Specific details for implementing the invention

[0008] One or more methodologies or techniques are described to enable users to apply treatment formulations to human hair and scalp tissues. The following description generally provides representative examples of hair and scalp treatment delivery systems, devices, and formulation cartridges for the same. In one embodiment, it is beneficial to apply the treatment formulation to a target portion of the hair or scalp tissue. In one embodiment, for example, when applying a coloring agent to the roots of hair during a color maintenance procedure, it is desirable to apply the treatment to a portion of the hair near the scalp. In another example, an approach is required to apply the scalp treatment formulation directly to the scalp tissue while minimizing contact with the hair.

[0009] Existing systems for the application of hair and scalp treatment formulations have been widely used. For example, hair coloring kits are generally used to alter the appearance of hair color or to blend gray hair. Existing hair coloring systems have several disadvantages, including difficulty of use, time consumption, uneven coverage, unpredictable results, and excessive messiness. In one embodiment, existing hair coloring systems may not be effective for blending and coloring hair roots after new segments of hair have grown out of the scalp, where the natural hair color differs from the rest of the dyed hair. The present disclosure relates to addressing these and other needs.

[0010] In some embodiments, the hair coloring formulation comprises at least one dye and a separate developer mixed in controlled proportions. However, the “formulation” is not limited to the dye and the developer in this disclosure. In one embodiment, the term “formulation” generally means any of a dye, a developer, a formulation, a fluid, or any mixture thereof. In one embodiment, the “formulation” includes permanent hair dyes; semi-permanent hair dyes, developers, conditioners; hair growth treatments such as minoxidil manufactured under the trade name ROGAINE®; hair protein treatments; disulfide bond repair hair treatments; fluid hair treatments; fluid scalp treatments, etc. The “formulation” includes anti-dandruff formulations, dry scalp treatment formulations, itchy scalp treatment formulations, etc. In one embodiment, the “formulation” includes scalp care formulations, scalp cleanser formulations, scalp conditioner formulations, scalp detoxification formulations, etc.

[0011] The embodiments of the present disclosure are configured to apply a formulation to a target area of hair and scalp tissue. In some embodiments, the location is a cleaning bezel. In some embodiments, the method further includes the step of pumping a cleaning fluid from a valve selector for a certain period of time, and the step of drawing water from a sink to the cleaning bezel.

[0021] FIG. 1 illustrates a representative formulation delivery system (100) according to the present disclosure. The formulation delivery system (100) includes a number of different features, including a formulation product line (102), a formulation delivery device (104), and an optional application (106), which together enable a customized user experience.

[0022] The formulation product line (102) includes different formulations (108), each of which is stored in the same (common) formulation cartridge (110) type configured for use with the formulation delivery device (104). Cartridges of the common formulation cartridge type are generally configured to be inserted into the cartridge cavity of the reusable handle of the formulation delivery device. For example, in some embodiments, the formulation cartridges and cleaning cartridges have common cross-sectional shapes and dimensions. Additionally, the common formulation cartridge type in some embodiments has a common number and arrangement of output nozzles.

[0023] FIG. 2 illustrates a schematic overview of a representative formulation delivery device (200) and facilitates understanding of its specific representative features. It should be understood that the formulation delivery device (200) has the same features as the formulation delivery device (104) of FIG. 1.

[0024] The formulation delivery device (200) includes a reusable handle (202) having a hollow, elongated portion configured to reversibly accommodate a common formulation cartridge type (including a cleaning cartridge (112)). The reusable handle (202) also accommodates a number of sub-assemblies including a controller (204) comprising a processor (206) and a data store (208) storing a number of modules (described later), a cartridge authentication interface (210), a power supply (212), a formulation dispensing assembly (214), and an optional position sensor (216).

[0025] The power source (212) is a direct current (DC) power source, such as a rechargeable battery (e.g., a lithium-ion battery) configured to be charged by connecting to a household AC outlet in some embodiments. In other embodiments, the power source (212) is an alternating current (AC) power source, such as a standard household AC power source utilizing an electrical cord (not shown) to supply power to the formulation delivery device (200). In some embodiments, the battery is configured to adjust the amplitude of the current and / or power based on the temperature of the battery. In some embodiments, the battery includes a battery manager for adjusting the current or amplitude based on the temperature of the battery.

[0026] The formulation dispensing assembly (214) provides a formulation and / or cleansing liquid from the formulation cartridge (110) to the user's scalp or hair. In one embodiment, the formulation dispensing assembly (214) comprises a first fluid conduit (coupled to the first liquid output nozzle of the formulation cartridge (110)) fluidically connected to a first formulation inlet, a second fluid conduit (coupled to the second liquid output nozzle of the formulation cartridge (110)) fluidly connected to a second formulation inlet, a motor (218), a pump (220) driven by the motor (218), and a reciprocating nozzle assembly (222) also driven by the motor (218).

[0027] The cartridge authentication interface (210) is an RFID reader, a nearfield reader, etc., and is located within a reusable handle (202) to authenticate the formulation cartridge in relation to the formulation routine module (226) described later, and thus, when the formulation cartridge (110) is inserted inside, the cartridge authentication interface (210) reads the encryption chip placed in the formulation cartridge (224).

[0028] An optional position sensor (216) comprises one or more sensors that assist, either alone or collectively, in determining the position and orientation of the formulation delivery device (200) to the user's scalp or hair. In some embodiments, the position sensor (216) comprises one or more accelerometers, touch sensors (e.g., capacitive touch sensors), proximity sensors (e.g., optical proximity sensors), etc. Signals transmitted from the position sensor (216) are used by the controller (204) and its specific modules to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the formulation application to the user's hair or scalp.

[0029] The controller (204) is operatively connected to a power supply (212), a cartridge authentication interface (210), a formulation dispensing assembly (214), and an optional position sensor (216) (e.g., electrically connected, electro-optically connected, optically connected, etc.). The controller (204) includes a plurality of modules implemented as a processor (206) (e.g., a general processing unit, a graphics processing unit, a central processing unit, or an application-specific integrated circuit, etc.), a data store (926) (a tangible machine-readable storage medium), software logic (e.g., executable software code, one or more algorithms, etc.), firmware logic, hardware logic, or various combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the controller (204) includes a transceiver that transmits signals from any of the modules described below to a mobile device and receives signals transmitted from the mobile device.

[0030] In some embodiments, the controller (204) includes a communication interface having circuits configured to communicate with a formulation delivery system, including a formulation cartridge (224) (encryption chip), a cleaning cartridge (228), a cartridge authentication interface (210), a mobile device and an application stored therein, and / or other network elements through the Internet, a cellular network, an RF network, a Personal Area Network (PAN), a local area network, a wide area network, or other networks. Accordingly, the communication interface may be configured to communicate using wireless protocols (e.g., WIFI®, WIMAX®, BLUETOOTH®, ZIGBEE®, cellular, infrared, near field, etc.), and / or wired protocols (universal serial bus or other serial communication, parallel communication bus, etc. such as RS-216, RJ-45, etc.). In some embodiments, the communication interface includes a circuit configured to initiate a discovery protocol that allows the controller (204) and another network element (e.g., formulation cartridge (110)) to identify each other and exchange control information (e.g., an identifier of a formulation stored in the formulation cartridge (110)). In one embodiment, the communication interface is configured with a discovery protocol and has a circuit configured to negotiate one or more pre-shared keys.

[0031] The data store (208) is a tangible machine-readable storage medium comprising a mechanism for storing information in a non-transient form accessible by a machine (e.g., a processor (206), or a mobile device (114)). For example, the machine-readable storage medium includes writable / non-writable media (e.g., read-only memory (ROM), random access memory (RAM), magnetic disk storage media, optical storage media, flash memory devices, etc.).

[0032] The modules described below are representative and are not limited. Accordingly, the controller (204) of some embodiments includes additional modules, while other embodiments include fewer modules than all of them.

[0033] The cartridge authentication module (230) communicates with the cartridge authentication interface (210) to authenticate any formulation cartridge (224) or cleaning cartridge (228) inserted into the reusable handle (202). For example, when the formulation cartridge (224) is inserted into the reusable handle (202), the cartridge authentication interface (210) reads encrypted information from an encryption chip placed in the formulation cartridge (224). If the cartridge authentication interface (210) successfully reads the encrypted information from the encryption chip, the cartridge authentication module (230) “unlocks” the formulation delivery device (200), for example, the formulation routine module (226). However, if the cartridge authentication interface (210) cannot successfully authenticate the formulation cartridge inserted into the reusable handle (202), the formulation delivery device (200) is not unlocked. For example, if the formulation cartridge is a counterfeit cartridge or another cartridge containing a low-quality formulation, the cartridge authentication module (230) does not unlock the function of the formulation delivery device (200). In this way, advantageously, the cartridge authentication module (230) prevents the user from suffering harm or having a bad experience.

