Abstract

The present invention provides a method for breeding diploid rice by using polyploid rice as variation carriers and application thereof. The sterility of distant hybrids is overcome by the characteristic that polyploid rice has high compatibility with instability caused by coexistence of heterologous genomes of different subspecies or species; meanwhile, wide recombination within the same genome or between the heterologous genomes of the polyploid distant hybrids is used as carriers to promote gene recombination, which changes the chromosome structure and composition and creates rich variation; and then, a series of reverted diploid rice with genetic components of different subspecies or species and the different genetic components integrated with each other are obtained by chromosome halving. The reverted diploid rice has a broader genetic basis and greater genetic diversity, which better solves the problem of narrow genetic basis of rice breeding parents than diploid backcross breeding.
