Description

Technology Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a diagnostic system and method for a secondary battery using a laser, and more specifically, to a technology that enables the production of high-quality secondary batteries by diagnosing internal defects of a secondary battery using a non-destructive technique via laser-based ultrasound. Background Technology

[0002] Secondary batteries have established themselves as an essential technological element for the development of future mobility technologies, including electric vehicles and urban air mobility, but safety accidents continue to occur in terms of safety performance.

[0003] Accordingly, verification of used secondary batteries is an essential element for ensuring safety and stable battery market growth.

[0004] Conventional battery management systems (BMS) have reached a limit in that they only perform the function of acquiring electrical signal information such as state-of-health (SOH) and state-of-charge (SOC) by referencing voltage, current, and temperature, and cannot perform secondary battery diagnosis regarding the detection and identification of local defects inside the battery.

[0005] To overcome these limitations, equipment that directly measures the internal structural characteristics of secondary batteries using X-ray technology or ultrasound has recently been developed, but such equipment is not only expensive but also difficult to verify results immediately.

[0006] In addition, ultrasound-based secondary battery defect diagnosis technology is not only advantageous in terms of cost but also has the advantage of being able to non-destructively diagnose internal battery characteristics using sound waves.

[0007] However, this is limited to single-position state verification using longitudinal waves in the thickness direction, and furthermore, the influence of signal noise caused by electrical coupling in pulser-receiver equipment acts as a constraint on the detection of echo signals in the thickness direction.

[0008] Accordingly, a new technical method is required that enables the prediction of failures that are difficult to detect in a BMS, and allows for economical, non-invasive, automated, and intuitive verification of the condition of each battery compartment, thereby preventing accidents related to secondary batteries and reliably predicting the remaining battery life.

[0009] Meanwhile, the aforementioned background technology is technical information that the inventor possessed for the derivation of the present invention or acquired during the process of deriving the present invention, and it cannot be considered as prior art disclosed to the general public prior to the filing of the present invention. Specific details for implementing the invention

[0050] Embodiments of the present invention are described below with reference to the attached drawings so that those skilled in the art can easily implement them. However, the present invention may be embodied in various different forms and is not limited to the embodiments described herein. Furthermore, in order to clearly explain the present invention in the drawings, parts unrelated to the explanation have been omitted, and similar parts throughout the specification are denoted by similar reference numerals.

[0051] The following embodiments specifically describe a configuration for diagnosing the soundness of a secondary battery by propagating ultrasound of acoustic energy generated by a reference laser based on a laser converter installed in each spatial section of the secondary battery into the secondary battery, converting the ultrasound received by a plurality of laser sensors into a reflected laser, and deriving the presence of defects and defect locations based on changes in local physical properties caused by defects inside the secondary battery (e.g., voids, delamination, and addition of impurities, etc.) based on the converted reflected laser and the reference laser.

[0052] FIG. 1 is a diagram showing a diagnostic system for a secondary battery to which an embodiment is applied, FIG. 2 is a detailed configuration diagram of the laser converter of FIG. 1, FIG. 3 is an example diagram showing the sensing path of the diagnostic system of FIG. 2, FIG. 4 is a detailed configuration diagram of the analysis device of FIG. 1, and FIG. 5 is a diagram showing the output of each part of the diagnostic system of FIG. 2. Referring to FIG. 1 to FIG. 5, the diagnostic system for a secondary battery according to an embodiment designates a secondary battery to be diagnosed as a diagnostic location (NXM) according to a predetermined spatial partition, installs a laser converter at a predetermined number of diagnostic locations among the designated multiple diagnostic locations, and buries a laser sensor at the remaining diagnostic locations excluding the predetermined number. Accordingly, the diagnostic system for a secondary battery is configured to convert a reference laser generated by a laser generator into an ultrasound of acoustic energy and propagate it into the secondary battery, convert the ultrasound reflected from the secondary battery into a reflected laser based on a laser converter, and then derive the defect and the location of the defect in the secondary battery using the converted reflected laser and the reference laser, and includes a laser generator (1), a laser converter (2), a laser sensor (3), and an analysis device (4).