[0034] The cartridge authentication module (230) is configured to read additional information from an encryption chip, including, in some embodiments, at least one of formulation identification information, a starting formulation amount, a formulation expiration date, or a formulation production date. In such embodiments, the cartridge authentication module (230) transmits the additional information to other modules for subsequent use.

[0035] The formulation routine module (226) stores multiple formulation routines for different formulations (e.g., hair care formulation routines) and causes the formulation dispensing assembly (214) to execute one or more formulation routines based on a formulation cartridge (224) authenticated by the cartridge authentication module (230). The formulation routine dispenses the authenticated formulation (108) from the formulation cartridge (224) through the reciprocating nozzle assembly (222). For example, the hair care formulation routine activates the formulation dispensing assembly (214) to dispense one or more hair care formulations from the reciprocating nozzle assembly (222) for a specific dispensing time, with a specific liquid flow rate of the pump, the nozzle reciprocating frequency and / or reciprocating amplitude of the reciprocating nozzle assembly (222), and / or other device operating parameters specified by the formulation routine stored in the formulation routine module (226). In this way, the formulation delivery device (200) adjusts one or more device operating parameters based on a specific formulation stored in an authenticated formulation cartridge (224) inserted into the formulation delivery device for more effective hair and scalp treatment.

[0036] In some embodiments, the formulation routine module (226) determines the dispensing volume of an authenticated formulation from a formulation cartridge through a formulation dispensing assembly based on the dispensing time of the authenticated formulation. Based on the dispensing time and / or dispensing volume, the formulation routine module (226) causes a visual indicator on the reusable handle (202) to signal the remaining amount of formulation. This helps the user predict when the formulation cartridge needs to be replaced and encourages the user to conveniently procure additional formulation cartridges by utilizing the e-commerce module of the connected application.

[0037] In one embodiment, the formulation routine module (226) determines the ratio of the mixed formulation in response to one or more input parameters from the cartridge authentication module (230) indicating authentication or approval. In one embodiment, the formulation routine module (226) causes the formulation dispensing assembly (214) to dispense a mixed formulation having a ratio determined in response to one or more input parameters indicating authentication or approval. In one embodiment, the formulation routine module (226) determines the ratio of the first formulation and at least the second formulation in response to one or more input parameters indicating authentication or approval.

[0038] The cleaning routine module (232) stores a cleaning routine and causes the formulation dispensing assembly (214) to execute the cleaning routine after the cleaning cartridge (228) (having a reservoir filled with cleaning liquid) is inserted into a reusable handle (202) and authenticated by the cartridge authentication module (230). The cleaning routine dispenses cleaning liquid from the authenticated cleaning cartridge (228) through the reciprocating nozzle assembly (222) to empty any residual formulation within the formulation dispensing assembly (214) (e.g., at a predetermined time and a predetermined flow rate). The cleaning routine is useful, for example, after one formulation has been utilized in the formulation delivery device (200) but before a second different formulation is utilized. In some embodiments, the cleaning routine operates the pump (220) at a higher flow rate than one or more (or all) formulation routines stored by the formulation routine module (226) to clean all residual formulations.

[0039] In some embodiments, the controller (204) is configured to switch between at least a cleaning routine (provided by the cleaning routine module (232)) and a formulation routine (provided by the formulation routine module (226)) in response to one or more inputs indicating a cleaning cartridge or formulation cartridge inserted into a reusable handle. Representative inputs include authentication of the formulation cartridge or cleaning cartridge provided by the cartridge authentication module (230).

[0040] According to the method of the present disclosure, a method for cleaning any of the formulation delivery devices comprises the steps of inserting a cleaning cartridge at least partially filled with a cleaning liquid into a reusable handle of the formulation delivery device, and running a cleaning routine until the cleaning liquid dispensed through the formulation dispensing assembly is clean.

[0041] The power management module (234) provides power from the power source (212) to one or more of the controller (204), cartridge authentication interface (210), formulation dispensing assembly (214), or position sensor (216). Additionally, the power management module (234) conserves available power resources (e.g., conserves battery life) by switching the formulation delivery device (104) between a sleep state (passive state) and an awake state (active state).

[0042] The sleep / awake module (236) manages whether the formulation delivery device (200) is in an awake state or a sleep state. The formulation delivery device (200) is in a sleep state by default, so that little or no power is supplied from the power source (212) to the formulation dispensing assembly (214), the cartridge authentication interface (210), and / or the controller (204). In the sleep state, the formulation delivery device (200) cannot execute a formulation routine or a cleaning routine. In contrast, in the awake state, the controller (204), the cartridge authentication interface (210), the formulation dispensing assembly (214), and the position sensor (216) are supplied with sufficient power so that the formulation delivery device (104) can execute one or more formulation routines or cleaning routines. In some embodiments, the formulation delivery device (104) is “awakened”—that is, transitioned from a sleep state to an awake state—by pressing a button placed on the reusable handle (202) or by inserting a formulation cartridge (224) or a cleaning cartridge (228) into the reusable handle (202). In some embodiments, the formulation delivery device (200) returns to a sleep state after a predetermined period of inactivity (e.g., 120 seconds of inactivity).

[0043] The position module (238) determines the position of the formulation delivery device (200) by utilizing a position signal provided by the position sensor (216), and this position information is provided to the formulation routine module (226) to facilitate the execution of a formulation routine, for example, a calibration routine. In some embodiments, the position module (238) provides the position signal to an application stored on a mobile device (via a transceiver) to enable, for example, the execution of a calibration routine (described below) and / or to enable the application to display the correct application indication based on the position signal.

[0044] FIG. 3 illustrates a schematic overview of a representative application (300), which should be understood to have all the features of the application (106) of FIG. 1 and is compatible with all formulation delivery systems and formulation delivery devices of the present disclosure. As described above, the application (300) is configured to operate on a device, for example, a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. As one representative example, the application (300) is described in the context of a mobile device (302) connected to a network (304), but this is not limited.

[0045] The mobile device (302) has a display (306) (e.g., an LED or LCD display), a processor (308), and a data store (310) that stores a plurality of modules. The terms “processor,” “data store,” and “module” have the same meaning as described above in relation to the controller (204) and have the same meaning as used below in relation to representative formulation delivery devices.

[0046] Each module described below provides one or more user interfaces on a display (306). The display (306) is a touch-sensitive display configured to receive user inputs on it. Accordingly, for each module, the user interface provided on the display (306) is configured to display information and receive user inputs.

[0047] The application (300) includes a number of modules that personalize the user experience, including a user profile module (312) and a user routine module (314). The modules described below are representative and are not limited. Accordingly, the application (300) of some embodiments includes additional modules, while other embodiments include a smaller number of modules than all of them.

[0048] The user profile module (312) constructs one or more profiles for users of the formulation delivery device (104). These profiles are provided as inputs to other modules, e.g., the user routine module (314) and the e-commerce module (316). Accordingly, the user profile module (312) provides one or more user interfaces that induce the user to provide one or more user profile inputs, including hair color, hair type (e.g., curly, straight), colored / uncolored, race, hair condition (e.g., damage), scalp condition (e.g., itchiness), and / or age. The user profile module (312) receives and stores the user profile inputs.

[0049] In some embodiments, the user profile module (312) communicates with the user routine module (314) by providing one or more of the user profile inputs, or the entire user profile, to the user routine module (314). The user routine module (314) utilizes one or more of the user profile inputs to generate one or more user-specific routines for the user and / or select one or more tutorials to provide on the display (306).

[0050] In some embodiments, the user profile module (312) communicates with the formulation delivery device (104). For example, in some embodiments, the user profile module (312) adjusts at least one device operating parameter (e.g., flow rate, dispensing time, round-trip amplitude, or round-trip frequency) of the formulation routine generated by the formulation routine module based on one or more of the user profile inputs.

[0051] The user routine module (314) helps the user efficiently utilize the connected formulation delivery device by formulating one or more user-specific routines for each user based on one or more user profile inputs in some embodiments. That is, the user routine module (314) constructs a new formulation routine to efficiently handle one or more conditions identified by the user profile inputs or to achieve one or more goals identified by the user profile inputs (instead of selecting a predetermined formulation routine). As a representative example, if the user inputs indicate that the user's hair is colored and damaged, the user routine module (314) selects a hair repair formulation and shampoo formulation suitable for the user's hair color from the formulation product line and displays a user-specific routine (e.g., as instructions) for utilizing the selected hair repair formulation and shampoo at determined intervals to improve the user's hair health.

