Description

Technology Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a copper smelting technology for recovering copper metal from copper concentrate, and more specifically, to a method for recovering copper metal and elemental sulfur through a single process in which a selective chlorination process for selectively removing iron (Fe) contained in copper concentrate and a molten salt electrolysis process for recovering copper from the chalcopyrite (Cu2S) produced thereby are simultaneously performed in the same reactor. Background Technology

[0002] Copper is an essential metal used in various industrial sectors, including the electrical and electronics, construction, automotive, and energy industries. Consequently, smelting technologies utilizing copper sulfide ore as a raw material are widely employed to ensure a stable supply of copper resources. In particular, chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂, hereinafter referred to as "copper concentrate") is utilized as an important copper concentrate due to its high copper content; however, since it contains large amounts of iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) in addition to copper, the removal of iron and sulfur during the smelting process is essential.

[0003] Conventional processes for producing copper metal and pure sulfur using selective chlorination and molten salt electrolysis involved producing chalcotinide by removing iron from copper concentrate through the selective chlorination of copper concentrate and metal chlorides, and then producing copper metal and pure sulfur through a molten salt electrolysis process using the produced chalcotinide as a raw material. However, these processes had problems such as equipment complexity, increased energy consumption, and reduced process efficiency during the separation between processes and the recovery of intermediates.

[0004] In addition, when the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process are performed sequentially, there were limitations such as reduced continuity because the chalcopyrite generated through the selective chlorination process must be transferred back to the electrolysis process, and complex process control due to the separation of chlorides and reaction products after the chlorination process. In particular, in conventional technology where the selective chlorination process and the electrolysis process are performed independently, it was difficult to fully utilize the advantages of process integration.

[0005] To solve these problems, the applicant has developed a copper smelting process technology in which the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process are performed simultaneously in a single reactor rather than sequentially, thereby minimizing losses of process steps, equipment, and raw materials, and improving energy efficiency and process stability. Effects of the invention

[0034] According to the present invention, by simultaneously performing a selective chlorination process and a molten salt electrolysis process within the same reactor using copper concentrate as a raw material, copper metal can be recovered without the need to perform the selective chlorination process and the electrolysis process separately as in the conventional method. Accordingly, the process separation and intermediate recovery steps become unnecessary, simplifying the process configuration and improving process operation efficiency.

Specific details for implementing the invention

[0039] Preferred embodiments according to the present invention will be described in detail below with reference to the attached drawings.

[0040] The advantages and features of the present invention and the method for achieving them will become clear by referring to the embodiments described in detail below together with the accompanying drawings.

[0041] However, the present invention is not limited by the embodiments disclosed below but may be implemented in various different forms, and these embodiments are provided merely to make the disclosure of the present invention complete and to fully inform those skilled in the art of the scope of the invention, and the present invention is defined only by the scope of the claims.

[0042] In addition, in describing the present invention, if it is determined that related known technologies, etc., may obscure the essence of the present invention, a detailed explanation thereof will be omitted.

[0043] The present invention will be described in detail below.

[0044] Figure 1 is a process flow diagram of a process for manufacturing copper metal and elemental sulfur from copper sulfite according to the present invention.

[0045] With reference to FIG. 1, the present invention is a process integration technology that enables the stable recovery of high-purity copper metal and elemental sulfur without process separation by reacting a molten salt containing CuCl with copper concentrate (CuFeS₂) to simultaneously perform a selective chlorination process for removing iron (Fe) components from the concentrate and a molten salt electrolysis process for recovering copper within the same reactor.

[0046] The present invention relates to a method for recovering copper metal and elemental sulfur from copper sulfite by performing a selective chlorination process and a molten salt electrolysis process as a single process.

[0047] A selective chlorination process that reacts a molten salt containing CuCl with a copper concentrate to convert and remove iron (Fe) components contained in the copper concentrate into the form of FeCl2, and

[0048] A molten salt electrolysis process that recovers copper metal and elemental sulfur by applying an electric current to a molten salt containing molten chalcotinide produced through the above selective chlorination process

[0049] It is characterized by being performed simultaneously within the same reactor.

[0050] In one embodiment of the present invention, the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process are preferably performed in a temperature range of 423 K to 473 K.

