Description

Technology Field

[0001] The present invention relates to wireless charging, and more specifically, to a wireless power transmission and reception device. Background Technology

[0003] Wireless power transmission technology is a technology that transmits power wirelessly between a power source and an electronic device. For example, wireless power transmission technology enables the battery of a wireless terminal, such as a smartphone or tablet, to be charged simply by placing it on a wireless charging pad, thereby providing superior mobility, convenience, and safety compared to the existing wired charging environment using wired charging connectors. In addition to wireless charging of wireless terminals, wireless power transmission technology is attracting attention as a potential replacement for the existing wired power transmission environment in various fields, including electric vehicles, various wearable devices such as Bluetooth earphones and 3D glasses, home appliances, furniture, underground facilities, buildings, medical devices, robots, and leisure.

[0004] Wireless power transmission methods are also referred to as contactless power transmission methods, no point of contact power transmission methods, or wireless charging methods. A wireless power transmission system consists of a wireless power transmission device that supplies electrical energy via a wireless power transmission method, and a wireless power receiving device that receives electrical energy supplied wirelessly from the wireless power transmission device and supplies power to a receiving device such as a battery cell.

[0005] Wireless power transmission technology is broadly classified into magnetic induction and magnetic resonance methods. Magnetic induction is a method of transmitting energy by utilizing the current induced in the receiving coil due to the magnetic field generated by the battery cell of the transmitting coil, resulting from the electromagnetic coupling between the transmitting and receiving coils. While magnetic induction wireless power transmission technology has the advantage of high transmission efficiency, it has the disadvantage that the power transmission distance is limited to a few millimeters, and the positional freedom is significantly low due to extreme sensitivity to coil alignment.

[0006] The magnetic resonance method is similar to the magnetic induction method in that it utilizes a magnetic field. However, the magnetic resonance method differs from magnetic induction in that energy is transferred through the phenomenon where a magnetic field is concentrated at both ends of the transmitting and receiving sides when a specific resonant frequency is applied to the coils on the transmitting and receiving sides, causing resonance. Due to these characteristics of magnetic resonance, power can be transmitted over long distances, unlike magnetic induction. This magnetic resonance method is expected to be a wireless power transmission technology capable of realizing true cord-free operation, as it not only enables energy transmission over relatively long distances ranging from tens of centimeters to several meters compared to magnetic induction but also allows power to be transmitted to multiple devices simultaneously. [0025] As used below, the term "wireless power" refers to any form of energy associated with electric, magnetic, or electromagnetic fields transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver without the use of physical electromagnetic conductors. Wireless power may also be referred to as a power signal and may mean an oscillating magnetic flux enclosed by a primary coil and a secondary coil. For example, power conversion in a system for wirelessly charging devices including mobile phones, cordless phones, iPods, MP3 players, and headsets is described here. In general, the basic principles of wireless power transmission include, for example, both magnetic induction and magnetic resonance.

[0026] FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a wireless power system (1000) according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0027] Referring to FIG. 1, a wireless power system (1000) includes a wireless power transmission device (1100), a wireless power receiving device (1200), and a wireless power transmission and reception device (1300). The wireless power system (1000) can transmit power wirelessly using a magnetic field. Wireless transmission of power can be performed using a magnetic induction method or a magnetic resonance method. At this time, it can be performed between the transmission antenna (1120) of the wireless power transmission device (1100) and the receiving antenna (1210) of the wireless power receiving device (1200).

[0028] A wireless power transmission device (1100) generates a magnetic field by receiving power from an external power source (S). A wireless power receiving device (1200) generates current using the generated magnetic field and receives power wirelessly. A wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) can receive power wirelessly using the generated magnetic field similar to that of a wireless power receiving device (1200). Additionally, a wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) can generate a magnetic field similar to that of a wireless power transmission device (1100). In this case, the wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) can generate a magnetic field using power stored in a battery instead of an external power source. The wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) may be a relay or a repeater to increase the wireless power transmission distance. As a repeater, a passive type resonant loop implemented with an LC circuit may be used. Such a resonant loop can increase the wireless power transmission distance by focusing the magnetic field radiated into the atmosphere. It is also possible to secure wider wireless power transmission coverage by using multiple repeaters simultaneously.