[0052] Additionally, the user routine module (314) displays on the display (306) a) one or more floating tutorials for formulation routines, cleaning routines, and / or calibration routines; and / or one or more sets of active instructions that instruct the user when the user uses the formulation delivery device.

[0053] In some embodiments, the user routine module (314) receives one or more user profile inputs or the entire user profile from the user profile module (312) and then displays a floating tutorial (e.g., a pre-recorded instruction video) directed at the user based on the received user profile inputs or user profile. As an example, the user routine module (314) receives a user profile input from the user profile module (312) indicating that the user has colored hair and displays a tutorial on the display (306) showing the user how to use a formulation delivery device to color the user's hair.

[0054] In some embodiments, the user routine module (314) receives one or more position signals from the position sensor of the formulation delivery device via the controller. Based on the received position signals, the user routine module (314) instructs the user on how to use the formulation delivery device when the user uses the device (e.g., instructions to move the delivery device in a specific direction, at a specific speed, in a specific pattern, or to a specific spatial boundary). As an example, the user routine module (314) receives a position signal from the position sensor indicating that the formulation delivery device is positioned at the user's left temple; and based on this received position signal, the user routine module (314) displays a video instructing the user to apply the scalp treatment formulation by moving the formulation delivery device from the left temple to the right temple while dispensing the scalp treatment formulation.

[0055] In some embodiments, the user routine module (314) receives a location signal from the formulation delivery device and displays the correct application indication based on the location signal.

[0056] The calibration module (318) assists the user in calibrating the formulation delivery device, which in turn increases the efficacy of the formulation routines executed by the formulation delivery device. In some embodiments, the calibration module (318) displays a floating tutorial (e.g., a pre-recorded instruction video) that instructs the user on how to complete the calibration routine. In some embodiments, the calibration module (318) provides one or more sets of active instructions that instruct the user on how to use the complete calibration routine when the user uses the formulation delivery device and when the calibration module (318) receives position signals from the formulation delivery device.

[0057] According to a typical correction routine, the correction module (318) instructs the user to position the formulation delivery device at multiple correction locations on the user's body parts, for example, in a specific order (e.g., left temple, right temple, front hairline, and back hairline). Then, the user moves the formulation delivery device to each of the correction locations, which indicates that there is a button on the formulation delivery device or other action when the formulation delivery device is at a specific correction location and / or while the user moves the formulation delivery device from one correction location to another.

[0058] Based on position signals received from a position sensor of a formulation delivery device, the calibration module (318) and / or the formulation delivery device records calibration positions. Then, the calibration module (318) and / or the formulation delivery device adjusts one or more user-specific routines based on the recorded calibration positions. In some embodiments, this adjustment step includes adjusting the spatial limits and / or temporal durations of one or more formulation routines stored in the formulation routine module.

[0059] The manual adjustment module (320) enables a user to manually adjust one or more device operating parameters (e.g., flow rate, dispensing time, round-trip amplitude, or round-trip frequency) of the formulation delivery device for the benefit of greater control over the formulation delivery device and a more customized user experience. Accordingly, the manual adjustment module (320) provides a user interface having one or more user-adjustable virtual sliding scales, switches, editable value fields, etc., which is configured to receive one or more operating parameters from the user. The manual adjustment module (320) receives operating parameter inputs and transmits said operating parameter inputs to the formulation delivery device (e.g., formulation routine module), which adjusts said device operating parameters based on said operating parameter inputs (e.g., to match said operating parameter inputs).

[0060] The analysis module (322) receives device operation parameters (e.g., from a formulation delivery device) and calculates useful analyses, and the analysis module (322) then provides them to a user via a user interface and / or to a third party via a network (304). Representative analyses include formulation usage patterns, formulation purchase predictions, and diagnoses of the formulation delivery device. In some embodiments, the analysis module (322) communicates with the network (304) (e.g., an analysis platform deployed on one or more cloud-based servers) to retrieve additional information and / or calculate the analyses.

[0061] In some embodiments, the formulation delivery device includes a location sensor that sends a location signal to a controller, and a transceiver that sends a location signal to a mobile device. The formulation delivery device transmits the location signal to an analysis module (322), which retrieves user suggestions from an analysis platform on the network (116) based on the received location signal and displays the user suggestions.

[0062] The formulation generation module (324) enables the user to generate a customized formulation based on the user's selection of one or more formulation inputs, which correspond to one or more desired results (e.g., desired hair color), one or more formulation inputs (e.g., an indication that the user's hair is damaged), and / or one or more user profile inputs provided to the user profile module (312). Accordingly, the formulation generation module (324) is configured to receive one or more user profile inputs from the user profile module (312) and to formulate a customized formulation based on these inputs.

[0063] To facilitate the creation of a user-customized formulation, the formulation creation module (324) provides a user interface having one or more user-adjustable virtual sliding scales, switches, editable value fields, etc., corresponding to each formulation input. In some embodiments, the formulation creation module (324) communicates with a network (304) (e.g., a database of formulations deployed on one or more cloud-based servers) to retrieve additional information and / or formulate the custom formulation.

[0064] The e-commerce module (316) provides a purchase interface that enables a user to purchase products related to the formulation delivery device (including one-time purchases or subscription-based purchases). In some embodiments, the e-commerce module (316) retrieves one or more custom formulations from the formulation creation module (324) (or its components) and provides an option on the purchase interface for the user to purchase one or more formulation cartridges (110) containing the custom formulations. In some embodiments, the e-commerce module (316) retrieves one or more user profile inputs and / or user-specific routine inputs from the user profile module (312) and provides an option on the purchase interface for the user to purchase one or more formulation cartridges containing formulations that target the user profile inputs (e.g., a formulation cartridge containing a hair repair formulation if the user inputs indicate damaged hair). In some embodiments, the e-commerce module (316) provides an option on the purchase interface for the user to purchase a cleansing cartridge (112) or the formulation delivery device (104) and / or its components. Such purchase interfaces and purchase options may be based on formulation usage patterns and / or formulation purchase predictions retrieved from the analysis module (322).

[0065] FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate a representative formulation delivery device (400) and its components according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. The formulation delivery device (400) is configured to accommodate a formulation cartridge (402) type (including a cleaning cartridge of the same type). A formulation cartridge of the formulation cartridge (402) type of one embodiment is described in detail below in connection with FIGS. 8a through 10; and it should be understood that the formulation cartridge (402) illustrated in FIG. 4 has the same features as described therein. The formulation delivery device (400) of some embodiments includes a formulation cartridge (402) and / or an optional pull-through adapter (404).

[0066] The formulation delivery device (400) comprises a reusable handle (406) formed of ABS plastic or a similar rigid polymer or other material, and in some embodiments, is an assembly formed of a plurality of shells configured to be connected together by fastening elements such as snaps, screws, etc. The reusable handle (406) has a hollow, elongated gripping portion having an internal cartridge cavity specified in size and dimensions to accommodate a formulation cartridge type (402). In some embodiments, the cavity includes keying features that facilitate the correct insertion of the formulation cartridge type (402). For example, some embodiments include a cartridge interface (408) having a flat docking surface that is positioned within the opening and interfaces with the corresponding docking surface of the formulation cartridge (402) when the formulation cartridge (402) is correctly inserted into the opening.

[0067] The application (106) includes logic configured to operate on a non-transient machine-readable storage medium and includes modules that personalize the user experience, provide useful analytics, and enable e-commerce. The application (106) runs on a mobile device (114), such as a smartphone or tablet, and interacts with a user (e.g., end user or salon technician) to provide actionable information through a plurality of modules, which is described later in relation to FIG. 3. In some embodiments, the application (106) communicates with a formulation delivery device (104) and a network (116), such as a mobile network, a cloud-based enterprise network, a local area network, etc.

[0068] The formulation product line (102), formulation delivery device (104), and application (106) together provide an improved, customized user experience. Each of the aforementioned elements of the formulation delivery system (100) will now be described in detail.

[0069] The formulation delivery device (104) is a connected electromechanical device that interacts with a user, formulation cartridges (110), and optionally an application (106) to provide a customized and personalized user experience. Representative formulation delivery devices and their sub-systems are described below in connection with FIGS. 4 through 7.