[0053] Here, the laser generator (1) is installed outside the secondary battery and is installed so as to be movable to a diagnostic position embedded in the laser converter (2), and generates a laser of a predetermined reference wavelength and provides the generated reference laser to the laser converter (2).

[0054] And the laser converter (2) is implemented as a fiber converter and has a configuration that converts the received reference laser into ultrasound of acoustic energy and propagates it into the interior of the secondary battery, and with reference to FIG. 2, for example, the fiber converter is composed of a composite of carbon nanoparticles (21) and a flexible polymer (22).

[0055] Here, the carbon nanoparticles (21) are composed of, for example, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and nanoscale carbon particles, and effectively absorb light from a reference laser to convert light energy into heat energy in a very short time.

[0056] And, for example, the flexible polymer (22) can be composed of PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) or epoxy material, and absorbs thermal energy converted from carbon nanoparticles (121) to induce mechanical expansion and displacement, and rapidly diffuses through a reference laser with the induced high thermal expansion rate and high light transmittance.

[0057] As another example, the fiber optic transducer can be composed of a carbon nanoparticle-polymer composite, which can convert a reference laser into ultrasound of acoustic energy and amplify the magnitude of the ultrasound of the converted acoustic energy.

[0058] Meanwhile, the laser sensor (3) receives ultrasonic waves reflected due to internal defects in the secondary battery propagated by each laser converter (2) and converts the received ultrasonic waves into reflected lasers. At this time, referring to FIG. 3, for a single diagnostic location, the laser converter (2) and the laser sensor (3) can each receive a reference laser and a reflected laser. Accordingly, for each diagnostic location in a spatial section, at least one laser sensor is configured. Therefore, in the case of N laser converters (2) and M laser sensors (3), the total number of sensing paths is (N)X(M).

[0059] The ultrasound of the laser converter (2) and the laser sensor (3) is in the form of a pulse in which broadband frequency components occur for a short period of time, and the measurement frequency is a broadband signal including a Lamb wave and an object wave. Therefore, the ultrasound is in the form of a Lamb propagation that is induced parallel to the plane direction of the secondary battery. That is, the path of the ultrasound propagates into the secondary battery parallel to the plane of the secondary battery.

[0060] In addition, the laser sensor (3) may further include a Low Pass Filter (LPF) with a cutoff frequency set to a wavelength of a Rampa that is greater than the thickness of the target structure, and the ultrasound passing through the LPF is converted into a reflected laser by an optical fiber invert converter and provided to an analysis device (4). Although the series of processes for converting ultrasound into a laser form by an optical fiber invert converter is not specifically stated in this specification, it should be understood by those skilled in the art.

[0061] The analysis device (4) is configured to derive local physical property characteristic changes, including structural and chemical changes caused by defects in the secondary battery, based on the received reflected laser and reference laser of the laser sensor (3). Referring to FIG. 4, the analysis device (4) may include at least one of a state index generation module (41), a state image acquisition module (42), and a learning module (43).

[0062] That is, the state index generation module (41) derives a state index (SI) based on the correlation coefficient between the received reflected laser and the reference laser, the difference between the received reflected laser and the reference laser, and the wavelet function for the reflected laser and the reference laser.

[0063] Although the series of processes for deriving a State Index (SI) based on the correlation coefficient between the reflected laser and the reference laser, the difference between the reflected laser and the reference laser, and the wavelet function for the reflected laser and the reference laser are not specifically stated in this specification, it will be understood by those skilled in the art.

[0064] And, the state index (SI) generated for each sensor path is provided to the state image acquisition module (42).

[0065] The state image acquisition module (42) synthesizes the state images of each received sensing path and then applies a spatial function of the secondary battery surface coordinates to visualize the image intensity to derive the final state image. At this time, the synthesis of the state index can be derived from the following relationship 1.