[0029] Accordingly, as illustrated in FIG. 1, power is transferred from a wireless power transmission device (1100) to a wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) in a wireless power system (1000), and the wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) can then transfer power to a wireless power reception device (1200).

[0030] Additionally, in the wireless power system (1000), the wireless power transmission device (1100), the wireless power receiving device (1200), and the wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) can transmit and receive various information necessary for wireless power transmission. Here, communication between the wireless power transmission device (1100), the wireless power receiving device (1200), and the wireless power transmission and reception device (1300) can be performed according to either in-band communication using a magnetic field used for wireless power transmission or out-band communication using a separate communication carrier.

[0031] Here, the wireless power transmission device (1100) may be provided as a fixed or mobile type. Examples of the fixed type include being embedded in a ceiling or wall or furniture such as a table indoors, being installed as an implant in an outdoor parking lot, bus stop or subway station, or being installed in a means of transportation such as a vehicle or train. The mobile wireless power transmission device (1100) may be implemented as part of another device, such as a portable device of a movable weight or size, or a laptop computer cover.

[0032] In addition, the wireless power receiving device (1200) and the wireless power transmitting and receiving device (1300) should be interpreted as a comprehensive concept that includes various electronic devices equipped with batteries and various home appliances that are powered wirelessly instead of using power cables. Representative examples of the wireless power receiving device (1200) include portable terminals, cellular phones, smartphones, personal digital assistants (PDA), portable media players (PMP), Wibro terminals, tablets, pablets, notebooks, digital cameras, navigation terminals, televisions, and electric vehicles (EVs).

[0033] In a wireless power system (1000), there may be one or multiple wireless power receiving device (1200) and wireless power transmitting / receiving device (1300). In FIG. 1, the wireless power transmitting device (1100), wireless power receiving device (1200), and wireless power transmitting / receiving device (1300) are depicted as exchanging power one-to-one, but it is also possible for a single wireless power transmitting device (1100) to transmit power to multiple wireless power receiving devices (1200) or multiple wireless power transmitting / receiving devices (1300). In particular, when wireless power transmission is performed using a magnetic resonance method, a single wireless power transmitting device (1100) can transmit power to multiple wireless power receiving devices (1200) or wireless power transmitting / receiving devices (1300) simultaneously by applying a simultaneous transmission method or a time-division transmission method.

[0034] Additionally, although FIG. 1 illustrates a wireless power transmission device (1100) transmitting power to a wireless power transmission / reception device (1300) and a wireless power transmission / reception device (1300) transmitting power to a wireless power reception device (1200), it is also possible for the wireless power transmission device (1100) to transmit power directly to the wireless power reception device (1200) or to transmit power to both the wireless power reception device (1200) and the wireless power transmission / reception device (1300).

[0035] Hereinafter, a wireless power transmission device (1100) and a wireless power receiving device (1200) according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described.

[0036] FIG. 2 is a block diagram of a wireless power transmission device (1100) according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0037] Referring to FIG. 2, the wireless power transmission device (1100) may include a power transmission module (1110), a transmission antenna (1120), a communication module (1130), and a controller (1140).

[0038] The power transmission module (1110) can generate transmission power using power applied from an external power source (S). The power transmission module (1110) may include an AC-DC converter (1111), a frequency oscillator (1112), a power amplifier (1113), and an impedance matcher (1114).

[0039] The AC-DC converter (1111) can convert alternating current power into direct current power. The AC-DC converter (1111) receives alternating current power from an external power source (S), converts the waveform of the input alternating current power into direct current power, and outputs it. The AC-DC converter (1111) can adjust the voltage value of the output direct current power.

[0040] The frequency oscillator (1112) can convert DC power into AC power of a desired specific frequency. The frequency oscillator (1112) receives DC power output from the AC-DC converter (1111) and converts the received DC power into AC power of a specific frequency and outputs it. Here, the specific frequency may be a resonant frequency. At this time, the frequency oscillator (1112) can output AC power of the resonant frequency. Of course, the frequency oscillator (1112) is not required to oscillate at the resonant frequency.

[0041] The power amplifier (1113) can amplify the voltage or current of the power.