[0070] Generally, the formulation delivery device (104) includes a formulation dispensing assembly and a controller, as well as a reusable handle configured to accommodate a formulation cartridge (110) type, both of which are placed within the reusable handle. The formulation dispensing assembly includes at least one fluid conduit fluidically connected to a motorized pump and a reciprocating nozzle assembly, and is configured to draw a formulation or cleansing liquid from the formulation cartridge (110) and dispense it to a part of the user's hair, scalp, or body through the reciprocating nozzle assembly.

[0071] The controller is configured to switch between at least a cleaning routine and a formulation routine in response to one or more inputs indicating a cleaning cartridge or formulation cartridge inserted into a reusable handle. To authenticate which formulation (108) is stored in the formulation cartridge (110) inserted into the reusable handle at any given time, the controller communicates with an encryption chip reader of a cartridge authentication interface in the reusable handle to read an encryption chip placed on the formulation cartridge (110). In some embodiments, the controller also authenticates when a cleaning cartridge (112) is inserted into the reusable handle. Based on the authenticated formulation (108) or cleaning cartridge (112), the controller causes the formulation delivery device (104) to execute a formulation routine in which it dispenses the authenticated formulation from the formulation cartridge through the formulation dispensing assembly. Based on the authenticated cleaning cartridge (112), the controller also causes the formulation delivery device (104) to execute a cleaning routine in which it dispenses a cleaning liquid through the formulation dispensing assembly.

[0072] The reusable handle (406) accommodates a formulation dispensing assembly (410) (described later in connection with FIGS. 5 to 7) in addition to the controller (412). The formulation dispensing assembly (410) and the controller (412) each have the same features as the formulation dispensing assembly (214) and the controller (204) of FIG. 2. A formulation dispensing assembly of one embodiment is described in detail later in connection with FIGS. 6 and 7; and it should be understood that the formulation dispensing assembly (410) shown in FIG. 4 has the same features as described therein.

[0073] The formulation dispensing assembly (410) dispenses a formulation or cleaning liquid from a formulation cartridge (402) and includes a reciprocating nozzle assembly (414) (described later) having nozzles extending away from the front end of a reusable handle (406) between a pump, fluid conduits, a mixing chamber, and a plurality of optional standoff portions (416). The reciprocating nozzle assembly (414) includes a plurality of annular nozzles that reciprocate back and forth along the track of the reusable handle (406) while dispensing a formulation to a user's skin or hair. In some embodiments, the reciprocating nozzle assembly (414) reciprocates with a reciprocating amplitude of 7.0 to 12.0 mm (e.g., 8.0 mm to 11.0 mm, or 9.0 to 10.0 mm) and / or a reciprocating frequency of 5.0 Hz to 10.0 Hz (e.g., 6.0 Hz to 9.0 Hz, 6.0 Hz to 8.0 Hz), which can be adjusted by a formulation routine module, a cleaning routine module, a user routine module, a manual adjustment module, or other modules.

[0074] As illustrated in FIG. 5, the formulation cartridge (402) has one or more formulation bezels (418) (e.g., pouches or packets) disposed inside, each of which has an output nozzle (420) protruding through the distal (forward) end of the formulation cartridge (402) in a configuration that is fluidly connected to the corresponding formulation inlet (422) of the formulation dispensing assembly (410) when the formulation cartridge (402) is fully inserted into the cartridge cavity (424).

[0075] A button (426) placed on a reusable handle (406) and electrically connected to a controller (412) activates the features of the formulation delivery device (400) described above. In some embodiments, pressing the button (426) activates the features of any of the modules described in FIG. 2. For example, in some embodiments, pressing the button (426) activates a sleep / awake module stored in the controller (412), thereby waking the formulation delivery device (400) from a sleep state to an awake state. In some embodiments, pressing the button (426) while a formulation cartridge is inserted into the reusable handle (406) activates a formulation routine module stored in the controller (412), thereby initiating a formulation routine.

[0076] In some embodiments, pressing the button (426) while the cleaning cartridge is inserted into the reusable handle (406) activates a cleaning routine module stored in the controller (412), thereby initiating the cleaning routine. Visual indicators (428) (e.g., LEDs) placed along the reusable handle (406) indicate one or more of the remaining amount of formulation or remaining battery life, for example, based on the dispensing time determined by the formulation routine module of the controller. Some embodiments include additional buttons with other functions and / or a different number of visual indicators (428), and the illustrated embodiments are not limited. In some embodiments, the visual indicator (428) is a multi-segment LED, and each segment corresponds to the same proportion of the formulation remaining in the formulation cartridge.

[0077] The controller (412) includes logic that, when executed by the processor of the controller (412), causes a cartridge authentication interface (430) (e.g., an RFID reader) placed within a reusable handle (406) to read the encryption chip (432) of the formulation cartridge (402) to authenticate the formulation cartridge (402) (stored in its data store). The encryption chip (432) stores at least one of the formulation cartridge (402), formulation identification information, starting formulation amount, formulation expiration date, or formulation production date.

[0078] The controller (412) also includes logic that, when executed, causes a formulation routine to be executed to dispense a mixed formulation (a mixed formulation of the first formulation and the second formulation) from the formulation cartridge (402) through the formulation dispensing assembly based on the formulation delivery device authenticating the formulation cartridge (402). For example, the formulation delivery device authenticates the first and second formulations after (or at the time of) insertion of the formulation cartridge into a reusable handle, and then, in response to pressing a button on the reusable handle, executes a formulation routine in which the formulation dispensing assembly (410) mixes the first and second formulations sequentially or continuously and dispenses them from the reciprocating nozzle assembly while the button is pressed, at one or more of the following predetermined device operating parameters: formulation flow rate, reciprocating frequency, or reciprocating amplitude.

[0079] In some embodiments, the controller (412) also includes logic that, when executed, causes a cleaning routine to be executed to dispense a cleaning liquid through a formulation dispensing assembly based on the formulation delivery device authenticating a cleaning cartridge inserted into reusable handles. For example, the formulation delivery device authenticates a cleaning cartridge inserted into a reusable handle and then, in response to pressing a button on the reusable handle, executes a cleaning routine that causes the formulation dispensing assembly (410) to dispense a cleaning liquid (e.g., water) from a reciprocating nozzle assembly in succession or continuously while the button is pressed, with one or more of the following predetermined device operating parameters: cleaning liquid flow rate, reciprocating frequency, or reciprocating amplitude. In some embodiments, the cleaning liquid flow rate is higher than any of the formulation flow rates of one or more formulation routines stored in the controller (412) for the benefit of effectively dispensing residual formulation from the formulation dispensing assembly.

[0080] The pull-through adapter (404) is attached to a reusable handle (406) on the reciprocating nozzle assembly (414). In some embodiments, the pull-through adapter (404) provides an audible feedback signal when properly engaged with the reusable handle (406).

[0081] FIGS. 6 and 7 illustrate a typical formulation dispensing assembly (600), which is compatible with any of the formulation delivery devices, formulation cartridges, and cleansing cartridges described herein. The primary function of the formulation dispensing assembly (600) is to dispense a mixture of two different formulations from a formulation cartridge onto the user's skin or hair. In some embodiments, the formulation dispensing assembly (600) dispenses the mixture at a flow rate of 20 to 40 mL / min or 120 mL / min, e.g., 20 to 35 mL / min, 20 to 30 mL / min, 20 to 25 mL / min, 25 to 35 mL / min, 25 to 30 mL / min, or 35 to 40 mL / min.

[0082] The formulation dispensing assembly (600) includes a first formulation inlet (602) and a second formulation inlet (604), and a first fluid conduit (606) and a second fluid conduit (608) fluidically connected to the first formulation inlet (602) and the second formulation inlet (604), respectively. In some embodiments, each of the first formulation inlet (602) and the second formulation inlet (604) is formed as a projection extending rearward from the first fluid conduit and the second fluid conduit toward the rear end of a reusable handle (i.e., toward the cartridge cavity when placed in the reusable handle), and the projections are configured to protrude into the formulation cartridge.

[0083] The formulation dispensing assembly (600) also includes a motor (610), a gearbox (612) operably connected to the motor (610), and a pump (614) driven by the motor (610) through the gearbox (612). In some embodiments, the pump (614) is a peristaltic pump, which has been found to improve formulation dispensing when utilized with the mixing chambers and tapered formulation channels described herein.

[0084] The reciprocating nozzle assembly (616) comprises a plurality of annular nozzles (618) positioned on a comb (620), which circulate back and forth along the track of a reusable handle (406) while dispensing the formulation onto the user's skin or hair during use to achieve more uniform formulation coverage. Each of the nozzles (618) comprises a penetrating formulation channel (622), and each of these is fluidically connected to a first fluid conduit (606) and a second fluid conduit (608) via a manifold (624). In some embodiments, each formulation channel (622) is tapered for the benefit of increasing the formulation dispensing speed and / or for additional mixing of the two formulations. Tapered formulation channels have proven advantageous when utilized in combination with other features described herein, e.g., the pump (614) being a peristaltic pump and / or the turbulent mixing chamber comprising one or more spiral mixers (626).

