG. 5 described above. However, it is not limited to this, and it can be modified into various shapes as long as it can be firmly fixed to the lower plate (52).
[0102] The joint portion (74) may be formed in a shape extending toward the upper plate (53) from the upper surface of the joint portion (72). In this embodiment, the joint portion (74) may be formed in the shape of a plate with both sides flat. However, it is not limited thereto, and it is also possible to configure it to have a curve as needed. Here, the two sides of the joint portion (74) refer to surfaces arranged to face the cell stack (10).
[0103] Additionally, the support frame (70) may include an extension (73) positioned on the upper part of the joint (74). Thus, the joint (74) may be positioned in a manner that connects the extension (73) and the joint (72).
[0104] The extension portion (73) is spaced apart from the joint portion (72) by a certain distance and can be formed in a shape that extends the thickness of the joint portion (74). Additionally, the width of the extension portion (73) can be formed to be similar or the same width as the joint portion (72).
[0105] In this embodiment, the connecting portion (74) connects the center of the extension portion (73) and the center of the joining portion (72). Accordingly, the support frame (70) of this embodiment may be formed in a shape similar to the blocking frame (80) shown in FIG. 5. For example, the extension portion (73) may be configured similarly to the upper frame (83) of the blocking frame (80) shown in FIG. 5, the connecting portion (74) may be configured similarly to the middle frame (84), and the joining portion (72) may be configured similarly to the lower frame (82) and the support frame (70) shown in FIG. 5.
[0106] Therefore, a void space may be formed between the extension (73) and the joint (72), and this void space may be used as a venting channel (85).
[0107] However, the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto, and, as with the embodiments of the blocking frame described above, the connecting part (74) can be connected to the extension part (73) and the joining part (72) in various forms.
[0109] The blocking frame (80) of the present embodiment may be provided in the form of a plate and stacked on the coupling part (74). Accordingly, the blocking frame (80) may be formed in the form of a plate corresponding to both sides of the coupling part (74).
[0110] In the cell stack (10) of the present embodiment, the terminal (11) may be positioned to face the blocking frame (80). To this end, the blocking frame (80) may be positioned over both sides of the coupling portion (74). However, the configuration of the present invention is not limited thereto, and it is also possible to configure the blocking frame (80) so that the coupling portion (74) is partially exposed as needed.
[0111] The blocking frame (80) and the support frame (70) may each be formed of the same material as in the previously described embodiment. For example, the blocking frame (80) may be formed of a material having a higher melting point than the support frame (70) or the lower plate (52).
[0112] The partition member (60) of the present embodiment configured in this manner can be manufactured by an insert injection method. For example, a blocking frame (80) can be prepared first and placed within a mold, and then a support frame (70) can be formed by a die-casting method to manufacture the blocking frame (80) and the support frame (70) as a single unit.
[0113] In this case, at least a portion of the blocking frame (80) may be embedded within the support frame (70). Specifically, the blocking frame (80) may include a embedded portion (88) embedded within the support frame (70). In this embodiment, the embedded portion (88) is embedded in the joint portion (72) and the extension portion (73) of the support frame (70), respectively; however, it is not limited thereto and may be configured to be embedded in the joint portion (74) as needed.
[0114] Meanwhile, the partition member (60) of the present embodiment is not limited to the configuration described above and can be manufactured in various ways.