[0066] [Relationship 1]

[0067]

[0068] Here, assuming there are N laser converters (2) and M laser sensors, SI is the state index of each of the M laser sensors (3), Wi is a predetermined weight, and i is a sensing path of each of the M laser sensors (3), ranging from 1 to N. N and M are each natural numbers greater than 0.

[0069] Referring to FIG. 5, a significant difference between the reflected laser and the measured laser can be represented as an image intensity of color temperature when compared with the measured laser in a sound state, and the image intensity is expressed as an index to output a state image for the target secondary battery. By quantifying the image pixel values of the state image, a local state map corresponding to the criteria for determining whether an abnormal state of the secondary battery occurs in each spatial section can be identified, and accordingly, in one embodiment, the presence of internal defects in the secondary battery and the location of the defects can be intuitively confirmed.

[0070] Meanwhile, the learning module (43) can estimate the degree of degradation and remaining lifespan of a secondary battery by learning based on a pre-established learning model using a visualized state image as input. At this time, the learning model can accelerate performance degradation of a secondary battery with verified soundness through an accelerated life tester and obtain a state image derived from it as reference data, then perform verification of the final state image based on the obtained reference data and the input state image, and estimate the remaining lifespan of the secondary battery based on the state image.

[0071] Accordingly, in one embodiment, by diagnosing internal defects of secondary batteries by space compartment using a non-destructive technique, it is possible to diagnose internal defects (such as voids, peeling, and the addition of impurities inside secondary batteries under post-use conditions) that are difficult to diagnose with existing battery management system-based electrical state diagnosis technology for secondary batteries, thereby reducing the rate of safety accidents. Additionally, secondary batteries whose soundness has been verified through the diagnosis of internal defects can be reused, and waste batteries whose soundness has been verified through the verification of internal defects can be recycled, thereby increasing the recycling rate of secondary batteries.

[0072] Meanwhile, FIG. 6 is a flowchart showing the diagnostic process of a secondary battery of FIG. 1, and the diagnostic process of a secondary battery using a laser according to another embodiment of the present invention is explained with reference to FIG. 1 to 8.

[0073] Based on the first step (S11 to S13), a laser generator (1) of one embodiment is installed outside a secondary battery to be diagnosed to generate a reference laser of a predetermined pulse, and the generated reference laser is irradiated onto a laser converter (2) embedded in a predetermined number of diagnostic locations among the diagnostic locations in each spatial section, and the irradiated reference laser is converted into ultrasound of acoustic energy, and the converted ultrasound propagates parallel to the plane of the secondary battery.

[0074] And in step (S14, S15), the laser sensor (3) of one embodiment converts the ultrasound reflected based on the internal defect of the secondary battery into a pulsed reflected laser, and generates a state index for each spatial section based on the converted reflected laser and the reference laser.

[0075] Based on steps (S16, S17), the analysis device (4) of one embodiment can visualize the state index by spatial section as image intensity, acquire a final state image, and derive whether there is a defect in the secondary battery and the location of the defect based on the final state image.

[0076] Next, according to steps (S18, S19), the analysis device (4) of one embodiment can perform verification of the final state image by learning based on a learning model with the final state image as input, and can predict the remaining lifespan based on the final state image that has been verified.

[0077] Accordingly, one embodiment diagnoses internal defects of secondary batteries by space compartment using a non-destructive technique, thereby enabling the diagnosis of internal defects that are difficult to diagnose with existing battery management system-based electrical state diagnosis technology for secondary batteries, which can reduce the rate of safety accidents, and allows for the reuse of secondary batteries whose soundness has been verified through the diagnosis of internal defects, and increases the recycling rate of secondary batteries by recycling waste batteries whose soundness has been verified through the verification of internal defects.

[0078] For ease of understanding, the processor is sometimes described as being used as a single unit, but a person of ordinary skill in the art will understand that the processing unit may include multiple processing elements and / or multiple types of processing elements. For example, the processor may include multiple processors or one processor and one controller. In addition, other processing configurations, such as a parallel processor, are also possible.