[0085] The motor (610) and gearbox (612) drive the reciprocating nozzle assembly (616) in linear reciprocating motion. In one embodiment, the linear reciprocating motion is synchronized by an eccentric roller (628) coupled to the output shaft (630) of the gearbox (612), and this eccentric roller (628) rotates inside the annular bracket of the comb (620). Driving the pump (614) and the reciprocating nozzle assembly (616) with a common motor (610) improves power efficiency, reduces weight and size, and thereby improves the form factor of the formulation delivery device. Nevertheless, some embodiments use more than one motor to drive the pump (614) and the reciprocating nozzle assembly (616).

[0086] Nozzles (618) are fluidly connected to the first fluid conduit (606) and the second fluid conduit (608) through the turbulent mixing chamber (632), which mixes the first formulation drawn from the formulation cartridge through the first fluid conduit (606) with the second formulation drawn from the formulation cartridge through the second fluid conduit (608) to produce a mixed formulation. In particular, the turbulent mixing chamber (632) combines the two formulations in a common chamber under pressure and mixes the two formulations by allowing them to flow through one or more mixing elements, which creates a turbulent flow (distinguished from a laminar flow) of the mixed formulation. The ratio of the first formulation to the second formulation varies in different embodiments. For example, in some embodiments, the mixed formulation is a mixture of a first formulation and a second formulation in a ratio of about 0.8:1.0 to 1.2:1.0, e.g., 0.85, 0.90, 0.95, 1.00, 1.05, 1.10, or 1.15.

[0087] In some embodiments, a turbulent mixing chamber (632) is positioned between the pump (614) and the reciprocating nozzle assembly (616). In this configuration, the two formulations are mixed immediately before dispensing, which produces a more uniform formulation consistency and results in better dispensing of the formulation from the nozzles (618) compared to mixing the formulations upstream of the pump (614).

[0088] In some embodiments, the turbulent mixing chamber (632) includes a spiral mixer (626) disposed inside. Some embodiments include a plurality of spiral mixers (626) fluidically connected in series along a fluid path within the turbulent mixing chamber (632) for enhanced mixing. In some embodiments, each spiral mixer has an outer diameter between 2.00 mm and 5.00 mm, for example, between 3.0 mm and 4.00 mm, for example, 3.18 mm. In some embodiments, each spiral mixer has a total length between 20.0 mm and 40.0 mm, for example, between 25.0 mm and 35.0 mm, for example, 33.0 mm. In some embodiments, each spiral mixer has a length-to-diameter pitch (defined as total length / [outer diameter*#mixing elements]) between 0.75 and 1.25, e.g., between 0.80 and 0.90, e.g., 0.865. A combination of the aforementioned specifications has been found to produce the best consistency of the mixed formulation, particularly when the two formulations are not mixed downstream of the pump (614) immediately upstream of the reciprocating nozzle assembly (616), and also when the pump (614) is a peristaltic pump.

[0089] When in use, the pump (614) draws out a formulation from the connected formulation cartridge through the first fluid conduit (606) and the second fluid conduit (608), through the turbulent mixing chamber (632), through the manifold (624), and through the nozzles (618). In the illustrated embodiment, the first fluid conduit (606) and the second fluid conduit (608) remain fluidly separated downstream of the pump (614) to prevent mixing of the two formulations up to the turbulent mixing chamber (632). As previously mentioned, mixing the two formulations immediately before dispensing (i.e., between the pump (614) and the manifold (624)) improves the consistency of the mixed formulation.

[0090] FIGS. 8a through 10 illustrate a representative formulation cartridge (800) of a formulation cartridge type compatible with any of the formulation delivery systems, formulation delivery devices, and formulation product lines described herein. However, the formulation delivery systems, formulation delivery devices, and formulation product lines described herein are not required to use the sustainable formulation cartridge (800) shown in FIGS. 8a through 10.

[0091] The formulation cartridge (800) is a sustainable embodiment specifically designed to reduce waste and environmental impact while providing a user-friendly experience. To this end, the formulation cartridge (800) comprises two main components: a handle portion (802) and a disposable formulation cartridge refill unit (804) configured to slide reversibly into the handle portion (802) (hereinafter simply referred to as the refill unit (804)). Historically, known cartridges were designed to be completely discarded after the formulation stored inside was depleted, which leads to significant waste and higher consumer costs.

[0092] Unlike known cartridges, the formulation cartridge (800) is configured so that the handle portion (802) can be reused indefinitely, and the refill units (804) can be easily replaced after the formulation stored inside is depleted. Additionally, each refill unit (804) is configured to be broken down into smaller components, some of which can be recycled and others can be discarded. Thus, the formulation cartridge (800) utilizes an innovative structure to reduce waste and improve the user experience.

[0093] The handle portion (802) is sized, dimensional, and configured to be repeatedly inserted into the cartridge cavity of the formulation delivery device. Accordingly, the handle portion (802) is formed of ABS plastic or a similar rigid polymer or other material and comprises a hollow handle portion (802) configured to accommodate a refill unit (804) inside, and a tray portion (806) extending away from the handle portion (802). In the illustrated representative embodiment, the handle portion (802) is a two-piece assembly (in other embodiments, it may be a one-piece) and is sized and dimensionally configured to form a seamless extension of the formulation delivery device handle when the handle portion (802) is fully inserted into the cartridge cavity. The tray portion (806) protrudes away from the handle portion (802) and has a U-shape configured to support the refill unit (804) (e.g., the front body portion (810)). To facilitate secure engagement and easy removal, the handle portion (802) includes a coupling means for engaging the formulation cartridge (800) to the reusable handle of the formulation delivery device. A typical coupling means includes a cartridge release (812) (e.g., a latch) formed within the handle portion (802), which engages with the formulation delivery device upon proper and complete insertion.

[0094] Accordingly, a common formulation cartridge (110) type allows consumers to utilize many different formulations from a single formulation delivery device (104). Representative formulation cartridge (110) types are described later in FIGS. 8a through 10, and a representative cleaning cartridge (112) is described in FIG. 12.

[0095] In a representative embodiment, the formulation product line (102) includes a hair coloring formulation and a scalp treatment formulation. In other representative embodiments, the formulation product line (102) includes at least two, three, four, five, six, seven, or eight different formulations, each of which is stored in the same formulation cartridge (110) type: a permanent hair dye and developer; a semi-permanent hair dye and developer; a shampoo; a conditioner; a hair growth treatment such as minoxidil; a hair protein treatment; a disulfide bond repair hair treatment; or a fluid scalp treatment. In yet another representative embodiment, the formulation product line (102) includes any of the above combinations in addition to an optional cleansing cartridge (112) of the same formulation cartridge (110) type.

[0096] The formulation cartridge (110) type has elongated shapes and dimensions configured to be inserted into the handle of the formulation delivery device (104), particularly, into the cartridge cavity of the handle. In some embodiments of the formulation delivery system (100), the elongated outer housing has different configurations between the formulation cartridges (110) containing the formulation and the cleaning cartridge (120), but has common shapes and dimensions. For example, in some embodiments, the formulation cartridges (110) containing the formulation have the configuration of the partially recyclable embodiment shown in FIGS. 8a through 10, while the cleaning cartridge (112) has similar shapes and dimensions, but the materials and components are different.

[0097] Another feature of the formulation cartridge (110) type is a plurality of liquid output nozzles, which are sized and positioned at the distal (forward) end of the formulation cartridge (110) in a configuration that is fluidly connected to a plurality of corresponding liquid inlets (e.g., first formulation inlets). In some embodiments, the liquid output nozzles are valves of formulation bezels (e.g., pouches or packets) disposed within the formulation cartridge (110).

[0098] A representative formulation cartridge (110), which is inserted into a formulation delivery device (104) and configured to store a first formulation and a second formulation, is described later in FIGS. 8a to 10.

[0099] A cleaning cartridge (112), which is of the common formulation cartridge (110) type (i.e., having common external dimensions and multiple liquid output nozzles), enables a user to clean the formulation delivery device (104) by executing a cleaning routine that pours a cleaning liquid (e.g., water) from the cleaning cartridge (112) through the fluid conduits of the formulation delivery device (104), thereby removing residual formulation from the formulation delivery device (104). Advantageously, the cleaning cartridge (112) and the cleaning routine allow a significant portion of the formulation delivery device (104) to be reused for different formulations, thereby reducing waste and costs.