[0042] The power amplifier (1113) receives AC power of a specific frequency output by the frequency oscillator (1112) and amplifies and outputs the voltage or current of the input AC power of the specific frequency.

[0043] The impedance matching unit (1114) can perform impedance matching. The impedance matching unit (1114) may include a capacitor, an inductor, and a switching element that switches the connection thereof. Impedance matching can be performed by detecting a reflected wave of wireless power transmitted through a transmission antenna (1120), and by switching the switching element based on the detected reflected wave to adjust the connection state of the capacitor or inductor, or to adjust the capacitance of the capacitor, or to adjust the inductance of the inductor. In some cases, the impedance matching unit (1114) may be omitted, and the present specification also includes an embodiment of a wireless power transmission device (1100) in which the impedance matching unit (1114) is omitted.

[0044] The transmission antenna (1120) can generate an electromagnetic field using alternating current power. The transmission antenna (1120) receives alternating current power of a specific frequency output from the power amplifier (1113) and, accordingly, can generate a magnetic field of a specific frequency. The generated magnetic field is radiated, and the wireless power receiving device (1200) receives it to generate current. In other words, the transmission antenna (1120) transmits power wirelessly.

[0045] In the case of using a magnetic induction method, the transmitting antenna (1120) or the receiving antenna (1210) may have any suitable shape as a coil structure, for example, a copper wire wound around a high-permeability material such as ferrite or amorphous metal. The transmitting antenna (1120) may be called a primary coil, primary core, primary winding, primary loop antenna, etc. Meanwhile, the receiving antenna (1210) may be called a secondary coil, secondary core, secondary winding, secondary loop antenna, pickup antenna, etc.

[0046] When using a magnetic resonance method, the transmitting antenna (1120) and the receiving antenna (1210) may each be provided in the form of a resonant antenna. The resonant antenna may have a resonant structure including a coil and a capacitor. In this case, the resonant frequency of the resonant antenna is determined by the inductance of the coil and the capacitance of the capacitor. Here, the coil may be formed in the form of a loop. Also, a core may be placed inside the loop. The core may include a physical core such as a ferrite core or an air core.

[0047] Energy transfer between the transmitting antenna (1120) and the receiving antenna (1210) can be achieved through the phenomenon of magnetic field resonance. The resonance phenomenon refers to a phenomenon in which, when a near-field corresponding to the resonance frequency is generated at one resonance antenna and another resonance antenna is located nearby, the two resonance antennas are coupled to each other, resulting in high-efficiency energy transfer between the resonance antennas. When a magnetic field corresponding to the resonance frequency is generated between the resonance antenna of the transmitting antenna (1120) and the resonance antenna of the receiving antenna (1210), a phenomenon occurs in which the resonance antennas of the transmitting antenna (1120) and the receiving antenna (1210) resonate with each other. Consequently, compared to the case where the magnetic field generated by the transmitting antenna (1120) is radiated into free space in the general case, the magnetic field is focused toward the receiving antenna (1210) with higher efficiency, and thus energy can be transferred from the transmitting antenna (1120) to the receiving antenna (1210) with high efficiency. The magnetic induction method can be implemented similarly to the magnetic resonance method, but in this case, the frequency of the magnetic field does not need to be the resonance frequency. Instead, in the magnetic induction method, alignment between the loops constituting the receiving antenna (1210) and the transmitting antenna (1120) is required, and the spacing between the loops must be very close.

[0048] Meanwhile, although not shown in FIG. 2, the wireless power transmission device (1100) may further include a communication antenna. The communication antenna can transmit and receive communication signals using a communication carrier other than magnetic field communication. For example, the communication antenna can transmit and receive communication signals such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, ZigBee, and NFC.

[0049] The communication module (1130) can transmit and receive information with a wireless power receiving device (1200) or a wireless power transmitting and receiving device (1300). The communication module (1130) may include at least one of an in-band communication module or an out-band communication module.

[0050] An in-band communication module can transmit and receive information using magnetic waves with a specific frequency as the center frequency. For example, the communication module (1130) can perform in-band communication by transmitting information carried on magnetic waves through a transmission antenna (1120) or by receiving magnetic waves containing information through a transmission antenna (1120). At this time, information can be carried on magnetic waves or magnetic waves containing information can be interpreted using modulation methods such as binary phase shift keying (BPSK) or amplitude shift keying (ASK) and coding methods such as Manchester coding or non-return-to-zero level (NZR-L) coding. By using such in-band communication, the communication module (1130) can transmit and receive information over a distance of several meters at a data transmission rate of several kbps.