[0051] In one embodiment of the present invention, during the process in which the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process are performed simultaneously, the co-deposited iron (Fe) component reacts with CuCl to be converted into FeCl2 and removed, thereby not affecting the purity of the recovered copper metal.

[0052] In addition, the present invention relates to a method for recovering copper metal and elemental sulfur from copper sulfite by performing a selective chlorination process and a molten salt electrolysis process as a single process.

[0053] (a) A step of mixing a metal salt containing CuCl and a copper ore in a reactor and then melting them;

[0054] (b) a step of converting and removing the iron (Fe) component contained in the copper concentrate in the reactor into the form of FeCl2 through a selective chlorination process with CuCl; and

[0055] (c) a step of recovering copper metal and elemental sulfur by applying an electric current to the molten salt in which the chalcopyrite produced through the above selective chlorination process is molten to perform a molten salt electrolysis process; comprising,

[0056] Steps (b) and (c) above are characterized by being performed simultaneously within the same reactor.

[0057] Hereinafter, each step of the manufacturing method of the present invention will be described in detail.

[0058] (a) A step of mixing a metal salt containing CuCl and copper ore in a reactor and then melting them.

[0059] According to one embodiment of the present invention, it is preferable to charge the metal salt containing CuCl and the copper concentrate together into a crucible in a reactor, then melt the metal salt in a temperature range of 423 K to 473 K to form a molten salt, and then perform a selective chlorination process by contacting the copper concentrate in the molten salt state.

[0060] It is preferable to use the metal salt containing the above CuCl in lump form after drying at 373 K for 12 hours, melting at 473 K for 6 hours, and cooling.

[0061] The above-mentioned copper concentrate can be directly fed into the reactor without a separate pretreatment process, and the copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) components contained in the copper concentrate can simultaneously participate in the selective chlorination process and molten salt electrolysis process carried out in the subsequent stage.

[0062] At this time, the reactor is configured so that the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process can proceed simultaneously within the same space, allowing the next step to be performed continuously without process separation or intermediate recovery after the charging of the concentrate.

[0063] In one embodiment of the present invention, the metal salt may be a mixed salt comprising CuCl as a basic component and additionally comprising KCl and / or NH4Cl as needed.

[0064] In one embodiment of the present invention, the mass ratio of CuCl:KCl or CuCl:NH4Cl in the metal salt is preferably in the range of 1:0.2 to 1:2, respectively.

[0065] (b) The iron (Fe) component contained in the copper concentrate in the reactor is converted into FeCl through a selective chlorination process with CuCl. 2 Step of converting to and removing into a form

[0066] In step (a) above, the copper ore charged into the reactor through melting comes into contact with a molten salt containing CuCl, and the iron (Fe) component contained in the copper ore is converted into FeCl2 through a selective chlorination process with CuCl.

[0067] In this step, the selective chlorination process is a reaction that selectively chlorinates iron components while minimizing the loss of copper components, so that FeCl2 dissolves in the molten salt or volatilizes, allowing iron components to be effectively separated from the copper ore.

[0068] In the present invention, the selective chlorination process is not performed as a separate pretreatment process but proceeds simultaneously with the molten salt electrolysis process within the same reactor. Accordingly, the next step can be performed continuously without process separation or intermediate recovery.

[0069] In addition, although some iron components may co-deposit on the cathode during the electrolysis process as the selective chlorination process proceeds, these iron components react with CuCl under electrolytic conditions to be converted back into FeCl2 and removed, thereby having no substantial effect on the purity of the finally recovered copper metal.

[0070] (c) A step of recovering copper metal and elemental sulfur by performing a molten salt electrolysis process by applying an electric current to the molten salt containing the molten chalcopyrite produced through the above selective chlorination process.

[0071] While the selective chlorination process of step (b) above is in progress, an electric current is applied to the molten salt in the reactor to perform a molten salt electrolysis process. At this time, the molten salt electrolysis process can be performed through an electrode configuration including a cathode made of copper and an anode made of carbon, and copper ions in the molten salt are reduced by the application of electric current and electrodeposited in the form of copper metal on the surface of the cathode.

[0072] Since the molten salt electrolysis process according to the present invention is performed simultaneously with the selective chlorination process in the same reactor, the state in which FeCl2 generated by the selective chlorination process exists in the molten salt is maintained during the electrolysis process. Accordingly, although some iron components may co-deposit on the cathode during the electrolysis process, the said iron components react with CuCl under electrolytic conditions to be converted back into the form of FeCl2 and removed, thereby having no substantial effect on the purity of the copper metal electrodeposited on the cathode.