[0100] The cleaning cartridge (112) includes a refillable cleaning liquid reservoir disposed inside an outer housing, which is fluidically connected to a plurality of output nozzles. Thus, the user can fill the cleaning liquid reservoir with a cleaning liquid such as water, perform a plurality of cleaning routines on the formulation delivery device (104), and refill the cleaning liquid reservoir.

[0101] As best illustrated in FIG. 9a, the refill unit (804) generally comprises a refill packet comprising a shell (826) surrounding at least one formulation bezel (e.g., packet, pouch, or other container), e.g., a first formulation pouch (814) and a second formulation pouch (816), and a valve frame (832) coupled to the front body portion (810) of the refill packet, e.g., the shell (826). The first formulation pouch (814) and the second formulation pouch (816) each contain a first formulation (818) and a second formulation (820), respectively. The refill unit (804) may optionally include a packet sleeve (830).

[0102] Each of the first formulation pouch (804) and the second formulation pouch (816) has a volume of about 40 mL to about 70 mL, about 50 mL to about 60 mL, about 40 mL to about 65 mL, about 40 mL to about 60 mL, about 40 mL to about 55 mL, about 40 mL to about 50 mL, about 45 mL to about 70 mL, about 50 mL to about 70 mL, about 55 mL to about 70 mL, about 60 mL to about 70 mL, or about 55 mL. In some embodiments, the first formulation pouch (814) and the second formulation pouch (816) have different volumes. In some embodiments, the refill unit (804) stores only a single formulation bezel.

[0103] The first formulation (818) and the second formulation (820) may each be any of the formulations described herein, for example, permanent hair dyes; semi-permanent hair dyes, developers, conditioners, hair growth treatments such as minoxidil; hair protein treatments; disulfide bond repair hair treatments; fluid hair treatments; fluid scalp treatments, etc. In some embodiments, the first formulation (818) and the second formulation (820) are different from each other. For example, in some embodiments, the first formulation (818) is a hair dye and the second formulation (820) is a developer. In other embodiments, the first formulation (818) and the second formulation (820) are the same (e.g., a conditioner or scalp treatment formulation). In some embodiments, the first formulation (818) is selected from the above list and the second formulation (820) is a cleansing solution. In some embodiments, the first formulation pouch (814) and the second formulation pouch (816) are configured to be coupled to a valve selector, as shown in FIG. 13 and FIG. 16a through 16d.

[0104] As illustrated in FIG. 9a, each formulation pouch (814, 816) includes valve means for optionally fluidly coupling a refill unit to a dispensing nozzle unit of a formulation delivery device when a formulation-containing packet (822) and a formulation cartridge (800) are received within a portable formulation dispensing device. Representative valve means include a valve (824) through which the formulation exits the packet (822). Representative formulation bezels are described in International Patent Application Publication No. 2019 / 067336A2, published April 4, 2019 and assigned to L'Oreal SA, and U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2021 / 0196021A1, published July 1, 2021 and assigned to L'Oreal SA, all of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety for all purposes.

[0105] The shell (826) has an elongated shape sized to be accommodated within the reusable handle portion (802). The shell (826) surrounds and protects the first formulation pouch (814) and the second formulation pouch (816) and engages with the valve frame (832) (described later). Thus, the shell (826) serves as a packaging material that protects the formulation pouches (814, 816) during commercial transactions before they are loaded into the formulation delivery device.

[0106] In some embodiments, the shell (826) has a total length between 150 mm and 250 mm (e.g., 175 mm to 225 mm, 185 mm to 215 mm, 195 mm to 205 mm, or 200 mm) and a maximum cross-sectional dimension of 25 mm to 50 mm (e.g., 30 mm to 45 mm, 35 mm to 40 mm, or 36 mm). The shell (826) has a slender front body portion (810), e.g., a neck portion, extending away from the rear body portion (828) and the body portion (818). The body portion (828) and the slender front body portion (810) are generally aligned in a common longitudinal direction so that they can be assembled with a reusable handle portion (802) and inserted into a cartridge cavity of a formulation delivery device.

[0107] In some embodiments, the shell (826) is composed of at least partially recyclable or recycled material, such as injection-molded paper material or die-cut structured paper (e.g., cardboard). In the illustrated embodiment, the shell (826) is formed from a single piece of injection-molded paper material. In some embodiments where the shell (826) is formed from paper, the paper has a weight between 8 and 12 points (e.g., 8.5 points, 9.0 points, 9.5 points, 10.0 points, 10.5 points, 11.0 points, or 11.5 points) to provide sufficient rigidity without providing excessive disposable material.

[0108] The rear body portion (828) of the shell (826) has a larger cross-sectional dimension than the front body portion (810) when viewed in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the cartridge (800). The hump or bulge (827) provides a larger cross-sectional area of the rear body portion (828) compared to the slender front body portion (810). Advantageously, the hump or bulge (827) enables the use of larger volume formulation pouches (814, 816). Additionally, the hump or bulge (827) abuts the corresponding inner surface of the handle portion (802) and forms an abutment (829) that fixes the longitudinal position of the shell (826) during use.

[0109] The slender front body portion (810) of the shell (826) is sized to fit within the tray portion (806) of the handle portion (802) and protrudes into the cartridge cavity of the formulation delivery device during use. As best illustrated in FIG. 8a, the front body portion (810) is coupled to the valve frame (832). To facilitate secure connection and alignment with the valve frame (832), the front body portion (810) includes a valve frame coupling means, for example, at least one coupling tab (844) configured to optionally engage with the valve frame (832). In the illustrated embodiment, the front body portion (810) includes a single coupling tab (844) extending away from its front end. The coupling tab (844) includes a detent or prominence (831) that is shaped and sized to engage with an engaging feature, for example, a complementary aperture (833) of the valve frame (832).

[0110] The shell (826) may have various different configurations. For example, referring to FIG. 9a and FIG. 9b together, the illustrated shell (826) is a clamshell configuration formed of at least two partial shells (in this embodiment, two halves (835, 837)) hingedly joined by a hinge (839), for example, a living hinge formed integrally with the two halves. In the illustrated embodiment, the hinge (839) is positioned at the distal end of the shell (826), that is, at the distal end of each of the halves (835, 837). In other embodiments, the hinge may be positioned at a different location, for example, along the longitudinal edge of the halves. In some embodiments, the shell (826) comprises three or four partial shells that are assembled together to surround a different number of partial shells, for example, formulation pouches (814, 816). In other embodiments, the shell (826) comprises a single piece forming an open tube into which formulation pouches (814, 816) can be inserted.

[0111] The alignment of the halves (835, 837) enables the precise attachment of the front body portion (810) to the valve frame (832). To this end, as best illustrated in FIG. 13, the halves (835, 837) include optional complementary alignment means (841a-d), e.g., taps and complementary slots. The illustrated alignment means are representative and not limiting. In other embodiments, the alignment means may include different fasteners, e.g., hook-and-loop fasteners. In yet other embodiments, the partial shells may be configured to align with each other by a friction fit or other means. In addition to aligning the halves, the alignment means (841a-d) help to secure the halves together.

[0112] The illustrated shell (826) is formed from injection-molded paper material, but this configuration is representative and not limiting. In some embodiments, the shell (826) is formed from a single piece of die-cut paper material, which is folded to provide a three-dimensional structure having a rear body portion (828) and a slender neck portion (810) extending away from it. In some such embodiments, this folded configuration creates a polygonal cross-section in the rear body portion (828) and a polygonal cross-section in the front body portion (810) (e.g., an octagonal cross-section and a hexagonal cross-section, respectively). To facilitate assembly, the shell (826) of some such embodiments includes one or more scores or guidelines to ensure accurate folding. Some embodiments have triangular, rectangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, heptagonal, octagonal, or other polygonal cross-sectional shapes.

[0113] An optional packet sleeve (830) slides over the neck portion (810) and provides several important advantages. First, by sliding over the front body portion (810) and reinforcing it, it provides additional structure to the refill unit (804). Thus, in some embodiments, the packet sleeve (830) has a greater weight or thickness than the material forming the shell (826), but this is not mandatory. In some embodiments, the packet sleeve (830) is also formed from a recyclable material, which may be the same material as the shell (826).

[0114] Secondly, in some embodiments, the packet sleeve (830) is coupled to the valve frame (832). For example, the illustrated packet sleeve (830) includes a plurality of engaging member recesses (834) configured to be reversibly coupled to the engaging members of the valve frame (832).