[0051] The out-band communication module may also perform out-band communication through a communication antenna. For example, the communication module (1130) may be provided as a short-range communication module. Examples of short-range communication modules include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, ZigBee, NFC, etc.

[0052] The controller (1140) can control the overall operation of the wireless power transmission device (1100). The controller (1140) can perform calculations and processing of various information and control each component of the wireless power transmission device (1100).

[0053] The controller (1140) may be implemented as a computer or a similar device using hardware, software, or a combination thereof. In terms of hardware, the controller (1140) may be provided in the form of an electronic circuit that processes electrical signals to perform control functions, and in terms of software, it may be provided in the form of a program that drives the hardware controller (1140).

[0054] Hereinafter, a wireless power receiving device (1200) according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described.

[0055] FIG. 3 is a block diagram of a wireless power receiving device (1200) according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0056] Referring to FIG. 3, the wireless power receiving device (1200) may include a receiving antenna (1210), a power receiving module (1220), a communication module (1230), and a controller (1240). The wireless power receiving device (1200) can receive power wirelessly.

[0057] The receiving antenna (1210) can receive wireless power transmitted from a wireless power transmission device (1100) or a wireless power transmission / reception device (1300). The receiving antenna (1210) can receive power by utilizing the magnetic field radiated from the transmitting antenna (1120). Here, when a specific frequency is a resonance frequency, a magnetic resonance phenomenon occurs between the transmitting antenna (1120) and the receiving antenna (1210), allowing power to be transmitted more efficiently.

[0058] The power receiving module (1220) can charge or drive the wireless power receiving device (1200) using power received by the receiving antenna (1210). The power receiving module (1220) may include an impedance matching unit (1221), a rectifier (1222), a DC-DC converter (1223), and a battery (1224).

[0059] An impedance matching unit (1221) can adjust the impedance of a wireless power receiving device (1200). The impedance matching unit (1221) may be composed of a capacitor, an inductor, and a switching element that switches a combination thereof. Impedance matching can be performed by controlling the switching element of the circuit constituting the impedance matching unit (1221) based on the voltage value, current value, power value, frequency value, etc. of the received wireless power. In some cases, the impedance matching unit (1221) may be omitted, and the present specification also includes an embodiment of a wireless power receiving device (1200) in which the impedance matching unit (1221) is omitted.

[0060] The rectifier (1222) can rectify the received wireless power to convert it from alternating current to direct current. The rectifier (1222) can convert alternating current to direct current using diodes or transistors and smooth it using capacitors and resistors. As the rectifier (1222), a full-wave rectifier, a half-wave rectifier, a voltage multiplier, etc., implemented as a bridge circuit, etc., may be used.

[0061] The DC-DC converter (1223) can convert the voltage of the rectified DC power to a desired level and output it. When the voltage value of the DC power rectified by the rectifier (1222) is greater or smaller than the voltage value required for charging the battery or operating an electronic device, the DC-DC converter (1223) can change the voltage value of the rectified DC power to a desired voltage.

[0062] The battery (1224) can store energy using power output from the DC-DC converter (1223). Meanwhile, the battery (1224) does not necessarily have to be included in the wireless power receiving device (1200). For example, the battery may be provided as an external component that is detachable. As another example, the wireless power receiving device (1200) may include a driving means for driving various operations of an electronic device instead of the battery (1224).

[0063] Meanwhile, although not illustrated in FIG. 3, the wireless power receiving device (1200) may further include a communication antenna. The communication antenna can transmit and receive communication signals using a communication carrier other than magnetic field communication. For example, the communication antenna can transmit and receive communication signals such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, ZigBee, and NFC.

[0064] The communication module (1230) can transmit and receive information with the wireless power transmission device (1100) or the wireless power transmission and reception device (1300). The communication module (1230) may include at least one of an in-band communication module or an out-band communication module.