[0073] The above electrolytic conditions can be adjusted according to the purpose of the process, but the electrolytic temperature can be maintained in the range of 423 K to 473 K, and the current density can be set in the range of 0.01 A / cm² to 0.02 A / cm². Under these conditions, high-purity copper metal is stably electrodeposited on the cathode, and copper recovery quality equivalent to that of the conventional process can be secured even though it is a single process in which the selective chlorination process and the electrolytic process are performed simultaneously.

[0074] In one embodiment of the present invention, copper metal is electrodeposited on the cathode by the molten salt electrolysis, and elemental sulfur is generated on the anode.

[0075] As described above, in step (a), the copper ore is mixed with a metal salt containing CuCl and then melted; in step (b), the iron (Fe) component contained in the copper ore is converted and removed in the form of FeCl2 by a selective chlorination process with CuCl in the molten salt, and at the same time, in step (c), an electric current is applied to the molten salt to perform a molten salt electrolysis process, thereby reducing the copper component in the molten salt and electrodepositing it as copper metal on the cathode.

[0076] In the present invention, since the selective chlorination process of step (b) and the molten salt electrolysis process of step (c) are performed simultaneously within the same reactor with temporal overlap, equipment complexity and process losses caused by process separation can be prevented, and the problem of co-deposition of iron (Fe) components is also naturally resolved through re-reaction with CuCl during the electrolysis process.

[0077] As a result, despite the stepwise process configuration, high-purity copper metal equivalent to that of conventional processes can be continuously recovered without process separation or intermediate recovery steps.

[0078] The present invention will be explained in more detail below through examples. However, the following examples are intended to explain the invention more specifically and do not limit the scope of the invention. The following examples may be appropriately modified or changed by those skilled in the art within the scope of the invention.

[0079] The reactor structure, electrode configuration, molten salt composition, electrolytic conditions, measurement method, and experimental procedure used in the following examples are identical to the electrolytic process of chalcopper ore using the molten salt electrolytic smelting method. The present invention has technical significance in that it uses copper concentrate instead of chalcopper ore (Cu₂S) as a raw material, and the iron component in the copper concentrate is removed by a selective chlorination process that proceeds simultaneously with the molten salt electrolytic process.

[0080] Examples 1 to 4: Selective Chlorination-Molten Salt Electrolysis Simultaneous Reaction Process Using Copper Cinnabar as a Raw Material

[0081] In this embodiment, copper metal was recovered by simultaneously carrying out a selective chlorination process and a molten salt electrolysis process in the same reactor using copper ore as a raw material.

[0082] FIG. 2 is (a) a schematic diagram and (b) a photograph of an apparatus in which a different selective chlorination and molten salt electrolysis process is performed according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0083] First, as shown in Fig. 2, CuCl and KCl were mixed in a PYREX reactor and then loaded into an Al₂O₃ crucible. After drying at 373 K for 12 hours, the mixture was melted at 473 K for 6 hours, cooled, separated from the crucible in a glove box, and surface impurities were removed. At this time, the CuCl-KCl mixed salt was prepared by mixing 360.0 g of CuCl and 140.0 g of KCl.

[0084] The melting point of the above CuCl-KCl mixed salt is approximately 423 K, which is about 1,100 K lower than the commercial copper manufacturing process temperature of 1,573 K, making it advantageous for reducing process energy. In addition, by performing electrolysis under conditions of 473 K, the loss of electrolytic salt due to the volatilization of CuCl can be prevented.

[0085] Afterwards, copper concentrate was charged into the reactor filled with the above-mentioned mixed salt at 5% by weight (25.0 g) relative to the total weight of the mixed salt, a cathode made of copper (Cu) and an anode made of graphite (C) were connected, and the inside of the reactor was evacuated for a certain period of time using a vacuum pump, and then argon (Ar) gas was injected to reach an internal pressure of 1 atm, and then Ar gas was flowed so that the internal pressure could be maintained at 1 atm while the reaction proceeded.