[0115] Thirdly, the packet sleeve (830) facilitates the disassembly of the refill unit (804). As illustrated in FIGS. 8a and 9, in some embodiments, the packet sleeve (830) includes an optional integral tearaway (836a) formed thereon (e.g., a perforation with a pull tab). In other embodiments, the tearaway is formed in the neck portion (810) (see tearaway (836b)). When in use, after the formulation packets (814, 816) are depleted, the user pulls the pull tab of the integral tearaway (836a and / or 836b), thereby separating the valve frame (832) from the packet sleeve (830). Upon completion of this operation, the packet sleeve (830) is recycled and the valve frame (832) is discarded. In some embodiments, the integral tearaway (836) is placed on the shell (826), for example, the front body portion (810).

[0116] The valve frame (832) provides a rigid structure that aligns the formulation pouch valves (824) for accurate fluid interconnection with the fluid conduits of the formulation delivery device. Additionally, in some embodiments, the valve frame (832) supports an optional encryption chip (838) as described above. In such embodiments, the valve frame (832) is sized and shaped to accurately position the encryption chip (838) adjacent to the cartridge authentication interface of the formulation delivery device when the formulation cartridge (800) is placed within the handle of the formulation delivery device. Accordingly, the valve frame (832) is formed from ABS plastic, HDPE, or other rigid polymers or other materials. In some embodiments, the valve frame (832) is formed from the same material as the shell (826).

[0117] A plurality of valve engagement units (840) extend through the front end of the valve frame (832). Each valve engagement unit (840) accommodates and secures one of the formulation pouch valves (824). In some embodiments, the valve engagement unit (840) is a valve opening or cutout positioned through the face of the valve frame (832), and the valve opening or cutout is sized to accommodate the valve of the formulation pouch and optionally engage with the outer circumference of the valve. To enable engagement with the packet sleeve (830) (or, in some embodiments, the shell (826)), the valve frame (832) includes optional engagement members (842) (e.g., tabs) extending therefrom. In some embodiments, the valve frame (832) engages with the front body portion (810) by friction fit.

[0118] An encryption chip (838) (e.g., RFID tag) is placed in the refill unit (804) and, for example, in the body portion (826) or valve frame (832) (as in the illustrated embodiment). The encryption chip (838) is positioned in the refill unit (804) so that it is read by the cartridge authentication interface when the formulation cartridge (800) is inserted into the formulation delivery device. Accordingly, the encryption chip (838) stores at least one of information regarding the formulation cartridge (800) and its contents, for example, formulation identification information, starting formulation amount, formulation expiration date, or formulation production date.

[0119] Accordingly, the shell (826), formulation pouches (814, 816), valve frame (832), and optional packet sleeve (830) form the refill unit (804). In use, the refill unit (804) can be reversibly coupled to the handle portion (802) by means of fastening means, such as coupling tabs in the shell (826), for example, or by frictional fitting between the refill unit (804) and the handle portion (802).

[0120] FIG. 11 illustrates representative methods (1100) which can be used with any of the formulation cartridges of the present disclosure, for example, the formulation cartridge (800) of FIG. 8a through 10. As an example, FIG. 11 provides methods for refilling or reloading the formulation cartridges of the present disclosure.

[0121] In step (1102), a formulation cartridge is provided, for example, the formulation cartridge is configured to provide at least one formulation to the formulation delivery device. In some embodiments, the formulation cartridge comprises a formulation pouch from which the formulation has been depleted. In some embodiments, the formulation cartridge is removed from the formulation delivery device, for example, by pressing a cartridge release and pulling the formulation cartridge out of the formulation delivery device. In any embodiment, the formulation cartridge comprises a reusable body or handle and a formulation cartridge refill unit, which may include a valve frame that engages with a refill packet storing at least one formulation. In any embodiment, the refill packet comprises a shell that encloses at least one bezel storing at least one formulation.

[0122] In step (1104), the formulation cartridge refill unit is separated from the reusable handle. In some embodiments, the reusable handle is disassembled into two or more parts, thereby exposing at least one part of the formulation cartridge refill unit, and then the formulation cartridge refill unit is removed from the disassembled reusable handle.

[0123] In an optional step (1106), the formulation cartridge refill unit is at least partially disassembled, for example, by separating the refill packet from the valve frame (e.g., by separating at least one formulation bezel from the shell). In some embodiments, the recyclable portion of the refill unit is separated from the non-recyclable portion of the refill unit. For example, by separating the integral tearaway in the packet sleeve or body portion and pulling the valve frame (along with the depleted formulation pouches attached thereto) away from the packet sleeve and body portion, for example, the valve frame and formulation pouches are separated from the body portion and / or the optional packet sleeve (in some embodiments, both are recyclable).

[0124] In an optional step (1108), the recyclable parts(s) of the refill unit are recycled (i.e., the body part, the valve frame, and / or the packet sleeve), and the non-recyclable parts(s) are discarded (i.e., the depleted formulation pouches and the valve frame).

[0125] In step (1110), a new refill unit is inserted into a reusable cartridge handle.

[0126] In step (1112), after inserting a new refill unit into a reusable cartridge handle, the reloading formulation cartridge is reinserted into the formulation delivery device.

[0127] Accordingly, the present disclosure provides not only sustainable formulation cartridges but also methods to further reduce waste and environmental impact by using them.

[0128] FIG. 12 illustrates a typical cleaning cartridge (1200) which has the same features as the cleaning cartridges described above and is compatible with any formulation delivery system, formulation delivery device, and product line of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the cleaning cartridge (1200) is of the same cartridge type as the formulation cartridges described herein (e.g., configured to be securely fixed inside a reusable handle of a formulation delivery device, having the same shape and dimensions, and a plurality of output nozzles).

[0129] The primary function of the cleaning cartridge (1200) is to fluidically connect with the formulation delivery device and provide a cleaning liquid (1202) (e.g., water) that is poured out through the formulation dispensing assembly as part of a cleaning routine. Accordingly, the cleaning cartridge (1200) is a reusable assembly having a body portion (1204) formed of ABS plastic or other suitable rigid polymer. The body portion (1204) supports a cleaning liquid reservoir (1206), i.e., a tank, which stores, for example, 50 to 200 mL of cleaning liquid inside. The cleaning liquid reservoir (1206) has a plurality of output nozzles (1208) sized and positioned to fluidically connect with the fluid conduits of the formulation delivery device. A refill cap (1210) facilitates refilling the cleaning liquid reservoir (1206).

[0130] FIG. 13 illustrates an exploded perspective view of an exemplary formulation cartridge according to a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. As best illustrated in FIG. 13, the refill unit (804) generally comprises at least one formulation bezel (e.g., packet, pouch, or other container), for example, a first formulation pouch (814), a second formulation pouch (816), a refill packet comprising a shell (826) surrounding a cleaning bezel (850), and a valve frame (832) coupled to the front body portion (810) of the refill packet, for example, the shell (826). The first formulation pouch (814), the second formulation pouch (816), and the cleaning bezel (850) each contain a first formulation (818), a second formulation (820), and a cleaning solution, respectively. The refill unit (804) may optionally include a packet sleeve (830).

[0131] The first formulation pouch (814), the second formulation pouch (816), and the cleaning bezel (850) have a volume of about 40 mL to about 70 mL, about 50 mL to about 60 mL, about 40 mL to about 65 mL, about 40 mL to about 60 mL, about 40 mL to about 55 mL, about 40 mL to about 50 mL, about 45 mL to about 70 mL, about 50 mL to about 70 mL, about 55 mL to about 70 mL, about 60 mL to about 70 mL, or about 55 mL. In some embodiments, the first formulation pouch (814), the second formulation pouch (816), and the cleaning bezel (850) have different volumes. In some embodiments, the refill unit (804) stores only a single formulation bezel.

[0132] The first formulation (818) and the second formulation (820) may each be any of the formulations described herein, for example, permanent hair dyes; semi-permanent hair dyes, developers, conditioners, hair growth treatments such as minoxidil; hair protein treatments; disulfide bond repair hair treatments; fluid hair treatments; fluid scalp treatments, etc.

[0133] As illustrated in FIG. 9a, each formulation pouch (814, 816) and cleaning bezel (850) includes valve means for optionally fluidly coupling a refill unit to a dispensing nozzle unit of a formulation delivery device when a formulation-containing packet (822) and a formulation cartridge (800) are received within a portable formulation dispensing device.

[0134] The shell (826) has an elongated shape sized to be accommodated within the reusable handle portion (802).