[0065] An in-band communication module can transmit and receive information using magnetic waves with a specific frequency as the center frequency. For example, the communication module (1230) can perform in-band communication by transmitting information carried on magnetic waves through a receiving antenna (1210) or by receiving magnetic waves containing information through a receiving antenna (1210). By using such in-band communication, the communication module (1230) can transmit and receive information over a distance of several meters at a data transmission rate of several kbps.

[0066] The out-band communication module may also perform out-band communication through a communication antenna. For example, the communication module (1230) may be provided as a short-range communication module.

[0067] Examples of short-range communication modules include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, ZigBee, and NFC.

[0068] The controller (1240) can control the overall operation of the wireless power receiving device (1200). The controller (1240) can perform calculations and processing of various information and control each component of the wireless power receiving device (1200).

[0069] The controller (1240) may be implemented as a computer or a similar device using hardware, software, or a combination thereof. In terms of hardware, the controller (1240) may be provided in the form of an electronic circuit that processes electrical signals to perform control functions, and in terms of software, it may be provided in the form of a program that drives the hardware controller (1240).

[0070] FIG. 4 is a block diagram schematically illustrating a wireless charging system according to an embodiment of the present invention. Referring to FIG. 4, the wireless charging system (2000) according to the present embodiment comprises a wireless power transmission device (2100), a wireless power receiving device (2200), and a magnetic field control member (2300).

[0071] The wireless power transmission device (2100) transmits power wirelessly and may include, although not illustrated, a power transmission module (2110), a transmission antenna (2120), a communication module (2130), and a controller (2140). Each of the above components may perform the same or similar functions as the power transmission module (1110), transmission antenna (1120), communication module (1130), and controller (1140) of FIG. 2.

[0072] The transmission antenna (2120) can be composed of a primary coil and can generate an electromagnetic field.

[0073] Additionally, the wireless power receiving device (2200) receives power wirelessly and may include, although not illustrated, a receiving antenna (2210), a power receiving module (2220), a communication module (2230), and a controller (2240). Each of the above components may perform the same or similar functions as the power receiving module (1220), the communication module (1230), and the controller (1240) of FIG. 3.

[0074] The receiving antenna (2210) may be composed of a secondary coil and can receive power from the wireless power transmission device (2100) through the magnetic field generated from the transmitting antenna (2120).

[0075] As shown in FIG. 4, the magnetic field control member (2300) is located between the primary coil (2120) and the secondary coil (2210) of the wireless power transmission device (2100), that is, in the path of the magnetic field of the primary coil (2120) and the secondary coil (2210), and can be positioned so that one side faces the primary coil (2120) or the secondary coil (2210).

[0076] Additionally, the magnetic field control member (2300) may be positioned such that one side faces the primary coil (2120) and the opposite side faces the secondary coil.

[0077] Additionally, the magnetic field control member (2300) may be provided in a form coupled to a power transmission device (2100) by being positioned adjacent to the primary coil (2120), and may also be provided in a form coupled to a transmission receiving device (2200) by being positioned adjacent to the secondary coil (2210).

[0078] In conventional wireless charging systems, the size of the primary coil is generally much larger than that of the secondary coil, so the magnetic field generated from the primary coil is not transmitted intensively to the secondary coil but rather reaches the surroundings of the secondary coil widely. As a result, electronic devices or components located near the secondary coil receive unwanted magnetic fields, which can cause problems such as malfunctions in surrounding electronic devices.

[0079] The magnetic field control member (2300) causes the magnetic field formed in the primary coil (2120) to be focused on the secondary coil (2210), thereby reducing power loss, improving charging efficiency, and reducing the magnetic field influence on components other than the secondary coil (2210). To this end, in the area where the secondary coil (2210) is located on the magnetic field control member (2300) along the path where the magnetic field formed in the primary coil (2120) travels to the secondary coil (2210), it provides the function of a repeater or relay, and conversely, in the area where the secondary coil (2210) is not located on the magnetic field control member (2300) along the path where the magnetic field formed in the primary coil (2120) travels to the secondary coil (2210), it provides the function of blocking the magnetic field. This prevents surrounding electronic devices from malfunctioning due to the magnetic field.

[0081] FIG. 5 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a magnetic field control member (3300) according to an embodiment of the present invention.