[0086] Subsequently, the reactor temperature was raised to reach 473 K, and after the mixed salt was completely melted inside the reactor, the process was maintained for 1 to 48 hours to carry out a selective chlorination process, so that the iron (Fe) component contained in the copper concentrate was converted and removed in the form of FeCl₂ through a selective chlorination process with CuCl. Then, an external power source was applied to start the electrolysis process. That is, in this embodiment, the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process were carried out simultaneously within the same reactor, overlapping in time. Electrolysis was performed under a temperature condition of 473 K, and the current density was set to 0.01 A / cm². Through the electrolysis, copper metal was electrodeposited on the cathode, and pure sulfur was generated at the anode.

[0087] At this time, a copper plate (10 mm × 100 mm) was used for the copper cathode, and a C rod (diameter 8 mm, length 50 mm) was used for the anode. In addition, a copper cube (Cu cube) was placed at the bottom of the Al₂O₃ crucible, and the Cu cathode and C anode were each connected to lead wires through Ni wires shielded by an Al₂O₃ protective tube.

[0088] Although some iron components may be co-deposited on the cathode during electrolysis, these iron components reacted with CuCl under electrolytic conditions to be converted back into FeCl₂, thus having no substantial effect on the purity of the recovered copper metal.

[0089] At this time, the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process were carried out in temporal overlap within the same reactor without separate process separation, and the current efficiency and purity of recovered copper according to the selective chlorination holding time (1 to 48 hours) are shown in Table 1 below.

[0090] In Table 1 below, current efficiency was calculated by dividing the measured weight of the recovered copper by the theoretically recoverable weight of copper and multiplying by 100. The purity of the recovered copper was calculated by excluding the sum of the impurity components listed in the table. The content of each metal element was analyzed using glow discharge mass spectrometry (GD-MS), and components marked “ND” in the table indicate that they were not detected at less than 0.005 wt%. Additionally, other elements not listed in the table were also confirmed to be below the detection limit based on GD-MS analysis results. The content of sulfur (S) was measured using a carbon / sulfur determinator.

[0092] FIG. 3 shows photographs of copper metal (Cu) recovered by performing a selective chlorination process and a molten salt electrolysis process using copper ore as a raw material according to an embodiment of the present invention. Here, (a) shows the case where the selective chlorination process was performed for 1 hour, (b) shows the case where it was performed for 6 hours, (c) shows the case where it was performed for 24 hours, and (d) shows the case where it was performed for 48 hours, respectively, and for all of (a) to (d), molten salt electrolysis was performed at 473 K for 24 hours.

[0093] Referring to Table 1 and Figure 3 above, when electrolysis was performed under conditions where the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process were carried out simultaneously in the same reactor, with the holding time of the selective chlorination process varying from 1 to 48 hours, the current efficiency was 84.62 to 94.72%, which is about 5 to 10% lower than when electrolysis was performed using chalcopper ore produced through the selective chlorination process as a raw material.

[0094] However, there was no substantial difference in the purity of the recovered copper metal compared to that recovered through copper electrolysis. This is believed to be because, although some iron (Fe) components may co-deposit during the selective chlorination process which proceeds simultaneously with electrolysis, these iron components react with CuCl during the electrolysis to be converted into FeCl₂ and removed, thereby not affecting the purity of the finally recovered copper metal.

[0095] Therefore, the copper metal recovered according to the present invention can maintain a high purity equivalent to that of the copper electrolytic process while simultaneously achieving the benefits of process integration.

[0096] Experimental Example 1: Process Stability Evaluation

[0097] The flue gas generated during the electrolysis process was collected and analyzed for the presence of SO₂ and Cl₂ gases. As a result, no SO₂ or Cl₂ gases were detected during the molten salt electrolysis, indicating that the process of the present invention is an environmentally friendly and stable copper smelting process.

[0098] Although specific embodiments regarding a method for recovering copper metal and elemental sulfur from copper sulfite by performing the selective chlorination process and the molten salt electrolysis process according to the present invention as a single process have been described so far, it is obvious that various modifications are possible within the scope of the present invention.

[0099] Therefore, the scope of the present invention should not be limited to the described embodiments, but should be defined by the claims set forth below as well as equivalents thereof.

[0100] That is, the aforementioned embodiments should be understood as exemplary in all respects and not limiting, and the scope of the invention is defined by the claims set forth below rather than by the detailed description, and all modifications or variations derived from the meaning and scope of the claims and equivalent concepts thereof should be interpreted as being included within the scope of the invention.