[0135] In some embodiments, the shell (826) has a total length between 150 mm and 250 mm (e.g., 175 mm to 225 mm, 185 mm to 215 mm, 195 mm to 205 mm, or 200 mm) and a maximum cross-sectional dimension of 25 mm to 50 mm (e.g., 30 mm to 45 mm, 35 mm to 40 mm, or 36 mm).

[0136] In some embodiments, the shell (826) is composed of at least partially recyclable or recycled material, such as injection-molded paper material or die-cut structured paper (e.g., cardboard).

[0137] The rear body portion (828) of the shell (826) has a larger cross-sectional dimension than the front body portion (810) when viewed in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the cartridge (800).

[0138] The slender front body portion (810) of the shell (826) is sized to fit within the tray portion (806) of the handle portion (802) and protrudes into the cartridge cavity of the formulation delivery device during use. The coupling tab (844) includes a detent or high ridge (831) shaped and sized to engage with an engagement feature, for example, a complementary opening (833) of the valve frame (832).

[0139] FIG. 14 illustrates an exploded perspective view of the exemplary formulation cartridge of FIG. 13 according to a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the cleaning bezel (850) includes a valve (855). In some embodiments, the valve frame (832) surrounds the valve selector (900). In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) includes a plurality of holes (910A, 910B, etc.). Although two holes (910A, 910B) are illustrated, it should be understood that any number of holes (910) may be present in the valve selector (900). In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) includes as many holes (910) as the formulation pouches (814, 816) and the cleaning bezels (850). For example, if the formulation cartridge includes a first formulation pouch (814), a second formulation pouch (816), and a cleaning bezel (850), the valve selector may have three holes (910). In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 14, the valve selector (900) may have one fewer hole (910) than the number of pouches / bezels of the formulation cartridge. In other embodiments, the valve selector may include only a single hole (910). In some embodiments, one or more valves (824) may be electronic valves. In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) may be a processor communically coupled to one or more valves (824) to selectively close and open the valves (824). In some embodiments, the processor may be located in a dispensing device, e.g., the dispensing device of FIG. 1. It should be understood that the valve selector (900) may be incorporated into any of the embodiments described herein.

[0140] When operated, the valve selector rotates to selectively allow a formulation or cleaning solution to pass through one or more of the holes (910A, 910B, etc.), as described in FIGS. 16a through 16d.

[0141] FIG. 15 illustrates a cleaning bezel (850) according to a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the cleaning bezel (850) comprises an identifier (860), a first valve (855A), a second valve (855B), and a frangible ampoule (865) configured to receive a cleaning solution. In some embodiments, the identifier (860) is an encryption chip placed in a refill unit and stores at least a cleaning fluid identifier. In some embodiments as illustrated in FIG. 15, the identifier (860) is located in the cleaning bezel (850). In some embodiments, the identifier is an RFID chip.

[0142] In some embodiments, the cleaning bezel (850) secures and stores the cleaning solution within the frangible ampoule (865). When operated, the frangible ampoule (865) may be punctured or crushed to release the cleaning solution. In some embodiments, the user may manually release the cleaning solution from the frangible ampoule (865). In some embodiments, a processor located in the formulation cartridge or dispensing device may instruct the frangible ampoule (865) to release the cleaning solution.

[0143] In some embodiments, the cleaning bezel (850) includes two valves (855A, 855B). In some embodiments, the cleaning bezel (850) includes as many valves (855) as the holes (910) in the valve selector (900) of FIG. 14. In some embodiments, the two valves (855A, 855B) are configured to correspond to two holes (910A, 910B) in the valve selector (900), so that when the formulation cartridge is in "cleaning mode," the cleaning solution is dispensed from the two valves (855A, 855B) through the two holes (910A, 910B) of the valve selector (900), as described in FIG. 16a through 16d.

[0144] FIGS. 16a through 16d illustrate a valve selector (900) in operation according to representative embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) comprises a rotating barrel having an opening (or hole) (910) penetrating its distal surface, wherein the valve selector (900) is configured to selectively block a first valve or a second valve (824). In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) is configured to selectively block both valves (824). In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) is configured to selectively block the first and second valves (855A, 855B), but not the valves (824).

[0145] When operated, the valve selector (900) can switch between a plurality of modes as illustrated in FIGS. 16a through 16d. In the dispensing mode as illustrated in FIG. 16a, two openings (holes) (910A, 910B) are not blocked (white) and are coupled to one or more of the valves (824) of the formulation pouches (814, 816). In this mode, the formulation can be dispensed through the holes (910A, 910B).

[0146] In FIG. 16b, the valve selector is rotated to a first cleaning mode as indicated by the arrow. In the first cleaning mode, the opening (910B) is not blocked and is coupled to the valve (855) of the cleaning bezel (850) (e.g., shown in FIG. 14), and the opening (910A) is blocked. In this way, the cleaning solution can be dispensed only through the opening (910B).

[0147] In FIG. 16c, the valve selector (900) is rotated to a second cleaning mode as indicated by the arrow. In some embodiments, the second cleaning mode follows the first cleaning mode. In the second cleaning mode, the opening (910A) is not blocked so that the cleaning solution is dispensed from the valve (855) of the cleaning bezel (850), while the opening (910B) is blocked.

[0148] In some embodiments, the formulation cartridge may include two cleaning bezels (850) or a single cleaning bezel (850) having two valves (855A, 855B) (as shown in FIG. 15). In such embodiments, the valve selector (900) may include only a single cleaning mode, as shown in FIG. 16d. In this cleaning mode, the valve selector (900) is rotated so that the openings (910A, 910B) are aligned with the two cleaning bezels (950) or the two valves (855A, 855B) of the cleaning bezel (850), allowing the cleaning solution to be dispensed simultaneously through the two openings (910A, 910B).

[0149] FIG. 17 illustrates an exemplary formulation cartridge adapter according to a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the formulation cartridge may include an adapter (950) and / or a valve selector (900) that is coupled to the formulation cartridge. In some embodiments, the adapter (950) includes a tube (930), a connector (935), and a return fluid conduit (940). In some embodiments, the tube (930) is fluidly coupled to the opening (910) through the connector (935). In some embodiments, the valve selector (900) is rotated so that the opening (910) and the tube (930) are fluidly coupled through the connector (935).

[0150] When operated, the cleaning solution can be dispensed into the tube (930) through the opening (910). Then, the cleaning solution can be directed back to the cartridge through the return fluid conduit (940). In some embodiments, the return fluid conduit (940) is a peristaltic pump. In some embodiments, the return fluid conduit (940) pushes the cleaning solution back into the cleaning bezel (850) or into a dedicated wastewater reservoir within the formulation cartridge or dispensing device. In some embodiments, after the user dispenses the first formulation, the second formulation, or both, the adapter (950) is attached to the valve selector (900).

[0151] FIG. 18 illustrates an exemplary formulation cartridge adapter according to a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the adapter is merely a tube (930). In some embodiments, the tube (930) is fluidically coupled to a cleaning bezel via a valve selector (900). In some embodiments, the tube (930) may be coupled to a fluid source (not shown). In some embodiments, the fluid source is a sink.

[0152] When operated, the tube (930) is connected to a fluid source, so that water or cleaning fluid flows from the fluid source into the cleaning bezel or formulation cartridge to clean the formulation cartridge.

[0153] FIG. 19 is an exemplary method (1900) for cleaning a dispensing device according to a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. The method (1900) begins at block (1910). At block (1910), the dispensing device is switched to a dispensing mode. In some embodiments, the device is switched to a dispensing mode by a user by operating an actuator or by providing a command to the dispensing device. In some embodiments, the device is switched to a dispensing mode based on proximity to a surface or the orientation of the dispensing device.

[0154] In block (1920), a valve selector, e.g., valve selector (900), is positioned in a dispensing position. In some embodiments, the valve selector is adjusted to be positioned in a dispensing position. In some embodiments, the valve selector is rotated to a dispensing position (or a mode such as in FIG. 16a) to allow one or more formulations to be dispensed by a dispensing device.

[0155] In block (1930), the formulation is dispensed from the formulation cartridge. In some embodiments, both the first formulation and the second formulation are dispensed from the formulation cartridge. In some embodiments, the first formulation and the second formulation are dispensed simultaneously. In some embodiments, the first formulation and the second formulation are dispensed subsequently.

[0156] Optionally, in block (1940), whether the cartridge is dispensing is detected. In some embodiments, the device detects whether the cartridge is dispensing. In some embodiments, the cartridge detects whether the device is dispensing. In some embodiments, the user can detect whether the device is dispensing by observation.
